Katy Perry’s Smurfette dress at ‘The Smurfs’ premiere: horrific or cute?

The Smurfs movie has premiered in NYC, and Kaiser just covered the red carpet jewel tone of Sofia Vergara, who was molesting Smurfs while wearing a trashy dress on the red carpet, along with the delicious Alan Cumming and his “Smurf Happens” t-shirt. Now, Katy Perry has upped the ante by laying a kiss on the plush Smurfette herself, but I sort of appreciate that Katy has covered her cleavage with a demurely placed hand because we don’t need the girls falling out at the red carpet premiere of a children’s movie:

And of course, Katy’s kissing a girl and liking it, right? Apparently, that was all part of the filmmakers’ plan:

Why would the upcoming movie version of The Smurfs hire Katy Perry to voice Smurfette when the singer has never acted in a movie before? Perhaps to sell one of the movie’s meta jokes with some extra oomph. Vulture hears that at one point in the July 29 film, Smurfette admits, “I smurfed a girl … and I liked it.” But wait, isn’t Smurfette the only girl Smurf in existence? Did she smurf her own reflection, or isn’t that something Vanity Smurf would be more likely to do? So many

[From Vulture]

Back to the dress though, which is far too short for this venue but admittedly kind of cute and certainly flattering to Katy’s pin-up girl figure. However, I find this sexed-up look horrific in terms of my memories of “The Smurfs” as Saturday morning television programming. While I realize that Katy’s merely a promotional prop here, I certainly doubt that parents will buy tickets for their kiddies based upon her voicing of Smurfette. Still, I will concede that Katy’s probably the only currently famous person who could pull off this dress in a semi-flattering manner; yet she’d look a lot better with her usual black dye job, since darker hair contrasts well against her pale skin and lets her cartoonish features pop, so to speak. From the way that Katy’s messing with her hair, she might just feel the same way:

Also and just because she’s Katy Perry, she’s obliged to pull bizarre, “zany” faces too:

Ha, the dress is kind of cute although she looks like a stripper at a very specifically-themed batchelor party, but then that is normal for her.

The shoes are great and I like that she went the whole hog and painted her nails blue too.

However, that dye job is dreadful and the blue eye make-up is making me think that she is coming for my soul. HALP!

  2. RocketMerry says:

Right, I just realized that this is a kids movie. Oh, Katy.

  3. Delta Juliet says:

I think it’s cute. But only on her. I don’t see anyone else being able to pull that off.

  4. KCT says:

She’s adorable and is the only one who could make this look work…and I love her hair color now!

  5. 4Real says:

Yeaaaah..is it bad that I think it’s kind of cute? LOL!! Hate the hair but, love the shoes!

  6. Quest says:

The dress is cute but should have been a little longer. It is difficult fof Katy to hold on to the boobs and cover her biscuits at the same time while bending over

    Otherwise – Smurftastic!

  7. Dhavy says:

    I like it!

She should go back to the dark tresses though

  8. Abby says:

She is such a cartoon character. But really, I’d wear the heck out of those shoes.

  9. ladybert62 says:

Dress is ok – hair is not.

  10. Rhiley says:

She annoys me. She thinks she is super cute and super original and super edgy but she is just another mediocre talent dying for attention. Thing is, is that she is really a beautiful young woman and looks like she is still pretty natural. But she tries way too hard.

  11. i.want.shoes says:

What’s with the gradient in her hair color (from almost white at the scalp to orangey at the bottom)? Is it supposed to be like that?

    All of it is fug.

  12. anait says:

Maybe the dress is a little to short, in other photos we can see her panties… I don’t like her make-up and the colour of her hair

  13. Eve says:

    I kinda like it…:)

I also liked her dress in that Simpsons episode (Treehouse of Horror). Like, I’d totally wear it:

  14. tapioca says:

Love the dress, hate the hair, but I’d still smurf her smurfs with my smurf.

  15. Ummm says:

She is a natural blond! We just got used to seeing her with dark hair.

  16. raleigh says:

Not really appropriate for a kid’s movie premiere. I don’t know, sometimes I wish she knew how to dial it down for occasions that call for it. She seems really insecure in that sense, like she always needs to play it sexy and silly.

  17. carli says:

I find her grating. Like can you just calm down for one minute? She always has to be the center of attention, the girl with her boobs out wearing a lampshade at the party. Like take a xanax and let us see another side of you for once. Cause this side started getting on my nerves in 2010.

  18. Kelly says:

I hate her stupid faces. In fact, I don’t care for her at all. The dress – I hardly need to say how ridiculous it is. But the thing that irks me the most is the dearth of original ideas in Hollywood. Seems every single movie these days is from a comic book and/or a sequel and then a reboot and sequelsequelsequel. Gearing up for “Smurfs II – Fully Loaded” already…

  19. photo jojo says:

If I had her figure, I’d be in short short dresses too. She’s young, she’s allowed. And FTR I am over her, personally.

  20. jover says:

agree rhiley anyone that appreciates real music, not toy pop music, finds this talentless autotuned hack beyond annoying. The fact that she’s at all these events shows she’s a media whore, not a musician or artist, living out her childhood fanstasies of fame and wealth. Remember, folks she started out as a christian singer, but that didn’t yield her the fame she craved so she and her label/handlers came up with this schtick to sell her music to the masses. How can someone as corporate created as KP ever be considered edgy is beyond me. Hello, maybe the indigo girls or a group like that but not this brainless ditz. ANyone read her 12 year old opinions in that recent inteview in Rolling Stone. She’s as brainless as talentless. Shows you what marketing can do.

  21. Nanz says:

Nice to see curves on a celebrity. The dress is totally KP. I liked her darker hair. At least she didn’t wear the blue wig, right?

  22. Kelly says:

@Nanz, thank God for small favors!

  23. Heatheradair says:

I’m getting a bit of an Evan Rachel Wood vibe off of her with the lighter (icky) hair. But man, whatever she uses on her skin (arms, shoulders, collarbone, legs, et all) is amazing – her skin is LUMINOUS and I wanna know her trick!

  24. Judy says:

Dress would be cute if it were 3″ longer…sick and tired of looking at crotches.

  25. antisara says:

Blonde, Katy? sriously? i hope it’s just for the smurfette character and then you go back to black…

  26. Ruth says:

the dress is cool- four inches longer would have looked better though. The hair is dreadful though.. shes one of lifes’ natural brunettes

  27. munchies says:

I hate and so sick of her but have to admit, this outfit is adorable.

  28. terracotta says:

she has a lovely figure, but I’d bet money she’s one of those girls who thinks it’s cute when she farts.

  29. WaywardGirl says:

For a premiere like this I think the dress is cute

  30. DetRiotgirl says:

I hate the blonde hair! It looks totally generic and budget on her. It seriously looks like the first time I tried to bleach my own hair in 7th grade; a fried, yellow disaster.

    TRAGIC. Ok, rant over.

  31. G. says:

Her hair looks like she bleached it without toning it well. Hence the change from a whiteish blonde to an orange-y color. Ick. Go back to black, it suits you much more than a half-assed blonde.

  32. Hannah says:

I’ve actually just always wanted to know who shapes her brows and/or what kit she uses to fill them in and how. As for the outfit, normally I don’t like things like that but she looks cute…like she is just having fun. So it’s not a don’t (at least not in these pics!) for me.

  33. DethHammer says:

Yes, Katy is totally manufactured, but she seems to know that, and she actually said she can be easily replaced and that there are hundreds of girls in line behind her to take her place. She also said drolly: “I know ‘California Girls’ isn’t going to save the world” I’m not defending Katy, but at least she seems partially self-aware of her fleeting time in the spotlight and her lack of originality.

I think the dress is awesome! A little too short for a kids’ movie premiere, but Smurftastic nonetheless

  34. girlygirl410 says:

Katy is so fun and cute!

I would like to see her bleach blond or go back to the dark color.

As for her music…everybody says auto-tune, blah, blah. That is her style and it is making her and many other people good money. I don’t agree with it, I appreciate true talent. This is the trend now and I think we are going to have to live with it for a while.

If you want to hear real music, grab some vinyl and throw on some Stones…now that is the real deal. ;)

  35. My Darling Pinkett says:

Is it weird that I like this whole look?

  36. wunderkindt says:

It’s cute except that the blonde hair doesnt suit her.
When blonde, she’s too generic. The dark hair however makes her eyes/skin pop.

  37. Summer says:

    She is beyond tacky.
I wish more ladies and men of this generation had class.
And she needs to stop wearing MOUNTAINS of make-up!

  38. Kitty_Cal says:

The dress ain’t great but that has got to be one of the worst dye jobs I have ever seen. It’s like she woke up that morning remembering she had to go to the Smurfs premier and threw together a craptacular Smurfette costume complete with cheap bleaching.

  39. Me says:

I think she’s gorgeous but she really needs to lay off the make up before it explodes into epic proportions of a Christina Aguilera magnitude. The hair is just the beginning… just the beginning…

  40. Jen34 says:

She looks adorable, but the dress is too short.

I really hope this movie doesn’t suck because I promised my kids I’d take them on Friday, and I hate sitting through a bad movie.

  41. Máiread says:

I think it’s adorable and fun.

  42. StopKiddingYourself says:

It certainly is a cute top! This would only be considered a dress on a 7 year old, IMO. She looks kind of nice blonde, however.

  43. Dee says:

so since she changed her hair color will she follow Brit Brit and have a major meltdown in 5, 4, 3, 2…

  44. Victoria says:

Russell.. he lika-da-blondes.. ala Helen Mirren.. voila!

  45. fizXgirl314 says:

Man, that make up looks like a mask.

  46. Jojo says:

Throw in my vote for the dress. Its a kid’s movie and a campy one at that – She blended the carton theme with her own cartoon-betty boop persona to a t- complete with the blue eyeliner and shoes. I think its very halloweeny but also perfect.

  47. kris31 says:

isn’t blonde her natural color? I could see why she wasn’t famous then.. she looks like everyone else now..

  48. serena says:

I hate that haircolour on her.

  49. kimberly says:

On anyone else it would be dumb, but on Katy it’s fine. Katy’s persona to the public is similar to a cartoon character, so I like the dress.

The hair makes her look like shit though. She’s hotter with brown hair.

  50. gg says:

Okay the “natural” blonde hair looks nowhere near as good as the edgy black, and she’s forgotten to dial back the makeup to blonde as well.

The picture on that ridiculous dress looks like Snookie.

  51. Ellie says:

Her fashion sense is to always look like a cartoon character. WTF? I’d say she can get away with it for now. But, the clocks a ticking.

  52. Leigh says:

She usually can pull off cartoon cute…
But with the blonde hair the whole look is just tragic.

  53. telesma says:

Honestly? Better than what she usually wears, and, wonder of wonders, entirely appropriate to the occasion. And yes, cute. Very cute.

  54. telesma says:

Heatheradair – It’s probably airbrush body makeup. Kett, Temptu Dura, Mehron Lux, or something like that. Actually, I’m not sure Kett does any shimmer, but TD & ML do.

  55. Swanson Hakkastone says:

Katy’s alright, but she really does take the whole Betty Boop bit a little too far.

  56. Lia Belle says:

I think the Smurfs Movie is rated PG so its not a total kids movie!! I think she looks cute!!

  57. Jilly Bean says:

love that dress! its totally ridiculus!

  58. poodlemom says:

I think she looks fantastic…especially her eye make-up! That girl has some incredible eyes and brows!

  59. texasmom says:

@embertine — ha! From here on out, every new Katy Perry picture will have me trying to imagine the specific theme for the bachelor party she is headed to!

  60. Annie_Grey says:

Smurfette is so cute in this pic.

  61. Ashley says:

Smurftastic dress! Love the eyeshadow! And those shoes smurfing rule!

  62. Lushus L. says:

Wow. Now even Smurfs are being sexual. :(

  63. Lauren says:

Her hair would look better in a honey or caramel colour. This whole bleachy horror show might be a sign that Russell Brand is bored with Katy-Helen M. she is not. Love her Smurfy Slut dress & shoes.

  64. Carolyn says:

Hehe Katy is totally being used as a PR piece here. Smurf-sensational. Who would give two hoots about this movie unless there’s Katy photo ops? In AUS her Proactive ads are currently being shown…shocked at how pretty she is without the clown makeup and with relatively normal hair. No wonder Russel was smitten at first look. The hair is too blonde…should go red like Amy Adams, Julianne Moore. Better contrast with her really pale skin.

  65. Katie says:

I didn’t read all the comments above me, so forgive me if I repeat: Has anyone noticed that her hair is a slightly toned-down version of Lady Gaga’s bleach/yellow ‘do from forever ago? Seriously, look at the two and compare them. The transition from bleach to a darker yellow (regardless of the fact that Katy’s is more caramel-y than highlighter-y) is the same.

  66. kaligula says:

heavens, she is gorgeous from head to toe! how could anyone not see that. she’s really celebrating femininity and especially young girls’ ways of defining fun, life, and dressing up here. plus she’s so pretty it’s like she’s some freak of biology or something…. it must be so cool walking around feeling so pretty!!! sigh…. in my next life perhaps.

  67. Patricia says:

    Hilarious and she looks great.

I don’t know any of her music, but I like that she doesn’t take herself too seriously. In a celeb world of Kim K, Paris and LiLo, she’s very refreshing.

  68. mystified says:

I just love her! Don’t know why. Just do. She makes me smile in these messed up times.

  69. Just a guy says:

I think Katy is totally cute and her life story is an awesome tail of success

  70. ya says:

tail? You know it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Truth!

  71. g says:

They are both completely vile as performers and people if you can call them that. That is all there is to say about them. And the sooner everyone ignores them the sooner they will fade away into the pop culture garbage heap. Stop posting and commenting about these two.

  72. erica says:

she’s so cute…she’s back to blonde because smurfette us blonde..it was a relief she didn’t painted her body blue.lol. anyway, cute dress, nails n make up..just perfect

  73. DC says:

Dress is adorable, genius. And the quote is actually ‘I kissed a smurf & I liked it’ not ‘I smurfed a girl..’

  74. Kai says:

I love this look! The makeup is adorable, and not a lot of people can pull off the blue eye-shadow and not look very 80′s!

And the dress is very adorable, I love it!
