Did world leaders refuse to shake Bush’s hand at G20 summit?

There’s a lot of buzz over this clip of President Bush going down the line of world leaders at the G20 Summit and not shaking anyone’s hand or being offered a hand to shake. Many people note that this video is misleading because he had already met with everyone earlier in the day and shook all their hands and that’s why he’s just kind of walking by, head down. One commenter on Huffington Post calls it “diplomatic protocol” and another says “But this is clearly not about being shunned by global leaders as he had previously met with each for a ceremonial hand-shake photo-op.” Others say it really looks like there’s a coordinated effort not to shake his hand and note that no one really looks him in the eye.

One of the most accurate comments may be this one:
“It makes sense that nobody is shaking his hand because they had seen each other previously, while some of the others had not seen one another. HOWEVER, the fact remains that they are still ignoring him. Other people would still chat or smile or laugh or toss off an aside. Not here. He is pretty much the invisible man.”

To me it looks like he’s trying to avoid shaking anyone’s hand for whatever reason, probably because he already met them all, and that toward the end of the line the other important people pick up on it. Once he starts looking up they figure he’s not into shaking hands and don’t offer one. It’s not like Bush put his hand out and got ignored, but there’s definitely some tension in the rarefied air.

The National Enquirer has a new story this week that seems like speculation about how Laura Bush’s new memoir may be a tell-all about her husband’s problems. They say she’s going to dish about how Bush started drinking again after 9/11. They also claim that Laura thought Bush had something going on with Condoleezza Rice at one point, though, so their source is a bit suspect.

  1. Definitely weird. Even if he had met them earlier one would think they would at least acknowledge each other with a nod. Its almost unprecedented - only pariah dictators are usually treated this way. We all know he’s completely alienated most of the ordinary citizens of world but for diplomats to do it is amazing.

Rumours have been around for years about Bush and Condi — wouldn’t be surprised

….or if Laura files for divorce after a decent interval

  2. I would die, well hopefully not actually, if he and Condi were makin’ it, (Condi is rather hot for over 50 and Laura is BUSTED and vile and cold). Now, I abhored Bushee as a pres, but, BUT..no one can make me laugh as hard as he does when I catch him on c-span. He’s HIGH-larious. And I’d LOVE to jog with the guy. Get into his brain. Burn some bush over there in Crawford.

  3. Interestingly enough, “Globe” magazine, one of the most downmarket U.S. tabloids, has been running stories about GWB’s drinking and marriage problems for several years now. At one point, it claimed Laura had moved out of the White House for a period.

I suppose it’s such a disreputable publication that no one ever bothered to deny the story or sue.

It would be quite some fuel for this site’s ongoing “should we believe the tabloids” debate if Globe turned out to be right.

Globe also suggested that Laura was planning a divorce after the couple left the White House.

  5. This doesn’t look at all like he’s being shunned. He probably saw them all 5 minutes before this press call took place. Of course he’s alienated everyone but these are world leaders, not a bunch of bully boys trying to diss him in front of the world’s media.

But Bush and Rice? Really? Both seem so completely asexual.

  6. I really enjoy this blog and stop by it daily for the most part… for the CELEBRITY stories. Most of the political stories on here often have a celebrity element. But I’m commenting on this one because I’m failing to make the celebrity connection here. I go to other places for my political news, so it’s somewhat dissapointing to see this blog clogged with political stories.

  10. nah, just another situation of the media blowing things out of proportion. i saw a couple people smile and nod at bush as he walked by. maybe bush is a germaphobe and saw someone cough in their hands. that’d squick me off and i’d not shake hands either.

  11. This article gave a balanced account of the story and if Bush isn’t a celebrity:

    ce⋅leb⋅ri⋅ty
    1. a famous or well-known person.
    2. fame; renown.

Exactly what would you call him?

  12. Sure, and Saint Obama is going to charm all the leaders of the world into liking the US again. PLEASE! Al Qaeda, Iran, and Russia will continue to be hostile towards us. That’s what we get for electing a “cool” president.

  14. Actually, you’re misinformed.
World leaders have already said the image of the US has improved since Obama’s election, and why wouldn’t it?
Before this, people saw America as a racist dictatorship that basically wants to beat people up and steal their stuff (oil).
So I, for one, welcome the ‘cool’ ness. 8)
And it doesn’t surprise me that they’d refuse to shake his hand, his behavior at the last summit was atrocious, his final words to the other attendees were, “Goodbye, from the world’s biggest polluters”, with a nasty little smirk. That, taken with his marriage to the oil industry, and his administrations strident denials of the existence of Global Warming, would make him a persona non grata at any such event.

  19. He’s pissy because he’s being sent back to the kiddie table :D He was a little turd in a big bowl, the world and it’s leaders knew it and now they can happily act on that sentiment.

  20. I’m about to defend Dubya. *gasp*

He had already done the (press-pool attended) individual meet-and-greet with every leader as they arrived. They already had some meetings and had lunch (with an attendant press-pool, those images are funny/scary, btw) with the whole group.

They’re not shaking hands because they’ve been together for several hours at this point.

  21. ^^^^^^^^^^^ what he/she said.

I saw the footage from BEFORE this, and they actually all looked quite pleased to see him.

I feel a bit bad for him for the way this whole thing got spun tbh. I don’t think Bush is really a bad guy, it’s the people orchastrating things behind him who do the really dirty deeds.

  22. ZOMG Kaiser!

I bet if you were old enough, you’d have voted for Nixon too!

I don’t think Bush is inherently evil either. I think he’s mostly dumb and being manipulated by evil. Just like my ex-husband.

Glad to be rid of them both.

  23. ZOMG SYKO - So you’re admitting to voting for Nixon!?!?! ZOMG FINALLY.

Yeah, I think Bush is dumb/evil like a fox. But if anyone’s going to make fun of him for the G-20 summit, it should have been for the fancy-pants menu that was served.

  24. LMAO Syko!!!

I’ve only now had a chance to look at the clip above - it does look odd in that everyone else is shaking hands good-o. But what struck me is that Bush only seemed to not look at most of them and just speak to two or three people, Gordon Brown, Sarkosy and I think Romano Prodi. (I could be wrong about the last one, both in the speaking to and the name). I’m sure it’s nothing, it’s just the one thing that struck me as strange.

  25. They don’t have to pretend to be courteous anymore with him.

Bush didn’t seem surprised either by the way they rejected his greeting. This leads me to believe that they had some kind of conversation or agreement beforehand.

Either way, it says a lot in a very subtle way.

  28. This man has literally done more to ruin the planet than any other president in U.S. history. He’s lied, started 2 wars that he appears completely uninterested in finishing meanwhile bankrupting the country, doing little to nothing to solve the financial crisis we’re in, choosing the worst band of incompetent bandits for a cabinet in history. It just goes on and on. I’d be hard pressed not to spit on him if I ever met him face to face.

  32. Even if he met everyone earlier in the day, this is a photo opportunity so I would think he would shake everyone’s hand again just to avoid akwardness of it.

Not only that, he doesn’t even make eye contact with most of them. And some of the commenters also noted no smiles are shared.

IMO it seems really bizarre but I LOVE IT!!!!
