Anne Hathaway defends her (ear-less) catsuit, says it’s cooler than it looks

Last week, Warner Bros. released the first photo of Anne Hathaway in character as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The reaction was mixed, with some nerds becoming openly upset (there was a big deal about how there were no cat-ears on the costume), and others basically yawning. Well, Anne has reacted to the reactions, and she’s trying to put up a brave front and show some sass, which makes me feel bad for her. The costume isn’t her call – this is what she was given. And now she’s the only one defending it to MTV – funny considering that MTV didn’t care for the costume either:

When we caught up with Hathaway as she promoted the upcoming movie “One Day,” we didn’t expect her to offer any commentary about the photo — but she surprised us.

“I was not going to admit it: I asked someone to send me a few reactions [to the photo],” she said. “And I happen to know that MTV’s reaction was ‘meh.’”

Now, we’re not sure about the “meh” quote, but we will admit to using the phrases “cautiously optimistic,” “unflattering” and “underwhelming” in our analysis.

Regardless, Hathaway said that no matter the first impressions, there is a lot more happening with that suit.

“What I am happy to say is, if you didn’t like the photo, you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do,” she promised. “And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste.”

Poor Anne. In another interview (to promote One Day), Anne said that all of the paparazzi photos from the Pittsburgh set are causing problems for the filming: “It’s disappointing. I think everyone feels a slight frustration with it because those stills so undercut the work that’s being done. I mean, honestly, like, wait till you see this movie. Chris [Nolan] is doing insane things in it. And it’s gonna be marvelous and it’s gonna be way beyond what anyone imagines that it could be. You can’t imagine the things that he’s doing, at least I couldn’t until I read the script and I was like, ‘You’re really? Okay, you’re going there!’” Okay, Anne. We get it! We should just wait for the movie. In which Selina Kyle is a stripper.

Or should we? To cap off a series of “OMG, this film is not going to be as good as The Dark Knight” disasters, Anne’s stuntwoman crashed into an IMAX camera while driving the Batcycle down some stairs. You know her ass got fired too.

And here’s even more footage from the set.

It looks like the visor thing on her eyes will look like cat ears when placed on top of her head…

They are filming in the middle of Pittsburgh, no shit there are gonna be leaks. Everyone and their mom has phone cameras on them and to see the newest Batman movie filming is rather exciting. And I heard the only reason the Selina Kyle photos were released was a preemptive strike, the photos was gonna hit the internets by a fan taking pics.

    She’ll be great
    She always is

Holy unflattering pictures of Anne Hathway, Batman!!!! Jeez not one hot or cute pic of her in this post.

Its way to late for them to do damage control. First the trailer thing they released for the new Batman sucked. Now they have these extremely unflattering and uncool looking pics of Anne as Catwoman…everyone is on a “meh” basis at this point. I am actually freaking worried. I wish they wouldn’t show me anymore of anything from this movie until its done. Its looking like crap right now. They gotta know that people didn’t want Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman in the first place. So wow, way to really prove people right with these underwhelming photos and videos.

I feel bad for her…obviously, in a dark Chris Nolan film we’re not going to have Catwoman slinking around and purring in the full camp of the character. He’s going to try to make it a little more serious. I’m going to wait to see it before I judge, because I remember thinking “Him? Really?” when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker and we all know how well that turned out.

  6. Eleonor says:

Anne is a good actress but she doesn’t have the sex vibe, and that’s what you need for Catwoman, because Catwoman is freaking HOT, Anne Hathaway at her best is cute: a puppy can play a tiger? NO way.

  7. anjessa says:

Still the worst casting choice since Scarlett Johansson as black widow. I just can’t see her in the role, everything about her screams ” sweet, naive, romantic, shy little girl”, not “badass stripper/action hero”. But I’ll give her a chance. If she can actually pull this off, I’ll definitely have newfound respect for her acting skills.
And a little advice for Christopher Nolan: you can’t really blame the stunt woman for hitting a camera when it was you who put that futuristic sunglasses over her eyes!

  8. Sigh. says:

She does know that we want to see what SHE can do, not just “the suit” and Nolan, right? I do hope she realizes that some of the “meh” is directed towards *her,* and that she has to overcome it.

I am not a “fan” of AH, but I would LOVE for women in general to be able to make a bigger impact on these kinds of films (comic book/franchise), so I want her characterization to succeed. That’s one of the ways “Wonder Woman” will get done, and right. But honestly, Kyle having to be a STRIPPER (former or otherwise) is irking me a little. Remember Zack Snyder tried that “female empowerment thru stripping for pervs” CRAP in “Sucker Punch,” and he failed miserably.

  9. MK says:

I respect that Anne is a company woman like this. She was the same way with the Oscars, when Franco tanked. If I were producing a movie, I’d feel comfortable hiring her because this girl is (a) always professional and (b) loyal to her projects, however bad they seem.
How many other actresses would step up and defend a costume/movie like that?

  10. neelyo says:

Some faces just can’t pull off a mask, hers is one.

  11. tapioca says:

The “coolest” suit in the world will not make Anne Hathaway hot – she was nekkid in Havoc to a near-universal “meh”.

My hope now is that Chris Nolan is playing a the old bait-and-switch and the main female protagonist will be Marion Cottilard revealing she’s actually Talia Al-Ghul – a character who’s genuinely smart, strong and sexy without the black PVC. There is a “Young Talia Al-Ghul” on the cast list so fingers crossed…

  12. Bubbling says:

@ anjessa totally agreed about the casting! It’s not that she is bad, but the fact she isn’t…AT ALL

  13. jenn says:

    Meh.

  14. Cat says:

I really like her ordinarily, but for some reason the “those who like it have excellent taste” comment really irked me.

Stop talking, start *showing* how awesome a Selina Kyle you’re going to make.

  15. MaiGirl says:

I have to keep reminding myself of the literal darkness of Nolan movies and the magic of cinematograhy. The sets and stills look ass right now because that’s how most movie stills look, and the slick filming style isn’t facilitating the coolness.

I hope she pulls it off, and isn’t as horribly miscast as I fear. I think her brief turn in Brokeback Mountain was really underrated in favor of Michelle Williams (who is also awesome), and I love how she has handled Franco’s Oscar dick move. I don’t understand the choice to de-cat-ify her costume, especially since Batman’s costume is really bat-y. It only magnifies the lack of smoldering sexuality usually present in Catwoman.

  16. ZenB!tch says:

@anjessa is Christopher Nolan complaining about the broken IMAX camera? I’m sure he’s insured for it and what is a $300K camera on a $100M+ maybe $200M budget? I have heard rumors he is filming all in IMAX in which case he has to have several of those things on hand.

  17. ZenB!tch says:

Is it bad that I would *almost* enjoy Chris Nolan pulling a Zack Snyder? Normally, I’m against that.

I boycotted Sucker Punch like there was no tomorrow but Chris Nolan is the male Anne Hathaway. He’s an altar boy (maybe literally). I’d like to see if he has any er “bad boy” in him.

  18. ZenB!tch says:

@tapioca I’m also wondering if Nolan has some CGI up his sleeves (or Marion Cotillard?)

Some of Anne’s statements or the comments a writer made in an article that quoted her said CN is “in more control than you think.” We *know* Marion is a villain of sorts from the photos. He may be filming all his good stuff on a soundstage. I still have faith he hasn’t let me down yet.

  19. GirlyGIrl says:

anyone else feeling like this movie is gonna suck?

  20. papo says:

Cant believe she ever made it out of her horrible princess movies, she’s not one fourth the actress the goddess Michelle Pfeiffer is.

  21. anjessa says:

@ZenB!tch: No, I was just making a stupid joke because the article said she got fired(she probably wasn’t). Don’t try to reason with my nonsense. 😉
