Gwyneth Paltrow is the new face of Lindex fashion: cheap, peasanty or cute?

Gwyneth Paltrow has been hired as the new face of Swedish fashion label Lindex for their Spring 2012 campaign titled “Modern Preppy.” Goop replaces Reese Witherspoon, who fronted the Autumn 2011 campaign that was presented as a highly affordable fashion line. Reese’s relatively down-to-earth vibe seemed to be a pretty good fit for Lindex, but fashion lines can be fickle and probably just wanted to move onto the next face. The real question is this — why has Goop signed onto promote a clothing line that presents itself as accessible to the unwashed (or even worse, uncleansed) masses?

Perhaps Gwyneth has fallen prey to the same erroneous train of thought — “those peasants will never find out” — that she fell prey to while shilling frozen, processed food for an Austrian grocery store. After all, Lindex is even more down-market than Goop’s Coach campaign, but Lindex is headquartered in Sweden, which is so far away from uncultured America, right? The strange thing though is that I feel like I’ve already seen Gwyneth in a few of these outfits, albeit much pricier versions. Like this one:

Goop has also starred in a little behind-the-scenes featurette to promote the new line. In addition to the visual delight of Goop working a series of pretentious poses, the video also treats us to her grating voice. She actually says, “Sexy cool or easy chic? What am I? I’m both.

When Lindex presents its new collection in the big spring campaign, its model will be the talented actor and fashion icon, Gwyneth Paltrow.

Lindex’s big spring campaign will feature a Modern Preppy look. The campaign was inspired by the sporty, relaxed lifestyle that is characteristic of USA’s East Coast gems, such as Long Island and the Hamptons, yet with a certain Scandinavian touch. The combination results in a fresh, new feeling.

“It’s simply great that Gwyneth Paltrow will be modelling the new collection. She is a fashion icon, synonymous with the Modern Preppy concept, which makes her perfect for this role. She also personifies the Lindex brand in an exceptional way because she is such a positive, warm and energetic person. We are overjoyed,” says Johan Hallin, Director Concept & Marketing at Lindex.

When Gwyneth isn’t wearing elegant gowns on the red carpet, her style preference is stripes and “casual chic”. The decision to use her as Lindex’s model was an easy one, since she is practically synonymous with the Modern Preppy look.

“I really love the clothes! I would never represent a brand that I wouldn’t wear myself. I love the top and shorts that I was photographed wearing, as well as the chinos and blazer. These are the kinds of clothes that I wear everyday. I also love stripes and I wear striped clothing practically all the time,” says Gwyneth Paltrow about the collection.

[From Lindex]

Okay, I will concede that Goop looks somewhat at home in these clothes, but there is no way in hell that she would have ever spontaneously recommended this line in her weekly newsletter unless it cost more than most families’ monthly gross income — because she inherently believes that a $400 t-shirt feels so much softer against the skin than a commonly affordable one. Still, a couple of these outfits don’t look bad, and Goop did okay here even if she’s wearing cheap (to her) clothing.

It’s a shame she’s such an ass because she can look so adorable.

    • carrie says:

i believe she’s honest as ass :she’s married with a famous pop star ,her friends are famous, she’s rich. She doesn’t try to do “i’m like you”

  2. DailyNightly says:

Do these idiot actresses really think the pidgeon toe look really works for them??
Gwynnie is pulling a Bosworth here.

    • Lis says:

I think it’s meant to be a gamine (ie, thin), newborn-fawn-learning-how-to-walk look.

Y’know, because her legs are just so, so thin. And she’s so young.

Yeah, I rolled my eyes at that, too. It’s not something able bodied grown women should do.

    • Leikyn says:

When I was learning to walk my mom said I was pigeon toed. Made me wear corrective shoes. How sad my mother isn’t blessed with the gift of foresight or I could have been a TRENDSETTER!

  3. Lis says:

Aside from Goop, what has GP been doing recently?

    Maybe she needs the money?

Heaven help me, I’d wear a lot of those clothes. Good call from Lindex.

    • Hautie says:

      “Maybe she needs the money?”

I have been saying this for months. That she has been hustling hard for cash for over a year now. And I wonder if her husband had cut off her allowance.

Or just forced her to get a job to pay for all the silly shit she wants. Like that out door pizza oven in her back yard. 🙂

      • lin234 says:

Didn’t she combine two London apartments or something on top of renovating the entire place to make it into a super-home? Everyone knows renovations is a never-ending money pit.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr Coldplay and her kept their bank accounts separate.

  4. carrie says:

it looks totally her own casual look in real life

  5. Jackie says:

    she is INSUFFERABLE.

that video! they need to cut down on the profile shots, given that beak she has.

also, the pretension is too much to take…the coffee in hand, being labelled a fashion icon, etc.

    double ugh.

  6. Esmom says:

I didn’t watch the video but the photos are cute. And they look WAY more natural/relaxed than Reese’s campaign, where they clearly had Photoshopped her head onto some tall, thin model’s body!

  7. Rachel says:

Goop looks great! I love the clothes as this is basically what I would wear on a daily basis.I may have to check Lindex out.The thing about Gwyneth is that she may prefer designer clothes but she can make even cheap clothes look expensive.

    • Trashaddict says:

She should hire the people who did this photo shoot. Best her hair’s looked in years, she’s actually smiling, and she doesn’t look all washed out. Would be interesting to see what other photo shoots they’ve done.

  8. spitfire says:

    Lindex sounds like bedlinen stuff.

And Goop Poop as always, looks blah! Now, let’s all flush her down the toilet in 3..2..1! Goop, I mean, good riddance!

  9. Elizabeth says:

I find her insufferable but I have to admit she looks cute in these clothes. I buy them (if I could afford them). Its not that she recommends “bad” stuff. It would be great to have all the stuff she recommends – its just that most people can’t afford it. And she acts like the “can’t afford” people don’t exist. She won’t acknowledge that she’s pimping a luxury lifestyle that’s a fantasy for most of us. But she looks cute in these pictures/clothes.

  10. Sapphire says:

I’ve seen her mom, Blythe Danner, in a couple things recently and she is prettier and more likeable than Goop. too bad when your mom is waaay cooler than you. And she’d look at least as good in these clothes.

    • Mimi says:

Wtf is that little head shaking thing she keeps doing in the vid clip… Is she trying to be coy? I had to replay to make sure I wasn’t imagining it, but it’s there and it’s horrible.

  11. lilyplashia says:

I’ve bought Lindex stuff in Scandinavia, and it’s generally quite cute stuff and pretty cheap in euro terms, but it doesn’t really last.

  12. Azurea says:

That press release is a little over-the-top breathless, isn’t it? They’re “overjoyed” to have her modelling for them? C’mon!!

  13. MitzieMartin says:

You would have thought she could have done a root touch up before the shoot!

  14. Franny says:

I love all of those clothes.

  15. poppy says:

so unbelievable she really means she’s going to actually, in her “real” life, wear this brand. she’ll wear pieces that are similar in style but certainly not lindex made pieces.
she will sell-do-say anything to stay relevant. ANYTHING.
why does she only have 3 poses? the slightly leaning forward-hand/s on thigh/s, the pulling up of the hem, and insufferable b*tch pose? at least she has learned to smile.
    can’t escape the GOOP!

  16. Mara says:

She looks very cute in the pictures ,very nice body.

  17. cerulean says:

Reminds me of Kookai. Europeans will know what I mean. Cute, trendy and not all that expensive. Though I think Kookai might be a bit more expensive.

  18. TheOriginalVictoria says:

Is Lindex like JCPenny’s Worthington collection? lol

  19. Dee Cee says:

It’s a friendly money/power struggle between them.. just because she can lend him some cash, ignore his sneaky cheats and take care of all their bills, dreamy-creative singer really needs her no fuss, no bother relationship..

    • Lexi says:

I don’t understand your suggestion that GP would “lend” CM money/cash. He is a gazillion times richer than she is. And when are money &/or power struggles ever “friendly”?
More importantly, why doesn’t he leave? Afraid she’ll take the kids back to the States?

  20. Liv says:

The striped top with the sequins is the same shirt that j crew put out a couple seasons ago.

    • ebraca says:

agreed. i work P-T for j.crew retail, a lot of the “mod-prep” stuff looks exactly like current j.crew and past j.crew (jenna years)… i’m curious about the quality to price of Lindex. There’s no US online shopping conversions so if you figure 1 euro is about 1.5 american dollars, the pricing is pretty good — like UNIQLO not terribly pricey, but not so cheap where I REALLY question the workmanship.

  21. Nev says:

    yawn.

  22. Kim says:

She needs to have her nose job updated. Its very 80’s & looks terrible.

    • scylla says:

wft? are you for real? people should STOP plastic surgery and not update or what… this is exactly the reason why so many woman feel they are not beautiful enough with their “normal” features!

  23. alex says:

I like it, although for her and others, not for me. That first photo though, with the speckles of whatever…idk why they did that to that poor striped shirt.

  24. Seagulls says:

    Gwyneth. Stop. Pointing. Your. Toes.

Well, everyone in Hollywood, I guess.

  25. Traxie says:

Am I the only person who thinks that in both the photos and video she just looks like your average tired mom whose concealer can’t quite cover up her exhaustion? She is looking so old.

And the outfits are mostly cute, but her hair is SO wrong for some of them. Long straight hair the colour and consistency of straw is not modern preppy, it’s not modern … anything. It’s just wrong.

  26. ViloDeMenus says:

Um, all but a couple of pieces, like the cable sweater, and possibly the sequin shell are just hideous. Horrible looking, horrible fitting, and if it doesn’t look good on her it’s not going to look good on anyone. Wow. Well everyone needs a paycheck, and I guess her good friend Valentino forgot to call.

  27. gg says:

She wouldn’t be caught dead wearing those horrible clothes! And I wouldn’t either!

  28. marie says:

I like the clothes and Goop wears clothes well.

  29. Jean2 says:

I wonder what she bathed in to get rid of the scent of affordably priced clothing?

  30. girl says:

the clothes are cheap and terrible, nough’ said.. it’s funny I mean how old is she?? what amazing roles has she had in her lifetime???its Hertime is OVER… its a bit sad really shes now “modeling” for “lindex” gwen lacks something like a giant box of marbles it suits her, really.

  31. MsMe says:

What a truly odd choice of ‘face’- Lindex is lightyears away from goopys $$$ seasonal wardrobes.
