Eva Green: “I feel like the ugly duckling, like I’m from Venus or something”

Eva Green

Eva Green covers the June issue of InStyle magazine to promote her psychotically witchy role in Dark Shadows, and she looks amazingly beautiful as always. Again though, Eva’s talking about how inferior she feels in this world, and one gets a sense that she is indeed as insecure as she claims. Of course, it’s hard to believe that anyone who played Vesper Green is shy and socially awkward, but that’s Eva’s shtick, and she’s sticking with it. Perhaps she grew up being teased a lot for her offbeat looks, and this carried over to adulthood. Regardless of her neuroses’ origins, at least Eva’s standing up to being told to lose weight for The Dreamers, which was her first film and one in which she appeared unclothed for a substantial amount of on-screen time. Go Eva! Here are some excerpts:

Eva Green

On looks in Hollywood: “It’s not all about physique and how beautiful you look. In this business actors who have Botox or surgery make you very aware of age. It’s awful. In Los Angeles, I feel like the ugly duckling, like I’m from Venus or something.”

Women get the crappy roles: “It’s so boring to play the girlfriend. Most of the women in film are there to be beautiful to the man. It’s quite hard to find a ballsy or complex character. So the roles I’ve taken are those. Lot’s of people put me in the dark category.”

She won’t diet: “Before my first film, the casting director asked me to lose some weight, saying, ‘On screen you’re going to look much fatter. I started drinking soups and then I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I can’t go on a diet. It’s hell, it makes you very depressed – food is so important to me. I couldn’t go on.'”

As a long-time follower of Eva’s weirdness, I seem to recall that she has a habit of comparing things to Venus. Just last year at Sundance, she described Park City, Utah as follows: “It’s amazing. When you land, you look like you’re on Venus or something; it’s completely mad. It’s beautiful.” By her verbiage, can we infer that she does think that things “from Venus” (such as herself) truly are weirdly beautiful, or does she merely compare feeling alien to being from Venus? I’m overthinking this. All I know is that Eva is absolutely gorgeous and does great in roles where she plays the devastatingly hot freak. She may not get as much work as other actresses, but she’s clearly in a position to make these roles really count.

Now about this InStyle photoshoot. Eva looks perfectly lovely, and for the most part, she is styled quite well here. That cover though … is fug.

tisk, tisk, tisk…someone is fishing for compliments.

  2. paola says:

Good Lord i hate when beautiful women complain about how ugly they feel..nothing worse than pretending to be humble and normal from the cover of a magazine… geeesh..

    • alex says:

Agreed 1000%, its the most annoying and transparent comment….. along with the classic
“I became an actress/actor because I did theatre in 4th grade and I really wasn’t trying to be famous at all.”

    • Mrs.Robinson says:

AMEN So sick of hearing it.

    • Eleonor says:

AMEN!!Totally Co-sign! So tired of: “I’m a size zero, I was chosen as one of hottest women on earth, but you know I feel a mess, I feel soooo ugly” STFUP please.

  3. Maguita says:

I think Venus for her is Alien.

Honestly, she sounds a bit like a Wicca: You know, mother Earth, etc. and in this case, it could be alien Venus as opposed to planet Mars. Which makes her… Unique?

Yeah, she’s trying too hard to not look like the goddess she really is. I’d like her more if she embraces her physical beauty and rule Hollywood.

  4. Alexis says:

I enjoy Eva Green…but she won’t diet? I saw some pics of her recently looking pretty skeletal. A lot of stars like to talk a big game about how they don’t diet and want to reflect a realistic image but they end up as skinny as anything.

One think I’ll say for ScarJo (this is possibly the only really great thing to be said about her), she’s consistently rocked a within-the-realm-of-the-everyday kind of thin, as opposed to this Hollywood Posh Spice thin that attracts female celebs like a siren song…

  5. TheOriginalKitten says:

She should date David Gandy-you know, another “ugly duckling” *eye roll*

    • bns says:

Then they can move to Venus, get married, and have hideous, socially awkward children.

  6. Dee Cee says:

Eva and Scar Jo should argue their pity me gripes with Anne Hathaway moderating..

  7. Lise says:

Her mom was a really famous and beautiful french actress, it must have been difficult growing up in her shadow, it can explain why she feels like the ugly duckling, even now.

  8. layla says:

Even beautiful woman need to fight the demons of their own self doubt.

Perhaps she is fishing for compliments, or perhaps she truly feels like an unattractive alien in LaLaLand. She is by no means LaLaLand conventionally pretty, and I imagine she has been told that countless times.

Add the “really famous and beautiful french actress” mom… and I can begin to believe that these are very real self doubts.

    • Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

That’s how I understood her layla. In L.A. she feels like the ugly duckling–whereas maybe in NY and elsewhere she is the lovely swan.
It sounds as if maybe she is surprised to be thought of as SO BEAUTIFUL. She probably thinks of herself as pretty, but not BEAUTIFUL.
      I like her.

    • ViktoryGin says:

      Thank you.

As if you have to be a troll in order to be physically worthy of having bad self-esteem.

I find comments like the above-mentioned just another example of people exercising their own inscurities on celebrities.

Hollywood is a place that feeds on one’s compromised sense of self worth as it values externalities. That is not an easy thing to continue to face day in and day out.

I don’t think that she was fishing for a pity party so much as she was having a moment of candor.

And while the idea of attractive appearance flanked by low-esteem seems to confound a lot of people, it actually goes hand in hand usually.

I really do think that girl is a bit left of center. That’s why I love her. Read her bio on IMDB the girl is legitimately on some other shit. She reminds me of Marion Cotillard in that regard.

And by the way, apparently some of us are reincarnated beings from Venus that came to earth thousands of years ago via the star Sirius, so who knows? Mayby she really is from Venus.

      • trh says:

Via Sirius? That’s a bit out of the way if you’re coming from Venus.

Anyway, it’s obvious Venus isn’t ready for habitation (like Utah)

  9. Ava says:

She looks so much like Jeanne Moreau. Except that Jeanne’s beauty has something more natural about it, Eva is more on the sexy side.

  10. Good grief says:

I believe her actually…I think she’s a sincere person who is fundamentally her own person, and somewhat rare as a fairly young woman in major films.

I may be persuaded because she is freaking gorgeous, sexy, seems smart, and I would love to have every stitch of clothing and piece of jewelry she wore as Vesper. And who else can wear heavy eyeliner like her after 21 and look better for it??

And I hope she’s got a lover who is twice as hot as Johnny Depp. She could do way better IMO!

  11. Navy Blue says:

Whatever didn’t this chick claim she was hotter than Charlize Theron? She is full of it.

  12. Michele says:

It’s always the gorgeous ones who insist they are: 1) unattractive 2) shy and insecure so they became actresses to overcome their insecurities 3) ugly ducklings all through childhood and school 4) didn’t have a boyfriend or many friends all through high school 5) bullied 6) misunderstood 7) blah blah blah

  13. strah says:

She has one of those faces that just slides right by me, I wouldn’t recognize her if I saw her again.

  14. original kate says:

right…i’m sure she was teased in junior high for being an “ugly duckling.” NOT. unless she had braces, glasses and zits that she grew out of why would she feel like an ugly duckling? and when you are called “gorgeous” in print and making lists of the hottest women why would you feel unattractive?

    compliment fishing, for sure.

  15. Meadowlark says:

I’m so in love with Eva! To me, she’s one of the most gorgeous actresses around today.

And I happen to think it’s normal and okay for absolutely anyone to feel insecure about their looks. We’re all human.

  16. LittleDeadGrrl says:

She is beautiful but its kind of an offbeat beauty. I can actually believe she may not think she’s beautiful in LA. She could be fishing for compliments though. Who knows. She didn’t make it sound like she’d had some horrible childhood and was bullied for being ugly.

  17. ramona says:

    I think she’s stunning. I think I’m in love.

  18. I Choose Me says:

Um, I think she was saying that she’s more conscious of her aging and the insecurities that comes with it because so many in Hollywood have gone the botox route in order to preserve their youth. So she feels like the odd man out or ugly duckling for not getting it done. At least that’s what I got from her comment and not so much that she was fishing for compliments.

  19. Michael Kelly says:

I can say as a guy that, even though I have known some really beautiful women, most were very insecure. When you put so much stock on a “depreciating” asset, you are bound to think of when that asset is not worth as much.

    • sup says:

yeah but she was an effing bond girl! you’d think even the most insecure would realize that they’re not bad after being cast as such

  20. trh says:

    I love Eva Green!!!

  21. Rosemary says:

Shape your eye-brows, damnit. It would do you the world of good.

  22. Realist says:

Eva, fuck Hollyweird standards! The plebs – the masses of people who pay that industry’s bills by buying the tickets and videos and etc – like you as you are for the most part so stick to your guns and hold your head up high when surrounded by other celebrities! 🙂
