Evan Rachel Wood’s glorified shirtdess in Venice: stunning or tacky?

vff_idesofmarch_1_wenn3488207

As we talked about yesterday, George Clooney and his gang opened up the Venice Film Festival with The Ides of March. We already covered the photo call and the fact that Clooney is flying solo in Venice, with no crazy girlfriends, no chicks with Adam’s apples, no desperate C-listers. Last night was the big red carpet premiere, and these are some of the photos.

First: Evan Rachel Wood in Alessandra Rich… which I actually thought was Carolina Herrera. The dress is a glorified shirtdress, and yet… it looks good/interesting. Only a specific kind of girl could pull this off. Kristen Stewart – with her mouth-breathing, lip-biting and slumped shoulders – could not pull this off. ERW can and does. Shoulders back, that great David Bowie hair, simple makeup, gorgeous jewelry, and she’s working the hell out of this dress. It’s an odd choice for someone so young too, but that’s part of the charm as well.

I like that Clooney is doing the red carpet solo. Maybe he realizes that his dating patterns have become kind of obvious and sad. Time for some alone-time. Or maybe he’s just Evan in his sights.

Marisa Tomei in mustard Marios Schwab, with some kind of funky faux pearl (?) detailing. Why does she look so awful in Venice? Is it the air? Is it the lighting? Is she sick? She looks kind of bloated and sickly, so that may be it. Although… conspiracy theory, Marisa spent a week partying with Clooney, ERW and Clooney’s friends at Lake Como before coming to Venice. So maybe she’s just super-hungover. But yeah, I hate this dress. It needs to burnt in a healing fire.

Cindy Crawford looking less tweaked than she looked several months ago. Maybe she’s taking it easier on the ‘Tox. Cindy and her husband Rande Gerber were there to support their BFF Clooney. I still don’t know how that works – does Rande ever get creeped out by Clooney leering at his wife? Does Cindy ever feel weird when Clooney chooses girlfriends based on their resemblance to her? Anyway, Cindy is in Roberto Cavalli. She looks great in red, but the whole look is a little game-show hostess.

Diane Kruger isn’t in the movie, but she was at the Venice premiere. She wore Elie Saab, and if you look closely, you can almost make out her biscuits. Diane loves showing off those biscuits. I do like the gown, and I’m not even going to complain about it washing her out. Diane looks like she’s putting on a little weight, right? My first thought when I saw these photos of her was “pregnant.” But I doubt she is…?

And lastly, let me end it on my boyfriend/husband/lover Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s so hot. I want to have a beer with him and then spend a weekend in bed with him… watching old movies.

This Evan Rachel Wood girl is really making the most out of these venice red carpet appearances! I hardly knew who she was before I saw her in these fabulous outfits and wanted to know all about her. She’s like a breath of fresh air, someone truly original among all those dozens of cookie-cutter starlets with long hair and T&A continuously on display. I really love her style, she looks so chique and classy and yet sexy! Truly well played.

Evan has great style, I’ll admit. My biggest problem with her is that smug, “I’m sooo friggin better than anyone else” look she constantly has on her face.

I’m tired of Evan ALWAYS dressing older for her age. She looks like a middle-aged 50s housewife.

@Rocketmerry I agree. She doesn’t strike me as a particularly nice girl. But I don’t know her life. Just that she looks great on red carpets.

@Cherry – haha, ERW has you fooled good. Sure she dresses “classy” but her personality is the furthest thing from it. She’s a homewrecker and a smug twit. And yes she’s still very young, but that doesn’t excuse it.

Is it just me or does Cindy Crawford look older than 50? I do applaud her for being a healthy weight but to many fillers or Botox in her face has aged her.

I think marisi’s dress is horrid as well. Perhaps a red dress would have brightened up her face. Now that I’m thinking about it Cindy could have pulled off marisi’s dress and marisi woul have looked better in cindy’s dress.

ERW & diane look great, very youthful. ;)

I obviously have too much time on my hands this morning.

I think a lot of Marisa’s problem is the dress. That colour would make ANYONE look sick. The styling (lack thereof) of the dress is also bad.

I love Tomei’s mustard dress. very stylish. I can see the blanchette choosing something like that. EWR’s is ok, but it looks cotton, which is kind of icky, and cindy crawford is wearing my 1997 prom dress (eeew).

RocketMerry – agreed. And it makes me just want to slap her and say “bitch please. You were with Marylin Manson. Enough said.”. No amount of makeup and pretty clothes will wash the Manson off her.

Lots of love for Marissa always. I didn’t recognise Cindy Crawford, I can’t imagine what she looked like a few months ago if this is less tweaked.

And as for Rachel, she can do no wrong, ever since she appeared in Once and Agan as a child I have been taken with her, she has so much presence. Only a tall slender women could wear that dress, she looks stunning.

    *Sigh*

I have not been a fan of ERW (especially after she loused up her part on True Blood with her terrible acting) – BUT – she has been bringing it in Venice… she looks amazing… I may be forced to change my opinion…

  21. DiMi says:

At first I thought Cindy WAS George’s ex, and I was confused about why she was there. Cindy looks beautiful but HARD, HARD, HARD, and, therefore, OLD, OLD, OLD. She may have gotten a bit too skinny. If she put on just a few pounds her face would get softer again.

Evan looks fantastic; I love the dress. However, she does have a smug expression that ruins her beauty.

Marisa’s dress is great except for that awful color. Her stylist hates her. He/she keeps sabotaging her natural beauty and great figure.

Marisa is rumored to be a raging alcoholic, so maybe that is why her face is ALWAYS puffy and bloated.

Cindy’s cheeks are ridiculous. She needs to stop with the filler.

    ERW looks stunning.

  36. Turtle Dove says:

ERW looks great – well face and fit but the dress is meh.

Cindy IS looking hard. What has killed the softness in her face? Her cheeks look artificial and the eye liner is harsh. I’m going to say it. THE MOLE HAS TO GO. When people age the moles start to look a little droopy and this one’s on her face, so it is not doing her any favors. I could care less about her “signature look”. The mole is starting to hang and it has to go.

  37. taksi says:

The cut on ERW dress is nice but the detailing is very budget. I wouldn’t mind Marisa Tomei’s dress if they had taken out that pearl necklace detail.

And, cindy Crawford really does need to lay off the fillers. Though at this point, it’s so prevalent we might soon not even notice.

  38. bluhare says:

Marisa looks like crap because that mustard color takes out every red blood corpuscle in her body. It’s a very hard color to wear and people with her coloring shouldn’t even try it. More suited to warmer skin tones.

I can see ERW being a Tilda Swinton’ish as she ages.

  40. taxi says:

ERW’s style choices set her apart from her contemporaries. In a good way. There’s really only so much cleavage, near nip-slip, skin tight, backless, sideless, etc apparel we can see before it all blurs. ERW looks very clean, crisp & classic – elegant, nothing “old” at about it.

  41. kerfuffles says:

ERW’s posture is basically what is selling that dress. Don’t really like it, but it looks good on her. The belt looks cheap, though.

I kind of like MT’s dress here. It’s kind of funky. I don’t think MT’s looks bad in the face, but they seem to be doing her foundation too dark, like making her face darker than the rest of her.

Cindy Crawford looks good for her age but maybe a little hard. I’m so over her though b/c I hate those commercials she does for her skin care line–like Crawford looks that way b/c of some skin cream and not an eyebrow lift, filler and a ton ‘o ‘tox.

ERW is absolutely gorgeous! I would even go so far as to say stunning! Thank God she got out of that mess with that marilyn manson goon and back into the sunshine, LOL. I think she’s gorgeous – what Hollywood stars should aspire to look like.

  44. Playlist says:

If Marisa is going to wear a dress with jewelry attached between her breasts, she needs to stand up straight at all times and have excellent undergarments to keep the breasts at an even level. Having one of them sitting much lower than the other is not what you want people noticing about your look. The pearls should also not end at a point where it looks like it’s holding up your knickers.

George’s tuxedo shirt is not meant to be shown without the jacket buttoned. It makes him look like he’s wearing a maternity shirt. From certain angles Evan looks like Julie Andrews, which is not a bad thing. Diane K.’s dress looks a bit too prom for me. And her hair doesn’t match the formal gown. It looks like she got caught in the rain on the way over.

Cindy looks a bit chunky in that dress, but it’s age appropriate. She is one of those who swear “I haven’t done anything to change my face”, but clearly she has. I agree with Turtle Dove’s comment, the mole has got to go. Like tattoos, they don’t age well.

George finally figured out it’s classier to arrive on the red carpet with your cast mates than to steal the focus from them by arriving with a date.

  45. smh says:

Not crazy about the dress. It seems she is always emulating somebody else’s style, i.e. Dita or Grace Kelly. She’s not an incredible beauty or anything but has a certain charm about her and if she only stopped emulating others and found her own style, she’d be able to bring that out far more.

  47. Hautie says:

I love someone besides me thinks it is time to delete the mole. I swear it has triple in size. And moles that grow need to be removed.

But I do like Cindy’s dress. Red is one of her best colors.

And I hate to say this… but it is time for her to do a mini lift. And stop screwing with the botox and fillers.

There is no shame in getting the work done. Her income is based on her face. And if the lift is done now, it will not be painfully noticeable.

Diane Kruger and ERW look amazing. I agree that something is off with Marisa Tomei, but I don’t feel it’s the dress. She seems to have a really gross spray tan or something. Clooney is starting to annoy the hell out of me. He seems to want an Oscar soooo badly that he pulls out all the stops to make it happen. In all honesty: is he gay? I keep hearing whispers about it and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.
