Meryl Streep rules Britannia in ‘The Iron Lady’: does she pull it off?

meryl2

So… another Oscar nomination for Meryl Streep? Why not? This might even be the role that gets her another Oscar, her first in decades. Previously, we’ve discussed Meryl accepting the role as Margret Thatcher, the former prime minister of Britain (and the first lady to hold the position). Meryl’s casting caused something of a controversy for several reasons – she’s an American, her politics are quite liberal, and the film was going to show some of Thatcher’s current condition, which some consider very disrespectful. Anyway, we’ve now got the first teaser trailer and it is… pretty good. I think Meryl’s accent work is bang-on, as they say.

I guess my only complaint is that I would have hoped that the first clip would have dealt with Thatcher doing something stronger, more political than talking about hats and pearls. Thatcher was a ball-buster who once told George H.W. Bush “Don’t go wobbly on me, George” on the eve of the Persian Gulf War. I hope the film does justice to the side of Thatcher that was a completely political animal.

I want to see this sooo bad!!!

  2. Eve says:

She will nail this for sure.

I just hate that most actors now win awards for biographical roles…so she’ll probably win for this one (when she should have won before, like for her role in Doubt).

    EDIT:

I almost didn’t recognize Jim Broadbent in that top picture.

  3. ladybert62 says:

If anyone can do it, Meryl can!

  4. Chloe says:

    Can’t wait to see it.

  5. GoofPuff says:

Wow amazing job with the costume and makeup department. Looking forward to this movie with thatcher in all her ball buster glory.

  6. baby says:

love her. and she looks so pretty in the title picture (the one in the dark suit)

  7. anait says:

Unless the script is bad, she can do a great job in that role, and yes… she can get an award

@ eve “I just hate that most actors now win awards for biographical roles”
same team! But I still feel bad for Joaquin Phoenix… “his” Johnny Cash deserved an award!

  8. RHONYC says:

those teeth crack me up! 😆

  9. Emma says:

    She is a goddess. Unreal.

  10. bella says:

meryl streep is just wonderful and a genius actor. she should win at least an oscar nomination for each and every one of her roles. can’t wait to see this movie!

  11. RocketMerry says:

    Can’t wait!

  12. Eve says:

    @ Anait:

same team! But I still feel bad for Joaquin Phoenix… “his” Johnny Cash deserved an award!

I agree with you! No, not because I think Phoenix is one of the best actors out there, but because “his” Johnny Cash didn’t look like an SNL parody (unlike some others that have won). He gave his own personal touch to the character and made it unforgettable.

  13. Christine says:

I really want to see this picture. I think she’ll nail it. And I want her to get another Oscar. She is head and shoulders above other actors and actresses.

  14. zesty says:

Streep is AWESOME. She really is what acting is all about. And seems like a lovely person too.

  15. kira says:

I f&*^ing love her. I hope she gets another Oscar. Can’t think of another actor who deserves it more.

  16. KateNonymous says:

Please, Meryl Streep has always been fantastic with both language and accents. She’s so good at it that for a while she was criticized for it, as some people seemed to feel that she was using that skill in lieu of acting (I have no idea what they thought they were watching, mind you). So it’s hardly surprising that she’d get this right. It would be more surprising if she didn’t.

I really like her professionalism, too. I never hear bad things from or about her, and she keeps her private life largely private. I wish more people would see this kind of behavior as a role model. Maybe there would be fewer Kims, Lindsays, and Snookies in the world.

And, frankly, I kind of like the hat-and-pearls clip. It shows process, decision-making, and political packaging, without focusing on a specific event and making you think that the movie is about the event and not the person.

Personally, I hope it will show how controversial Thatcher was, and why so many people felt that she was bad for the country. I hope this will be a better, more fully-realized portrait than the overhyped “The Queen.”

  17. Boo says:

The hat and pearl discussion just shows that she knows how to stand up for herself as she finds the right tone. The men are looking at her superficially, and she turns it back on them and takes back her own power.

I love Meryl and can’t wait to see her hit this one out of the proverbial park.

  18. Amandahugandkiss says:

@vickolaus- Steady on, love. Deep breathing helps.

  19. Turtle Dove says:

Brilliant. As always, looking forward to Meryl’s performance.

  20. pinns says:

OK, Meryl is doing a good job, although I don’t remember Maggie being quite so ‘toothsome’!

But is this film for a North American audience only?? I just can’t see this film doing very well in Britain – well, up here in Scotland at any rate. A lot of people here still really *hate* her and everything she represents – and I mean with a vengeance! Kaiser, ask your boyfriend Gerry, just the name ‘Thatcher’ is virtually a sweary-word up here, and it’s mere mention will elicit an astonishing amount of vitriol from a previously mild-mannered Scot, and she’s been gone for 20 years!

Perhaps the film makers are hoping Meryl’s name, plus enough old Tories alive in the Home Counties, will lend this film the “King’s Speech” effect?

Personally I think it would need to be closer to 50 years before this film got a fair audience up here…

  21. really says:

LOVE LOVE Meryl, she always brings 100% TALENT. Can’t wait!

  22. ElleGin says:

I don’t think this film is about how awesome she was lol. There are films about Hitler but they aren’t praising him.
If it’s any good it will show the ugly side of all that she did instead of just trying to justify it all.

  23. supersneaks says:

    what happened to my comment?!?

  24. normades says:

    @ Eve & Anait:

Yes, Joaquin was awesome in that role because he wasn’t just doing a parody. He is nearly a foot shorter than the real Johnny and he could have never have gotten his voice as deep, so he just went with what he had. He was raw and natural. I always say that Joaquin is his generation’s Brando. I hope he starts “acting” again soon.

  25. fatcat says:

Meryl Streep as Thatcher – this would be great!!!
She is a great actress & most probably she is the only one right now that can pull off something like that now in Hollywood
    <3

  26. Carol says:

We live is an imperfect world when Meryl Streep does not hold the record for most Academy Award wins ever. She is the best actor, female or male, I will see in my lifetime.

  27. Girafe99 says:

@pinns my Scottish Grandfather will literally walk out of the room, if her name is mentioned

  28. pinns says:

@Giraffe, heh heh, that is exactly what I am talking about! Does that mean you won’t be taking him to see it? 😉

@ElleGin, good point, however that particular trailer looks pretty sycophantic to me, but maybe I am wrong, maybe the film will be a hatchet job! But even if it is, a lot of people here still wouldn’t see it out of principle…

  29. Mairead says:

Have I literally fallen into another fucking dimension? Maggie Thatcher may have been many things, but she was not in the habit of going around with a big vapid face on her like that promo shot.

The clip is appalling! I know I don’t hold the same awe for Streep as others here, but surely I’m not imagining the mink-faced caricature in that clip?

As for the hair and styling – it’s not especially accurate for her; and as for the two advisors – why are they tramping around the 1970s in 1990s haircuts?

And while we’re at it, you won’t have to go as far as Scotland to hear an expletive-ridden tirade on that dictator-loving megalomaniac. Just give me 10 minutes and a shot of single-malt!

(Edited to correct my punctuation – the clip made me that angry!)

  30. Annie_Grey says:

Looks a tad like Princess Diana’s stepmother Raine, in the second photo down.

  31. REALIST says:

It’s Meryl-she can pull anything off-what is scary is how much she looks like Thatcher.

  32. Madison says:

Meryl’s one of the best and she pulls it off but since I can’t stand Margaret Thatcher and everything she stood for Meryl’s brilliant acting is not enough to make me go see this movie about this awful woman.

  33. Adrien says:

A bit like Julia Child, but too early to tell from the trailers. I want to see the whole film.

  34. Shay says:

She sounds exactly like Thatcher. Another Academy award will go to her for two reasons.
    a) Meryl is a wonderful actress. The best of the best. (Screw the femme fatale ballerinas (Mila Kunis) and the pouting Angelinas).
    b) There are no other decent offerings in film and no alternative actresses that even shift their personalities up a gear to even morph into the characters they are playing.

  35. matt says:

I’m sorry, I love Meryl Streep, but for all the people fawning over Thatcher, just….Really!?!

She was a more dangerous version of Ronald Reagan who got lucky. Unemployment under her administration, at it’s best in ’86 only(1.6 million or just under 6.5%) never got as low as the worst period in ’78 under labour (1.5 million or around 5%).

It was great if you were in the top two percent, but not so much if you were anyone else, like a council flat dweller.

They would probably have been better going with Michael Foot. At least he still had a cool puppet on spitting image

  36. Alipop says:

OF COURSE she’s going to nail it! Foolish question.

  37. liser says:

i like Meryl….but she doesnt look weathered enough to play thatcher or maybe they just made her a touch too airbrushed O_O

  38. Luci says:

I have very mixed feelings because I love Meryl but I totally HATE thatcher. She destroyed british welfare, trade unions and more. I can’t stand to see her glorified like a movie star

  39. Eve says:

    @ Normades and Anait:

When I said “No, not because I think Phoenix is one of the best actors out there, but because…” I actually meant that I thought his Johnny Cash was great because of the reason I posted (his personal touch to the character) not because I already thought he was one of the best actors out there (therefore I’d be a sucker for whatever he did).

I’m waiting anxiously for his return. That’s a way too much talent to be wasted.
