Reese Witherspoon tapped to play Peggy Lee: good choice or too goody goody?

Now that Reese Witherspoon is back in Hollywood’s good graces, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of role choices the Oscar-winning actress will make in the future. On the very near horizon, her fans will be able to watch Reese in her very first action movie, This Means War, opposite Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. Beyond that, she’s got her eye on playing Peggy Lee in an upcoming biopic. Presumably, the singer’s camp approves this nearly-finalized casting decision, for Lee’s official homepage links to a Variety article from August 2010 that described Witherspoon as “the driving force behind the project” and in negotiations to star as well. Now, Page Six provides a few more details:

It looks like Reese Witherspoon could be moving closer to playing Peggy Lee in a biopic of the “Fever” songstress. The Water for Elephants star was spotted meeting with Nora Ephron and producer Marc Platt on Thursday at Barneys eatery Fred’s.

The trio made a deal last summer for Ephron to write and direct the feature, with Witherspoon starring. Witherspoon’s also producing with Platt, whose credits include Legally Blonde. The last time she sang on screen, Witherspoon won an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash. Reps did not return calls.

Since Reese has been busily attempting to put her box-office star back where it once gloriously hung, this project has obviously languished a bit in production hell, but now that Water for Elephants has boosted her audience appeal once more (and also proved that she can still pull off more than a romcom heroine role), this Peggy Lee movie might just happen sooner than originally thought. While I’m not entirely sure that Reese is the best choice to play Peggy Lee, there’s no question that she has the singing voice to pull off at least that aspect of the role. Still, is Reese too perky for the role, or can she dial it down a notch or two?

CB was originally going to write this post because she’s a big Peggy Lee fan, and she dug up a few YouTube clips. Here’s Peggy Lee doing “Fever” in the late 1960s:

And performing “Why Don’t You Do Right” as well:

And singing “What are You Doing The Rest of Your Life,” 1970:

As well as “Is That All There Is?” circa 1970:

And just to remind everyone that Reese indeed has a serviceable singing voice, here she is playing June Carter Cash in Walk the Line:

LOVE it. She blew me away in Walk the Line. I think she’ll bring it…

  2. brin says:

I’d love to see Reese pull it off. I also love that coat in the last picture!

From what I understand, little miss Reese is a piece of work! She seriously flies under the radar, and has her PR “Princess Sweetheart of America” crown firmly in place.

Run, don’t walk, and rent a nasty little classic “Freeway” in which Reese plays a mentally deficient, spunky piece of trash!

Reese easily has the chops to do justice to the feline that IS Miss Peggy Lee.

  4. OtherChris says:

I’m not crazy about her because she gives me serious Southern sorority girl flashbacks to undergrad but I think she’ll pull it off fine.

  5. Turtle Dove says:

Can’t believe she walked away with Oscar iron and Joaquin didn’t.

Used to like her, but I don’t now. She comes across as a snot and major witch.

I don’t know if Reese can carry a movie alone anymore. I know I wouldn’t go to see a film billed primarily as a Reese Witherspoon starring vehicle. There would have to be another actor that I was interested, or a particularly smart script.

While Reese was busy making a bunch of interchangeable rom-coms (same career move as Kate Hudson/Jennifer Aniston) a new batch of actresses moved up to take her place. I’d rather see someone new and intriguing take on the role of Peggy Lee. Maybe Emma Stone?

Sloane Wyatt, I remember catching that movie randomly one day on cable, and thinking “HOW did I miss THIS?!”

she was fantastic in that movie.

  8. curleque says:

Love that coat in the last pic. Katie Holmes and Jennifer Garner desperately need to hire Reese’s stylist.

  9. Nicole says:

I LOVE Peggy Lee! What amazing talent she had! No matter who plays her, I will certainly be seeing this biopic (if it comes to fruition).

  10. Sloane Wyatt says:

@turtledove – completely agree Joaquin deserved an Oscar too! The little statue competition is pure politics for the most part, and I guess he’s too much himself for polite society. *coughOldFartscough*

  11. B says:

First June Carter, now Peggy Lee?

    Oy.

  12. Camla says:

    She’d rock it!

  13. apanama says:

i love the blue dress on her. she looks a little fuller and the dress fits her every curve just right. Hot!

  14. Abby says:

I think Adele would make a lot more sense.

  15. Sassy says:

Physically, Reese doesn’t resemble Peggy Lee at all, except for the blonde hair. Peggy had a round face and zaftig figure, and she was quite fat in her later years. I think Reese is too slight to play her. Adele would be able to do the singing, but can she act?
