Queen Elizabeth hospitalized Sunday for gastroenteritis, she’s ‘in good spirits’

A week ago, we were getting down and dirty, knee-deep into our Oscar coverage. During the day, as I sat at the computer, my muscles (in my legs, mostly) were in spasm over and over and all of my joints felt particularly tender. I didn’t think much of it – I’m sore off and on throughout the week, partly because of my workouts and partly because (I think) of my sometimes weird sleeping positions (don’t ask). That day I also lost my appetite, which was weird (because I love to eat). Then on Tuesday, everything just went crazy with my body. Vomiting, fire shooting out a certain orifice, fever, exhaustion, all of it. I had gotten that stomach bug that’s been going around, and it was awful. It was 48 hours of misery.

Why am I bringing this up? Because Queen Elizabeth has been hospitalized with gastroenteritis, which is just a fancy name for exactly what I had. Which basically means poor Queen Elizabeth has fire shooting out of her royal bottom right now, and she’s probably really dehydrated (God knows I was too).

Queen Elizabeth was taken to the hospital Sunday, March 3 for gastroenteritis. After becoming ill on Friday, the 86-year-old monarch went to King Edward VII Hospital in London as a “precautionary measure,” a spokesman for the Queen tells the BBC.

“She was not taken into hospital immediately after feeling the symptoms,” the spokesman says. “This is simply to enable doctors to better assess her.”

Buckingham Palace says she’s “in good spirits,” and her engagements for the week will be canceled or postponed.

The Queen’s grandsons Princes William and Harry are currently in Switzerland attending Olympian Laura Bechtolsheimer’s wedding to Mark Tomlinson. William’s pregnant wife Kate Middleton was photographed resting her hand on her growing baby bump.

[From Us Weekly]

For the Queen’s sake, I hope the bug works itself out of her system quickly, although it doesn’t bode well if she got sick on Friday and they took her to the hospital on Sunday. That makes me wonder if her condition deteriorated. It makes me wonder if she got the full-blown stomach flu that sticks around for a few weeks. FYI: This winter has been one of the worst cold-and-flu seasons on record in America, and my guess is that with all of the international travel, the UK and the rest of Europe are probably all in a cold and flu cycle too.

As for the poor Queen’s schedule being canceled – as well it should. Better yet, make Charles, William and Harry take over the Queen’s public schedule.

    Aw. Good ol’ Bess.
Apparently she turned down an ambulance and worked right up until she went to hospital.
Yet Kate and William are tucked up in Switzerland. I know it’s for a wedding, but is an extended ski break afterwards really a necessary component?

  2. m says:

    Maybe Kate gave her Norovirus.
Other royals cant take over her schedule, they were all tailored to suit a monarch. Im sure she will complete them when she feels better.

  3. Miss so and so says:

I LOVE the Queen! She can do no wrong. I wish her a speedy recovery!

  4. GoodCapon says:

I believe her admission was merely a precaution than actual gastroenteritis. However with her advanced age I don’t blame them for going the ‘better safe than sorry’ route.

  5. butterymash says:

she’s been quoted as saying she doesn’t want any visitors, just that the other Royals continue their jobs…she truely is dedicated, shame it didn’t rub off on all of her decendants..but then every family has their workers and shirkers..

These stomach bugs can affect people differently. My house had it back in November. My youngest who is just a baby only puked twice and seemed good as new within a few hours. My husband puked once but felt awful for days (of course he is a man though and we all know how men dramatize being sick) but I was puking for days and days and oh god… it was just awful.

And this year has been horrific for bugs! We’ve had bronchitis, pneumonia, pink eye (youngest had it 6x in 3 months) some sort of coughing disease, influenza, a stomach virus and endless colds.

Remind me, if I ever in life have the occasion to visit, not to forget my gloves & face-mask.

  7. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

@Amelia. Why do Will & Kate need an extended break? I’ve heard Mustique can be VERY. Tiring.

    God Save the Queen!

  8. Beatrice says:

I love Queen Elizabeth. She is amazing. I don’t think anyone would begrudge her a light schedule at her age, yet she keeps on going full speed ahead. The number of events/travels that had to be cancelled due to her illness shocked me. Duchess Kate should be ashamed of her one engagement, one vacation, rinse, repeat, cycle.

  9. some bitch says:

Now I can’t stand the royals, but the queen is an exemption. She’s worked hard for years and I gotta admire her. Hope she gets better soon!

  10. ANGELIC 20 says:

while william and kate are taking an extended weekend .

i wish her all the best and may she go one to live a long life just like her mum. i can’t support a rf after queen and i think everyone in that family realizes that she is the only defense they have against the republicans.

I am not a staunch Royalist, but I don’t believe in abolishing the monarchy either as it provides security and a type of ‘back-up’ in the case that there is instability/ crisis in government, which is reassuring.

The Queen, God Bless HRM, in all her years of service has put the country ahead of her personal and private life/decisions, always. Never once shirked her duties, absolutely committed herself. She has effectively committed herself to being a civil servant throughout her life, and I genuinely believe that the country will feel her loss. May God bless her with good health and joy.

She worked right up to the last minute, refused an ambulance and insisted that there be “no fuss” – even at her age, she just keeps pushing herself. She is well past retirement age, she should be vacationing and relaxing. Inspirational and strong woman – Get Well Soon M’aam!

“…make Charles, William and Harry take over the Queen’s public schedule.”

    THIS.

  13. Sachi says:

My Dad, who really doesn’t care about the royals so he has no idea how abdication works, keeps on saying that the Queen should retire and give Charles a chance. He said the Queen has been hogging the spotlight for too long and Harry should be King after Charles because at least Harry is not yet bald like William. 😀

It will never happen, sure, but sometimes I wish the Queen can actually take it easy and leave the work to the younger royals. She is 86 years old and she has been such a fine example of a royal whose life has been dedicated in service of her country. Prince Philip also needs to take it easy.

Here’s hoping to a fast recovery for HM!

I love The Queen. Hope she feels well again soon.

  15. Izzy4Ya says:

Great way to get out of having to go to Rome in light of the mess down there. I don’t even blame her, lol.

  16. Thinker says:

    God Save The Queen!

Good hopes for a speedy recovery.

  17. bluhare says:

Just read she went home, so I wonder if it wasn’t just for some IV fluids and observation to make sure she wasn’t getting worse. I’m glad she wasn’t.

She’s 86 years old, and I would not bet against her still being on the throne at 96. Looks like she’s got her mother’s tough genes!

  18. KellyinSeattle says:

I love the Queen, too! She’s fun to follow/watch, with all her clothes and aristocratic ways – heaven forbid she goes out without her matching hat. And the pearls….love it. I had a guy friend who loved the Queen so much and dressed up like her for Halloween…but nobody else can do her justice.

  19. Rita says:

Gas is not going to keep a good woman down….trust me on this.

  20. Amberguesa says:

I hope you’re feeling better. That flu is a nightmare. I couldn’t believe how awful I felt. I’m changing my name to Lolabellavie

  21. Reece says:

Just have to say before I go off is when I saw this on the news yesterday my first thought was “NOOO Will & Kate SUCK!” Then they said that she is doing better so Phew…

  22. LAK says:

I hope she takes it easy from now on. She’s 86. We’ll understand. She could do with a Mustique holiday. Ditto DoE.

  23. Really? says:

OMG how funny…i had gastro, too, this past weekend, but it didn’t make the news…seems kind of surreal to think that the Queen Mum and i were suffering the same sort of intestinal hell, at times uncontrollable and quite tricky…brings to mind the need for diapers in old age…how funny to think i had something in common with a queen..oh yeah, that’s right, she’s human, too…

  24. Nanea says:

QEII has been discharged already, and the pics that were on the site of my favorite newsmag looked as if she has been on one of her engagements.

    • bluhare says:

All I can say is I certainly didn’t look like that when I was recovering from it.

  25. molly says:

It’s a pity the Queen and Phillip don’t have more say in our this country (on its knees) is run. I think there would be a lot of changes and them two alone would stick up for the ENGLISH PEOPLE !! and get the country’s identity back again.

  26. Jay says:

Queen Liz is amazing. She’s worked constantly and tirelessly for 60 years. I really hope she ends up living as long as the Queen Mum did, because I’ll be terribly sad when she’s gone.
