Madonna claims (with English accent) she’s “survived with sanity & humor intact”

Madonna has a new interview! The complete thing airs tonight on Rock Center, but the Today Show had a preview this morning, and it’s pretty decent. Madonna answers questions about those recent photos of Lourdes puffing away on a cigarette – Madge says she “wasn’t very happy” about the photos: “Honestly, I don’t think I’m as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. It’s hard — every day is a negotiation. But cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of — for anyone.” When Madonna is reminded of the fact that she was smoking a cigarette in her latest “Girl Gone Wild” video, Madge joked that the cig was “just a prop.” She also talks about life as a single mother: “It must be hard, because I complain all the time! We all have our challenges… To be a single mother of four and to work as much as I do, with my life in a kind of metaphorical fish bowl, it’s pretty challenging. But so far I’ve survived with sanity and humor intact.” All in all, this is one of the better Madonna interviews:

I mean… at one point, I was rolling my eyes at her pretension and her “default” safe place of falling casually into a clipped English accent, but I also think she was pretty honest in this piece. I don’t know when this interview was conducted, but with the way Madge is all puffed up with her “number one debut” on the charts, it probably was done two weeks ago. Because MDNA bombed – big time – last week, and now everyone is saying that Madonna probably didn’t even reach number one on the charts because of her label’s sketchy math (they were giving the album away for free and counting those as “sales”). They reference that in the voiceover, but Madge doesn’t talk about it.

Oh, and are we going to talk about her face or how soft and Oprah-like the lighting was? No. Let’s skip it.

I’m not English but I live there and the Brits think her so-called English accent is ridiculous and doesn’t sound even remotely close to the real thing.

  2. lucy2 says:

Funny, she used to talk about how strict she was with her kids, and now she needs to be tougher?

Man, her face freaks me out. Dancing around to Borderline as a kid, I never would have expected her to do that to herself.

In all fairness, I’m a mom to three teenagers. What worked when they were say 5 does not work the same anymore. Sometimes you cannot tell a mini adult anything.

  3. Rhea says:

Why can’t she makes a song like the way she used to… more memorable…

  4. lady_luck says:

What do you think she has had done to her face recently? It has definitely been “softened” somehow. That woman has quite a few (no doubt very expensive) tricks up her sleeve.

  5. Jules says:

What a tiresome phoney twat. She has survived? Wow, her life has been so hard hasn’t it?

    • Seymour Butts says:

Well said! No doubt she’s survived by using a ton of facial filler. Gosh, can you imagine if she suffered a similar fate as Lara Flynn Boyle? Too many fillers eventually break down and your face ends up looking like melting dough, love it! Heheh.

    What Jules said.

At some points she goes from a flat out American accent to some sort of wannabe Kate Winslet stuff. It’s completely obnoxious. It’s like she forgets and goes, “Whoops! I forgot to put on my accent there for a minute!” I wonder if her kids find it obnoxious, too?

    • Jay says:

Why do people assume she’s doing the accent on purpose? I know many people who subconsciously adapt their accent depending on who they’re talking to. e.g. Speak with a Scottish accent to their Scottish parents and a neutral North American accent otherwise. Being a singer I expect she has a tendency to mimic, even if not well, and she may waver when switching. And I say this as someone who agrees that she’s otherwise acts like a pretentious fake that’s trying too hard to be modern.

  8. FeverDream says:

She is so fake. Her accents waiver in and out. I’ve literally never heard her do two interviews the same way.

  9. Elizabeth says:

I have some sympathy with the accent thing because I tend to absorb any accent I am exposed to (briefly anway). I also started to stutter after being around someone who did that too. But I think your basic accent stays the same – my parents are from UK and still sound like it although when they go to the UK, people say they don’t sound British anymore. Weird.

  10. Kimbob says:

Sorry…I’ve got to say it. She’s sooooo pretentious. She’s such an insufferable drama queen.

  11. ladybert62 says:

oh my heart bleeds for her – a working mother! NOT! Madonna, you have how many nannies in your employ? No sympathy here – just go away.

    • newhouf says:

Totally agree! I hate when really wealthy celebrities talk about being single parents or how hard parenthood is… they have a whole entourage they employ to take care of everything! Not the same for the rest of us! What a joke!

      • LMS says:

Yes, but it’s a real hardship *manage* all those nannies. Where’s your compassion for her plight???

  12. Eleonor says:

I can’t imagine what happened to Lola after Madge saw that photo.

  13. bored says:

I think she looks good. Better than she’s looked in a long time.

  14. catt says:

Her face looks softer because her fillers are absorbing. They last about 6 months unless its Radiesse which lasts longer but they all eventually absorb and disappear. If she doesn’t re-up her face will sag even more than it has already started to do.
I always was envious of Madonna’s meta-confidence but her aging has shown me how insecure she really is.
What kills me is how she said in that interview she still has ‘things to say’. Oh yeah? Like what? Like those awful tired nursery rhyme lyrics on her last few albums? Or maybe she means how profound and ground breaking her take on Wallis was (her film) Not.

  15. Jayna says:

Interestingly enough she gave an interview to a radio guy a month ago and she was so open and funny and chatty, the same with another radio interview, not guarded at all. I realized how she just stiffens up in front of the camera not just In acting but interviews also.

    • BabyCakes says:

She did a really relaxed interview with Rosie O’Donnell on the Arsenio Hall show in the 90’s

  16. Happy21 says:

She actually looks quite pretty in these photos, I think anyways. Her face doesn’t look so plastic. Still not her real one but not so bad.

Her accent makes me laugh. She sounds like one of those prep-school a-holes that sound English but aren’t because they are trying to sound better than everyone else. I worked for a guy like that who would sound like that from time to time.

I talk in accents all of the time. I love putting on accents. My girlfriend always has me do an English one because it reminds her of her nana. Its so sweet. I also do a wicked southern belle (lol, I’m canadian…).

  17. Moi says:

Oh Madge, you’ve gotten quite eccentric in your old age.

  18. Bobby the K says:

    What exactly has she survived?

She may have alot of things, but a sense of humour isn’t one of them. Part of her unappealing nature is that fact that she takes herself so seriously.

  19. d says:

I live in England. My boyfriend is English. Im surrounded by English people. Her accent isn’t English. I don’t hear it at all. She just sounds like an articulate American?

    • deehunny says:

that’s because you’re english. To an American you can hear the difference. For example, can you tell the difference between an American and Canadian accent? Probably not.

  20. Eener says:

The single mother comment Madonna made just shows exactly how out of touch she is with reality. What a sanctimonious, narcissistic beyotch. Please feck off.

  21. sup says:

her faux british accent is so annoying. mainly because it doesn’t deceive you, at all. she sucks at emulating whatever she thinks emulating. she changes her voice to a nice old english lady voice-when we all remember what she actually sounds like?? why does she even do this? why?? anybody know?

  22. kiyoshigirl says:

What bothered me more than the fake accent was the fact that she barely engaged in any straight on face, or God forbid eye, contact with Harry Smith. It was as if she was just sooooo bored and wanted to be done with it. He tried to cut through her BS, but she wouldn’t break!!!

Her face reminds me of my older sister who uses fillers and Botox so much that she no longer looks like her real self. That doesn’t matter to her though as long as she “looks young”. Believe me, my sister will tell you straight to your face that she looks young. Sometimes I want to laugh about it, but she’s 58 years old and she’s raising a 9 year-old son. It’s very important to her to look young, so I give it to her.

  23. sup says:

lol just as i was reading this old trick’s thread fnm’s midlife crisis came up… a song which was written about madonna… lol suits her even more perfectly now
