Lea Michele in pepto pink Valentino at the SAGs: pretty or try-hard?

This is a post dedicated to the women of Glee at last night’s SAG Awards. We’ll be getting to more fashion and winners shortly. Glee was nominated for outstanding ensemble performance in a comedy series, which went to Modern Family. (A complete list of winners is here.) It feels like Glee is on the way out, but I could be wrong, it could hang around for a while longer. I’ve thought that show’s days were numbered since the second season. (There are rumors that Glee may move to be set in NY City to portray the teenagers’ lives as they leave high school. You know Ryan Murphy, he switches up his shows all the time, continuity be damned.)

One of the stars who is likely to have some kind of breakout career is Lea Michele, shown here posing very hard (as usual) in pink strapless Valentino. When compared to Lea’s past looks, this isn’t bad. Remember when she wore that awful sparkly lace peekaboo Marchesa gown to the Globes last year? At last year’s SAGs, her gown was incredibly high cut and she kept sticking her leg out to show us. (That was before Angelina did it!) Good times. Anyway, this dress was very Barbie-like with the full skirt and extra flaring hemline. That may be down to the ultra pink color, though. Red Carpet Fashion Awards points out that Freida Pinto wore this dress in red last month, and it looked kind of fierce in that color.

Also, one of the first things I noticed about Lea Michele was her dip dye hair. It looked very junior high.

Naya Rivera spoke to intern Ross last night on E!’s red carpet. She loved this black Donna Karan Atelier number with a structured plunging bustline, and seemed really pleased with the way it showcased her cleavage. (I’m not being sarcastic, she actually talked about it.) The whole effect was very Queen of The Damned. I can see in the photos that this dress is even fraying along along the top. Horrible. Also, it looks like a bizarre sexy vest and skirt combination although it’s probably a full gown.

Heather Morris fugged it up as usual in a tight blue squiggle-pattern gown. Her very severe bun looked ridiculous. We only have one full photo of her, with new castmates Vanessa Lengies and Blake Jenner. It’s true that even women with incredible figures can’t wear whatever they like and think it will look good.

From the back this wasn’t as bad. Update: just noticed her tramp stamp – classy!

Jane Lynch switched it up from her typical navy blue gown, but her studded gladiator bodice was just too much. I kept noticing her during the show and thinking “WTF?”

Amber Riley was in this frou-frou deep purple gown with black tulle overlay. I think the v-shaped beaded front was just a little too much, maybe the dress would have worked without it.

Finally, Jayma Mays was stunning in a while beaded Georges Hobeika Atelier gown. This looks like vintage couture it’s so beautiful. She really killed it in this gown, and her understated hair and makeup complimented the look perfectly. Mays consistently dresses well for the red carpet, the rest of the cast should ask for her stylist’s number. Check out her star earrings!

The last girl has the only salvageable look. Actually, very pretty dress, nice trail.

The Blue dress takes the fug-cake.

    • alons-y alonso says:

+1 that white dress is the best of a bad bunch.

With Heather Morris I thought, ‘This dress…just no! It couldn’t get any….oh wait, a tramp stamp. How very unfortunate.’

      • Anname says:

I thought the same thing! That tattoo poking out of the bad dress is so awful.

      • Belle says:

Agree on both counts… the white dress is actually quite pretty.

The other one? Sadly, I actually think she wanted the tattoo to show… right? Ugh.

  2. MisJes says:

Ugh, they all look awful, except for Jayma Mays, who looks lovely and fresh.

The Glee ladies are just one big parade of fug this year.

  3. Elceibeno says:

Leah Michele and the last lady look okay, the rest of them: Not so good. Jane Lynch’s dress is ridic.

  4. marie says:

The only look I like out of all of these is Jayma Mays. She’s cute but the rest are bleh.

  5. Emma says:

All the Glee ‘stars’ are such budget looking girls… movie stars they certainly are not

  6. Nev says:

Lea looks great! She has the star quality!

  7. judyjudy says:

I love Leah’s dress. I always dreamed of making Barbie clothes my size and now here it is. I love the color, too.

Jane Lynch’s dress cracks me up.

  8. Agnes says:

wth is jane lynch wearing? who let her out of the house like that? terrible.

  9. emmie_a says:

Jayma is waay too pale to wear that shade of white. And the gown is ok but she doesn’t wear it well.

Lea Michelle is always too try-hard. Her hair looks cheap and so does her gown.

Heather doesn’t have the face for a high top bun.

Jane’s gown was a no but her hair and makeup look great.

  10. Micah says:

I actually love the pink Valentino gown….BUT….once again the tragic hair, makes everything look a little…..cheap.

  11. Michele says:

Lea Michele and Jayma Mays are my favorites. I usually like their red carpet looks.

  12. Lucy2 says:

Jayma’s is the only one I really like, but I saw that every time she walked, she had to first gather up all of the skirts so she wouldn’t step all over it. That probably got old after about five minutes!
Lea’sis okay but I don’t care for that ruffle at the bottom, and it is very Barbie.

  13. Apsutter says:

Lea always gets it wrong! I think she has this image in her head of what a movie star wears and she follows that instead of dressing for her body and style.

Jayma always look fantastic! She’s so cute in the show and on the red carpet.

  14. epiphany says:

Does Lea Michele go to EVERY event where there might be a camera? I think she may edge out Swifty for celeb with the worst CPA (Chronic Publicity Addiction.) Being LESS accessible would make them more interesting. Guess they never heard the P.T. Barnum adage, ‘always keep them wanting more.’

    • Amy says:

To answer your question, yes. Total famehound.

    • Marianne says:

She was up for an award. For Best Cast. That’s why she was there.

      • epiphany says:

That explains last night. What about the other 14,728 events she’s attended in 2013 – and it’s only January? The world doesn’t need to know every time you exhale!

    • Becky1 says:

Lea Michelle on the red carpet cracks me up. She poses so hard it’s almost to the point of parody (it makes me think of the movie “Zoolander”).

  15. Blondey says:

    Hot pink 1980’s prom dress!

    • Nicolette says:

My thoughts exactly! And I just love how snarky Joan Rivers is towards her on Fashion Police.

    • taxi says:

Yes, especially with the ruffle on the bottom. Shoulder tat – homemade in jr high?

    • Rachel says:

I was thinking hot pink 80’s pageant dress. In fact, I’m pretty sure my mom still has that dress hanging in a closet, just in a different color.

  16. Amy says:

I need Glee to stop getting nominations for things. The show sucks and most of the actors on it are horrendously annoying. This and The effing Office need to GTFO already.

  17. Marianne says:

I’ve liked all her other SAG looks, but this is the first time that I don’t.

I really liked Jenna Ushkowitz’s dress…but you don’t have a pic of it. I also liked Amber’s dress, and Vanessa’s dress. But you don’t have Vanessa’s dress either. Those were my favourites out of the glee gals. And is it me, or does Jayma look pregnant?

  18. carrie says:

nice color for Lea ‘s dress but try-hard pose

  19. taxi says:

Jane looks like another bodyguard in Game of Thrones.

  20. Sunny says:

Oh she really just thinks she’s something special…God’s singing/dancing gift to humankind…

  21. Migdalia says:

Lea and Cory look like they’re attending prom :-/

  22. jess says:

I actually liked Jane’s gown, but I think it’s because it’s the first thing I’ve seen her in that isn’t super girly (too much on her) and that actually fits.

Jayma, like always, is adorable. She just has that face and personality.

  23. IrishEyes says:

The purple/black tulle monstrosity was Christian Siriano.

  24. Happy21 says:

Jane Lynch cracks me up. Did she really think she could have pulled that off? LOL…I love her but I gotta think she was trying to be funny…

Naya R doesn’t look TOO bad except the boobs. She paid for em so she might as well show em off.

Lea looks meh. The dress is ok but her hair and make up and pose harding ruin it all. That aside, her and Cory appear happy.

Heather Morris looks awful. She has a total bangin’ dancer’s bod, I just don’t get her style.

That other girl who doesn’t have much of a role, Vanessa…she looks really pretty. Her dress looks nice on her. She looks so tiny.

Jayma Mays besides looking superthin looks really cute. And to think white makes people look heavy…

  25. Kris says:

I didn’t even know Glee was still a thing. I’m pretty sure everyone was over that after the second season. And the second season was pushing it.

  26. yolo112 says:

I actually laughed out loud when I saw Jane Lynch’s dress. And Lea..ugh..I absolutely LOATHE everything about her. All the time. Period.

  27. d says:

    Hmmmm, some nice looks here.
Likes: Naya. It looks good on her. I don’t like the frayed threads, but still. I like the mix between crazy queen of the damned top and the smooth skirt below. There’s something naughty going on there.
    Vanessa Lengies: nice pretty dress.
Amber Rily: Good dress and make up. Bad hair style though. Ruined the look sort of but don’t want to put it in dislikes column.
Jayma Mays: soooo pretty. Really well done.

    Dislikes:
    Lea’s. Too prom dressy.
    Heather Morris: ug.
Jane Lynch: wha? I like her hair and makeup though.

  28. Beautiful says:

I liked lea’s dress, not fan of the hair

  29. Patrice says:

Wow, Jayma looks completely stunning! I also think that shade of pink looks incredible with Lea’s olive skin tone and dark (“dip-dyed” Lol) hair, but the cut of that couture (?!) gown is a MESS. Why would anyone pay thousands of dollars for a dress which has a hem that looks like my 10 year old cousin stiched it in her practice sewing class?? Cray 😛

  30. valleymiss says:

Jane Lynch’s dress is bad, HOWEVER her eye makeup is perfect.

  31. Sue says:

Lea: I wore a bridesmaids dress like that!
Jane looked pretty. I think only Halle Berry could have rocked that dress. Sorry Jane!

  32. ??? says:

I can’t say I dig any of these ladies’ dresses, but Heather Morris’ dress might have (barely) been gotten away with if it were in a different color — something darker, perhaps.

Jane Lynch looks like a gladiator. Although I’ve always thought she’s actually got quite a pretty/pleasant face.

Lea Michelle is the most budget-looking of them all. If a Real Housewives movie is ever made that stars actors instead of, well, real housewives … Lea should be cast without question. She has never struck me as classy or elegant. And for all the brouhaha she’s made about standing her ground and not getting a nose job to cater to Hollywood, I swear she’s lying through her teeth. I think she very, very, very subtly tweaked her nose a while back. Not like it helped.
