Tom Cruise outside The Late Show yesterday

Tom Cruise and Jamie Oliver appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. CBS has a video clip (link leads to page, not direct video) of the episode, but I turned off pop-up blocking in both Firefox and IE and could not get it to work. It’s probably because I refuse to install RealPlayer. Maybe you’ll have better luck with it.

Tom has written a rambling article for Time’s 100 People Who Shape Our World issue in which he praises MI3 director J.J. Abrams. His writing reminds me of this crazy guy I worked for in 1998 who ran a dot com. He used words like synergy and turn-key and it was impossible to figure out what he was talking about. (Here’s a web economy bullshit generator that can give you a good idea.)

Some choice excerpts from Tom’s article:

It’s hard to convey with brevity the extraordinary experience of knowing and working with J.J. Abrams. First of all, is there anything in a name—J.J.? Look at the Jays we have now—Jay Leno, J. Lo, Jay-Z—but he’s got two Js. He was born to impinge and invade pop culture. Any person who has been exposed to his TV creations Alias or Lost has felt the rapture of his storytelling. He is a story dealer. He delivers what could be called the Lay’s of yarns: you can’t watch just one. I watched all of Alias’ first season in two days, pushing all aside to the near destruction of my personal and business life. I had to tear myself away…

From the very beginning, there was an insouciance that promised anything was possible. He’s a creative juggernaut and someone who recognizes the joy of creating.

Doesn’t Tom have someone that could have edited this for him? It’s terrible!

  1. I watched Letterman last night and Cruise was terrible. When he’s not hyper like on Oprah, he can’t find a natural voice and sounds like a broken record. He kept repeating the same things he said before “B & B.. Kate breastfeeds, I burp.. Suri has the same haircut I have” etc. None of it sounded real or natural. I can’t put my finger on it but he DOESN’T sound really excited or moved or tender towards this child. It was very odd and uncomfortable.

  2. Thanks for letting me know about that. I wish I could get US TV! Maybe he’s just really tired from jetting around so much, or maybe it’s not really his. Hopefully someone will post the interview online so I can see it.

  3. the oddest thing about it was that he kept saying the same things over and over and things he already said in interviews before, nothing new or unexpected. When asked about “Kate’s” labor, he was definitely uncomfortable and didn’t go into any details. He kept grinning like a maniac but felt muzzled. It’s like when he was talking about how “magnificent” Katie was at the time they met but wouldn’t talk about how they actually met. Bizarre.

  4. You have seriously piqued my interest now! I must see this interview. We know he interviewed Katie and several other women for the girlfriend role, and he was uncomfortable lying about it as you mentioned. Now he can’t say anything about the labor - that’s weird. Maybe he’s just not supposed to talk about it for Scientology reasons, or maybe there’s a more conspiratorial reason. He might not have been there, but there may be more to it than that. Weren’t there people at the hospital that saw him there? It’s all very strange.
