Rachel McAdams’ lopsided Elie Saab at TIFF: budget or beautiful?

These are photos from the TIFF premiere of To the Wonder, a Terrence Malick romance/drama “centered on a man who reconnects with a woman from his hometown after his marriage to a European woman falls apart.” Rachel McAdams plays the hometown girl, Olga Kurylenko plays the European woman (I’m assuming). The film also features Ben Affleck and Javier Bardem, neither of whom were at the TIFF premiere. So let’s just discuss the girls, shall we?

Rachel wore this lop-sided, one-sleeved Elie Saab gown which I kind of hate. I almost always dislike half-and-half dresses, where one side is conservative and the other side is all “SKIN!” I think the people at Elie Saab should have just decided whether the dress should have sleeves or not, instead of looking like they just “forgot” to add the additional sleeve. I also dislike the too-high neckline – I feel strangled on her behalf. The color is good, though. It would have been better if Rachel would go with a darker hair color. I guess we should be happy that she’s not still trying to make that horrible, too-light blonde work, but this color isn’t some big improvement. Rachel is a beautiful woman – it takes real effort to make her look this bland and unappealing.

Olga Kurylenko wore Emilio Pucci – I actually thought THIS was the Elie Saab. It looks like Elie Saab, right? Anyhoodle, I kind of love this dress. I love a long sleeve, I love some sparkle done well, and I love this color on a brunette. I was paying attention to Olga’s recent promotional tour through Venice, and I have to say… she did not wear anything half as cute as this dress.

Love the color of both dresses.

I just want to rip off that fug sleeve on Rachel’s dress…then it would be stunning. The first picture looks amazing since you can’t really see the sleeve. Love love love Olga’s dress!

    • emmieapricot says:

Yes! The dress would be stunning if that other sleeve was cut-off. I usually love one shoulder gowns but this one is an epic fail.

  3. Marta says:

I like dress of McAdams but she got wrongsize( too big) or the cut of armholes is wrong or the sleeve is too tight.Patternmaker can´t do her work.
    color is beautifull!!!
Kurylenkos dress is very nice but the litlle belt is cheap looking. this could be great look of her with the shoes but take of the belt first, it is not even ton sur ton:)

  4. Rice says:

Rachel’s dress looks like they ran out of fabric for the other sleeve.

Olga’s dress is exquisite. IMO, the plunging neckline is tastefully done.

  5. Liv says:

The dress is okay. Rachel is so beautiful, she can pull it off 😉

  6. Ri says:

I love the color but the dress is fug.

  7. DanaG says:

Rachels dress is fug it needs either two long sleeves or no sleeves. I think no sleeves would sex it up. Her hair is awful it looks like she forgot to do it and the color is awful. Olga looks great and your right I would have picked it as the Eli Saab it is his style. Love the color on her too.

Shaking head in agreement…..the dress is too big and her hair is terrible..but she is undoubtedly a pretty lady.

  8. pretty says:

    she never ages!!
She looks same as she was in Mean Girls….so pretty~!

  9. I.want.shoes says:

Rachel’s dress is wrong for her. It would look great on Nicole Kidman who is tall enough to pull it off. On Rachel, the extra fabric is overwhelming.

    • kibbles says:

This dress would look wrong on anyone. The sleeve is ridiculous. It would have looked semi-decent had both sides been sleeveless. The dress also makes someone as tiny as Rachel McAdams look frumpy and bigger than her actual size. Imagine if someone with curves wore that dress.

  10. SleepyJane says:

Rachel is so beautiful, I can’t even stand it. Is it just me or does she look preggo?

    • Mimi says:

She’s def got the glow going. She so much looks like Robin Wright here!

    • Jackie says:

I think she is pregnant too. Probably why she hasn’t changed her hair color.

      • Insertrandomname says:

yes i was just thinking that! she does look pregnant – like with a bump and her arms seem to be chubbier than usual… im not saying i think she looks fat or anything- not at all – but preggers. Definitely, maybe.

    • Amy says:

That was my first thought, too, after glancing at the first photo. A Sheen/McAdams baby would be too precious.

  11. ZigZagZoey says:

Totally agree that I WISH she would go back to a beautiful brunette!
Also totally agree that I HATE one sleeved dresses. I could not wear it, it would drive me NUTS.

  12. TG says:

I love Rachel McAdams and that color looks great on her but I hate one-sleeved dresses. It screams of 80’s so much and not in a good way.

  13. Jen34 says:

Good lord, but Rachel looks awful from head to toe. Completely awful.

The other actress, though, looks exquisite.

  14. grace says:

Pretty sure both dresses are Saab.

    Rachel looks pregnant to me.

  15. judyjudy says:

Rachel is one of my very favorite….so beautiful…but that dress is plain AWFUL.

  16. Onyx XV says:

Ugh. I wish they would ban the color green. I just loathe it so completely. It’s not flattering on anyone, IMO. Both dresses are hideous. I usually love Pucci, but no, just no on that shiny, sparkly piece of green tinsel. And Rachel McAdams, bless her heart, is still, after all these years, in dire need of a stylist. You’re right, she is beautiful, and she never quite realizes her full beauty potential.

  17. Mara says:

Rachel is such a pretty lady !

  18. Lousy dresser, period says:

I think she’s such a pretty girl, but her fashion sense stinks. She could be so much more attractive with the right style.

    Well hello Lawrence of Arabia.
