Carey Mulligan’s red, tulip-y Roland Mouret dress in London: lovely or fug?

These are photos from last night’s London Critics Circle Awards, obviously held in London. Shame was nominated for several awards, and as such, both of the stars came out to support their film – Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan even got all dressed up for the occasion. I know I focus on Fassy a lot (with good reason, he’s trying to lure me into his sweetshop-wrecking minimalist bed), but I also enjoy Carey a great deal, and I’m hoping that she ends up with an Oscar nomination for her work in Shame too. She was nominated for an Oscar for her very first lead role (An Education), so I think the Academy is already primed to like her.

Last night, Carey’s dress was this odd/lovely tulip-themed Roland Mouret. I think it’s a great choice for critics’ awards show, which often have a “business/cocktail” dress code. This Mouret isn’t too dressy, but it’s still eye-catching, feminine and beautiful. I think I might dislike it on another girl, but Carey pulls it off. PS… Her shoes are YSL. Another great pop of color.

And here’s Fassy – I believe we’ve seen him in this suit before. After yesterday’s shirtless festivities (in two posts, no less), I’m not really feeling it. I mean, the face is still beautiful, but I’d like to see this poorly-tailored suit on the ground. In my bedroom.

Carey’s dress would look better if it was shorter. But I still like it.

    Fass’ suit is awful.

Lovely dress. I don’t care for the shoes, they are too high and clunky for the dress.

  4. Carey Mulligan reminds me of a young Ellen Barkin. Her face is kind of lop sided, but she is interesting. Like the dress I guess, don’t really understand the shoes.

Terrible dress. I don’t know what’s worse: the padded shoulders, the black neck thingy, the bouffant waist, the tulipy pattern, the overall ill-fit, or the violet shoes with it?
    Carnival is not until February!

The shoes make her look like a clown,
    the dress is nice though!

I think the black parts in the dress should be white, and I don’t like the shoes with it, but it’s otherwise fantastically 1940′s. I could see Joan Crawford or Lauren Bacall in it, easy. Very nice.

Would anyone else here wear those shoes with that dress? I am just curious because as much as I love a “pop of color” I’d feel self-concious and color blind to put these shoes with this dress. Yes, I know it is fashionable for celebrities but do any of you do it?

Really like the dress. The calf-length is very in right now.

But I think there’s enough going on here on top that she didn’t need the clunky blue shoes. I would have paired it with something sleeker and more sober.

Not feeling the dress. Maybe without the white tulip cut-outs? And the black necklace/choker (?)? I love the shoes, though!

I like the dress a lot but agree with others about the black piece and the shoes. I really like Carey Mulligan. I hope she gets recognition for Shame.

Like the dress, disliked on her. As often happens with Carey, is way tooo mature for her. Who is her stylist, a middle age woman? That dress would good on Cate Blanchettm say, or GREAT on Helen Mirren ,not on a so young lady like her. SHe really needs a new stylist.

Nice shoes, but totallt off with that dress.

Would it kill her to stop making that face and smile?

she always looks like she’s doing this smirk thing on carpets and such. It’s so annoying.

Totally fug ~ that dress is wearing her. The shoes are ridiculous.

IMO, a young girl like that should wear something fun and bright. The dress isn’t absolutely hideous, it just ages her. Maybe a short, fitted peach dress would look great with her complexion. And if she wore that, she can play up her makeup and even curl her hair in soft waves. Love the shoes, though. As for Michael, he looks delicious in anything. The suit just needed to be fitted to that hot body ;)

I adore Carey Mulligan. Not digging the shoes at all for the color or the style, but she looks very nice. Cleveland Girl – you are totally right about the Ellen Barkin comparison!!

I hope she gets nominated, and I hope she brings Marcus Mumford with her to the show. Mmmmmmm Marcus

Actually quite a lovely, interesting dress, not your typical starlet attire at all – but those blue shoes have to go.

dress is adorable, but too big on her. yellow shoes would be my pick though, not blue!

Lets be honest, she’s never going to look good in anything because she has the face of an old, plain woman. She looks like Vicki Lawrence on Momma’s Family, old but with a strangely unlined face. I don’t know how else to explain her but she is NOT attractive. I do like the dress, hate the neckline though.
