Alex Pettyfer in Men’s Health UK: kinda hot & losing the douchiness?

Alex Pettyfer

Men’s Health UK is quickly becoming a Magic Mike-only publication. Alex Pettyfer covers the August issue — hot on the heels of last month’s declaration from Joe Manganiello about the “return of The Man.” Alex doesn’t come off as much of an egoist like his fellow stripping buddy, Joe, though. In fact, Alex is steadfastly repairing not only his professional reputation but also his air of douchiness. Did anyone else marvel at how well the Magic Mike makeup artists covered up his “Thank You” crotch tattoo? And the movie’s financial success has already gone miles to undo the damage that two cinematic bombs (Beastly, I Am Number Four) did to his early career. Kaiser thought he was really good in the movie (I agree) with both a great body and a convincing American accent. Here are a few excerpts from Alex’s interview, which isn’t exactly riveting stuff, but the pictures are great:

Alex Pettyfer

He beefed up for Magic Mike: “I put on a bit of weight for this film. I started off at 169lb (77kg) and went up to 196lb (88kg). They told me I was too big, so in the end I had to take it back down to 185lb (84kg).”

He’s taking a gym break: “When you eat and train as a sportsman I found it very enjoyable. But at the same time, it was hard, particularly at the start and I still remember not wanting to be in the gym. That’s why I don’t want to train at the moment.”

On his goals: “I’m very ambitious. I live in reality but I have dreams I want to fulfil – I want to be a director, and I’ve already started my own production company. But I also have a measure of success that I keep to myself. It’s something very personal to me.”

On his heroes: “My dad’s one of my biggest heroes. I also think Paul Newman’s an inspiration. I know a lot of people say that, but I love that he’s a great role model and a humanitarian. I admire people who don’t necessarily want to change the world, but try to make it a better environment.”

God, Alex is really dialing it down during his latest round of press interviews, right? He used to be so misunderstood, but he’s got some good PR people helping him out now. I’m not sure how I feel about the “kidnapping” theme that Men’s Health UK dreamt up for this photoshoot, but Alex looks damn good nonetheless.

YAWN. This guy bores me to tears. Now are we going to call him vapid and superficial based on this interview? You know, like we would if it was a woman saying this stuff?
Yeah I know it’s “Men’s Health” but it doesn’t make it (or him) any more interesting.

I used to have such a crush on him when I was a kid and he was in Alex Rider.
Then when he started acting like a douche I rapidly went off him. If he keeps this up, I think I may un-blacklist him :)

No and No. At least he is not on a triple failure ride of death like Taylor Kitsch (sp). His failures in comparison are minor.

He’s totes hawt!!! HWood gave him a second (third) chance so he’s trying really hard not to eff it up imo.

Or maybe Joe Manganiello’s douchiness has outclassed everyone else’s.

Having said that, I think Pettyfer is hot. Too young, but I still would.

He’s pretty but the rest is so…*YAWN
He lacks that “je ne sais quoi”.

That being said, what the heck are these editors of that magazine doing with those covers?! They always look strange and something seems off, ALWAYS!

Still a douche. And he was not at all hot in the movie.

I think he is losing the douchiness, he was really adorable at the beginning of Magic Mike (the ending . . . not so much) but I liked him in it. Also, does that tattoo really say “thank you”? I thought that was a joke.

Nothing about this is making me forget his previous douche-tasticness. Shudder.

    • Anname says:

Agree! This is how he acts now that he has received media training, the “before” interviews were his actual personality. Remember how much chatter there was about how difficult he was to work with. I haven’t heard anything like that from the Magic Mike stuff, so maybe he has improved. But honestly I have zero interest in this guy.

  12. MJ says:

Does he know that Paul Newman’s dead? Not to detract from Newman’s awesome legacy, but Pettyfer refers to him in the present tense.

  13. Eye Roll says:

It takes 5 minutes to do some research. The tattoo does not actually say ‘thank you’ as is evidenced by the bajillion photos out there where the Japanese lettering is very clear.

  14. I Choose Me says:

Sigh. He doesn’t actually have a tattoo that says ‘Thank you’ See Eve’s comment above. He was making a joke! One that I guess has not gone over very well.

He is only 22? There’s some photoshopping going on here. He looks much older than that.

  16. Feebee says:

I don’t know where I’ve been but I’d barely heard of this guy before this movie. I’d seen the name but couldn’t put a face to it so I have no idea what his previous douchiness entails.

Now that’s it’s been established his crotch tattoo says his name and not thank you, can we decide whether sticking your name on your crotch is a good idea?

  17. Phie says:

Here is the Japanese translation of his name.

    アレックス.

Now compare those letters to his tattoo (they are the same), and Google translate them.

It is actually his name, and he has stated that it does not mean ‘Thank you’ in interviews since.

  18. lu says:

Thank you to all explaining his tattoo. Although having his name isn’t much better.

English people have a different sense of humour to Americans. I hate when you take their jokes seriously, latch on to it and refuse to let go.

The new issue of Us or EW (both came today) say Channing Tatum thought he was an ass. Article said CH was exec producer and would not work with him again or even do press with him.
