Details on William Balfour increasingly disturbing, alibi doesn’t check out

At this time Chicago Police have not charged William Balfour with the murders of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew. He’s currently referred to as the primary suspect, however. Details about the man, his past, and the circumstances surrounding his relationship with the family continue to come to light and they are increasingly disturbing.

The Chicago Sun Times has disclosed that the alibi given by Balfour has been contradicted by his pregnant girlfriend, whom he lives with since his estrangement from his wife, Julian King’s mother Julia. It was at the girlfriend’s home that the newspaper claims a neighbor witnessed a damning scene.

A neighbor on the block where Balfour was arrested remembers seeing a man he believes to be Balfour drive up in a white SUV and park on the block around noon — at least three hours after the slaying.

The resident said the driver first reached into the glove compartment, and then got out of the car carrying what appeared to be a bottle of liquor. He saw the man walk into the home where Balfour was arrested later in the day.

The driver was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and was looking over his shoulder as he walked down the block. The driver spent about 10 minutes inside the house. “He was acting suspicious.. . He (the boy) had to be in the car. I figure he had to be. I wished I had known.”

The Suburban pulled up on the block hours before the bodies were discovered, said the man, who has lived on the block 30 years.

Balfour was later arrested at that house.

The Chicago Police have no doubt that the incident was not a “stranger-type” homicide. Balfour and Julia Hudson were reported to have argued earlier in the day, possibly over a car payment. TMZ says Balfour was in violation of his parole for not attending court ordered anger management classes from his previous attempted murder conviction stemming from a car theft gone wrong. The ex-con was also arrested for drug possession in June, but the case was dismissed on a technicality. Additionally, William Balfour missed a scheduled appointment with his probation officer the morning of the murders.

Not to imply a bad parent automatically begets a bad child, but William Balfour’s paternal lineage is troubling, as well.

Balfour’s father is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for murder. His brother served time for drug dealing.

Balfour himself has served time for attempted murder and carjacking.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Balfour was a member of the Gangster Disciple Street Gang.

Also according to court docs, Balfour told the judge back in 1999 he had a good relationship with his mother until “she gets an attitude.”

[From TMZ]

Of the many things I’ve read today on this, that quote is the most portentous. When speaking of his mother, he says he gets along with her until she gets an attitude. If this is what he said about the woman who is shouting his innocence, what would he have said about the woman who repeatedly kicked him out of her house?

A man is innocent until proven guilty, but the total of a man is still the sum of his parts, and William Balfour is in the negative.

I’m sorry, I’m not intending to pick on the victim(s) (Julia), but what possessed her/convinced her to let this thing anywhere near her family? I can’t imagine… It’s all such a tragedy…

I’m sure he did it and I hope his current girlfriend takes her baby and gets far, far away from his a@@ right now.

I would never wish anything bad on anyone. But if this animal did in fact commit these crimes, I hope he gets locked up for life. His death penalty will be in the care of the other immates.

I know that name. Where have I heard it before this case ?

  4. vdantev, maybe Eric Balfour from 6 Feet Under?

    @RAN

Before Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol and won an Oscar, she and her family were probably a typical family living on the Southside of Chicago. That can be a really, really tough area, and unfortunately this is not the first story like this, just the first one to garner this kind of attention.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this horrific time.

  6. EnKay says:

    This wasn’t Julia’s fault. Bless.

  7. Anne says:

I don’t think now is the time to discuss what the victim did wrong. I imagine the resources and support for her (Julia) were lacking. I bet her family tried to help but what’s needed is real community support for people who are dealing with abusive assholes like this.

  8. Feebee says:

I have to admit, I thought similarly to RAN’s comment but things are never simple like that and I hope Julia’s doesn’t blame herself for this piece of crap of a human being. I can’t imagine any reason for shooting a 7 year old. My mind boggles, it’s just too unbelievable. Chicago’s public defenders are probably crapping themselves over who gets to defend this one.

  9. mE says:

I hope whoever is responsible for this bastard being free when he should be in jail is crapping his pants right about now too.

  10. Yourself says:

This is sick that I feel like throwing up. Tjhis excuse of a human being should never have been allowed near any one. To blame Julia is useless. We should all pray for the family.

  11. MonicaBee says:

I’m definitely not placing blame on Julia; however, one does wonder why anyone thinks it’d be a good idea to raise a child with a convicted felon (who has a family history of prison-runs). I know people say you can’t control who you fall in love with… I would like to think I have enough control to do so.

That being said, this family remains in my thoughts as they deal with this horrible tragedy.

  12. Anne says:

Why does it matter if we can’t understand why she let someone like that into her life? People can be manipulative especially if the person they are manipulating is lonely or if there are other circumstances. She clearly didn’t think he *was* capable of what he’s alleged to have done.

  13. Credit regarding that superb article! It reduced the problem a percentage!
