Tom Cruise is “very sensitive” about his ‘One Shot’ casting

cruisereacher1

Whenever a popular book series meets the big screen, a certain amount of obligatory grumbling amongst readers is only natural in terms of casting their beloved characters. However, there’s been quite a bit of noise made about the selection of Tom Cruise for the role of Jack Reacher in One Shot. It would be an understatement to mention that Jack Reacher, as a fictional character, is a very large man. And a bulky, intimidating one at that. In fact, Reacher just happens to be a ex-military cop-turned-drifter who starts poking around in a case that turns out to be much more than he’d planned. While I personally am not a Tom Cruise fan, I won’t deny that he’s a talented actor in the right role. Here, Cruise is definitely not the man for the job, and I don’t mean to pick on his size, but Reacher’s stature (6’5″, 250 pounds, 50-inch chest) is an integral part of how he operates within author Lee Child’s books. Cruise, however, has stated in an interview in December’s issue of Empire that he believes otherwise and that Child agrees that Cruise was the correct choice for the role:

There are casting calls so controversial that they look likely to reduce the internet to a smoking wasteland of charred avatars and ashen memes. Michael Keaton as Batman, Daniel Craig as Bond, The Last Airbender… that kind of thing. It’s fair to say that the choice of Tom Cruise to play Lee Child’s towering do-gooder Jack Reacher in One Shot has smoke pouring out of the web again.

With the movie currently filming in Pittsburgh, Empire tracked the man down to ask about the farrago. “Firstly, I’m very sensitive to it,” Cruise explained, revealing that Child came to watch his readings. “This is Lee’s book and Lee’s character. Him giving me his blessing is what made me do it. If he hadn’t then I wouldn’t have done it.”

And what of the discrepancy in height – Cruise giving away more than a few inches to the clock-brained legend? “Lee told me that the reason he wrote him that size (6′ 5″) is because that was just one element to his character, and that opened the door to me playing him.”

As Cruise himself is quick to point out, he’s no stranger to controversial casting. His pick to play Lestat in Neil Jordan’s Interview With The Vampire may have been pre-trolling, but it still caused a stink with fans of Anne Rice’s novel – and, briefly, with the writer herself.

No-one should doubt the actor’s commitment to the role, though. “Reacher is such a great character,” he enthused. “He doesn’t have a cell phone, he doesn’t have email. He’s off the grid. He pays for things in cash. People look at things through the prism of the colours of their life, but Jack Reacher does things the way we want to sometimes. In that sense he’s sort of a Dirty Harry, a James Bond, a Josey Wales.”

[From Empire]

Honestly? Child is probably just flattered that a (former) A-list movie star wanted to star in a movie based on his books. The sketchy part of Cruise playing this role is that the books consistently and repeatedly draw attention to Reacher’s intimidating physicality, and I’m certainly not the only one who’s noticed this discrepancy:

Cruise and Child are right of course in that changes can and often should be made when adapting a novel for the screen, and Reacher’s size does act at times as a metaphor for an imposing and unstoppable force. What Cruise lacks in size he more than makes up for with persistence, drive, and his undisputed title as the best movie runner of all time.

And if Reacher’s size was simply one more characteristic of his person none of this would matter. But it’s not. Reacher’s physical nature, his size and presence, affects how he reacts to people and more importantly, how they react to him. Scenarios happen (or don’t) strictly due to his appearance and abilities.

[From Film School Rejects]

Meanwhile, there’s also a Facebook page called “Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher” and a petition for the figurative cause as well. Poor Tom — all he wanted was to entrench himself within a well-worn franchise with the potential to carry him through Hollywood for another decade (give or take), and now the mean kids are picking on him. All of this riffraff after he did so much to impress the younguns on the Rock of Ages set and even rocked out on a balcony to prove his cred.

The thing is, Tom has always been very sensitive about his height and consistently goes to great lengths to make himself appear several inches taller than his 5’7″ frame would permit. For crying out loud, even his rock star character had massive lifts built into his boots just for the hell of it. So why on Xenu’s great earth would he sign himself up for such ridicule by playing a character whose height is so very important, vital even, to the story being told? Many of us already can’t take him seriously in the Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol trailer, so I don’t understand why he signed himself for even more in-depth discussions of his height. That is, unless he just doesn’t care about what people say; but quite obviously, Tom is “very sensitive” to any and all scrutiny.

So yes, Tom Cruise is eight ten inches shorter than the brick sh-thouse that he’s been hired to play onscreen in One Shot. And for that reason, he most certainly requested that wife Katie Holmes to wear flats to get frisky on the Philadelphia set with him. Nice lifts Tom, but this time, they’re not going to get the job done.

Incidentally, here’s a new poster for MI4 that does away with some of that pesky Xenu fog. Tom looks nearly as tall as the Burj Khalifa!

My god, he’s ridiculous…that look he gives (on that cover) is his “intense” expression. And he does that ALL. THE. TIME.

He does that whether he’s “acting” or telling Matt Lauer that “there’s no such thing as postpartum depression”. It’s the exact same face.

  2. TrollyDolly says:

He was amazing as Lestat, contrary to everyones initial hostility (mine included) and even Anne Rice later publically apologised for her oposition to the casting. He will pull it off, he can be astoundingly talented.

I still think he is brainwashed $cientology puppet though.

  3. teehee says:

Agree with TrollyDolly- the cult crap is astoundingly hideous, but his talents were and are still levels above some other Hollywoodies today.

  4. mamaT says:

he is no reacher. he just is not.

  5. Flan says:

Maybe it can work if all the people cast are a couple of inches shorter than him…

Lately I’ve been feeling kind of sorry for him; he seems so insecure and that’s probably why he ended up with his cult.

  6. Anonymous says:

I cannot take this guy seriously in any role and wouldn’t pay a cent to see his movies.

  7. Eve says:

    @ Flan:

Maybe it can work if all the people cast are a couple of inches shorter than him…

Who? The dudes who played the original Oompa Loompas?

P.S.: Scratch that, they’d be probably taller than him anyway.

  8. gee says:

He was pretty good in that movie with Jamie Foxx.. the name escapes me.

I don’t know why he doesn’t just embrace his height. There are millions of women shorter than him, and he marries like 12 different Amazonian women, with all his hangups. It’s so weird.

    • mOOsey says:

Yes, I loved him in Collateral with Jamie Foxx… he played such a non-typical Tom Cruise character. That’s about the only movie that I like him in. Every movie he’s in, he’s just playing himself – no acting required.

  9. dorothyy says:

I’m sorry..I have a problem watching his movies knowing his strong connection to Scientology. His brainwashed loyalty to that cult only proves how dumb and gullible he really is.

  10. Whatamess! says:

How was he not cast as 1 of the dwarves in any of the “Snore White” movies?

  11. Bev says:

I’m not a Cruise fan but I think it’s unfair how he’s ridiculed for his ‘fantastical’ beliefs when all religions have some element of ‘out there’. Don’t Christians believe Jesus will descend on a cloud? Are they crazy too?

I’m not saying I’m pro Scientology, I’m just for his right to be religious without being branded a loon. With that being said, he really should learn to shut up about it.

  12. Tanguerita says:

this guy is way beyond ridiculous.

  13. Tazina says:

I cannot picture Tom Cruise as Reacher. Can he not let one role go because he actually might not be suitable for it? He has been very good in other roles, but this just won’t fly. It doesn’t matter though. There’s still the books. The movie is easily ignored.

  14. i.want.shoes says:

@Bev: It’s not just his ridiculous beliefs, but also the fact that it’s a religion that allows him to profit from the free labor of other COS members who cannot afford the audits and access to the “higher” levels of ridiculousness.

  15. Ann says:

Crikey, here comes another Tom Cruise movie! Why don’t they stop casting him in the hyperbutch parts? He’s not believable. If he had any brains, he’d move into character parts.

  16. Cindy says:

@Bev – Did you miss the article a few days ago about how high-ranking Scientologists were targeting Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and all their friends? I just won’t give any money to any celebrity if I know it’s getting turned over to an immoral cult so they can do shady crap like that.

  17. lin234 says:

He plays the same role in just about every movie. He always plays a character who happens to be the best in his field. My last straw with Cruise was in The Last Samurai where he played the last standing warrior out of all the Samurais.

His only real acting expression is his intense look but seeing how entrenched he is in a a hoax like Scientology just shows us how stupid he really is. Look at those movie posters. That’s his signature look in every movie.

  18. AG says:

I remember the days when Tom Cruise could do no wrong. He was great in everything he did. He’s been involved with COS for years and years, most of his adult life in fact. If he would have kept his private life private, he never would have had this downfall. The couch jumping, the “glib” comment to Matt Lauer – he’s been trying to make up for these things for a while now, but the public (and even his fans) can’t seem to let the weirdness that is his personal life go – me included. Though I won’t pay to see a movie of his, when they’re on TV – I do enjoy them. His decline is sad.

  19. Masque says:

    Dear Hollywood,

Kevin Durand is 6ft, 6in and a terrific actor.

    Sincerely,
    Reacher fans

  20. aenflex says:

i cannot stand the man. as far as this reaccher fellow, seems casting cruise was stupid.
having said that, my distaste is made worse by the fact that he’s so preoccupied with his height. enough so to wear fucking lifts.
if he would just be confident and ditch the napoleon complex, no one would focus on the height.

  21. Madchen says:

Jack Reacher: stoic, laconic, 6’5″, 250 lbs, restrained, tall.
Tom Cruise: verbose, 5’7″, 150 lbs, couch-jumping, glib, napoleonic.

Cruise usually plays to type (You can’t handle the truth!). I hope he’s one heck of an actor.

  22. Marjalane says:

Quite possibly the most offensive casting Hollywood has ever delivered. This COULD have been a great movie; The Jack Reacher charachter is really well defined- no way can the GMD pull it off.

  23. Franci says:

As a huge fan of the books, I just can’t imagine Tom (Ick!!!) Cruise in this role. I will never go to see this movie, and it may impact my ability to enjoy future Jack Reacher books. Bad choice. They would have been better off going with an unknown actor.

  24. tapioca says:

I like Tom and his general insanity, but you couldn’t have a Godzilla movie with a 5’7″ high monster! Size matters when casting a character who depends so much on their physicality.

And he WAS absolutely horrible in Interview with the Vampire, he only looked good because he was cast opposite a Brad Pitt giving a performance even Keanu Reeves would have called “wooden”.

  25. anon33 says:

IMHO I don’t even think those lifts flatter him!! They make his butt look like it is placed abnormally high up on his body. That pic of him grabbing Katie…it just all looks really disproportionate.

  26. The Original Mia says:

Ridiculous casting, but the author wanted his book to be made into a movie and that means attaching himself to Tiny Tom.

As far as the MI4 poster, looks budget, but yay! Renner!

  27. Jen34 says:

That role has Alexander Skarsgard written all over it.

  28. Hautie says:

    Bless his little (5’7) heart.

I still believe if Cruise denounced that Cult, he could repair a lot of the damage done to his reputation. Do a great sit down interview with Lauer and earn back his rep.

As much as Cruise wants to be “IT” again. That is not ever going to happen. The general perception of him as “Head Nut Job” at the Cult compound can not be erased.

  29. mln76 says:

@Bev read this article it’s really long but it’s written by a Pulitzer winning writer and it pretty much outlines what makes Scientology different from your average church and more like an enslaving cult with some scary practices.

  30. ladybert62 says:

I actually went to the Lee Child website to read his comments about the Tom Cruise controversy. He had an interesting take on it – apparently, little tommie was the one who bought all the movie rights to the Jack Reacher character many years ago (probably before he became so popular – my guess).

Anyway, Lee Child says he doesnt mind the physical differences between the fictional Jack Reacher and little tommie (I still dont believe Mr. Child).

Lee Child says he will continue to write the books with the same physical characteristics that he has always used for Jack Reacher.

Lee Child said movies are always different from the books (sadly true which is why I usually dont see the movies if I have read the book).

Lee Child said that “…from an author’s point of view, it’s more exciting to see a new and fresh vision. Lee doesn’t want to see a literal translation. Without comparing himself to Bob Dylan, he wonders what Dylan wanted to hear when someone covered, say, “All Along the Watchtower”…a tribute clone, or Jimi Hendrix? Lee thinks the Cruise/McQuarrie interpretation will build on the books in the same way.”

Interesting but disappointing – I want the movie Jack Reacher to be the magnificent thinking hunk that he is in the books. Little tommie to me is neither magnificent, thinking or a hunk. I probably wont see the movie but I will continue with the books.

By the way, Lee Child’s latest book called The Affair is wonderful. I read it the day it landed on my kindle – and loved it and Jack!

  31. taylor says:

My partner has read all of the Reacher books and when I mentioned that Tom Cruise was going to play Reacher in “One Shot,” he freaked out (something he NEVER does about gossip-y type stuff). He just can’t get over how physically unsuitable Cruise is for the role, especially as Reacher’s physicality is so integral to his character.

And yeah, I can, in no way, buy Cruise as anything other than a parody of a “movie star” these days.

  32. podzol says:

IMDB often gets it wrong too, so I’d even say … bless his 5’5 heart! Seriously, why is Cruise so sensitive to the topic of height? You’re born with what your mama gave ya, be proud of it, and get rid of those 4 inch stilts!

  33. Dibba says:

    He’s so gross and weird.

  34. Pyewacket says:

I do not care what religion he follows, what his politics are or what he does behind closed doors. If I based those things on liking every actor out there, I would not watch hardly any movies.

I think Cruise is a good actor, and I will be seeing this Mission Impossible, as Renner is in it too. Too bad Paula Patton is in it,. but I will overlook her, in favor of Renner! YUM!

  35. Kimbob says:

    hahaha…@Eve..yeah, that “intense” stare..ALL the time…too funny.

I think as far as Cruise’s acting..he’s a bit over-the-top for me. To the point I get uncomfortable watching him strain so much. Now Jeremy Renner…he’s another story. Yeah, I like Renner!

  36. Princess Lizabeth says:

    Ugh…Tom Cruise.

He needs a new look. That “intense” thing he does makes me laugh…it’s rather like Zoolander’s “Blue Steel” face.

  37. Annie says:

Cruise and the powers at COS wanted him to be the celebrity face of their organization. He then acted insane on Oprah, lectured Matt Lauer on psychiatry, claimed expertise on post- partum depression, etc. The book Inside Scientology makes the interesting claim that these antics were disastrous for both Cruise and COS. He irreparably harmed his career, his reputation, and his religion. Good! I don’t care about seeing him in any role, especially not Reacher.

  38. Victoria says:

Tommy has gone batshit but he is a good enough actor when I can put aside his reality to enjoy his roles. That being said, I haven’t paid to see Tommy in a movie since he broke up with Nicole Kidman and got weird. That was MI2. Love him in the MI series and hate but understood that Thandie wanted to be with her kids instead of being on MI3 because Newton and Cruise are movie magic.

I am going to the theatres to watch MI3 even though I don’t support Tom, I gots to support the black actresses and I adore Paula Patton. So I’m doing it for her.

  39. Original Tiffany says:

“What Cruise lacks in size he more than makes up for with persistence, drive, and his undisputed title as the best movie runner of all time.”

Hahahaha! Been saying this for ages! In every single movie he RUNS! It is so fricking funny. Run, Forest, Run!

BTW, if Reacher is 6’5″ and Tommy is 5’7″ that’s 10! inches and about 100 pounds difference. Love it.

    Run, Tommy, Run!

And BTW, the only man who can rock 6 inch high heels and look sexy as hell is the one and only PRINCE!

  40. MIke says:

I dunno I still feel kinda sorry for this guy. I would never trade lives with him in a million years…and that’s not a good thing. Movie stars are supposed to be admired, not ridiculed. All anyone every thinks about when they think of Tom Cruise now is that he’s a gay, short, scientologist freak. it’s kinda sad how no one looks up to him anymore (literally or figuratively).

  41. Smithy says:

First of all, I absolutely hate scientology. But I definitely agree with what Bev has to say — without getting into a crazy internet argument, most major religions have been (and often justifiably) accused of being cults at one time or another… the irony being that they’re usually accused by people of other religions, who often use the same tactics. My point being that while Scientology is completely horrible, EVERY RELIGION has skeletons in its closet… so while targeting the South Park creators and others may be the newest horrible thing a religion is doing, let’s not forget the past… like the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc. etc…

  42. mia girl says:

@TrollyDolly & teehee – I respectfully disagree with every fiber of my being. Cruise was NOT awesome as Lestat. Truly portraying that character was above his acting grade – his accent was off, and he couldn’t pull off the raw sexual energy or complexity of Lestat. For what it’s worth, I also think Pitt was also pretty bad in that film. In general, the film was just mediocre and a real disappointment for fans of that series.

Cruise was good in Jerry McGuire and I really liked him in Magnolia. Funny, now I realize that in Magnolia he was playing a character perhaps more like himself – all in-control on the outside – complete insecure chaos in the inside.

  43. Gypsy says:

    I like Tom Cruise,
he’s a good family man, a good, enthusiastic actor.
a nice man quick to smile
a good role model for his kids/any kid.
a very wealthy and successful man.
    a very handsome man.
    a powerful man in Hollywood.
a short man who has accomplished far more than many-a-tall man/woman
I don’t feel sorry for him, I respect and like who he is.

  44. AZ says:

    Gypsy= Tom Cruise

  45. Ruffian9 says:

“If he had any brains, he’d move into character parts. ”

Yes yes yes. He’s a good enough actor (I think) to pull of character-centered stuff, and wouldn’t have to ‘reach’ so much playing these tough, leading man/heartthrob roles. He just cannot pull them off anymore.

  46. Nancito says:

@Jen – that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking too. Tom Cruise in the role??? – never in a million years.

  47. katie says:

the guy threw an “ive been acting for 25 years horray you’re so blessed” party for himself in an episode of oprah. that alone is just…… bleeegh. a total dvd collection to go with as well.

  48. katie says:

ha ha ha, blue steel face. tom cruise just threw MAGNUM at us. zoolander is gonna freak!

  49. Gypsy says:

@44 – AZ, why would you think I am Tom Cruise,is it because I am not nasty to him and stupidly calling him names?
Is it because I think I am above being a jerk?
OR:is it because I was brought up not to degrade myself by trying to degrade others. – Then I’m guilty!

Tom Cruise seems to be a decent human being and a decent family man – so why should I waste my time trying to be nasty to/about him.

  50. palermo says:

Gypsy, do you get the point of this site, at all?

  51. LeeLoo says:

If Tom kept his mouth shut about the Scientology I would MAYBE semi-respect him.

  52. Kathy says:

I never read the books, but it looks like Cruise is set on ruining another beloved character. I will never get over his stupid turn as Lestat. He had no business accepting that part — A tall painfully beautiful blond man. He, along with Neil Jordan (who changed a major plot point), ruined the whole thing. I was glad to read recently Brad Pitt wasn’t thrilled being in that movie. He’s moved up in my estimation. Cruise has no business playing Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages either, especially when Russell Brand was playing Lonnie. Those roles should have been reversed, as they should have been in Interview. Bleck! Will this little man never go away?

  53. MB says:

Umm… couldnt care less about this Reacher fellow as I have not come across the books.

    BUT

Can we please talk about Katie’s feet in those pics? There is something seriously freaky about them.
