Gillian Anderson at the Johnny English premiere: amazing or too fussy?

Here’s Gillian Anderson, 42, looking lovely at the premiere of the Johnny English sequel in London Sunday night. (I know these photos came out a little while ago, but it’s slow this morning and I’m just seeing them now.) She looks so pretty here. I can’t tell if it’s because she’s had a little subtle tweaking or if it’s due to her makeup and updo. Her look borders on “too much” without stepping over that line, in my opinion. Her dress is a little too baby doll-ish with the sparkly dickey-looking front piece and the flowing knee length skirt with tulle overlay. Somehow she makes it work though. I used to be a Gillian Anderson superfan back in the X-Files days and I love seeing her so well put together.

Here’s a little blurb from Anderson where she says she’d like to play lighter goofier characters:

Gillian Anderson has said she’s fed up with sensible roles and wants to play someone silly.

The actress, best known for playing straight-laced Dana Scully in The X-Files, stars as bossy MI7 agent Pamela Thornton in new film Johnny English Reborn.

When asked why she keeps getting cast as authority figures, the star replied: “I don’t know, I’m tired of it!”

Gillian, who attended the Johnny English sequel’s London premiere on Sunday, added: “I would love to play a clumsy person. I would love to fall on my bottom.”

The actress also revealed how she got into character to play Miss Havisham in the BBC One reworking of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations.

“I read a lot, I did a lot of research. It’s different from everything that I do. I just tried to get into her head,” she said.
“Just reading everything about Dickens, everything that’s been written about the character in the past and reading essays on her, trying not to watch very much because I don’t like to be influenced by other things.”

She added: “I haven’t seen any of it, I’m really looking forward to seeing it.”

Gillian has three kids: Piper, 17, from her first husband, and Oscar, nearly five, and Felix, nearly three, from her current partner, British director Mark Griffiths. (He’s shown with her in these photos.) Gillian and Mark live in London. I enjoy seeing her continuing to get work (even if it’s in crap films like this) and looking so amazing. She seemed like she was having problems for a while when she was with her second husband, documentary filmmaker Julian Ozanne, and she didn’t look as groomed back then. Looking at those older photos, I can tell she’s had something done but that it was done well. If I could get results like this I’d have a few jabs here and there too.

It may be a crappy movie but I laughed my ass off while watching the trailer.

About Anderson: she’s been aging gracefully (so far).

  2. Micah says:

    Very Lawrence Welk.

all we need is a bubble machine and a band.

  3. Jessica says:

She reminds me of Tea Leoni in these photos..she looks great!!

  4. zephyr says:

Am an admirer of GA. Not mad about this frock, though.

  5. aenflex says:

she looks great, and i will always have a soft spot in my heart for agent scully. i love her!

  6. Franny says:

I love that dress! so pretty.

  7. Lem says:

    She looks great !
The dress however is indeed “gather round; we’ll be going to the runway in 20 min.” – unfinished.

  8. really says:

Gillian Anderson is beautiful with a twist! Love her, she was simply fantastic in “Bleak House”…….. for 43 she looks amazing.

  9. N.D. says:

Aging becomes her. To me she looks better now than in her X-Files days 10+ years ago.

  10. ladybert62 says:

She looks good and for the most part I like that dress – the top is strange – maybe if it was that sparkly stuff all the way around the top but it seems to end – but the dress is OK.

  11. The Other Katherine says:

I know she’s a natural blonde, but I still miss the red hair — it was amazing on her. Nevertheless, it is wonderful that she hasn’t effed up her face with cheek implants and duck lips. If that’s what living in London does for an actress, she needs to keep doing it.

  12. Scarlet Vixen says:

I thought she was Edie Falco for a second–I miss the red hair. I’ve always thought she was gorgeous tho. 🙂

  13. podzol says:

She looks like Emma Thompson’s younger sister. And she looks smashing in those photos. Even better than her x-files day!

  14. Bad Fairy says:

I want to like her, but I saw her on Graham Norton pretending that she’s English now and it was more than a little nauseating. You think Paltrow is pretentious, you should get a load of GA these days. She looks great though.

  15. Dusty says:

Oh my gosh. She does not look like herself.

  16. MJ says:

Gillian Anderson spent a good chunk of her childhood in London, and she’s actually always had an English accent that she would intentionally drop when doing US promo tours. Since moving back there, I bet it came right back.

Funny, I just started watching X Files again from the beginning on Sunday. Hard to believe she was only 25 when that show started – the styling was so frumpy, she looked 10 years older.

  17. lucy2 says:

I never would have guessed that was her! Loved her on X Files, haven’t seen much of her after that. I should seek out some of her films.

  18. bondbabe says:

So how is it that you’ll criticize Kate Middleton for her eyeliner but say Gillian looks pretty here with the same lining of the entire eye?

  19. WOM says:

I think Anderson looks great. I also think her new career (as a Felicity Huffman impersonator) is rock solid!

Re: @bondbabe (#18) HAHAHA! Excellent point.

  20. Kar says:

    @18, re: eyeliner

Um… Maybe because it actually looks GOOD on GA as opposed to raccoon camouflage on Kate?

  21. bondbabe says:

@20…um, no it doesn’t look good on her either

It ages her; lining the entire eye is intended to bring wide-set eyes the appearance of being closer together. On GA, it makes her a bit weasel-looking in the eye area. Other than that, she looks great though.

  22. Jen34 says:

I’ve always loved her from X Files, and never understood why her career kind of floundered. She always had more talent than Duchovney. Anyway, I don’t like the hair, but I think she still looks gorgeous.

  23. monette says:

WTF?did an alien suck out all the fat out of her?Maybe she looks good but she doesn’t look like she used to. Love her on X files, not so much now.

  24. Ruby Red Lips says:

I had to double check this was actually THE Gillian Anderson from the X-Files – she looks nothing like she used to!!!

BTW is she not a natural redhead?

  25. Jilli says:

She’s a natural blonde. She looks nice.

  26. Annie_Grey says:

Is it me or does Gillian look better with a little more meat on her bones?

  27. crtb says:

She looks like a completely different person. The dress is too dressy for daytime. Would be more appropriate for an evening affair. However she does look very pretty.

  28. taxi says:

Lots of fillers here. She looks very different than in Bleak House or X-Files. Almost unrecognizable.

Hair roots look brown, not blonde.
