Nicole Richie has a thing or two to say to moms who talk about boogers

Nicole Richie

These are photos of Nicole Richie at Paris fashion week earlier this month, and once again, I am marvelling at how she’s left former BFF Paris Hilton languishing in the dust. During their “Simple Life” days, Paris was kind of a big deal, and everyone just kind of looked at Nicole as the unkempt, somewhat funny sidekick. Now Nicole has completely remade herself with a fashion mini-empire, and she’s pretty stable with two kids and a family life and everything.

While there have been buzzings around Nicole and Joel having trouble while he’s away in Australia filming “The Voice,” I think they’re actually fine. In fact, Joel has been gushing about Nicole a lot lately by admitting he had to beg Nicole to date him, and he wrote a sweet letter: “Sometimes I keep it to myself and sometimes I can’t help myself and I gotta tell the whole world how much I love her. I feel like the luckiest man alive to have my wife and kids. When the world outside breaks me down, they build me back up. Hope everyone out there finds this kind of love.” Hmm. I have a feeling that if, say, a woman would have written that note, we’d find it suspicious, but with Joel it seems authentic, right? We’ll see.

Nicole recently appeared on Chelsea Handler’s show, and Chelsea asked her about motherhood stuff. In response, Nicole said she’s really not looking to have another kid anytime soon, and she’s also tired of how moms talk about everything that goes on with their kids. Here are some highlights:

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie is glad to be done with diaper duty. During an Apr. 23 appearance on Chelsea Lately, the Fashion Star mentor and mom to Harlow, 5, and Sparrow, 3, revealed she’s not sure she’s ready for a third child.

“You haven’t had a baby in forever. What’s your problem?” host Chelsea Handler joked. “Are you being selfish right now?”

Richie fired back, “I’m just chillin’. Let me just chill! I really like that they’re doing their own thing. They’re at school until 3. I don’t have to, like, look after them — or even think about them! It’s like every other day.”

When asked point blank if she wants to expand her family, Richie replied, “I don’t know.” Unlike some mothers, Joel Madden’s wife said she’s not one to brag about her kids’ every attribute. “They want to talk about their spit-up and how cute their boogers are. I try to not be that mom,” she explained. “I know what is really cute and what I only think is cute.”

The former “Simple Life” star is enjoying some free time now that her children are becoming more independent. In fact, Richie recently went on a childless vacation with a group of friends (including fellow mother of two Jessica Alba). “Everyone left their kids at home,” the 31-year-old House of Harlow designer said. “It worked out great.”

[From Us Weekly]

I agree that, in general, moms tend to give too much TMI about their kids, and I try really hard not to fall into that trap, but it happens sometimes. Also, I can totally understand why Nicole might be relishing her private time at the moment and why she’d be reluctant to give that up for another baby. Babies are so much work, and it’s great that Nicole can admit she’s probably not willing to deal with diapers again. Honesty!

    She looks really skinny, again.

    • Apples says:

Yup. Also, I don’t like her fake nails- they look like Lee Press On Nails.

      • Mia says:

Lol, I’m sure they’re fake too, but idk, I like the stiletto nails look, it’s very high fashion and reminiscent of pointy nails in the 1980’s.

      • ya says:

That’s kind of the intention actually – they’re meant to be reminiscent of that 80’s style (like the Lee Press ons)!

I think the press on nails are back in style too!

    • Jan says:

I saw her on Chelsea Lately and she is WAY too skinny. There is a thin line (no pun intended) between looking healthy/fit/thin and just looking too skinny. She’s looking like a bobblehead again. What a shame, I thought she had left those days behind…

    • Nicolette says:

Yes she is. She was looking really good for a while, and looked so much healthier with a few more pounds on her.

    • Dinah says:

Rather Nancy Regan head-on-a-stick-like, indeed. Love the coat, though.

    • novaraen says:

My thoughts exactly! When I first looked at her I almost didn’t recognize her because she looks so sickly. Plus her comments about not having to do look after her kids, “like every other day” makes no sense and sounds like she really doesn’t care too much about them. Just my take on her comments. They sound so cold and uncaring. I don’t know a single mom who doesn’t like to talk about their kids.

      • Cletus says:

I can only speak for myself here, but sure- I like to talk to my kid. I also like her to GET OUT OF MY FACE sometimes. Unless you have been subjected to the ramblings of small children, I’m sure that sounds horrible. But it’s like they’re tiny crazy people, they don’t make any sense half the time. Also they are just learning to speak, and after a while I just wanted her to SPIT IT OUT ALREADY, DAMN. Of course I couldn’t do my kid that way, so I did my best to be patient. And small children totally crap themselves sometimes, too- and they eat shit they found on the ground. It really is nice to be able to give ’em to someone else for a while. I knew my daughter was in good hands and that she was safe- it sis not hurt my feelings to turn over the reins. Just saying. I’m not a big fan of Nicole Richie, but I can totally relate to what she said. Just saying.

      • bridget says:

She said her kids are in school every other day(so like 2-3 days a week) and I dont know a single mom that doesnt relish that time.

    • Sarah says:

Agree she is looking too skinny. For someone like her who used to have an eating disorder, this worries me. I hope she is alright.

  2. Dave says:

She’s a way cooler mum than most other celebrities who think the sun shines out their kids’ arses!

No child benefits from being so highly praised… she sounds more down to earth.

Plus everyone hates those facebook mums who post every single action their kid makes seeming amazed that they created such a talented human….

    • littlestar says:

Lol, I agree. I just posted below that I don’t understand the oversharing of some peoples kids on Facebook :).

    • jaye says:

Agreed to the 10th power! I have a friend who, hand to the heavens, posts new pics of her kids every day. Every day! I don’t begrudge anyone the right to want to share pics of their kids, but posting pics every day is excessive, imo.

    • Hakura says:

Heh. I’m just glad Facebook wasn’t around when I was little. This year in my 27th birthday card from my grandmother, I received a photo of myself at 3, sitting on the ‘big girl potty’, looking at them like ‘are you really taking a picture of me here?’. *facepalm* Yeah, I want the world to see my bare behind on a toilet. xD

My mother wasn’t that type at all, but my aunt & grandmother… I was like my aunt’s ‘shared’ child, so I could see her being that overly enthusiastic. xD

  3. oliveo says:

I covet Nicole Richie’s wardrobe. Not so much her husband’s rainbow hair as seen on The Voice… but definitely her wardrobe.

  4. JL says:

    Finally,

A Celebrity mom just telling it like it is!

  5. Diane says:

    My god, she looks half-starved.

    • stinky says:

maybe a little extra dieting, in anticipation of the trip to Paris, fashion-week, clothes shopping etc? prolly no biggie. (sez me)

  6. Dante says:

While i am not really a fan i think she looks really great. She is a world away from Paris and her 20 year old boytoy and the clubbing. Its funny how that turned out.

    • Me Three says:

Wouldn’t take much to be a world away from her former buddy Paris. But, really, who is Nicole Ritchie? Why is she famous? She’s famous for being a former party girl and I’m sorry I find her a vapid and totally uninteresting person.

And, she’s most definitely still has an eating disorder. That girl is skin and bones.

  7. Great advice! I just had my first and only baby last year and Im hoping I have not done that…..I have never been a big baby person and I still like to talk about interesting things. While its the best thing I ever did ( and almost didn’t do) it’s not the only thing important….I had a mom coffee date recently and all she wanted to discuss was all the greAt things her child could do, me I just said I wanted to keep her alive most days and have me time on the other days lol. We will. not be going out again….

oh forgot to add while I like her personality and what she had to say she looks like a anorexic little boy and really really needs to gain 10 to 15. and no one say she is naturally like that …bc that is not natural!!!!!!

    • Jo says:

Lmao at the “keeping her alive” nice to hear something besides “I devote my life to my children” my husband over indulges my stepson and it drives me nuts. Kids will not suffer if they aren’t being constantly entertained. I get exhausted just watching them together. My kids will know the difference between play time and alone time.

    • tripmom says:

Actually, some people are naturally like that, and it is just as rude to call someone too skinny as it is to call them too fat. I’m 92 pounds and can’t gain an ounce to save my life. Sorry we don’t live up to your standards. I’m sure your weight is just perfect.

      • The Wizz says:

tripmom I don’t think Nicole Ritchie falls into that category, if you’ll remember she was once upon a time quite a chubby little thing so she definately doesnt have a physical problem putting a few pounds on.

      • jes_sayin says:

Sorry, but this drives me crazy:

“just as rude to call someone too skinny as it is to call them too fat.”

Um sorry, NOT EVEN CLOSE. Would you rather be 350 lbs or 92 lbs??? (I’m a thinner person myself but it’s pretty hurtful to overweight people to say this stuff).

    • cheshire cat says:

      @carebear
i am 7 weeks away from my first (& probably only) baby & i feel the same way! never been a big baby person, not even quite sure what i’m getting myself into BUT i vow to not be THAT mom. esp on fb. yikes!

  8. Lauren Carter says:

I work at Nordstrom and I remember when she came for a special promotion for her House of Harlow line. I was so excited because I adore her style and H of H is actually really well-designed; but, she was an absolute horror. Very demanding and snippy and condescending to all the employees. It was completely the opposite of how I expected her to be; which was laid-back but full of snark.

    • oliveo says:

Noooo I don’t want to kick her out of my circle of pretend celebrity friends… what a bummer

      • bunny says:

Maybe she was too hungry to be nice?

        . . . I’m only half joking . . .

Feed the girl a snickers or something.

      • Lauren Carter says:

Lol she is extremely tiny so maybe she was starving. But I’m sure she wouldn’t have deigned to eat at the Nordstrom cafe.

      • littlestar says:

Awwww that’s disappointing that she’s a beyotch in real life :(.

Side note, I love the Nordstrom café! I live in Canada, so whenever my sister and I get the chance to travel to the States together, we always make a special point of shopping at Nordstrom’s and then having lunch there :).

    • Mia says:

That’s sad, because I always loved her sense of humor, but not completely shocking, because she did grow up around a bunch of entitled and bratty celebutantes.

    • skyler1 says:

I always thought she came off as a snotty bitch. I love her style, though.

    • Lucy says:

How long ago was that? Maybe she’s changed! (Holds on to last hope.. I really like her!)

      • Lauren Carter says:

        In 2010

      • Sugar says:

I agree I can look past her being a bitch because I’ve always like her & was glad to see her pull it together unlike other girls from that era. When she was PH’s side kick everything was about Paris but I always liked Nicole better.

    • Happymom says:

She’s always seemed like a complete bitch-so I’m not surprised at all. She’s been a spoiled LA princess her entire life-and she certainly has never given off any kind of sweet vibe.

    • bns says:

It’s not surprising. She’s a spoiled, rich LA girl who used to be best friends with Paris Hilton. Lainey said that Nicole mean girled her at some event not that long ago.

Becoming a mom doesn’t automatically make someone a good person.

      • Sarah says:

She had a guest role on the TV series “Chuck” a few years back where she totally played a mean girl character Chuck’s girlfriend’s past. It was very funny. Too bad if she’s like that in real life.

    • lucy2 says:

I can’t say I’m surprised to hear she’s bitchy, but at least it’s better than the drugged out brat she used to be. I guess?

I love the Nordstrom’s cafe too!

    • Asdfg says:

The only time i’ve seen her on video/tv was years ago during the “The Simple Life” reality seasons! I know the show was scripted and all I just get a feeling it was still their true personalities deep down.. Spoiled HW bitches! 😛 Who the hell would agree to “pretend” to treat people like shit for entertainment?

I agree with the majority that she has great style but as for her personality? Hmmm…..

    • Tiffany :) says:

I have known several people who have worked with her and they say the same thing. She is a “mean girl” in the truest sense of the word.

I dont’ think her fashion is all that great. She was horribly styled until Rachel Zoe told her what to wear. She isnt cute, she isn’t talented, she isnt’ nice….what is there to like?

  9. lucy2 says:

I give her credit, she’s turned it around and made a respectable life for herself. Paris only looks even worse in comparison.

Did you guys ever see the blog STFU Parents? It’s hilarious, and calls out the parents who tirelessly chronicle their kids every booger on facebook.

    • Anna-fo-Fanna says:

Yes. THIS. I was just coming here to plug STFU, Parents! Hilarious isn’t even the word. Love that site.

    • Mia says:

That blog is beyond hilarious! And even when the Simple Life started and vapid Paris was the more famous of the two, I always found Nicole more interesting. She’s always had a really sarcastic and kind of witty sense of humor.

    • JenD says:

I just googled the blog to check it out, and to my delight, there’s also a STFU couples. There goes my afternoon…I’ll be lost on the Internet all day now.

  10. Karen says:

She’s so tiny. She barely is as tall as the guys shoulder next to her.

  11. Maggie says:

    She looks adorable!

  12. littlestar says:

I absolutely ADORE AND LOVE Nicole’s style!! I consider her to be one of my “style icons” (along with Stacy London and one of my close friends lol). Her style is just so unique and she always looks incredible.

Anyway, I kind of agree with her. Talking about your kids is fine, but some women do go overboard. Especially on Facebook. There’s no need to post everything single thing your kid has done. But then again, I’m a cat lady, so I don’t understand the need to share your kids photos online lol.

  13. Mia says:

I totally agree with Nicole. I adore children but when parents talk about something disgusting or bratty their children do as though it’s cute, I can’t help but roll my eyes. I also L-O-V-E Nicole’s nails and her clothing. I just wish she’d gain some weight.

  14. mkyarwood says:

She looks like coke death again.’I don’t have to, like, take care of them.’ I enjoy my ‘freedom’ when kiddo is in school too, but, uh, I still think about her. Maybe that’s just me.

    • Kezia says:

Yeah I found that line strange too, surely you don’t forget about your kids when they’re in school- like they’d be on your mind in one capacity or another. She sounds like she’s not crazy about being a stay at home mum!

      • Jayna says:

Nicole has always had that dry humor and delivery. Maybe the way she said it, kind of tongue-in-cheek, didn’t come off on paper the same way.

    • Lulu.T.O. says:

And the part about it seeming like a ‘normal day’? So every day for the past 5 years hasn’t been normal?

  15. guilty pleasures says:

What I find annoying (and, yes, I am a parent) is that every single parent thinks their child is the second coming of sheer brilliant perfection. I was listening to a radio show the other day and a professor of something or other was gushing about how amazingly insightful his daughter was and how she taught him something with her every utterance, then he played a clip of her amazingness, yup-typical drivel from a 4 year old, not funny, not inspired, not new or unusual, just pandering and actually embarrassing, while also managing to be boring.
Parents, your child is 99% likely average.
    Now MY children…… 😀

  16. j.eyre says:

I love her look in that 3rd photo with the black and white dress. She looks incredible.

  17. Earth to Kelly says:

I actually don’t really care for Nicole. She was funny back in the day, much more entertaining than Paris Hilton ever was. But it seems like as soon as she lost weight she stopped talking, like “I’m thin now so I don’t have to have a personality”. I never see her smile. I remember seeing her as a guest on ANTM once, and when she talked, she seemed was so bitchy. . I remember she actually tried to start trouble between two girls, and she totally came off like a stupid high school bully. And this was after her transformation. . She does have great fashion sense, though.

  18. Nev says:

    LOVE NICOLE!!!!

Her jokes on Simple life has me crying from laughter!!! Her rawness is incredible!!!! Also she looks banging!!!!!

  19. judyjudy says:

To me she has always come across as rat-faced and mean.

  20. Aqua says:

She sure has come a long way, clean, sober, terrific family and a great career.I have a lot of respect for her for turning herself around. The difference between her and PH is like night and day.

  21. annie says:

Gone back and forth on Nicole for a long time. Glad to hear that Nordstrom tale. It does fit. She is another entitled selfish bitch asking us the humble peasants to lay at her feet.

  22. bns says:

Why is she on television? Why is she famous? Good for her for turning her life around, but meh.

  23. ParisPucker says:

wonder what her height and weight is. she def has an eating disorder – just hope she can stay healthy despite her body dismorphic issues.

    • Stuart Horsely says:

I don’t think the issue is food; it’s drugs. And I’ve got to wonder about someone who tweets, “I’m like, so pretty.” I mean really. She was featured in an article about dumb celebrity tweets. *shakes head*

  24. yeahright says:

“I’m not one of those moms”

    Eyeroll.

I love when women have a baby, gush about how amazing it is, then when the kid’s in preschool/school they’re all like “what baby? I’m not a mom. I’m sexy. I’ve got a job.”

  25. Isa says:

I’m totally guilty for over sharing. But it’s less about bragging and more about the funny stuff they do. I’m sure I get on some people’s nerves, but I have others tell me they love reading my stuff because it makes them laugh.
If its annoying hide they can always hide it from their feed.

  26. kim says:

Am I the only one that rhinks her skin looks dead and she looks kinda strung out?
    Cute clothes but a
    Pill popper?

  27. Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

Of course Nicole is a bitch. You don’t get as far as she has with absolutely zero talent without crushing some people along the way.
Remember years ago when she and Paris “broke-up”? Paris said “Nicole knows what she did and that’s all I’m ever going to say about it”. Which suggests to me that Nicole was plotting against Paris and got caught. This was when Paris was at the height of her fame and power. Nicole didn’t care–she was going to win at any cost, and so far, she is!
So yeah, she’s a bitch. She has to be.

    • anon says:

I think same applys for Fashion star. Undercutting others on the show.. you can see & feel tension

    • Dee says:

Oh please, paris can mean girl with the best of them. Her and that brandon davis character are notorious for being vapid, racist and entitled. They bullied and mocked lindsay lohan and mischa barton when they were in their teeens.
I dont even care about nicole but lets not pretend Paris is some nice person. I am sure whatever nicole did Paris had it coming.

    • bridget says:

Are you really tryint to make Paris Hilton into a symoathetic party? Really?

I’m not a Nicole fan, but its clear that those 2 broke up because Nicole fled from that disgusting parasite. By the way, the rumor is that what Nicole did was have a showing of Paris’ s sex tape at a party.

  28. Carolyn says:

I imagine Nicole would be extremely hard work to be friends or in a relationship with.

Joel is just radiating coolness, happiness, energy & fun on this season of the Voice. Maybe he’s happy to be away from her?

  29. Quinn says:

I don’t believe she’s sober for a minute. And, I somehow doubt she forgets the kids only during school hours.

    • Cinderella says:

I agree with you 100%. And it wouldn’t surprise me if this was causing problems at home.

      • Dee says:

I dont think so. Joel wouldnt stay with her that long and marry her if that was the case. Joel is not into that life style at all.

I am not a fan of nicole, i am quite sure she is bitchy to anyone she considers beneath her but i just dont think there is any evidence of problems at home like this article says.

  30. Grace says:

Even being adopted did not cure this kid of the Escovedo coke-lovin curse. She’s going off the rails again.

  31. Jayna says:

Nicole has tremendous style. She rarely makes a misstep on her outfits. She really has a look and knows what works for her, a very classic style. She has dropped a little too much weight again, though. She’s getting that fragile look and too big head look. Though she’s not as bad as she once was, which reminds me, I watched Rachel Zoe’s show last night. It’s sad how waiflike she is at 41. She was trying on lots of dresses for her book cover shoot, and how she thinks she looks good I will never know. She looked like an 11-year-old skinny little girl’s body. But I have to say Rachel’s little boy is gorgeous.

Nicole had two babies young. She would be silly to have another one too soon anyway. Let her have a little freedom again. I don’t know why she’s being asked anyway. She has plenty of time to have another one.

She was funny a while back about her husband. She said she would rather sleep than have sex at night, because she’s up so early with the kids, that she is boring and goes to bed early because she craves sleep.

  32. Deedee says:

She’s made some rough comments in the past. Apparently was jealous of hiliary duff back in the day and would make snide remarks about her to Madden even though I think it had been at least 1 year she had been with Madden and I think duff had moved on, too. It was either her or Paris who also made some derogatory remark about peanut butter sandwiches and how they loved those poor white sandwiches. And madden can say all he wants about Nicole, but he did say one time that he was thinking of lifting up with her after her DUI and her driving down the wrong side of the highway. It was only because she got pregnant and got straight that he stuck around. While I give her a lot of credit for turning her life around, she really sounds like she’s lonely.

  33. RdyfrmycloseupmrDvlle says:

Feh…..yes, shes a total Bi*ch. I have no idea how Joel tolerates her. To me I see Faye Resnick 2.0 Redux.

  34. Crackberry says:

    FINALLY!
I’m female and i HATE when women talk about their children like they have nothing else in their life
male celebrities don’t have entire articles about their children

  35. skuddles says:

    Heroin chic… without the chic.

Am I the only one who thinks she’s back on drugs??

  36. Vickyb says:

I love that coat, but I’m not a fan of what she said. I’ve got an 18mo daughter and, yes, it can sometimes feel like a respite when I go to work but… forget about her? No. I love her, and I genuinely miss her. It’s not easy all the time, but she’s my child and I enjoy spending time with her. She makes her child sound like one of those little puppies she used to be so fond of – adorable in short doses, but mainly looked after by kennels or staff. I think her comments are worrying, and they’re all over the damn internet – ‘Mummy, do you really forget about me when I’m not there?’ What an erosion of a child’s security and anchor of importance in their parent’s life.

People ‘overshare’ because life with a little person involves spending most of the day with them. Add the tidal wave of love, and it becomes obvious why people want to share these pictures – they’re sharing their life. If someone spent 20 hours a day playing tennis, and they really loved it, chances are they’d be holding a racquet in most of their pictures…

  37. Ryan says:

I really admire Nicole. And I thinks she’s SO pretty.
