One of the biggest headlines to come out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival amfAR gala is the international debut of Aishwarya Rai’s postpartum figure. And that kind of sucks. As we discussed last week, Rai was facing increased criticism in India for not losing her pregnancy weight fast enough. The discussion became an international gossip subject after Indian papers published a recent photo of Rai with a double chin (gasp!). Anyway, the overwhelming majority of people felt like “For the love of God, leave the poor woman alone!!” And after all of that, Aishwarya still came to Cannes and… Lord, this woman is gorgeous. Look at that face. The dress/sari/Mandarin-jacket ensemble is by Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla. I don’t mind that she went for a more traditional, conservative look, but I would have loved to see her in just a straight-up silk sari in a beautiful jewel tone. Still, I don’t even see what the fuss is all about with her figure – she only looks slightly heavier than she did last year. What’s the BFD?
Georgina Chapman in her own Marchesa design. TRAINWRECK. Good God, does she not see how awful and budget her own designs are while she wears them?
Gerard Butler looks slim and soberish. I wonder if he boned anyone in the bathroom?
Julianna Margulies in L’Wren Scott. Elegant simplicity. Yes, it’s kind of boring, but I adore a cap sleeve when it’s done well. Julianna always looks better when she keeps her style simple, with clean lines and solid colors too. I also love JM’s hair here – I dislike it when she slicks everything back – it ages her. Looser styles compliment her face. My one complaint: the lining seems off somehow and in some photos you can totally see JM’s nips. Also: her husband is so cute.

She was at one of my husband’s gigs and back then she was so thin she was ugly.
This was at the height of ER. She looks so much better now. Much prettier.

As far as Rai, I feel sorry for her right now. I had to lose 90 pounds due to medical issues and I had my SIL tell me that I had one of the most beautiful faces she and her friends had ever seen, but it was ruined by my body. Soul crushing. The face is subjective, not bragging, just that feeling of great, I’m gorgeous but fat so I am invisible.
Now she weighs 30 pounds more than me, but I’d never say such a thing to her.

It’s always jealous women who criticize weight/beauty/looks but shut their trap when they end up on the opposite end of things (which is usually inevitable for most women as they age or become pregnant). A few years ago, a girl who works in my office told me (at a large holiday dinner no less) that I needed to lose weight because I was so beautiful before. This coming from a woman who is skinny but has sunken eyes and looks tired all the time because she starves herself to maintain her weight. It was incredibly rude and hypocritical coming from someone who wasn’t exactly healthy herself. There is usually a reason when a person gains weight over a year or two. It can be pregnancy, unemployment, depression, or health reasons. If one is truly concerned about a loved one’s weight gain, there are better ways of addressing it than calling a person fat or telling them they need to lose weight because they are no longer as beautiful as they once were. Anyway, a year after that incident I took the initiative to exercise more often and make some dietary changes. I lost weight and I can tell how jealous she gets when people tell me how beautiful I look or that I look great in a particular outfit. People who criticize others don’t do it out of concern but because they enjoy making people feel bad and are probably jealous of another aspect of that person’s success whether it be their beauty, career, wealth, family, etc.

I lost the old fashioned way, diet and exercise. Stopped eating processed and fast food, no soda. After we started moving around the world and eating clean, walking more the last bit has fallen off.
I just feel better and no I would never mock her for being heavier or anyone else. It is so mean and I swear I will never forget that sentence. I’ve been athletic and fit my whole life and that period of my life was misery enough without that “helpful” comment from my SIL.

I so relate to the comment from Kibbles, years ago I was slim, over time I have put the weight on and I have had these comments said to me – you have such a pretty face if only you could lose the weight, another comment I know you are overweight because of your boyfriend this comment was from someone who is short and stumpy telling me I was fat and should lose the weight – I would never feel the need to say to someone you need to lose the weight, people who are overweight know they are and don’t need to be constantly told

A lot of liner on Aishwarya or on Julianna? With Aishwarya I thought the eye make up complimented the traditional Indian outfit with the kohl liner and the gold make up.
I too would have liked a silk sari. I drool whenever I see red silk sari material threaded in gold. Although I think she might look better in a green or a gold.
Julianna looks lovely. My only major problem with Aishwarya is her hair. It’s too severe or maybe I’m just not used to seeing her with her hair up. Her hair color with the golden undertones is my second fave thing about her after her gorgeous eyes.

I agree with you. Her face is beautiful. And like Kaiser said I also think it’s much better if she wore something more simple and flattering that will showcase her face as that sari/jacket ensemble she’s wearing only makes her seems heavier than she actually is.
But I wouldn’t blame her either, her critics were saying hurtful things to her that some might got to her hence the sari/jacket ensemble that cover her up.
Kudos for her coming out to Cannes with confidence and showing them that she is still beautiful no matter what her size is.
The critics should be ashamed for not giving a break for a woman who just gave a birth. Yes, she’s a celebrity but she’s a human, too!

Aishwarya Rai is one of the most stunning faces I’ve ever seen. I do however somewhat agree with tha critics – she’d look better a little bit thinner.

Are you actually saying you agree with them that she needs to drop that weight pronto (which is how it sounds when you say you agree with ger critics)? I hope not. Yes, her figure looked better and less matronly (and downright sexy) prior to getting pregnant but she is still absolutely beautiful so, while she may be sexier at her pre-pregnancy weight so is no less beautiful and nobody should face that sort of pressure to drop weight gained from pregnancy unless it’s negatively impacting their health

I might be wrong, but I’m starting to wonder if it ISN’T about baby weight – she is a gorgeous woman (any size) but the weight she seems to be getting crap for (the GASP – double chin especially) doesn’t seem so much baby related as possibly medical. She seems more… swollen then ‘fat’. Her hands seem swollen as well – and I’ve seen both happen with cousins. One was on a steroid treatment from hell, the other was struggling to get her thyroid under control.
Is it weird to be hoping that it IS just babyweight (and therefor a happy reason to skip the gym and calorie obsession that grips so many actresses and instead simply be enjoying the new little soul in her life) because otherwise… the crap that gets piled on from the meds can be a lot harder to get rid of, and cause quite a bit of misery in the process?

In my honest opinion I think Aishwarya always wanted to gain weight. I think she wants to be curvier. On the show 60 minutes…interview…The interviewer was eating with her and he asked her if she is afraid of gaining weight and she said no. I say this because she has always been thin in all her bollywood movies and music videos. She probably doesn’t mind the change in weight. When she does start working out she can have more meat where she wants it…butt, hips. Just my opinion.
