Katy Perry admits to getting help from spanx: does this make you like her more?

Katy Perry

Here are some photos (that we never got around to posting) of Katy Perry performing at the America Forward event in October. As you can see, she’s wearing one of her infamous rubber dresses that always make me feel terribly uncomfortable. It’s not the revealing, hugging nature of these dresses themselves that make me cringe, but I just imagine that she must be boiling underneath because her skin can’t breathe. It just can’t be healthy, and Katy probably peels these things off as soon as possible. Or maybe she likes it. Kinky.

Anyway, I’ve always thought that Katy was fortunate enough (or must literally work her ass off) to have the body to wear these outfits in the first place. Not so much, as Katy revealed the other night on the red carpet of the Snowflake Ball. Katy was wearing this semi-transparent dress, which prevented her from indulging in her favorite accessory, Spanx. Then she started talking about how fat she felt at that very moment. It seems like an odd thing to talk about to a journo, right?

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been called “The First Lady of Hot” by Maxim, but she doesn’t always feel worthy of the title.

Us Weekly caught up with the “Part of Me” singer at the Nov. 28 UNICEF Snowflake Ball in New York City, where she and other celebs including Selena Gomez, Uma Thurman, Tony Bennett and Kelly Ripa walked the blue carpet and helped raise money for UNICEF’S lifesaving children’s programs.

The pop star, 28, was stunning in a tight, floor-length, semi-sheer navy Naeem Khan dress with a matching cape, Guiseppi Zanotti heels, a Judith Leiber clutch, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels — but she admitted she didn’t feel as good as others thought she looked.

“I feel like my [fat] is sticking out so bad right now,” she confided in Us at the bash. “I almost always wear [Spanx], but not tonight, and I feel it pushing out, making me look fat.”

“I like to say I run on the elliptical for 30 minutes watching CNN, but I don’t do it often enough,” she added. “So I’m just like, ‘Oh, I guess I’m not fitting into this Lanvin dress for these couple of months.'”

Perry may not always love her curves, but plenty of other people do — including on-again boyfriend John Mayer, who recently accompanied the singer on a romantic tour of the Old Mission in her hometown of Santa Barbara, Calif. The two have also been spotted packing on the PDA at several Hollywood hot spots.

“They were in their own world,” a guest at Perry’s October birthday bash told Us of the couple, who reunited in September after briefly separating in August. “She didn’t even talk to her friends much. It was just her and John. She’s obsessed with him.”

[From Us Weekly]

Even though Katy generally irritates me, I have to admit that it’s refreshing for her to admit to having a little hidden wardrobe help … although she does sort of excuse herself by admitting she’s sometimes too lazy to exercise. Here’s what I want from a celebrity — someone who will admit that they work out all the time and still have some problem areas. Because that’s something that happens in the real world. Even though I run anywhere between 25-30 miles per week (on the treadmill and outside), keep a relatively healthy diet, and am at a target weight, there’s still that sneaky thigh cellulite problem. So yeah, I appreciate that Katy is acknowledging getting some help from Spanx. Does this make me like her just a little bit more? Maybe.

No, it doesn’t (nor it makes me dislike her less).

    • marie says:

agreed, although I’m not sure I could like her less.

    • Amelia says:

      Yeah, I’m indifferent.
Good for her for feeling chatty about it, but I don’t think it’s that much of a secret – we’ve seen renegade Bridget pants sticking out of dresses before.

    • I.want.shoes says:

      Same here.

Is it really a revelation that celebrities use Spanx?

      • emmie_a says:

I remember a celebrity stylist saying that probably 90% of celebrities you see on the red carpet are wearing Spanx.

And I’m not a Katy fan so this news doesn’t make me like her more.

  2. Lindsey says:

An untalented poptart in Spanx is still an untalented poptart.

  3. Ms Kay says:

Meh. She’s doing it to gain sympathy and look like the cool girl who admits her body flaws… It was either that or being caught and make it even worse haha!

  4. lizzi says:

    I don’t see any fat. STFU Katy…

  5. ella says:

Ok can someone tell me what KIND of Spanx these celebs use under those tiny dresses? I bought one of those “up to my armpits” Spanx panties and they do nothing for my lady lumps.

    • Erinn says:

I have a pair that go from mid thigh to my bust for when I’m wearing clingier dresses. I think it’s all in getting the sizing right. And I think some celebs actually double up on them. But, you have to watch because if you get the sizing wrong, it can cause the extra weight to spill out of them and cause more ridges.

I have to say, I like the result of mine. I’m not going for being smaller, so much as smoother looking.

      • jenny piccolo says:

I tried Spanx once and all it did was push my fat into areas where there should NEVER be any fat (my armpits). Didn’t like it & won’t do it again. Decided to just go to the gym instead. Was that TMI?

  6. megs283 says:

You know, maybe if her clothes weren’t so gosh-darn tight, she wouldn’t feel the need…because she is in fabulous shape.

  7. Birdix says:

No comment on perry, but wow, impressed that you run that much each week. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. txmom says:

My kids made me watch the Katy Perry “Part of Me” movie, and now…. argh! I can’t help kind of liking her!! She seems genuinely nice! Her voice is kind of awesome! She really did build her career herself! Ack!

  9. bella says:

anyone else think she look exactly like jenny mccarthy in the middle pic with the short blonde hair?

on another note – i just don’t see her appeal – spanx or no spanx.

  10. Aubra says:

I thought so too! Katie isn’t annoying as she is though, not to me anyhow!

    • bella says:

      true.
      JM can be annoying.

i think the short blonde look for KP is far more attractive than her other looks.
      she should stick to it…

  11. SportsGal says:

Used to really dislike her, but her movie was on a flight I was on recently, so I watched it.

I came across a little bit impressed by her and found myself liking her.

  12. Chatcat says:

Doesn’t move me at all. She is a pop drop in time…one or two songs, one or two gimmicky outfits and poof…next!

  13. BW says:

Spanx = long legged, high waisted underwear that cannot be easily removed in an airplane toilet for a quickie. Thank goodness she’s wearing some.

  14. Zorbitor says:

She’s reset many industry records! That new Chris Wallace song sounds just like her. When I found out it was a dude I felt like Eddie Murphy.

  15. Bowers says:

Jeez, I’m sure they all get “help” and that’s fine–whatever. Most of them need more head help than body help anyway.

  16. MsGoblin says:

    I should be so fat.

  17. Darlene says:

Dude, you run 20-35 miles per week? You rock.

    • I.want.shoes says:

I think she said she runs (on the elliptical machine) for 30 minutes, not miles.

    • KellyinSeattle says:

That’s still impressive, compared to me, at least. I take my son to the gym everyday yet only set foot in it if I need to run in to pee.
I think Katy looks better w/ dark hair; yes, a bit like a young Demi, but she annoys me.

  18. Jessica says:

she resembles demi moore in that dark dress

  19. judyjudy says:

I don’t care what kind of underpants she or anyone else wears. I loathe this ‘movement’ of sharing intimate details being seen as empowering. I don’t care about your underwear, your pregnancy tests, your body functions, your pube preferences, etc…..

  20. shewolf says:

I bet she felt fat without her security blanket-like spanx and then thought she’d say it first before she saw it in the headlines. I know Id do the same if I was a celebrity.

  21. Sweet Dee says:

I thought it was common knowledge that everyone in Hollywood wears Spanx all the time, unless it can be seen beneath the outfit, like in the case of a transparent dress. I’m pretty sure that’s why she said it, she wasn’t “admitting” anything, it’s status quo.

  22. Moi says:

I’m sharing, I LOVE my hourglass angel body suit! And it has “that area” free of material to use the restroom, so no need to take it off. Couldn’t live without mine.

    • j.eyre says:

I will share too – I live in foundation pieces. Mostly I wear flattening camisoles because the thigh things are always visible on me.

Like you, Bedhead, I run 4 miles a day and follow a healthy diet but I need to extra help to smooth it all out.

      • Moi says:

4 miles a day, that’s awesome. 3 is my limit with 30 mins of kickboxing, but lately that’s only been about two days a week. I will look into those foundation pieces!

  23. eileen says:

Wearing SPANX this very moment. Thank you SPANX.

  24. Stuart Horsely says:

No. She is still a liar about her rack being real. It’s not, and there’s plenty of YouTube and other evidence that it’s fake. “The rack is real” my ass. It’s a very good boob-job, mind you, but it’s a job for sure.

  25. TheOneAndOnly says:

No, it won’t Nothing will make me like her fake infantile persona, her awful autotuned studio created drivel, that her “edginess” attempted is a joke as she is a corporate suck up big time (check out a WSJ article from a few months ago), and the fact that she has almost no talent and her intellect makes a parakeet look like Stephen Hawking (have you watched her closely in interviews?), she’s a joke all the way around; great marketing though. I guess i haven’t had enough coffee this morning.

  26. phoenixthecat says:

the way I’m reading it, I feel bad for KP: she clearly looks awesome w/o the spanx but seems obsessed with fat that isn’t there…it sounds like the exact same thing my (very thin) friend who has struggled with body image her whole life would say and that’s hard to watch ๐Ÿ™

  27. Katie says:

The only thing that’ll make me like her more (or at all, really) is if she becomes a hermit. This article actually makes me like her less, because I’m so tired of skinny girls saying they feel/look fat just so someone can tell them that they’re crazy. This chick KNOWS she isn’t fat; she’s just fishing for compliments.

  28. Kristen says:

I never liked Katy Perry but then I watched her documentary. I recommend it. It shows her as more human and the pieces where it shows her relationship falling apart is very sad – it is awful watching her heart break, times which it did’t seem like she even knew the camera was there. It made me see her as more of a real person and I like her better for it. And it really seems like he did her wrong.

  29. emma says:

I DO like that dress & cape thing!

  30. Lizi says:

it doesn’t because her music is still annoying and sucks.

  31. Steph says:

Same here, behead! That’s the amount I run (treadmill hills) and I def still have some cellulite and a little extra belly fat. It sucks! I have to eat perfectly to slim down more, and I just can’t give up everything!
