Carrie Underwood loses all respect for celebrities who endorse a candidate

The list of celebrities that Carrie Underwood doesn’t respect must be getting pretty long. Yesterday she told website Just Jared that she thinks celebs should keep their politics to themselves, and she doesn’t respect them if they publicly support a candidate.

Carrie Underwood has a message for Oprah, Diddy, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and even Heidi and Spencer: Don’t publicly back candidates for office.

“There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly,” she tells TV Guide, as excerpted by Just Jared. “I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.

“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she goes on. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.

“Music is where you go to get away from all the BS,” adds Underwood, who recently apologized for saying ex Tony Romo still calls her. “Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

I think it’s fine to keep your political opinions to yourself, but it is just as okay to shout them from the roof. Music is no one thing. It shouldn’t just be an escape. That’s one of many things it can be. It can also be about a cause, about a change, and moving people towards action. That’s pretty much the opposite of an escape.

Underwood would probably have a big problem with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, and Diddy. All of them have shown up in Philadelphia encouraging people to vote for Obama.

“Everyone is excited and it’s time,” the singer tells PopEater. “I feel like we have grown so much as a nation and we will continue to grow because of Mr. Obama.”

Beyoncé’s admiration goes beyond just the Democratic candidate himself, and extends to his entire family. “I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Obama, his wife and his children, and they are the American dream,” she says. “They are so elegant, so classy, so intelligent and everything that I want to be. They make me really proud of my country.”

The Grammy winner’s husband Jay-Z has already been a strong supporter of the campaign, performing at Obama benefits and rallies across the country.

Jay-Z and Diddy both talked about how important Pennsylvania is to Obama, and encouraged everyone to get out and vote today.

“John McCain desperately needs Philadelphia, but you can tell him ‘You cannot have Pennsylvania,'” said Jay-Z.

But McCain does have a chance to win Pennsylvania’s 21 electoral votes, if voter turnout is low in urban centers like Philadelphia.

The star-studded cast of this block rally is determined to make sure that doesn’t happen.

They’re working hard to get new voters to the polls.

“It’s about the youth vote, it’s about the long lines and getting them prepared. The youth vote will decide the next president of the United States,” said Sean “Diddy” Combs. “They said we wouldn’t come out, they said we wouldn’t vote, but we’re going to shock the world tomorrow.”

[From ABC Local]

I remember actress Patricia Heaton complaining several years ago about how hard it is to be a conservative in Hollywood. Certainly they are in the minority, and I understand why a lot of people there would simply prefer to avoid political discussions completely. But I think Underwood’s assertion that celebs speaking about political issues that matter to them somehow makes them unworthy of respect is rather extreme. I seriously doubt many people who were going to vote for McCain will switch their vote around because Jay-Z and Beyonce like Obama.

    🙄 Oh please

  2. Christina says:

i kind of agree… i think they should shut the hell up… they can motivate people to vote… but when they attempt to motivate people to vote FOR someone… it annoys me… i feel like it’s abuse of power… i don’t feel the same way about a particular bill though… i think you can voice your opinion about a bill if you can clarify what it stands for fairly well… but candidates can be a lot more complex and an individual will easily be motivated to vote for someone because they don’t want to do their own research and just “go with the flow” and that pisses me off…

  3. Brown Sugar says:

I feel that anyone can say who they support celebrity or not. if you are that weak minded to let some tv/movie star influence you then you are stupid. even if they are your family members. vote on issues and that alone

  4. Dizzybenny says:

hum! so i guess she’s a McCain fan then?!? 😆

  5. Murmur says:

Sounds like she’s the one who needs to put a filter on her mouth. It tends to get her in trouble a lot.

  6. Syko says:

That’s okay, I don’t respect her much either.

  7. kb says:

What would we be without the First Ammendment? Free speech is our privelege as long as it isn’t abused – and supporting/endorsing a political candidate certainly is not abuse. If anything it promotes conversation and banter about the election and stirs new and old voters back to the polls. Carrie can pubiclicy criticize celebrities for their endorsements under the same law that those celebrities are able to voice their political opinions. Her personal belief about not wanting to sway someone’s political belief based on her level of celebrity comes off as a little condescending and misses the greater value of using her celebrity simply to get involved in the election/promote voter turnout/etc.

    dumb.

  9. Mairead says:

LOL Dizzy- that was my thought also 😉 Perhaps it’s more than just her not wanting to be lumped in with Speidi.

The point about being conservative in Hollywood is a good one though – Dirk Benedict (Face off the A Team & Starbuck off Battlestar) was being interviewed on local radio and he said that he definitely lost work because of it.

But I think she needs her head read if she thinks that politics (or the social issues that inform politics) have no place in music; Dylan, U2, Springsteen anyone?

  10. Baholicious says:

@Dizzy: My thought exactly as soon as I read her remarks. And yep Mairead, she’s distancing herself from Speidi…just enough to fall into Ted Nugent’s camp.

  11. Bodhi says:

She totally needs a music history lesson…

  12. geekaziod says:

Oh she is a snobish silly little girl. Music should NEVER be an escape but a window into souls. People get drunk to escape, or take drugs, or some other self-distructing action to ëscape”. Music is anything but an escape it’s reality and unlike an escape it motiavtes, inspires, vents, and refreshes the human spirit.

  13. Codzilla says:

I get what she’s saying, and agree to a certain extent when it comes to turds like Diddy telling me who to support. But instantly losing all respect for a celebrity who makes his/her political beliefs public is definitely an overreaction, to say the least.

Edit: geekazoid, why can’t music be an escape? It can be anything to anyone, and therein lies the beauty.

  14. masquedance says:

I hope she misspoke and only meant that she loses respect for those “celebrities” who use politics to promote themselves (like Speidi) or boost their ratings (like ALL the annoying hags on The View). Everyone has the right to support the candidate of their choice and my respect has increased for those celebrities who get out there and do the grunt work with the rest of us like working the phone banks, going door-to-door, or standing in line to vote without tipping off a camera crew or the paparazzi. A celebrity’s endorsement of a candidate is NEVER going to sway my vote, but sadly there seems to be some mindless people out there, as the US Magazine site has a poll that actually asks “Which celeb influenced you the most this election” without offering none of the above as a choice! 😯

  15. Jag says:

Since when aren’t celebrities human and entitled to vote – and support – whomever they choose? Just like the rest of us.

I lose respect for a woman who wears a dress that shows almost every inch of her bra-less breasts more than I’d ever lose respect for that same woman telling me her choice for President.

  16. lanette says:

Carrie underwear can suck it! the press wants to get all up in the business of celebrities any other time so why shouldn’t they say who they are endorsing….?

give me an effin break/brake chica…
like these celebs give a damn about what this country TRICK thinks. Hey carrie have you ever heard of free speech it is the 1st amendment.

  17. stellapurdy says:

Last I knew celebrities paid taxes too which should afford them the liberty to choose a candidate and speak their mind about it.

  18. Mike says:

Wow- lose respect from America’s most popular karaoke singer?
    I bet diddy really cares

  19. Leandra says:

She doesn’t want the celebrities endorsing candidates because she’s obviously a Republican. What a self-righteous b##tch.

  20. eh. the queen of england doesn’t like me. i don’t know what i did to that sour puss, but so what. get over yourself hind-ass.

  21. vdantev says:

I’m sure they’re crushed by this.

  22. val says:

Who gives a crap what she thinks!
Shes just trying to get notice.
Go back to your trailer Carrie!

  23. jennifer says:

It doesn’t seem to matter WHAT this chick says – if it comes out of HER mouth I’m INSTANTLY offended… 😆

  24. makessense says:

I totally agree with Carrie. It’s a big turnoff when celebrities endorse a candidate and then also try to discredit the other side. I do not spend money on celebrities who endorse certain candidates.

  25. sauvage says:

@ Mairead: The Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Neil Young, The Verve…

@ Syko: Sometimes I am plainly in love with you after reading your comments. This is one of those times. She publicly bitched about her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend, trying to disturb their relationship in the most transparent and immature way – and she’s talking about RESPECT? Carrie Underwood should just try to grow a brain.

  26. mel says:

WTF? This is America and we have the freedom to express our opinion celebrity or not. I cant stand Carrie…she thinks she’s all that n a bag of chips!!! Go milk cows!!!

  27. Christina says:

come on, this is not a fight about the first amendment… nobody takes that right away by giving an opinion… but, think about it… why would a celebrity endorse someone? because they know they have the power to influence the masses… but not the qualification… i say it’s abuse of power… they have a much bigger platform and should be careful about the opinions they express… the level of their influence is not on par with the level of their qualification… so i say, they should shut it…to a certain extent…

  28. Candygirl says:

I agree with the majority of folks here. I think the American People are smart enough to think for themselves instead of riding the heels of some celebrity.

    Carrie give us enough Credit.

And who cares if celebrtiies publically annouce who they are voting for – they’re not the only ones. There’s ton of us “Regular Folks” wearing Obama,Hilary and McCain shirts, stickers, etc.

America is wonderful!! I’m glad I’m a part of the United States – we rock!!!

  29. K El says:

As Brian Molko puts it: Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one. Good or bad, we’re all the same.

  30. Lizzy says:

Hey Christina, why would a celebrity endorse someone? Oh I dunno, maybe because they were ASKED by a reporter who they were voting for? Are they’re supposed to not answer because their response might sway some ignorant, uneducated fan? And who cares if their opinion is “unqualified”–it’s their opinion and they have the right (like every other American) to express it.

  31. Tyra says:

    Get a effin life Carrie.

  32. Anne says:

I agree with Carrie. Without Oprah Winfrey (and Madonna), how would Obama have fared? Perhaps without their widely, publicized support of Obama, he might have lost this election. But we’ll never know. Thank you Ms. Winfrey. (Sure, don’t use your show as a platform, but by golly, go all out every other way and use your celebrity status, and finances, to influence millions of people to vote for whom YOU want to win.) As for loud mouth Madonna, stay in England.

  33. brista says:

I’m pretty sure most people didn’t vote for him because Oprah said to. Maybe a couple did, because there are always a couple of sheep in any group, but I bet a couple of people voted for McCain because their church teachers suggested it.

And, uh, I actually didn’t even know that Madonna supported him.

As far as celebs supporting candidates, I don’t really care, except in the cases of Heidi Montag or WTFever her name is, because she shouldn’t be a celebrity in the first place.

  34. Lori says:

I agree with Carrie. She’s smart enough to realize that no one cares about the political opinions of egomanical celebrities. They are performing monkeys who are paid to come out of their cages and (hopefully) entertain us, then its back in the cage you go.

  35. Christina X says:

You know, I’m all for celebrities shutting the hell up as far as trying to guilt trip people into voting.

“Rock the vote = vote for Obama, and be cool like us!”

Am I excited Obama won? Yes.

But unfortunately these celebrity endorsements are garbage because they encourage people to vote for all the wrong reasons, that being that “the beautiful people” voted for him. For as many of these celebrity campaign ads I’ve been seeing over the past several months, I’ve yet to see a single one providing adequate reasons to vote for someone other than “IF YOU DON’T VOTE, HAYDEN PANTYHAIRS WILL THINK YOU’RE LAME!” That’s my problem with celebrity endorsements.

    I digress.

But in all fairness, I don’t think Carrie Underwood should talk. I go on Deceiver regularly, and wonder why it’s acceptable for her to openly support animal rights and express her moral/political views as an animal rights advocate but not for other celebrities to openly support Barack Obama.

She needs to back down, and she’s been trying wayyy too hard recently. She needs to get off her soapbox, because all I ever hear her talk about is negativity. I understand trying to break away from the Idol image, but this is the most predictable, fake, and trite way of doing so. What she sounds like is a brat.

  36. Mika says:

I think whether your a celebrity or not you have the right to back whomever you want, out loud or in private. If a person chooses a candidate because of what a ‘celeb’ says then it’s their parents fault for not teaching them to have their OWN mind, it’s their fault for always wanting to fit in. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, like Ms. Underwood is entitled to hers, if that’s how she feels then hey thats on her. I’m more than sure the millions of people that voted for Obama or McCain or the celebrities she’s lost respect for will even think twice about her or lose any sleep. I feel no pity for simple people who let others influence them, quit being a follower and learn how to lead.

  37. Mika says:

But just to piss people off, let’s see if I’m abusing my power as an American citizen:

    I’m BLACK and I’m proud!
    I’m AMERICAN and I’m proud!
My best friend in life is WHITE and I love her to death and I’m proud!
OMG! I have other friends who are puerto rican, native american, hindu, black, white, Asian, polynesian(say it ain’t so!) and I’m damn PROUD!
I voted for OBAMA and I’m proud!

All of those things were MY choice, no one swayed me one way or another, all of us family and friends (yes i have black family that voted for McCain, and I RESPECT their opinion) had our opinions but we RESPECTED each other and our opinions. Also and get this hold on to your seats now, I don’t consider myself a republican or a democrat because to me political parties are nothing more than organized gangs that keep our country separated, if your a republican you ‘can’t’ agree with a dem, if your a dem, you ‘can’t’ agree with a republican, it’s stupid. I happened to agree with a lot of things BOTH candidates said, I just happened to agree with OBAMA more.
I LOVE AMERICA AND MY FELLOW AMERICANS, TOGETHER WE STAND! HOLLA BACK Y’ALL! LOVE YOU!!!
