Charlize Theron covers Vogue, talks Stuart Townsend breakup

charlize1

Charlize Theron covers the December issue of Vogue Magazine to promote her new film, Young Adult. This film is a total break from the epic depression-fest films Charlize usually makes. Young Adult was written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, reuniting for the first time since Juno. I’ve included the trailer at the end of the post – I think it looks really good, honestly. Anyway, I usually find Charlize’s interviews pretty boring, just because she’s not a scandalous person or a famewhore or anything, but she does do some opening up. You can read the full piece here, at Vogue, and here are some highlights:

Winning her Oscar: “The Golden Frog, you’re talking about?” Theron asks coyly. Winning the Oscar was “amazing,” she says. The night she was up for it, in a shimmering Gucci dress, she felt “like a princess.” At the last second, Diane Lane switched her seat so Theron’s mother, Gerda, could be next to her when the envelope was opened. “It was life-changing—it opened a lot of doors,” says Theron, who was nominated again for 2005’s North Country. “But it made people have a lot of opinions about what should happen next. You realize quickly that you can never please everybody.”

Young Adult: Theron plays Mavis Gary, a lonely, binge-drinking writer of serial teen romances who makes an awkward return to her Minnesota hometown, trying to win back her married high school boyfriend, Buddy Slade (played by Patrick Wilson). Mavis is a hot mess—icy and self-absorbed on the surface, but reeling underneath.

Working again after taking a break: Young Adult is Theron’s first major movie role in three years, and in the middle of filming she had a revelation. “I realized how much I love what I do,” she says. “I really, really missed it. Like around week three, I had this horrible, sappy moment where I got a little overwhelmed. It was just a really great f–king experience.”

The Stuart Townsend breakup: “I’d gotten out of a relationship, and I was in this really floaty place. My feet weren’t touching the ground. I just kind of turned to [Reitman] and was like, ‘I feel like me again.’” The relationship, of course, was Theron’s longtime partnership with the Irish actor Stuart Townsend, whom she dated for almost ten years. When the pairing began to falter, Theron says, she was desperate to save it; acting took a backseat. “It was sinking, and I had to give it a fight,” she says. “I really wanted to try and make it work. That was the priority. I wouldn’t do it any different way.”

Being a single girl: As we meet, Theron is single—a foreign experience. “I’ve never been single,” she says. “This is the first time in my life. From the time I was nineteen, I’ve been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month. It’s been good for me. I’m a creature who’s really found her comfort zone in relationships. It’s been nice to rediscover myself,” Theron says. “I had to make a real conscious effort to do it—it’s hard. It’s much easier to lose yourself in flowers and cigarettes and coffee with somebody else.”

She quit smoking: Theron quit smoking a while ago but refuses to go into detail of how she did it, not wanting to jinx it. “I was highly addicted,” she confesses. “I thought, I don’t smoke like normal people. I smoke to die.”

On Kristen Stewart and Snow White and the Huntsman: Theron plays Ravenna, the Evil Queen hell-bent on destroying the princess played by Kristen Stewart, the brooding Twilight comet endlessly chronicled in celebrity weeklies. “She just turned 21,” Theron says of Stewart. “She’s a child. When I think about myself at 21, I had just done The Devil’s Advocate, and Keanu [Reeves] had paparazzi following him and Al Pacino said this thing to me: ‘If I knew that my life would be under this kind of scrutiny, I would have never become an actor.’ And I thought, Wow. I couldn’t comprehend it. And Kristen is just living this to the max and still has a sense of humor about it. There’s this really lovely quality about her that just doesn’t give a f–k. A lot of people say they don’t, but then they go home and cry and pop a Xanax. Kristen actually doesn’t give a f–k. That’s what’s so refreshing about her. I’m looking forward to killing her and taking her beauty,” Theron says. “That’s what happens, right?”

Paparazzi and fame: “Some people are really into that world, of being photographed, being at the party, being with the guy, being in the Bentley,” she says. “Good for them, because it’s so entertaining to watch. It’s just not me.”

She wants kids: “I do want to have kids, yeah,” she says. “I always have. I’ve never had a rush for it, a moment where I really wanted to do it. I don’t have a panic about it.” Lots of kids? “I don’t think about the amount so much. You have to be aware of what you can give. I don’t know where I’m going to be in five years. I might be in a place where I’m like, ‘Yeah! Six!’” Theron laughs. “I don’t think it will ever be that,” she says.

[From Vogue]

I bet she still gets high, don’t you? I bet she quit smoking cigarettes but she still smokes pot. She seems all chilled out, like an aging hippie pothead. As for her breakup with Stuart Townsend, that still upsets me. They were together for so long! And he’s so cute and Irish! That just shows me that you can spend 10 years bangin’ some hot Irish dong, and you can still have relationship problems. That’s something that Michael Fassbender and I will have to discuss.

Here’s the Young Adult trailer:

She sure knows how to take a good picture!

  2. tripmom says:

There is just not a single negative thing to say about her. She is intelligent, self-aware, gorgeous, humble, and talented. She deserves her success.

  3. brin says:

That’s about the most open interview I’ve read of hers. I liked her with Stuart, too. She’s a talented actress who is private and not at all famewhory and for that I like her.

    • Tedi says:

Charlize’s feet weren’t touching the groung because she was having an affair with Eric Thal. Mine wouldn’t be either.

  4. Pyewacket says:

I am one of the few who does not find her to be a good actress.

She is pretty, no doubt, but I think she is kind of terrible in the acting department. YES, I know she has an Oscar, but so do a lot of other actors who do not deserve them. Just because she got “ugly” for a role, doesn’t mean she was good in the part. Just my opinion.

  5. Estella says:

It makes me sad for her that she couldn’t be single for so many years. Hopefully, she will learn to enjoy it!

It’s nice to see a model on the cover of Vogue again. Charlize is gorgeous.

  6. I.want.shoes says:

“I thought, I don’t smoke like normal people. I smoke to die.” Yeah, I don’t get that. Because I thought smoking kills any way you smoke.

I would go see Young Adults!

  7. S says:

I saw a screening of Young Adult (the first one – yes I feel special :P), and maybe I just don’t “get” it, but I didn’t think it was very good at all. I don’t want to give anything away, but I don’t get all the Charlize acclaim around this one…maybe I just don’t like cheering for psychotic characters.

  8. Marni says:

I understand the ‘smoke to die’ comment.
I think you might have to be a ex heavy/heavy smoker to get it.
I love Charlize. She is a smart beautiful actress, plus shes not a fame whore. Its refreshing in todays Hollywood.

  9. Addie says:

I liked her with Stuart and hope she works things out with him and gets back together one day, he seemed like a really suportive partner.

If she really wants kids, I hope she considers coming back to South Africa and adopting from here. There is sooo much need.

  10. madpoe says:

I’m only posting on this cos of “being in the Bentley” line, Bentley is my last name so that struck me funny. =)

  11. len says:

It’s her neck. I know she’s pretty, but the neck is too thick for her head. Or her head is too small for her neck. Either way, the neck always distracts me.

  12. Green_Eyes says:

I will definitely watch it. I love her, think her interview is open and refreshing. Then again I have found her to be that way in televised interviews when asked questions by the audiences.

She is beautiful and it seemed she and Stuart had a wonderful relationship.. Sounds as if she has grown from it though.

  13. Derpy says:

Will read the full article a bit later, just stopping in to say that this wonderful new guy in my life, a great potential partner, could basically be Stuart Townsends twin and seeing the headline made me lick my lips.

Damn you Charlize, and your three million and one ways to turn me on, I love you.

  14. Maritza says:

I still think she and Stuart made such a beautiful couple, they looked perfect together. It’s nice that she has remained alone for a while not jumping from one relationship to another.

  15. kikay says:

@pyewacket;I’m one of the few too,who don’t find her that good in acting department, the one i can allow on deserving that oscar these days is Cate Blanchet, she can do texas accent so believable, american, russian, german, ukranian, you name it,she can do all accents with justice. But Charlize with british accents ,uugh!Angie too is good with british accent, lol though @vogue ,she seems all chilled out ,like an aging hippie pothead.

  16. mimi says:

Back in the day before she made it big, she pretty much slept her way to the top. People in South Africa like to forget it now that’s she is a big star.

No doubt she is talented now but there is something about her that irritates me. Something that irks me about her.

Maybe it’s the fact she showed her breasts in a lot of her movies and it irritates me when celebs do that in movies for no bloody good reason.

  17. Lisa says:

“I was highly addicted,” she confesses. “I thought, I don’t smoke like normal people. I smoke to die.”

My GOD I adore her even more after that quote…because I SO OVERSTAND IT!!! Because that’s how I have smoked and I am working really hard to break the habit…being a serial smoker where you KNOW that its bad for you…KNOW that you’re taking a drag off of death…and NOT REALLY GIVING A PLUCK!!!

  18. NotaBitterBetty says:

Charlize is a mediocre actress at best. She has an Oscar but does that really mean anything anymore (see Halle Berry). She’s beautiful but otherwise very meh.

  19. Carol says:

How sweet of Diane to change seats so that Charlize’s mom could be beside her. Charlize’s acting – just meh for me. I have no intention of seeing Monster so don’t know if the Oscar was deserved. But I certainly don’t race to a movie because she’s in it or think she stole any scene she’s in.

  20. Julie says:

She is really one of my all time favorites. I like her grounding, low key lifestyle and absolute beauty. Between her and Penelope Cruz, they are tops. Thanks for posting something about someone worthy of attention.

  21. kieslwoski says:

She is truly one of my favorite actresses currently working. I think she is truly super talented and to boot she is just drop dead naturally gorgeous.

Look at how she went about things she was never ever a famewhore, its all about the craft with her. I admire her so much for that.

  22. lucy2 says:

I think she is SO beautiful, and a very good actress. Monster wasn’t exactly a pleasant film, but I thought she was damn good in it.
Young Adult sounds really interesting, and I like Jason Reitman.

  23. kieslwoski says:

@16 (sorry can’t read your name),

How do you mean she slept her way to the top, I have never heard anything about that, could you elaborate.

  24. CJ says:

Monster was very disturbing, thanks to her performance. I think she deserved the Oscar. Love love love her. As a former smoker I can totally understand her comments about smoking.

And good luck Lisa, you can do it!!

  25. Rhiley says:

The movie does look good but Patrick Wilson has done something weird to his eyes since Sweet Home Alabama so it is kind of hard to look at him. I wish they had reunited her with Keanu Reeves because it has been a while since he has been in a movie and he is the hotness that Patrick Wilson isn’t.

  26. stella says:

She was good in Aeon Flux. Also, the movie ‘Celebrity’ with Kenneth Branagh. I read Charlize was ‘discovered’ at a Los Angeles bank, when she was yelling at a bank employee about not cashing her check or something.

  27. I LOVE HER MORE FOR BEING SO DOWN TO EARTH! SHE’S BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED, ELEGANT, SEXY!

  28. lucy2 says:

Rhiley, I think you’re thinking of Josh Lucas from Sweet Home Alabama. They do look a LOT alike though.

  29. mimi says:

Well I’m from South Africa and back before she became famous in America at least, it was a well known fact. A family friend of ours was an agent and well established in entertainment industry here in SA. He always told us that she was determined to make it big and was willing to do anything and anyone to get there.

But in her defense, I’m not surprised because I’m pretty sure many Hollywood actresses do this.

  30. Lairen says:

The trailer looks good! I loved Up in the Air and Thank You For Smoking, and this looks promising as well. Love Charlize.

  31. Bite me says:

Do audiences connect with her on the big screen

  32. Stubbylove says:

I love Charlize – she’s got acting chops, has great taste and is a classy broad. She is genuine and I appreciate her laid-back attitude and would smoke a fatty with her anytime. She’s been through some shit in her life and has come out the other end strong and smart – one can only respect that.

  33. Gypsy says:

I think she’s very beautiful and a good actress, my only problem was the lie about trying to save the relationship.
She was on tape/video (abroad on a junket) telling a male married actor that she loved him and behaving in a single gal status with him and then less than two months later announcing her breakup with Stewie.

If you look hard enough you’ll find the video.

  34. Jover says:

I still want to see models (and there are attractive not anorexic ones out there), on the cover of fashion mags; and correct me if i’m wrong but she’s a high school dropout – so maybe by hollywood standards she’s “intelligent” but not by any other. And graduating from high school these days isn’t that difficult.

  35. kieslowski says:

    @Gypsy,

Wait what?!?! MAy be she was just kidding aound?

  36. Turtle Dove says:

I like her, great interview, but holy crap am I jealous that she can take three years off work. (grumble, hate working all the time, grumble)

  37. Maya says:

She looks gorgeous, as always, but I have to say I don’t think the movie looks that good. Doesn’t look like an Oscar-worthy performance to me…give the nomination to Kirsten Dunst instead!

  38. layla says:

Lainey just outed her as a major, major b*tch. Really? She always seemed pretty chill to me. But then again, what do I know?!

I might actually love her (Charlize) more now! 🙂

    http://www.laineygossip.com/Articles/Details/21827/Charlize-Theron-is-great-as-a-bitch

  39. Amanda says:

Laya, Lainey is a massive bitch herself. She hates Charlize because Charlize ignored her for an interview one time like 5 years ago.
People say nothing but nice things about her, and if its because they are “required to” than that would apply to everyone in hOLLYWOOD, including people Lainey likes . so for people lainey likes, those things people are required to say must be true?

Also, i judge Charlize for what is in quotation marks, because those are her words. does not seem bitchy at all- really chill, smart, fun, funny.

i have been a fan of hers for a decade now, and people working on set say nothing but nice things.
    Dont always believe lainey.

  40. Amanda says:

mimi, you need to lay off the crack.
Charlize won a modeling contest in South Africa. she never even got an agent until the US and never acted in South Africa- what would she have need of an acting agent then- she was a ballet dancer and model.

Charlize never even acted until she got to America, so anything you claim to know from South Africa fails the truth factor test. She wasnt even 15 when she left south africa.

  41. layla says:

    @ Amanda (#39):
Laya, Lainey is a massive bitch herself. She hates Charlize because Charlize ignored her for an interview one time like 5 years ago.
    ————————

That made me giggle. Thanks! 🙂

  42. Camille says:

I like what she had to say about KStew- the ‘she doesn’t give a f***’ thing. Sounds about right.

As for the rest of the interview, well I am a bit meh when it comes to Charlize to be honest. She is pretty to look at but when it comes to acting I find her cold and a tad boring (She was great in Monster though!).
However she looks like she will be excellent in that Snow White movie.

  43. Debsa says:

Seriously, she broke up with Stuart Townsend…

  44. dj says:

In these pictures she looks like some gorgeous mermaid or selkie washed ashore. I love her and her acting.

  45. liv says:

    @Rhiley

i don’t think patrick wilson was in sweet home alabama

  46. Dana says:

I love Char too. She has the same kind of cool beauty as my other fave, Ashley Judd.

  47. 88Modesty88 says:

Yeah, I remember Charlize winning Mej Tiener (Miss Teen) all those years ago. She was on a morning TV thing just after it happened, with Rob Stewart (actor), who was in SA for some promotion for Tropical Heat (lol).
The show’s anchor got her to kiss him — soooo awkward!
I’ve followed her career ever since. I think she rocks.
She may have done the odd casting couch thing after she was “discovered” in the bank. I won’t fault her on that.
But it was never common knowledge in SA that she slept her way to the top — I love my gossip and have heard nothing like this — so Mimi is talking out of her downstairs.

  48. dylan says:

One of my favorite actresses! She can do it all! 2 Thumbs up!
