Taylor Swift in gold Zuhair Murad at the Grammys: improving or busted?

Well, I guess we have to give Taylor Swift some credit. I feel like she’s been listening to some of our style criticisms of her, and this is how she answered. Swifty did not wear a prom dress, nor a wedding dress, nor something that made me think “how virginal.” Her Grammy dress was not a pastel. It was not white. It was not made of lace (sort of). It was not “precious”. Now, was this Zuhair Murad gown GOOD? Not really. I like the idea of Swifty graduating to metallics, but this feels like the busted cousin of one of her usual sparkly, lacy prom dresses. The effect with the sheer fabric on her chest is especially bad! That being said, I’m okay with everything from the waist down. The bottom of the dress is interesting.

Oh, and I really, really dislike Swifty’s hair here, but once again, I think I have to give her credit for changing it up. She didn’t do a curly frizz, she didn’t do giant bangs, she didn’t do sleek. She went for a simply, uncomplicated bun – but it just doesn’t suit her face. She looks particularly crazy-eyed this way. As for Swifty’s performance of “Mean”… I found it boring. That “country” stuff seems like a shtick for her at this point.

It struck me as I was watching the first hour of the Grammys – how perfect would it be if Swifty (the tall girl) ended up with Bruno Mars (the short guy)? Think about it – they would be super-cute together!!!!!! I can’t help it, I think Bruno is adorable, and I hope he got even more fans last night with his performance. I want him with Swifty.

It is kind of “virginal”. And it’s beige, something she often does, and it’s fug, something she ALWAYS does. So it’s not an improvement.

  2. Cherry says:

I think this dress is amazingly beautiful and she’s a pretty girl, but it takes a whole lotta woman to pull it off. This is a dress wearing a girl, not the other way around. Also, her make-up and hair look stiff and way too grown-up for someone so young.

    • lw says:

      Totally agree.

    • Tapioca says:

Yup, a good effort, but that dress needs a glacial, unsmiling Nicole Kidman in it!

I do like Taylor Swift. Don’t listen to her music an awful lot, but it doesn’t hurt to have an antidote to all the glorified strippers that pass for pop stars these days.

Wow, I sound old. Get off my lawn!!

      • bros says:

yah she looks like ballet practice or skating rink princess to me. also her song was SO stupid. it was a 16 year old’s diary. “why are you so mean? you say I cant sing and one day I’ll be singing this at the grammy’s” SO LAME. compare her songs and voice at 22 to Adel at 23. a world of songwriting maturity and vocal ability difference.

  3. Cleveland Girl says:

Bruno was the best act of the night last night!

    • Zozo says:

I wholeheartedly agree! I was not even a fan of his, but last nights performance was reminiscent of Elvis or James Brown!

    • LeManda says:

I agree!! I’m in love with Bruno’s showmanship!

Taylor’s song was lame. No other adjective to use.

  4. Katie says:

I think she’s definitely trying here and when I showed my husband a picture of her from last night he said, “wow, I actually find her more attractive now.” And I found myself smiling through her whole Grammy performance. It was unique and fun and she rocked the banjo. I was proud of her all around last night. You’re being super critical.

  5. Marianne says:

I really liked Taylor’s dress. I agree…didn’t really like the hair. I liked it better after the performance with the bangs in front.

As for Bruno, not only is he one of my faves but I loved when he told everyone to get off their rich asses lol.

  6. Len says:

I’m just happy she did something different with her hair. That curly thing on her forehead was annoying me.

  7. s says:

    Bruno ROCKS!!!! Love u baby!!!

  8. Asli says:

LOL – at Bruno for making everyone get up by telling them to get of their rich asses. Funny guy. Swifty… sucked. That wasn’t singing, that sounded like a cold paired with a cat in a dumpster. And her face after the performance. Ugh. Spare me. She’s 23! Why is she acting like a tween, her lyrics were so bad for Mean. Damn.

    • INeedANap says:

      THANK YOU!!
Her dumbass face when people clapped, like she was OH SO SHOCKED that they cheered for her…she doesn’t fake sincerity well. I wonder how much longer we have to put up with this manipulative semi-woman and her weak-ass voice…

      • InVain says:

        DITTO on this!

      • ahoyhoy says:

TOTALLY! I lol’ed at her ‘surprise’ face.

That was the first TS song I had ever heard, and those people who complain that her songs are juvenile are RIGHT!

Which two-week relationship did she write ‘Mean’ about? “You’re a liar! And pathetic!”
“And someday I’ll be singing this song at the Grammys”.
UGH. I needed an insulin shot after that.

      • PleaseICU says:

        @ahoyhoy–

Swifty’s song wasn’t actually about one of her bearding/PR fauxmances for once. I read on another site that “Mean” was her response to the media/music critics who, like, actually, like, critique her songs/albums.

I guess they’re big ole meanies for…doing their job. Since that job apparently doesn’t always involve blind devotion and kissing her behind no matter what she puts out they’ve now joined the ranks of every other person that’s ever done her wrong (in her opinion).

They get a song devoted to calling them out and slapping them with some unflattering label. All of course, while she casts herself, once again, as a victim. They’re just a bunch of meanies. And she’ll show them!

  9. helvetica says:

It’s pretty but just okay, nothing special here.

  10. brin says:

    Love Bruno Mars!

  11. Jaye says:

I didn’t love the dress, but I actually liked her performance. I kind of get why people on this site go hard about her fashion choices and her wide eyed “oh gosh” schtick, but I do think the girl is talented.

  12. Bubbling says:

I never really realized how skinny she is! Dress is gorg. She has natural evil face, or is that just me?

    • Jean2 says:

      It’s the eyes, right?

“I’m going to blow up this auditorium tonight if I don’t win.”

    • cmc says:

She really is so thin! In a gorgeous, statuesque way. She makes me think of a young Nicole Kidman- whom, actually, this dress might have looked better on.

  13. normades says:

Is it just me or does it look like the short guy has a huge peen in those pants?

    • T.C. says:

LOL. I totally noticed! Don’t overlook the short guy ladies. Bruno is very cute too. Swifty looks pretty but I’m not into the dress. I give her credit for effort though.

  14. Dawn says:

Does he have socks on in that last pic?

    • Mojoman says:

Dawn, no I think his socks are in his pants! LOL. Good lawd, are my eyes deceiving me or is Bruno packed? Joking aside, his performance ROCKED! Love the motown ensemble.

  15. Franny says:

I loved Bruno’s performance so much yesterday that I downloaded that song. I’m glad to see someone actually singing with a band and vintage moves.

As for Taylor, I have grown to like her a bit more, but there is something that still bugs. I was watching the Grammys with my friend who is obsessed with her. I was gushing about Adele (whom I love and adore probably as much, if not more, than my friend loves Taylor) and her boyfriend was trying to make the arguement that Taylor and Adele are very similar because they are both young, rose the fame quick, and use relationships as song material.

Except Taylor sings songs along the lines of “you said I can’t sing, so you are mean, and will live in honkydonk no where forever! haha” and Adele sings songs that touch your heart. I understand why Taylor is popular, but I don’t believe she can be in any way compared to Adele. Adele isn’t an act. She doesn’t wear costumes, she doesn’t flaunt relationships where they wear knitted sweaters and drink hot chocolate. Her music means something more than that.

    /end rant.

    • Lola says:

They both do sing songs about relationships. Except Adele has depth and complexity and Taylor’s songs are shallow and naive.

      • ahoyhoy says:

        YES! See my comment above.
Can you imagine Adele singing something so simplistic and heavy-handed like ‘Why’d you have to be so mean?’

Adele just writes at such a higher level.

  16. lisa says:

I loved this dress. It was the best of the night for me. I also loved that her hair was off her face.

  17. CTgirl says:

I’m just glad she changed that awful hair. The little girl waves/curls are not flattering on her.

  18. islandgirl says:

I love Taylor. She looks great

  19. Scout says:

I love this dress but do agree that she is a bit young for the style – at least by today’s standards. I also was really over the old curly hair thing. Perhaps this is a bit austere but with a dress like this, I think everything else, including hair, has to be very simple.

  20. dena says:

She looks gorgeous, for sure, but the look is very stiff-Nicole-Kidman. That isn’t doing a 20 year old girl any favours.

  21. Julie says:

I don’t care for her good girl, saintly look. Like her hair down and straightened. More grown up.

  22. Lisa says:

Bruno’s performance AND pompadour hair was EPIC!!! I immediately thought of Jackie Wilson when I saw him…NEVA A BAD THING!!!

    • T.C. says:

He used to do an Elvis impressination act when he was 4 years old. He is actually in a movie doing an evis routine.

  23. Lane says:

Is there something she does well, according to you? get a life, people.

  24. Elizabeth says:

Taylor should have someone else do her eye makeup – too much mascara, too much eyeliner. That stayed the same.

  25. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Woah. Have never considered a Bruno-Swifty match-up. How interesting that would be; he seems sensitive enough for her needing.

Thought the dress was great. I like that she is starting to branch out.

  26. Heather says:

Oh my Lord, Taylor’s performance last night was just the worst … tacky set, so low classy, and what a puerile song.

  27. phlyfiremama says:

Did anyone else catch that she was “instrument synching” the banjo? Bwahahaha…:)

  28. bot says:

Poor girl cannot catch a break on her hair – you don’t like it down and straight, down and curly, with bangs, or pulled up in a bun. What options remain here?

Disclaimer: I really like Taylor and her age-appropriate, self-written lyrics.

  29. Rita says:

After a quick scan of the threads on the front page Taylor caught my eye and she looks incredible in that dress. If she’s moving her game in this direction, it’s defintely the right move. She’s maturing and looking fab.

  30. Ana says:

Taylor’s dress was amazing, but I find it too mature for her age, it would look better on an older woman.

Am I imagining things or was she pissed when she lost the Best Country Album award to Lady Antebellum? When they announced the winner I was looking at her and I swear I could see the anger in her face, like a “if looks could kill” with her eyes.

    • aprayerforthewildatheart says:

Maybe she was thinking about Jake Gyllenhaall, and their three month “romance”. Damn you Jake, I just can’t quite you, it’s all your fault, and your little dog too! XD

  31. Uh, No says:

I have heard other sites speculate that Bruno is gay. That would just lock Swifty into another beard sitch which I don’t think she’s wanting again!

  32. Quest says:

I love Bruno but he needs to wear socks, loving everything else

  33. Kim says:

I think she looks gorgeous and the dress isnt my favorite but it looks great on her. Very hard style to wear – have to be very thin and very tall.

  34. samira677 says:

I like the dress but she couldnt pull it off. Nicole kidman would have rocked it.

  35. aprayerforthewildatheart says:

I could totally see Kidman in this dress. I love the shoes. Her hair looks like fallback position, safe mode. I could picture soft falling waves below shoulder length. Still looks as if Joan Crawford’s daughter got into her closet and played dress-up. I do like that she never looks trashy.

  36. danielle says:

I like the dress and the hair – nice change to a more grown up style!

  37. ginger says:

LOL @ the thought of Taylor + Bruno together. She would tower over him.

  38. Amy says:

I like it. It looks like something Nicole Kidman might wear (or might’ve worn in the 90s). And I don’t mean that as a slight!

edit: Aaaannd…then I read the comments after I post.

  39. Jenna says:

Can’t do curls, can’t do sleek, now she can’t do a bun. Wow, Taylor can’t do anything, now, except shave her head.

As for the song, I agree with Katie. Taylor rocked that banjo, and I found myself enjoying her performance. I’d never even heard her before. Not only was she NOT boring, but it was also fun speculating about the subject…

  40. I totally covet a six string banjo.

  41. Lisa B. says:

It was good to see Taylor wearing something more grown up and less princess-like, but this dress wasn’t a very wise choice.

Maybe it’s just me but I think the hair and the neckline of the dress made her head look HUGE like a lollipop, haha.

Her performance was so boring. It failed to warm people up. The audience looked less than thrilled. Her dress and hair were so unfortunate there too.

Bruno, on the other hand, was AMAZING last night. He’s one of the few new artists I enjoy. He sings beautifully and he’s a wonderful live performer. A true showman in the making.

Uh, I wouldn’t like him and Taylor to hook up. She’s too vanilla for him. And that wouldn’t last, considering his large female fan base. Soon he would dump her and then we’d have one more song about this mean guy making the princess cry, 😉
