Luke Evans, not Tom Hiddleston or Alex Skarsgard, was cast in ‘The Crow’

Well, we might as well discuss this. After flirting with the idea of casting two fan-girl-pleasing actors for the role in The Crow remake, the production has now cast an actor with very little fan-girl approval. Tom Hiddleston and Alexander Skarsgard were allegedly in the running for the role of Eric Draven, to carrying degrees. It sounded like Hiddles really wanted the part and producers weren’t all that keen on him, and that producers really wanted Skarsgard but he wasn’t all that into it. Now the part has been cast! Welsh actor Luke Evans is your new Crow. WHO?

The Crow will fly with Welsh actor Luke Evans playing the title role in the F. Javier Gutierrez-directed franchise reboot for Relativity Media. Evans was the original choice, but he has been incredibly busy.

He was just cast as the lead in Dracula Year Zero, he is the villain in Fast & Furious 6 and is Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Evans seemed to be unavailable because of production on Dracula and promotion on The Hobbit.

The distributor looked at Tom Hiddleston and more recently Alexander Skarsgard, the latter of whom has a bunch of offers after Warner Bros halted Tarzan. Ultimately, they have decided to push the start date to early next year to accommodate his schedule in order to secure Evans, who is currently promoting the release of Fast 6. So hey junket guys, be sure to ask him about it. They are now in negotiations and I expect the deal to make. He seems an ideal fit for the role originated by Brandon Lee, who died tragically during production on the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed revenge story based on the James O’Barr comic book series.

[From Deadline]

Yeah. I don’t know, I can’t see how Luke Evans was the first choice especially when compared to the flurry of interest that Skarsgard and Hiddleston would have generated. I had to look up Luke’s IMDB to see if I had ever seen him in anything – he’s been in The Immortals, Clash of the Titans, The Three Musketeers, and The Raven. I think the only thing I’ve seen with him is Tamara Drewe, and I do remember thinking that he was really cute in that. He could have something of a “young Clive Owen” vibe, only… somehow not so sexy. So, what do you think? The producers chose him because Alex Skarsgard refused the part and no one thought Hiddles was capable?

Hm. I didn’t mind Hiddles in the role. I get the whole “casting an unknown” thing (actually, I don’t) but this seems a little budget.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I think this is boring, safe casting. Meh. Hiddles would have done something emotionally interesting, but I get why they wouldn’t cast him if the look is so all important. Again, I think remaking this film is a very bad idea.

    • Anna says:

See, this is a perfect casting match for me. Dont care for the movie, dont care for the dude. It’s (likely) gonna bomb and it’s not gonna matter.

      • Micki says:

        LOL, so true.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

Unless this film has an extraordinary writer, it is going to tank no matter who they cast. I can’t believe Hiddles wanted this so badly. I think it would have been career suicide.

      • Anna says:

        @C&C

I still havent figured out his game plan. On the one hand, he wants the stardom and the fame (it def looks like it and I have no inherent problem with that); on the other he is an Actor and he likes his passion projects. Maybe Crow was one of those? Either way, his whole strategy is a bit bipolar.

      • MissThing says:

I’m still not unconvinced that Hiddles is a tad manic-depressive (i.e. bi-polar light). It would explain so much.

I don’t see this other actor doing the part enough justice and I fear it is going to bomb. Tom may not have been able to save it, but at least we know he would have thrown his entire being into the part and there would be tears.

This guy makes me sad. Not him, but I remember he was out & proud – and when he got cast in Clash of Titans, he was put back into the closet. So sad that this guy has to hide who he is in order to gain Hollywood stardom. Having said that, I think this is a great choice for The Crow.

    • rashers says:

I expect he will trott out a “girlfriend” any day now. He has been in high profile films but never headlined something truly big. Last time he was in something that drew attention to his orientation, he started “dating” a publicist (who continued to post about singlehood on her facebook page)

Reading his old interviews you wouldnt think it was the same guy. That guy was so proud about being Out! And so deliciously open (the guy talks about his gay porn collection and this is a decade before gay rights took off).

I dont care about the film but i cant wait for the promotion tour. This will be interesting!

    • lee says:

Agreed. His old interviews definitely seem like they are from a completely different (and far more interesting) person. So sad.

I had hopes that he might be able to position himself as the first out action star, but he seems to have just allowed the machine to shove him back into the closet. 🙁 Granted, I’ve never really seen him in anything, so maybe he’s not that great in his roles anyways.

    • Bullcrapspotter says:

Thats bull crapp the best thing anyone could do in Hollywood is say they’re gay..If you want to be successful pretend to munch carpet or take it up the poop shoot and your face will be on every magazine on every talk show and every place else noone wants to see it probably on the back of a bathroom door stall while theyre trying to take a dump. Hello Jason Collins…. so if you want the opposite to happen say something against gay people or say you are a christian than youre outta here kid, is what youll hear.

      • MissThing says:

I don’t care if the dude is gay or not… can he act. That is all that matters. To me.. he is meh.. ok in that department.

      • rashers says:

I hate your phrasing but you have a point. The first gay male action star to come out will be swimming in offers and free positive press for a long time. Coming out is actually a great career move at this point. Makes you standout.

  3. elceibeno08 says:

He’s hot! Look at those compelling bedroom eyes. He must be a good screw.

  4. layla says:

Isn’t that the guy who tried to jump back in the closet when his career took off?

    • mom2two says:

      Why, yes it is.

If Alex did turn down the part, good for him. Hiddleston can get better then The Crow.
I don’t care who is The Crow..it’s a movie that shouldn’t be remade.

Luke Evans does not interest me in the least.

  5. Nicole says:

Better to cast a relative unknown into an iconic, hit or miss role. Easier for the audience to suspend their disbelief watching him as the character and easier for the studio to blame him if the remake sucks.

    • Tig says:

You are so right! By appearances, this guy really invokes the original actor. Alex is really trying hard to leave Eric behind- notice his two upcoming indies are anti-sexy, or at least, not focusing on the “bod”. Guess that’s why he and Tarzan parted ways- everyone would see Eric in a loincloth!

  6. Mew says:

Ou au, he’s so hot. No idea about the movie, but I could stare him all day and night.

  7. Amanda says:

Well, I don’t think the movie needs to be remade at all, so you’re asking the wrong person her. Brandon Lee 4 Eva.

  8. eliza says:

I’d rather they leave the movie alone and not do a remake. Brandon Lee was perfect in that role and while I know movies are always remade in spite of an actor passing, this somehow seems unnecessary.

Can’t Hollywood come up with anything new?

  9. Lolly says:

He was Zeus in Immortals & he has the talent of making a Greek God seem as compelling as a bag of wet hair

    • amilu says:

Haha! I’ve never seen him in anything, and his photos don’t excite me in the slightest.

  10. grabbyhands says:

Unless they get a writer ready to do justice to the graphic novel, I think they shouldn’t film this at all. The first movie was bad enough.

  11. Ashling says:

I think you are right about why Luke was cast. I don’t believe he was always first choice. I actually like Luke. I think it’s too bad for him about having to hide his sexuality, but I don’t hate him for it. I think Alex and Tom will be glad they weren’t in this movie.

  12. Luciana says:

I am so against this remake that I’m actually glad it’s someone I do not know. That way I won’t feel bad when it crashes and burns.

  13. madpoe says:

I’m against the remake! I like Luke since “The Immortals”, but this film does not need to be redone. Brandon Lee. The end!

  14. Feebee says:

Well I’m glad that’s settled then.

  15. flower says:

Glad Tom’s not doing it, and it should not be remade anyway.

  16. Diana says:

Wow. What a completely boring choice. What are the producers thinking? I’m not a huge fan of either Tom or Alex…but at least they seemed like interesting, more inspired choices.

Considering the low budget casting, I’m guessing this will be direct to dvd.

  17. xxx says:

Once his part in The Hobbit movies is shown, I expect his profile will be a lot bigger. He has the true “hero” part of that story, much like Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings movies.

    • icerose says:

hardly a lead role and carries no were near the weight of the Aragorn role.

    • icerose says:

I have never heard of Luke and his CV is pretty thin-some sights are saying both Hiddleston and the vampire actor distanced themselves in the end.I think the best outcome would have been McAvoy or Hiddleston because they are amazing actors and always bring something different to a role. But McAvoy is fully booked,Tom has two more interesting films coming up and is returning to the stage this year as well.,There have been so many tales re the casting/director/writer changes within this film that you kind of wonder if they really know what they are doing.

  18. blenheim says:

He. Is. So. Hot. I don’t care how 100% gay he is. Ooo skit skit g-d damn!
