Unwilling Jamie Lynn Spears airport decoy asks LAXPD for $2 million

In September there was a mild controversy over an incident in which cops used a young attractive woman in sunglasses who was departing the same plane as Jamie Lynn Spears to divert paparazzi away from the star. Jamie Lynn Spears and her newborn baby Maddie left the airport from the tarmac while the other woman was used as a decoy. There was an internal investigation at the LAX police department afterwards as cops had acted out of order by providing special services for a celebrity.

The woman who served as the fake Jamie Lynn Spears is demanding a $2 million settlement from the LAX police department under threats that she’ll sue. Adessa Eskridge says through her lawyer that she was whisked away by police once she got off the plane and had no idea what was going on. She was then surrounded by paparazzi and had her face plastered all over the news and the Internet. Eskridge claims that her privacy was also invaded as her name, phone number and address were leaked to some reporters who actually contacted her. She likens it to a false arrest and claims she suffered “great humiliation” after the “demeaning and traumatic ordeal.” She’s willing to deal with it though, if the LAX police department coughs up $2 million for her pain and suffering:

I represent Adessa Eskridge… On September 10, 2008 by client was singled out by the LAX police to be part of a ruse to protect Jamie Lynn Spears. We are not yet aware of whether or not Ms. Spears or her agents were involved in the ruse. Our client was not given any details as to the nature of the task or of the potential danger involved. She simple followed the instructions of the police as most good citizens would do.

Ms. Eskridge had no idea and was never informed that upon deplaning, she would be mobbed by the paparazzi, that she would be in fear of her well-being, that her picture would be taken, that video of her would be all over the world wide web as well as being played and replayed on TMZ…

She was deceived and manipulated by the LAX-PD and suffered and continues to suffer great humiliation. Since this demeaning and traumatic ordeal ensured, our cilent’s name and identity, phone number and home address has been leaked to some media outlets. She has been contacted by members of the media demanding an explanation of her “role” in the ruse and her connection with the Spears family, among other things…

Our client intends to file a lawsuit if this matter is not resolved satisfactorily. At this time, she is willing to consider a reasonable and fair settlement that fully compensates her for the humiliation, fear and harassment that she has been subjected [sic] at the hands of LAX-PD. It is demanded that LAX-PD pay the sum of $2,000,000.

I understand that sometimes the only way to get things done in the US is to threaten to sue, but $2 million is hardly “reasonable and fair.” Maybe they set the figure high and are hoping for six figures at least. Cops shouldn’t have grabbed this woman without her consent and it was wrong that they forced her to go through this scenario without telling her what was going on. It was blip on the media radar though and surely this woman is making her brief exposure to the public worse by suing. Maybe she’ll get some cash out of it though and won’t have to work for a while.

The letter from Eskridge’s lawyer, below, is dated September 30, but it has just been made public for some reason. Credit: Splash News Online

This is getting ridiculous!! and 2 millions for this?!!! $200 is more like it..

  2. geronimo says:

Regardless of her and her laywer’s motivations here, how bizarre and unprofessional are the LAX PD? To not ask her permission or explain what it was they wanted her to do?? If that were me, I’d sue that crap out of them.

  3. CiCi says:

if she is completely clueless as to what is going on – why does she appear totally in the know? why is she not freaking out, looking around, going “what is happening?!!!” If 20 paps and police suddenly surrounded me upon deplaning, I wouldn’t be quietly walking with my head down.

  4. Leandra says:

She deserves something but not 2 Mill. I don’t blame her for sueing. No one should control another person like that and if it’s the Police you hardly have a choice but to comply.

  5. Larissa says:

How humiliating or physically harmful this could have been?
I am not a fan of the Spears bunch but, there was any physical evidence that she was hurt during the events?
Or how many jokes you can get from being used as a Jamie Lynn decoy? I can´t think of any really!
She had her 5 minutes of fame and now she is sueing? Now that is a joke!!!
Either if she was unaware of the task she was about to perform or not, I agree she is entitled to some form of compensation, but 2 million is waaaaay beyond the compensation line! Maybe a grand or so for her services, NOT from the LAX-PD but from Jamie Lynn´s part !!!! I reckon that would be decent enough!

She didnt want the fame and this is a good invasion of privacy case – she probably will not receive $2 Million, you just sue for a high number and hope for something reasonable – they will probably settle out of court for 6 figures. The only thing is, the LAX-PD can argue she was informed about the situation, her case is than weaken especially if she was someway compensated.

  7. Larissa says:

invasion of privacy? she was in a public place so it still applies? i really have no idea how this works but 6 figures is way too much!!!!
people who get wrong diagnoses get the same amount, so 6 figures would be not only inappropriate but ridiculous for this specific case!

  8. Cougar says:

Don’t tell me that she wasn’t loving getting that “celebrity treatment” while it was happening. I think she knew exactly what was going on the whole time. Besides – she could have said no.

  9. Alecto says:

She looked like she knew exactly what was going on and was enjoying it.

  10. kate says:

so let me get this straight: this chick just happened to be on the plane with jamie lynn, and when a group of security approached her and “whisked her off” through the airport (without saying a word to her, apparently)past hordes of paparazzi she just went with them? she didn’t stop and ask what was happening? ummm….sure, that’s believable.

    She deserves about $20,000

And the cops deserve to be suspended without pay for a month or so.

However, police contracts and police unions are such that police misconduct apart from actually beating someone to death, the actual officers never get any backlash.

The ONLY way to make the police think twice about this kind of thing is to make the department pay through the nose, so the department cranks on the heat for their officers to actually follow laws and procedures not just do what they want all drunk on power.

THAT is why I as a Juror I’d give her $2 million…it’s too bad that such awards end up coming out of the pocket of taxpayers, and it means that the department may not get all the new gear it needs, damaging the 95% of police who do try and do a good job.
