Duchess Kate visited disappointed schoolkids dubious of her royal status

Whilst “penciling in” a baby announcement for next summer, Duchess Kate has found herself wide open, with a block of someodd six months in which she really doesn’t have anything going on. What shall the Duchess do? NOTHING. No, seriously though, she’s going to begin to do some charity work. At least, that’s what we keep getting promised, although the start date seems to have changed again – we were supposed to be getting a list of Kate’s charitable patronages in January, but I think they’re moved it back until February or March. Remember when she was supposed to announce her some of her charities just after the wedding because she was studying so hard during her engagement? Sigh… Kate has turned all of us into Waitys now.

Anyway, The Mail reports that Kate was trying to do some kind of “undercover” (not really) research on a kids’ charity on Friday. Kate made an appearance at a London school, and she did it low-key, in jeans and without the phalanx of official royal photographers. There are still photos though – here at The Mail. Oh, and Kate was late. Latey Katie. My favorite parts of this story is when the kids are all “Princesses aren’t supposed to wear jeans” and “Damn, she’s REALLY skinny.”

When the Duchess of Cambridge made a secret visit last week to an art therapy charity she admires, she chose to dress down for the occasion. An informal jumper and jeans outfit, Kate decided, was appropriate for a private meeting, as she set out to learn more about an organisation that had written asking for her support.

Unfortunately for poor Kate – normally revered as a fashion icon – her venue was an inner London primary school, where young pupils had been mustered for 45 minutes in the car park to witness the occasion. And when casual Kate finally emerged from her fact-finding mission, her young fans were distinctly dubious about her Royal credentials, complaining: ‘She doesn’t look like a Princess. Where’s her dress?’

Kate, 29, has been visiting a number of charities and organisations in recent weeks as she prepares for her new role as a working Royal. She made the private visit to the Robert Blair primary school in Islington on Wednesday afternoon to find out more about The Art Room, a charity that works with challenging children and has a branch at the school.

‘Kate was dressed down in jeans and a jumper,’ a 21-year-old local woman who was collecting her three-year-old brother from the school told The Mail on Sunday. ‘The children had been told by the headmaster Mr Miller and the deputy headmaster Mr Murphy that a real-life Princess was coming to the school. They were so excited and were all told to wait in the car park to see her. When I got there, some of the children were so tired they were sitting on the ground. When she came out of The Art Room after the visit, Mr Miller walked her to her car. She posed for a picture and waved at the children before she was driven off. Some of the little ones were very confused. They were saying things like, “She doesn’t look like a Princess. Where’s her dress?” They didn’t believe it was the Princess they had seen on the television.’

Parents were only informed of the VIP visitor when they received a text from the school, which read: ‘If your child comes home and says they saw Kate Middleton today, it’s true! We had a surprise visit from the DOC to The Art Room.’

One mother, who asked not to be named, said: ‘We all got a text message from the school. All the children waited for her outside in the car park and they got to wave at her. We were told there were nine students in The Art Room who got to meet her. The children said she was very pretty. Some of the older children said she looked skinnier than she did in the photos.’

Mr Murphy, deputy head at Robert Blair – named after a formidable Scot who was London County Council’s chief education officer a century ago – said: ‘It was very exciting for us, but I can’t really talk about it.’

History of Art graduate Kate is said to be keen to work with The Art Room, which is based in Oxford but has its London branch at the Robert Blair primary school.

The charity pledges to ‘increase self-esteem, self-confidence and independence through art’ and works with children aged from five to 16 who are disruptive or withdrawn or have learning difficulties.

A spokesman confirmed Kate had been to visit them, saying: ‘The Duchess of Cambridge paid a private visit to The Art Room in order to find out more about what we do and gain a wider experience of the work within this sector.’

The charity wants funding so that it can provide five-days-a-week support for youngsters at its three Oxford centres and one in London. A spokesman for the Duchess said she has not decided which patronages she will take on but confirmed that The Art Room is one she is interested in working with.

The spokesman added: ‘It was one of a number of meetings, part of the Duchess getting to know the charitable sector. The Art Room wrote to her and caught her eye. She went to find out more about their work.’

[From The Mail]

So it seems like Kate isn’t just spending this time shopping and getting her hair done – she actually is doing some research, although she should work on arriving on time, especially when kids are involved. Good for Kate for actually doing some research… I guess. Whatever. She’s set the bar so low for herself, I can’t believe I’m actually praising her when she makes one trip to a school and she hasn’t even signed on to work with the charity for the long-term.

Spot on Kaiser. She has set the bar too low that anything she does is bound to seen as an ‘achievement’. She is absolutely pathetic.

    • Agnes says:

Yes! Pathetic AND pointless. I guess in keeping with the tradition of playing dress-up and being pointless that the Royals have going.

      • Anonymous says:

So true. They are all a waste of oxygen as far as I’m concerned.

Amazing that a photographer just “happened” to be there to catch photographs.

  2. hatsumomo says:

I wish she would just ease up on the black eyeliner for a while. She looks like a caricature of herself.

    • Poppy says:

I think it’s probably permanent/tattooed on eyeliner, otherwise she would have bowed to public opinion and softened it a bit by now, sadly I think both she and we are stuck with it till dooms day.

Maybe she can work on softening the eyebrows, hopefully she hasn’t had them tattooed on too.

  3. JH says:

It’s so silly, she’s such a lazy person, now she has people praising her for spending a couple of hours at a school? can you imagine that in real life? a lifetime of doing f**k all and then people giving you an approval nod for a morning’s “work”? Bollocks!

  4. samira677 says:

Are her charities really that important? I just don’t get why people are so excited about what she’s going to be involved with. These are little kids so I’m sure they expect her to be in a ballgown or looking really glamorous. I don’t think they were personally attacking her for not being good enough to be a princess.

    • JulieM says:

We’re not excited about which charities she’s going to support. We would just like her to do something, anything more than what she is doing now. Which is not much.

Getting to know the charitable sector? She had six years to do that if it had been a priority in her life.

She is literally vanishing before our eyes.

  5. melmel says:

Will she be doing some shopping afterwards?

    • Miladie29 says:

Of course, she’s earned it! She went to a school for 10 minutes, that is enough to tire her out. She needs some retail therapy to make her feel refreshed again.

Honestly, though, even in so few photos she looks so uncomfortable, like she didn’t really want to be there and was just doing this to meet her “quota” of doing something and being seen doing something.

      She never looks genuinely interested.

She probably spent more time getting her hair done and putting on her awful makeup, that was why she was so late.

    • HoustonGrl says:

She actually was photographed shopping later that day I think: http://www.popsugar.com/Kate-Middleton-Shopping-Zara-Pictures-20469726

hahaha, she’s earned it right? ;o)

      • iseepinkelefants says:

That’s how she should’ve dressed at the school.

      • Hmmm says:

This is a reply to #5 @iseepinkelephants. I’m on a Mac and Firefox and it seems that there is no reply button.

You said: That’s how she should’ve dressed at the school.

Yeah, Waity Dolittle is clueless. Fitting, that name of “Waity”. Now she makes children wait.

It seems she lacks the intelligence and manners to even understand that being late even for proles is a no-no. Ye gods, how dumb can you be!

She thinks that “dressing down” is the way to go. She has no thought of how to honour people, show respect. She thinks that getting down and dirty with the proles shows solidarity. Jesus, she is beyond dumb.

Lacking any form of gravitas she shows her true colours.

It doesn’t say much for the future (blatantly reluctant, ungrateful, useless, clueless) monarchy (I’m looking at you, William). Scary, that. Down with royalty, they are now an embarrassment. So says this Commonwealth subject. Gad, I’m mortified that they represent us even if it’s superficially so.

  6. yt says:

Perhaps she should have a special ball gown and tiara to wear to all events with children present, or perhaps the news media should not make a big deal of her wearing jeans.

  7. Tiffany says:

One thing I have learned in life is that children will not let you get away with shit. Kate, when the kids only know of you because of your wardrobe (which is discussed in the home by adults) get it together.

  8. Cathy says:

That brown purse doesn’t go with the outfit she is wearing. But I do like the pink shirt though

  9. Franny says:

If you are going to insist on wearing jeggings as pants, at least wear them with boots or cute flats. Ugly tennis shoes do not count.

And I say this as a huge Kate fan.

  10. call_in says:

this girl is gonna look so rough in 10 years.

  11. Anne says:

When children part of a program that encourages self esteem and not judging based on appearances makes comments about your weight, you KNOW that you are way too thin.

Go eat something, Kate. At this point, even a salad will do you good.

  12. inthekitchen says:

I don’t think she needed to have worn a ballgown, but a suit (like the one she wore when she boarded the plane to Canada) would have been much more appropriate. Jeans? Seriously? This was basically a work meeting and she was dressed as if she were going for a beach stroll with Pipps.

I agree with everyone else who said it’s really gotten to a pathetic state where we are ready to give her any credit for going to “research” meeting.

I also think it was horrible to keep those children out in the cold for 45 minutes and then just give a wave and hop in her car to be whisked away. She should have shook hands and chatted with this. Who on earth is advising her?!

    FAIL.

    • CloudSailor says:

My thoughts exactly! Those poor kids had to wait in the parking lot for 45 minutes in winter and get a lousy wave. Not to mention they were like 10 feet away from her, so I think they were not really complaining because of the jeans or her being skinny. They were disappointed because they imagined a real princess to be kind and chatty with them. Oh, but I shouldn’t be so judgmental, there were some chosen ones inside the building who could actually meet HRH.
Ahh and to think what expectations I had when they got married…

  13. serenitea says:

She could have worn sweatpants for all I care but she should have spent some time with those kids waiting for her out in the parking lot — even 5 minutes would have been much appreciated. Guess she had to rush off for a flash sale at Top Shop.

    • anne_000 says:

I agree with you that she should have spent some time with the children she made wait for 45 minutes in the parking lot.

I wonder why she was late in the first place? She has an entourage & could have told the school to let the kids back into their classrooms and into their comfortable seats because she wasn’t going to be there for nearly another hour.

This is the same kind of example of her lazy mentality when she didn’t type up that very short letter to the terminally ill kid, but instead just scribbled his name & her name on it. Also, nevermind that she misspelled her own name on that same letter wrong cuz she couldn’t have cared less.

  14. Emily says:

Haha kids are so funny. I remember being disappointed when I saw Princess Diana on TV, because I didn’t think that princesses should have short hair. 😛

  15. Denise says:

God…..again with the sling back espadrilles….in autumn! Both sisters must own stock in an espadrilles shoe company. She is just so underwhelming really.

    • bluhare says:

Denise, the photo with the white jacket and espadrilles is from the night before her wedding.

    • Lady D says:

The Daily Mail (ha ha) says that Britain is experiencing a heat wave. Temps in the mid-60’s. Roses are blooming, ducklings are being born. Maybe that’s why the shoes. And on a side note: I don’t care who you are, being late is really, really rude.

  16. Deeme says:

I am no fan – not at ALL – but I think she dressed down so she could interact with the children without intimidating them. It sounds like she went into a class that was in session so she just wanted to seem like a normal person. I understand and respect that choice.

  17. Miladie29 says:

She didn’t have to appear in a fancy dress. See the woman she’s talking to in the first photo, wearing the light blue dress? Kate could have worn something like that, we all know she goes shopping about 50 times a month, so she must have a lot of clothes. There’s really no excuse wearing a pair of jeans to meet school kids.

It’s almost disrespectful, isn’t it? It’s like she thinks, “Oh well, I’m just gonna dress like I’m going grocery shopping to see the students. They won’t mind because I’m a princess now and they all know who I am. They’re just kids.”

But the children did mind. I think their comments about her were fueled by her being late for 45 minutes and then turning up in such a casual outfit. If you’re going to be that late, at least make sure you look really good and presentable. The kids were probably miffed that they waited so long in the cold only for this plainly dressed, average-looking woman to come out and wave at them.

Look at her hair, it looks like it’s just been brushed. There are photos of her last week shopping in ZARA and she looked more formal and presentable than she did on this school visit. Her hair on that shopping trip was curled and blow-dried, and she had thick makeup.

She spends more time on her looks when going shopping than when visiting a potential charity.

I don’t know if she’s obnoxious or she really has no idea what she’s doing.

But hey, kudos for doing “something”, Kate!

  18. bluhare says:

Wow, Kaiser, you really have everyone on the Waity train now.

I’m not as big a fan of her as I used to be, but I think a bit more of her than apparently the rest of you do.

William calls the shots in their marriage, so what she does is going to be a direct reflection of what he wants.

    • LAK says:

That is becoming apparent. He is so uptight about controlling his image and information, but by choosing Kate, who only does what she is told and approved by him, has left himself wide open. Look at Kate, and judge William people. She’s an empty vessel filling with whatever he chooses.

That said, maybe further down the line she will rebel. After all, Charles Married Diana thinking she was a docile mousey creature who would do what she was told…boy was he wrong, and did that mouse ROAR..LOL!

      • iseepinkelefants says:

The only “rebelling” we’re seeing Waity do is being more open to the cameras (she really angles for them now). She doesn’t have any of that Diana fire so we won’t ever see her step out of line. She wants “it” too badly, and unlike Diana she doesn’t have any other option (she’s not nearly as wealthy as Diana or her family were and she’s not titled like Diana was).

  19. Coco says:

Sad, so very sad, pathetic actually ! I can’t believe that this useless bum is a role model to some women.

( Oh ! I think there is a fellow blogger who goes by the name ” Coco ” so I’m wondering if I should change my username !? )

  20. WOM says:

So Kate goes to a private meeting with a charity organization, and the school that houses (but doesn’t administer the charity and didn’t set up the meeting) arranges a photo op by making young children stand in a parking lot for nearly an hour (until she is LEAVING and going elsewhere), and the Duchess is the villain.

    Did I get that right?

Because to me this piece reads like Kate was ambushed and the school is run by twits. If there was no retinue with Kate, and no official photographer waiting her arrival, she didn’t expect to see the children after her meeting. I think her clothes are appropriate (meaning: washable) for an art classroom.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

She wasn’t ambushed. You go to a school, expect to meet the children. If the school told the parents ahead of time that their children would be meeting Waity than obviously they worked this out with her people beforehand. They wouldn’t usher her out and so oh by the way we’ve kept the kids waiting for you.

What’s sad is that she went outside saw the children and couldn’t even be bothered to shake their hands and do some small talk. She just waved and got in the car.

      • WOM says:

I don’t believe the parents were told ahead of time, based on this quote:

‘If your child comes home and says they saw Kate Middleton today, it’s true! We had a surprise visit from the DOC to The Art Room.’

It’s not “we are having a surprise visit,” but “had” meaning it’s already happened. If this were a true meet-and-greet the palace would’ve publicized the event beforehand, not merely confirm after the fact that she was present. Plus there would have been more press, not two grainy, candid shots.

  21. Wallie says:

Where does it say she was late? The article states that the children were outside for 45 minutes not that she was late. This was a private visit so that Kate could see the charity in action and the school herded the children outside to see her when she left the art room. If there was poor planning (more reactive action) it was on part of the school officials. Kate is mediocre but this is placing blame when she did nothing wrong

  22. Kellie says:

She looks a mess for a visit even if its informal. My spidey sense are tingling. Either she was told she had less than an hour to get herself together for this appearance or she is all wrong all the time.

  23. HoustonGrl says:

She’s been in the public eye for 10 years and is just now starting to contribute in a modest way to society. She’s actually been photographed at an event at least once or twice a week recently, so it’s not really fair to say she does “nothing.” But because she really didn’t do ANYTHING for so long, it’s kind of irrelevant at this point whatever she might achieve. People already have an image of her imprinted in their mind. It’s going to take a lot more than a few school visits and fancy cocktail parties to change that (and besides, people don’t really consider that ‘work’ now do they?).

I think poor Kate is kind of having to swim upstream at this point, which probably explains the weight loss. Obviously work doesn’t come naturally to her and now that she has some expectations on her, she might be crumbling under the pressure.

As far as all the pregnancy rumors, I kind of hope it’s true for her sake because it might be the only thing that salvages her image at this point.

  24. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Are any of these photos from the event? I’m kind of confused.

  25. Kim says:

It would have been ridiculous if she dressed up to visit an art school. If she had dressed up then the kids would be saying who does she think she is wearing a dress to a school.

  26. moja31 says:

It’s awfully convenient that after weeks of grumbling in the press about her doing nothing but shopping, one of her supposedly many charity meetings just happens to get papped.

  27. iseepinkelefants says:

Obviously the DM is up her ass but why is it that no one points out that she was going to be a housewife and spend her time taking care of William (this is why she was given more “holiday” time) at their little Welsh cottage, but every week she’s in London living it up at KP?

I guess after 9 years the honeymoon bit isn’t really there anymore, but damn girl pretend for your husband’s sake. He used to be loved and could do no wrong but now he’s associated with her and she’s bringing him down. I’ve seen more and more comments criticizing him these days.

    • LAK says:

the excuses change every time a deadline looms. ‘Housewife’ was the excuse given immediately after the wedding. That changed to ‘princess training’, and now we have ‘charity research’. I can not wait for the excuse that will be given in January, although as Kaiser keeps pointing out, that deadline appears to have slipped to February.

What Palace seems to forget is that they have given a variation on the same themes for her not working prior to the wedding. It seemed then her excuse was that she wasn’t royal, and couldn’t take up any official position which was absurd given she was a private citizen, but as her boss at jigsaw helpfully explained, her life was about William, his needs, his schedule.

  28. The Original Mia says:

It’s obvious she wasn’t planning on being photographed. She’s not showing off her engagement ring the way she usually does.

  29. Cerulean says:

Waity Waity Waity. She is just all kinds of lazy. Probably lack of energy due to malnutrition.
Seriously, she should have dressed better and interacted with the children. How hard is that? Golden opportunity squandered. But she doesnt care enough.
She is not the least bit attractive. Not one bit.

  30. Meg says:

If she IS going shopping she needs to invest in a few more pairs of shoes…if I see those black wedges or the nude LK Bennett pumps one more time I’m going to scream.
Also, a sweater AND a coat, but open toed summer shoes? Waity needs to get over herself and get a stylist, stat.

  31. NancyMan says:

    WOW, ‘celeBITCHY’ is right…

  32. Heather says:

FYI folks, the pictures with the pink sweater and wedges are from the week of the wedding not current photos.

  33. dahlia1947 says:

I think she looks good for a visit to a school. And someone said that it’s in the 60’s over there so the wedges are fitting! Are there pics of her just waving and getting in the car?

People should ease up on this girl, seriously.

  34. Kelly says:

Haha, those kids made some funny comments

  35. Laughing Librarian says:

She should have worn that fabulous hat from the Nov.11 ceremonies-then she and the wee ones could all have played dress up and had a lovely time.

(If Kate only gets to wear the hat once, please, may I have it?)

  36. Sweet_Bamboohat says:

Well, January next year they’ll say it’s Diamond Jubilee year so they can’t have Kate overshadow the Queen- thus we’d have to wait until 2013 for Kate charity projects. She’d get pregnant and maybe even giving birth during 2013, so we’ll have to give her time focusing on her baby. Maybe until the kid reach age 4 or 5. But no waittt, we need a spare or two, so it’ll be another setbacks.

No matter, we already wait for several years may as well wait a bit longer. Wait, her kids are starting school now, she’d want to focus on them like other ordinary moms. And what about graduations? She ofcourse has to focus on them! Wait, the kids are doing their gap years- mom has to focus her attention unto them. Kids will graduate from Uni- and start the first royal jobs- must wait too. Kids getting married, as good MIL she has to guide her in-laws. Waittt grandchildren are knocking the door, waits for more time. Well, she’s old now can’t she be just like other retiree, she’s old and weary- she has to retire into peace quite life.

Keep eking the bit, all her life would be about her doing ordinary things. SHould never be a working royal in the first place if all of her documented life would be about as mundane as ordinary folks.
