Adele to cover March issue of US Vogue, having plus-sized clothes specially made

Adele tweeted the above photo a few days ago with the caption, “Back on the grind. Hair and make up did. Merry Christmas! Axx.” It’s thought that Adele was having her hair and makeup done for a big photo shoot. Possibly with… American Vogue! OMG! Is Anna Wintour smoking crack over there? First she puts certified oldie Meryl Streep on the cover, and now Adele?!? Adele is deserving of a cover, of course. She was deserving of a cover months and months ago, but Wintour was too busy promoting Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, Adele’s 21 is one of the best selling albums of 2011, and everyone is in love with her. So finally, Wintour got with the program.

Unfortunately, Adele is allegedly having her Vogue pictorial clothes specially made. Because, you see, she’s not a sample size, and the fashion world has absolutely NO IDEA what to do if a girl dares to be larger than a size 2. So Wintour had to personally ask designers to make some clothes for Adele.

Curvaceous singer Adele is in line to hit the fashion jackpot if rumours she is to appear on the cover of US Vogue are true. Having already graced the cover of the British edition in September, WWD report the soulful star will hit American newsstands for the coveted March 2012 issue.

Second only to the famed September issue, the Spring edition is the most important in the Vogue calender and featuring a fuller-figured star marks a courageous move by the fashion magazine. The last time a plus-sized star graced the cover of US Vogue was Jennifer Hudson back in 2007.

Editor Anna Wintour is said to have asked a host of designers to come up with a series of cover-worthy outfits for the size 16 chart-topper to wear on the shoot.

Although we do hope Adele will get to show them off on the cover as her appearance on the UK edition was closely cropped to just her head and shoulders.

With six Grammy nominations and the best-selling album of 2011, 21, under her belt the talented 23-year-old also seems to be carving out a career as a style icon too. The signing by the American magazine is the latest in an ever-increasing list of cover shoots for Adele who has also featured on the front of Cosmopolitan and The Gentlewoman, proving that the more voluptuous figure sells as well as the usual stick-thin models and celebrities.

According to reports Taylor Swift was in line to fill the esteemed fashion spot but has been moved to the February issue instead. Another surprising star to feature on the January cover of US Vogue was Meryl Streep, who at 62 is the oldest person to grace the cover in the magazine’s history.

[From The Mail]

I believe that the March issue is the annual “Power Issue” correct? I think so. Which I could see for Adele – she’s totally one of the most powerful women in music these days.

By the way, Adele is still recovering from her throat surgery to repair her damaged vocal chords. That’s why she kind of looks like crap in the header photo – well, not like crap, but she just looks tired and kind of sickly. Apparently, her surgery went well, but Adele is still going to take a big break – she recently said that she has no plans to record a new album anytime soon.

Here are some shots from Adele’s Vogue UK pictorial earlier this year:

    VB must be spitting cotton!!

  2. Bite me says:

Good for her… But it’s time to start putting models back on fashion mag… Very few actresses have the model look

    • kazoo says:

I miss models on fashion magazines. Sigh.

    • Shoe_lover says:

Vogue Australia still has models on the cover. I read both Vogue US and Vogue Australia and i personally think Vogue Australia is better- and thats not bias just because i am an Aussie

      • kazoo says:

Shoe_Lover, I will have to check out the Australian version. Do they tend to feature only Aussie models, or is there more diversity? Either way, I’d appreciate it over American Vogue (which I find to be the least inspired Vogue edition).

      • Carolyn says:

@kazoo…Aus Vogue has Aus (including the gorgeous Samantha Harris) and overseas models… and the occasional celebrity. A lot of diversity over here. Great idea putting Adele on the cover. Our mag also has far too many ads and not enough content. I know ads generate revenue but please, 4 perfume ads, a major makeup brand and a watch brand before you get to the contents page is a bit much.

  3. brin says:

Love Adele…so beautiful and talented. She is right to take time off, she will be back and better than ever!

  4. lisa says:

I don’t get the “specially made clothes” I know she is not a sample size. The vast majority of women are not. Even actresses. The clothes are pinned and whatever for the magazine shoot. There are designers that make clothes for women that are not 1 digit in size. They could have taken this opportunity to highlight one of those designers. Have them make something high end for her to wear. Getting a designer that doesn’t design for women that are not 1 digit makes no sense. Especially since this would be a ONE shot thing. It’s not like they will continue.

Go find and spotlight one of those designers. I would be impressed by that.

    • Tierra says:

Thats a great idea. I never understood the need to make everyone appear to be smaller than they are just for an outfit that most people wouldn’t be caught dead in. I just hope they dont photo-shop her into oblivion b/c of her size.

    • Nanz says:

      Really good point.

    • Blue says:

      Fabulous idea!

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

      Excellent post 🙂

    • Kim says:

The designers who clothes appear in Vogue dont make size 16 clothes period. So for Adele to get designer clothes for her Vogue shoot they would have to be custom made. Designers consider size 8 huge & usually dont make past that size and a few size 12’s if your lucky =( sad but true

  5. ShanKat says:

Looks like her nose dropped a couple sizes, too.

  6. gillie says:

The top photo is reminiscent of Christina Hendricks’ look in Mad Men. Very chic

  7. jferber says:

Love your comment, Asli. Adele is simply gorgeous.

  8. Hautie says:

This news must be killing Victoria Beckham.

Now Anna did put Oprah on Vogue… so that will make it 3 women, who were over the size of 2, that made the cover.

  9. Aria says:

    Stunning lady! So beautiful!

  10. lucy2 says:

I really hope this happens. She’s beautiful and talented and has had one of the most successful young music careers in ages – she deserves it.
I bet the tiny sample sizes didn’t fit Rihanna either, but no one made a big deal about that. Don’t know why such attention is paid to Adele’s size.
She takes a great photo, I hope they do her justice on the cover.

  11. the original bellaluna says:

So, this will be the issue I actually buy.

    lisa & Asli: Excellent points!

  12. LW says:

Adele has clearly lost A LOT of weight (presumably because of her surgery). I bet Anna will want to get that photo shoot done ASAP before Adele starts eating solid foods again.
Cuz, yea, Oprah did get a cover. But if memory serves me she “had” to lose mucho weight before.
And just a side note about Vogue. Where is the freakin’ content? I bought the recent Charlize issue and couldn’t believe how the mag has deteriorated. Maybe it is time for Miz Anna to retire…Or is it the same, and now I’m old enough to see thru the silliness?

    • the original bellaluna says:

Aren’t there like 80 pages of ads now? Or am I remembering big?

      • Lady D says:

Every time I pick up a magazine at the dr.’s I have to leaf through 15-20 pages of ads before I can find actual comments or articles. Even freaking golf and fishing magazines are all ads for 10 pages or more. I’m allergic to perfume and I hate it when they put “sample” perfume ads in their pages. I went to Rada a few weeks ago, and every page had an ad floating up from the bottom. Had to clk to get rid of the ad. Even in the comments. Talk about shoving ads in your face. I was anti-Radar before, but now? Ditto TMZ and their half page ads you have to clk to get rid of. I know they need ads. I sold ads for 2.5 years for a newspaper. My ads were paying all the bills, wages, overhead, etc. Ad clients are needed to run any business, but holy hell I’m getting sick of all the ads.

    • Gine says:

Their sales are way, way down, too. So I think they’re desperate for advertiser’s money.

    • snapnhiss says:

You’re right, her face is MUCH thinner in the header photo. I wonder how much she lost.

  13. hillbilly in the corner says:

That is a really beautiful young woman. just pray they don’t talk her into doing the Jennifer Hudson died thing…Jennifer was a really beautiul girl with her heavier weight but now that she has lost so much weight she has the head to big for her body look and lost that lovely soft glow she had ..now she looks hard , yes she has a knock out figure but I garentee you she has a absolute brilliant undergarment designer or a great plastic surgeon cause you can’t loose that much weight and not have floopy skin hanging everywhere…theres no amount of toning up in the world will tighten stretched out skin…
when I was a girl a model size was size 10 ..what every teenage girl asspired to be…thats a hell of a lot more reasonable then a size 2……!!!!

    • the original bellaluna says:

Word, sister! Adele is S-O-O-O-O beautiful.

(We call that head-too-big-for-the-body thing the “lollipop” look.)

    • sammib says:

I know right! Cindy Crawford and co were size 8-10. Achievable, healthy & sexy. Now women are sold the impossible..look like a 12 yr old boy/girl. We have to starve, be miserable (hangry all the time)or we have somehow failed. I saw an advert for plus sized clothing who’s range started at size 12. When did SIZE 12 become plus size??!!!! Ridiculous. Its abuse of women.

  14. Girl says:

    Agreed.

  15. Shelly says:

I think she’s beautiful and sexy and not what I would call plus-sized or fat. I’m sick of women who look healthy being called plus-sized. Some women are naturally curvier, without being fat, so even though they may wear a larger size they are proportioned and not “plus” or obese. I’m sick of this obsession over sizes. Adele is more beautiful than most any of the stick figures Anna normally features.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yes – thank you! For the mags, it should be about beauty, not anorexia. Almost all of those size 2 models are actually ugly. Adele is stunning, regardless of size. Come on, look at those drop dead gorgeous pics.

  16. Alexa says:

Wow! She’s so pretty! (I’m not really current with today’s big music stars, so I never really saw her before.)

  17. su says:

urm, have you seen beyonce boobies- them girls are HUGE1 and she HAS gained weight, spesh around the face.

  18. kazoo says:

Whatever. I just need her to recover well so that I can see her in concert!!!!

  19. Amanda G says:

I think you should correct the first paragraph…21 *IS* the best selling album of 2011. In fact, I think I read that it’s the best selling album in the U.S. since 2004. Go Adele!

It looks like she lost some weight in the top picture, but it might be the angle of her head…

  20. poopsicle says:

She needs to lose weight… A healthy weight of course. 🙂

  21. T.C. says:

Is Vogue still relevant when they have people like Blake Lively on the cover every chance they get? Being on the cover of this magazine is a drop in the hat for this talented lady.

  22. dena says:

She lost weight and does NOT look good. She glows as her former self…not now.

  23. Lauren says:

Adele is healthy looking..gorgeous skin & hair. Adele is so intelligent and beautiful.. her voice..is just earthy and honest. I hate when people try to degrade Adele by saying she is Plus Sized. I am a size 4, and i dont consider her Adele to be Plus Sized..she is radiant, honest & brilliant..those qualities are Sizeless.

  24. wunder says:

    For goodness sakes, she’s a singer-not a super model!

With her talent, she doesnt need to be a size 2.

  25. dj says:

Adele is so beautiful! Her voice is souful (my preference) and richly layered. I am a little sad that I am so excited somebody FINALLY has amazing talent, intelligence and beauty! Godspeed on her recovery.

  26. Brenda says:

LOVE Adele!!!! She is such a great singer!!! I never buy that magazine, but I will definitely be buying a copy of this one if she is on the cover. And also I remember when I was 13 all the girls on tv wanted to be a size 8 cause it was the perfect size. The girls who were a size 8 were so beautiful to me and I really wanted to be a size 8. By the time my sisters were 13, a size 8 was considered plus sized. It’s such crap that what was once healthy and desirable is now considered fat.

  27. Callumna says:

An industry that can’t regularly make clothes that look good on THIS woman can’t dress women.

This is what she’s supposed to look like. She’s at her glowing, luscious weight.

  28. Dana M says:

Adele is stunning and a marvelous talent. Love her!
