Gwyneth Paltrow in white Tom Ford, with a cape: busted superhero or lovely?

I cannot stress this enough: Gwyneth Paltrow came to the Oscars wearing a CAPE. “Goop” isn’t just her nickname and her specially-made newsletter for peasants – it’s also her superhero name. Dame Goop, with a cape! So here is Gwyneth in Tom Ford – this is from the same line of beautifully-made cream-white designs that Lindsay Lohan has been wearing, y’all. Gwyneth wasn’t nominated – she was only there to present (with Robert Downey Jr.) and to party. She didn’t change clothes for the Vanity Fair party, she merely lost the cape. Also – she went on stage to present without the cape too. And I really disliked her bit with RDJ – it was cheesy. I get that they’re friends, but their “banter” needed more work.

As for the wisdom of wearing an actual cape… I don’t know. My first reaction upon seeing her on the red carpet was that Goop looked like a vestal virgin, a high priestess of some sort. I ended up liking the structure of the “cape” – it seemed more like a smartly-draped coat, really. As for the dress – it was kind of meh. On Goop. The dress would have made a smart, minimalist wedding gown, truly.

My biggest complaints about Goop were her hair and makeup. I’m trying to get a shot of the back of her hair, just so you can see the effect of that low ponytail – it really looks like she just pulled it back with a rubber band. Trashy!!! And while I’m happy that Goop finally got her roots done, she needs to lowlights or something so she won’t look so washed out. And CB noted – “She still doesn’t know how to do her makeup!” Her makeup really did look like hell last night – and Gwyneth PAYS people to do her makeup.

BUSTED. and what’s with the cape, for god’s sake? oh, goop.

  2. mia girl says:

I’m no GOOP fan, but I think she pulled it off. I really liked her dress, the fit was great… And I liked her hair as well.

    • Lenore says:

Agreed. I have to admit I have a weird affection for her, since she manages to try so hard and fall so flat all the time; it’s just endearing.

But I like the dress, like her simple makeup, and as for the hair – well, I thought it was a nice fresh bob cut from the front. Shame it wasn’t, but let’s pretend.

    • HoustonGrl says:

Same here! I actually love this dress, it is so sleek and elegant. She pulls it off.

    • Raven says:

She was absolutely gorgeous in this dress and cape. It was perfect.

      • Fran says:

Have to agree, she looked great! Loved everything, maybe except the cape.

      • Tiffany says:

I totally agree! Loved this look. Best of the night for me.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

I hate to agree. I usually hate the Goop, BUT this dress is perfection and her body is really made to wear clothes. Like Cameron, they are model hanger types that look great in clothes like Giselle.

The cape I actually love. I think it looks like the most beautiful, elegant coat that is amazing-a coat on oscar night? Very cool. I missed the show, have to watch the fashion special tonight for that. Her hair? They could have at least wrapped the pony with hair. You can see the elastic! Love her shoes and jewels as well. Grudging I give it up for the goopster.

    • Koolkitty says:

I agree, I thought she looked fresh, different, and classy. I think I’m just tired of ill fitting strapless or ill fitting billowing sleeves that were everywhere last night. This was like a breath of fresh air by comparison. And the shoes, LOVE!!

    • Amy says:

I like it, too, and I don’t think her makeup is so bad either. It just looks a little “day” for a red carpet event. I think her hair looks fine, but that really does look like your standard rubber band.

      • wenderwoman says:

I like it on her as well. I don’t mind the hair or make-up either. I think she looks very pretty.

      • blouson says:

Can I join in? I think she looked incredible. She was like a modern corporate Glinda the Good Witch of the North and Jolie the trashy vixen Wicked Witch of the West. Yin and Yang.

  3. Carobell says:

I actually really like it! The ponytail not so much but the dress was super simple, tailored to fit her, and wasn’t super short or vulgar. I thought the cape was part of the dress at first though. It was a way to make a simple dress into an interesting look without beading or unnecessary detail.

  4. Frayed_Edges says:

Not a fan of the cap, but like the dress. The hair would have worked if she’d used a nicer hair band. I also like her makeup.

  5. Luise says:

Loved the dress but was appalled with the rubber banded pony tail. She could have used much larger earrings.

  6. I.want.shoes says:

The cape is ridiculous but once it’s gone, the dress isn’t that bad. It does look bridal, but the fit and tailoring is perfect on SuperGoop.

  7. Cherry says:

I think she looked lovely. So simple and elegant, and she truly has the body to rock such a sober dress. (Although a bra would have been a good idea.) I like it that she did’t feel like showing a lot of leg and/or cleavage, too. And hello, the shoes! Are those… gold? And GLITTERY? LIKE.

    • Kara Ann says:

I agree with you. I thought the minimalism is what made the whole thing work! The lack of “fussiness” is what made the look seem like a bold statement. The statement said I don’t need tons of bling, lots of flesh because my bad self can rock this dress…oh, and I think I’ll wear a cape…well!
BTW, can’t really stand Goop but good look, I think.

    • DrM says:

I don’t like the dress, the hair, or her makeup but like you Cherry I COVET her damn shoes…those are SO nice!

  8. LadyJane says:

One of the best of the night. She looks natural and relaxed and glowing and fresh. And I am not normally a fan, but she got it perfect here, like it or not.

  9. atlantapug says:

Ewww. Only Larry David can pull off the cape.

No, just no. So self-important. “Oooh, I’ll wear a cape! So avant-gard”.

And her hair is too severe.

  10. Lithe says:

    Exquisite

  11. betteboo says:

    seriously good shoes SuperGoop

  12. Lizzy says:

    Oh. God. No.

I was down with the cape, but I didn’t realize those shoulder pads were part of the dress, not the cape. Who puts shoulder pads in princess cap sleeves? WHO DOES THAT?

I almost liked something Goop wore. ALMOST.

  13. Wendy says:

She looks classy and elegant. It’s nice to see an actress who isn’t flashing her cleavage or hoochy on the RC.

  14. paola says:

Not in a millior years i would imagined i was ever going to say this..but i loved her dress! and the golden shoes! but i agree on the hair, total mess, but she brought a nice smile with her so at the end she was really pretty. she had no jewels but i LOVED that stunningly gorgeous diamond cuff. and honestly she couldn’t have possibly looked anything worse than that pink ralph Lauren she wore the year she won the oscar, that was in my opinion the worste ensemble in the whole 84 years of the academy awards ceremony.

    • Aiobhan says:

I know right! I agree with everything you wrote. For me Gywn is sort of meh with a shot of beige flavored organic no calorie milk. But she looks great here. One of my favs of the night. I like capes and I like this look. Her makeup
(or lack there of) is wrong and her hair looks budget, but overall she looks great. I like the photos of her smiling the best.

  15. jinni says:

I think it looks nice on her and at least it was interesting. This outfit looks like something Emma Frost from the X-men would wear, especially the cape. With her icy blonde attitude she’d make a good Emma Frost.

  16. Zimmer says:

Everything looked great, but the hair. Seriously isn’t that an “I’m bumming around the house” look? That’s what I do with my hair if I’m cooking and don’t want any hair in the food. She probably was fixing some kind of super-colon gunk and was too rushed to fix her hair before she left…..

  17. Rhiley says:

The problem with the hair is that it makes her ears look huge. Who knew Goopy has ears of corn.

  18. Rachel says:

I can not stress enough how much I hate GOOP.
That being said, the bitch looked good.
She was one of the best dressed at this years Oscars, although the bar was pretty low.

  19. Leigh says:

ok i love this dress, it works for her. but that hair…..

  20. bea says:

I’d bet money she has an eating disorder. When she was doing her “comedy” with RDJ, there was some close-up shots and she looked rough.

    • Granger says:

I was shocked at how bad her skin looked in the stage close-ups. For someone who spends so much time and money on herself — and who’s apparently on some kind of cleanse as we speak — her complexion is awful.

  21. Seagulls says:

I loved that dress, and I loved the cape. Her makeup isn’t to my taste, but I think she’s going for the East coast, old money prep look (see the Daily Prep blog for further examples of this image).

  22. BK says:

Looks better without the cape. Not a terrible look, just not outstanding.

I do like that she didn’t do anything to enhance her chest – pushups, etc. She has a nice, natural look, if a bit thin.

  23. Jayna says:

Gwyneth was a vision. She was one of the top ten on the red carpet and presenting. Her legs are worthy of a split, unlike Angelina’s.

  24. MissM says:

Tom Ford should have NEVER left Gucci… for me he represented the Golden Era of Gucci dresses… now he makes dresses like this one…WTF????

  25. jferber says:

SOrry, but her face is moving in really awkward ways, as if the skin doesn’t know where to go anymore now that Botox has blocked off familiar routes. Especially when she’s laughing you can see this. Also, she’s really gone the Aryan route with her plastic surgery, like so many other stars (Madonna, Beyonce). She looks so different than she used to look.

    • poppy says:

      ita
she’s sporting the botox bunny-ears on her nose even though she swears she would NEVER touch botox! too white trash for her majesty.

  26. lulu says:

Love it. Classy and original. Everyone is talking about it. I think she really has the figure to dress for the red carpet in this manner.

    • Monique says:

In fairness, my nose does that and I’m 25 and completely botox-free. So all bunny eared noses are not equal. (A flu shot is my personal version of hell – why do that voluntarily? To your face?!)

  27. garvels says:

I never cared for this spoiled brat who had her career handed to her on a silver platter. She is just another child of Hollywood who walks the earth thinking she is the chosen one.

Needless to say,I almost gagged when I saw the pretentious goop in this get up. Why doesn’t she just stay in England and raise her children and write her lame newsletter.

  28. annaloo. says:

SUPERGOOP!! The queen of clean, green, mean and spleens

    • Original Chloe says:

      It’s a bird.. it’s a plane.. no, it’s Supergoop!

(I agree she looks pretty – like a very pretty caped avenger, that is)

  29. Rachel says:

Gorgeous! Love the dress/cape and I actually quite like the makeup. That white diamond cuff is simply to die for!

    • Jenna says:

I agree, the dress and cape were lovely. The cape was a little bit of a risk, but I admire that she took one, and I think it paid off. I didn’t love her hair, but I’m so sick of the flatironed stringy look she usually wears, that even this was an improvement.

  30. G says:

    Lurv the dress, hard.

  31. Dibba says:

Goopy can look so lovely. Didn’t last night.

  32. Esmom says:

I get the “high priestess” vibe, too, it was like she was making a statement that she’s A-list and established, one of H-wood’s elite. She looked better, more relaxed, without the cape.

And I though she did fine with RDJ, she made the best of the stupid, cheesy material they were given.

  33. JudyK says:

HATE her, LOVE the dress w/ or w/o the cape. Also LOVE the cuff bracelet–she’s understated and elegant.

She and Angelina get my nod for best dressed of the night.

  34. nellie says:

She looked great, not a fan of hers but she was one of the best dressed of the night.

  35. juju says:

Best dressed last nite, dress with cape was beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Susan says:

Aging beautifully! She looked so good. I am so proud of a woman when she ages and does it in this way. Good for her. A rare find in hollywood.

  37. normades says:

I thought it was fashion forward and ellegant.

  38. Anastasia says:

The dress itself is pretty, but the Kotex shaped shoulder pads were AWFUL.

And the hair!!! A loose chignon would have been gorgeous! But no.

And agreed on her skin. The up close shots on stage were ROUGH.

  39. lucy2 says:

The hair is bad and the cape is ridiculous (look at ME! look at ME!) but the dress itself isn’t bad at all.

  40. Marianne says:

I kind of liked the cape.It was different and she took a risk. I think if anyone can pull it off it’s Gwyneth.

Dress was stunning without the cape too.

  41. ladybert62 says:

Dress looks better with the cape – her hair and makeup and jewelry were awful.

  42. Joey says:

I thought she looked great and I loved the dress cape and all. I really liked that she took the cape off after the red carpet. The only thing I think she should have done was worn something on that ponytail other than a rubber band or whatever that is. Other than that everything worked.

  43. Mia says:

    I loved this look!

  44. jamminatorr says:

She looks OK. Dress was nice but her hair looks crunchy and thinning and her face looked… rough last night.

  45. Ravensdaughter says:

She looked great! And her patience with Robert Downey=I know it was schtick, but I still would have felt like slapping him.
I definitely think white/off white works very well for her.
Also, the dress is light years ahead of the poorly fitted “Pepto-Bismo”l dress of years ago-wasn’t that Calvin Klein?
    Wow-that is a rubber band!

    • Raven says:

I really like RDJ, but he was getting on my nerves last night and I didn’t have to deal with him. She was a good sport about his nonsense.

  46. Shelly says:

I like the cape on her. She looked great!

  47. Asli says:

She wore A CAPE! She was probably off to save a village after the Oscars and the cape was her mark, so they could see she was coming whilst she was flying across seas. Good on you, Goop.

  48. Linda says:

I just wonder how you party in a white dress.

  49. Alyce says:

I’m not a Gwen fan but she looked really good! Best I’ve ever seen her!

  50. Julie says:

I thought she looked lovely. I did think she need at least some earrings though.

  51. Jill says:

It looked better with the cape. The shoulder pads threw the whole thing off.

  52. tracking says:

Lovely in still photos but not especially flattering (looked a little spanxy) in motion. Agree that bolder earrings and makeup would have made pop a bit more.

  53. Sumodo1 says:

    She’s still acting? (hahahaha!)

  54. Everlyo says:

The dress alone sans cape was great. The hair was a disaster. Why was she wearing only 1 tiny earring on her left ear? I was more interested in her being in such close proximity to both JLo & Angie, both looked so much better than her. Poor Goop.

  55. Scarlet Vixen says:

When I first saw the cape I kinda groaned–and I’m a Gwyneth fan. But after looking at it awhile I thought it was very understated and elegant. It was pretty chilly in L.A. last night, too. I’ll take Goop in a cape over Rooney Mara in a nightgown complaining about being cold any day.

  56. Petunia says:

I’m not usually a fan of Goopie’s look (drippy) but my goodness, she really pulled it off at the Oscars! Love the dress, love the cape, love the hair and makeup. She should do this more often!

  57. Bobby the K says:

Hey Goopie, Ovechkin called, he wants his shoulder pads back!

  58. GrahamFan says:

That cape is ridiculous. She looks like she came from Newt Gingrich’s moon base in all her glory to look down on all the peasants on earth.

  59. TheOriginalVictoria says:

    Brava, brava!

I love it. Only Goop could pull this look off. Wearing white before Memorial Day? That’s Gwyneth. And it wasn’t ecru, or eggshell, that bitch was white. How did she keep it clean all night?

  60. Dee Cee says:

Always alone.. saving herself.. because ew.. you are all.. so not Me..

  61. Reece says:

I think this is, if not my favorite then top5. I know, Goop, right? I only saw her presenting last night. So I only saw the dress and liked it but I didn’t see the cape. She pulls off the cape well.

I will say of all the white dresses last night this is the one I would actually wear as a wedding dress. Not that it’s looks bridal but that’s just my preference. Yes I would rock the cape.

  62. mazzy says:

Goodness, Goop annoys the crap outta me but I have to admit…
She looks incredible. Love the dress, w/ and w/out the cape. On my shortlist for best dressed.

  63. Kim says:

She is usually a miss and this to me was a big hit. I thought she looked stunning. Not many women can wear all white in that material and pull it off. She looked a tad to thin though.

  64. original kate says:

look, up in the sky –
    it’s a pretentious twit!
    it’s a poop obsessed actress!
    it’s super-goop!

  65. Cleo says:

Wow! That looks so good on her – like the reverse image of Raven in Teen Titans.

  66. I Choose Me says:

I thought she looked great, cape and all.

  67. I Choose Me says:

Huh, why am I on moderation?

  68. Me says:

    Stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. Deven says:

Despite what a lot of you are saying, I think Gwyneth looked remarkably elegant in that dress and cape that only she could wear. She stands so beautifully straight and looks so good in the ensemble, it appears he designed it for her only. I loved her subdued makeup (no big fat red lips!) and her hair was pretty and subtle. Even with her personality quirks, when it comes to dressing, she knows more than all the others combined!

  70. Camille (The original) says:

Beyond busted. GP has a very straight up and down body, and this dress highlights that in a very unflattering way. I don’t like any part of her look here at all.

  71. Annaloo says:

Is it me, or does she just look like a walking suppository?

  72. anonymoose says:

All I see are the stupid “horns” sticking out of her shoulders.

(and that she still needs to wear a bra to hoist those droopy goopy titties.)

Must she ALWAYS hook her hair behind her ears?!!!

At least she had her roots done and isn’t doing a middle part. Soooo sick of her straightened boring hair. Her natural wave would soften her look and downplay the dominant nose and angular jaw.

Dress looks better with the cape b/c it balances out the overall proportion.

  73. jojo says:

Does anyone know if goop and brangelina crossed paths. I so wished they had cut to brange’s face when the dame was on stage.

  74. MK Martin says:

Awesome. She looks great. That is her Best Hair.

  75. Sara says:

She looks beautiful and that dress looks amazing on her. Of course the cape thing is weird and silly but without it she looks gorgeous and youthful! I like the natural look; no need for blinding red lips to make you look pretty!

  76. Karen says:

She looked fantastic, she has a rockin’ body and totally pulled that look off. Her make-up was understated and i liked the cape- it added a bit of wackness to the evening. Go Goop!

  77. Newtsgal says:

If that dumbass SBC can dress-up as a dictator at the frickin Oscars, then I guess Goopy can have her cape.

  78. marie says:

I loved the outfit. I don’t care for Goop but I think she cared this dress well. It was different in a land of strapless or ruched gowns. She looked very simplistic and elegant

  79. Vera says:

I really liked it on the red carpet, but the little shoulder things are kinda meh. On camera it looked alright, as it was pretty straight on, but seeing her walk in it…not as good.

But her hair. Ugh. I wish she did something else. Could have been just as simple, but I hated the length of the ponytail.

  80. Emily says:

LOVE the cape. I’m really upset about the hair, I thought she’d cut it short again until I saw it from the sides. She used to look good with her short hair in the 90s, she should go back to that.

    • Fatkid says:

Me too! When I first saw her I thought “Yes! Finally she cut her hair short.”

She looks SO much better with short hair!

  81. beanie says:

I thought she looked wonderful. I actually did a double take to check to see if it was really her. LOL! I would have also done a bit larger stud earring and maybe lose the ring, but other than that, I think this one is a win.

  82. DeeVine says:

Dress, hair, make up…perfection. She stood out from the boring cookie cutter oscar gown crowd.

  83. ccoop says:

Kills me to say this, but she really did look beautiful. Wish she would get herself a REAL hairstyle though.

  84. hoganbcmj says:

She’s annoying in general but I have to admit she looks really good here.

  85. shanghaichicken says:

When she smiles you can tell the work she’s had done on her face. It looks so plastic and busted!

The dress, hair, make up were all epic fail. She could have made it work but looks likes she just felt like being lazy.

  86. Deloise says:

    She looked very sophisticated!

  87. Dee Cee says:

How everyone sees her.. tidy, rich.. know it all snob., comfortable, immaculate in white ‘don’t touch’ as appealing stale bread tho..

  88. Zoe says:

I liked her look a lot and she owned it. My favorite of the night. At least she dared to do something fashionable. This years dresses were boring with the exception of Michelle Willams, Jessica Chastain, and Gwenth.

  89. Ally says:

Let’s leave Aniston aside for a moment, and wonder how mortifying it is for Fishsticks to show up to this giant event unaccompanied, when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are doing their loved-up sex bomb act, and Goopy can’t even get her husband to hold her hand in public.

Shrivelly humiliation! Maybe that’s why her bit with RDJ was so middle school nervous.

  90. skuddles says:

I think the dress would have been great if there had just been one panel hanging off the shoulder, rather than the full cape effect.

  91. ManicPixieDreamGirl says:

She always looks stunning. And her shoe game is always on point. However, I CANNOT for the life of me understand that goop shit she does. Beyond pretentious!

  92. gobo says:

she looks really like Claire danes around the face here. and a touch forehead botoxy.

  93. My2Cents says:

I like the cape. It’s understated and stunning. I wonder how hard it was to keep it on?

  94. Sare says:

I think Cate Blanchett would be the only person to carry this dress off! She would have us raving about how gorgeous radiant and divine she looks for like the next 5 years. Where was she last night? *dying for new pictures of her*

  95. Sare says:

I think Cate Blanchett would be the only person to carry this dress off! She would have us raving about how gorgeous and divine she looked that night for like the next 5 years. Where was she!!

  96. anytime says:

i only like her shoes here.
