Jane Lynch is divorcing her doctor wife after three years of marriage

Well, this is depressing. Jane Lynch and her wife of three years, Dr. Lara Embry, are getting a divorce. Jane and Dr. Embry were together for several years before they got hitched too, and as Jane’s fame grew, she became more of a vocal proponent for gay marriage rights and gay rights in general. Lara Embry has a daughter too, and Jane was a step-mom to the girl. Ugh. This sucks.

Jane Lynch and Dr. Lara Embry have decided to end their marriage. A source close to the 52-year-old Glee actress confirmed the sad news to Us Weekly on Monday, June 10.

The insider told Us that Lynch recently moved out of their Laurel Canyon home in L.A.

Lynch and Embry, a psychologist, married in Sunderland, Mass., in June 2010, after meeting at a 2009 gala for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Embry, who is mom to daughter Haden Embry, told Vogue magazine in 2011 that it was love at first sight.

“I had stopped dating altogether. I mean, you have to sit down and think, ‘How do you trust your judgment?’ But I saw Jane walking in the lobby and I thought, ‘I’m supposed to follow her.’ It was like I’d been picked up in a fishing net,” Embry told the magazine. “I was supposed to go that way — and she was actually going the wrong way! But it was like the door was cracked. It was perfect.”

Lynch, who currently stars on Broadway’s Annie: The Musical, recently told Us that her stepdaughter is not that impressed by her role on Glee. “She’s so unmoved by that stuff,” she explained at FOX’s Winter TCA Tour in January. “It’s funny what kids accept kind of fast. She’s not at all in awe of the fact that her mother is on TV.”

Jane also released an exclusive statement to People Mag saying: “Lara and I have decided to end our marriage. This has been a difficult decision for us as we care very deeply about one another. We ask for privacy as we deal with this family matter.”

Several years ago, I remember reading an article in Time or Newsweek about the first wave of divorces from the gay community. Couples had gotten married in one of the states which allowed same-sex marriages, and then the couples returned home to a state which didn’t recognize their union, which led to a huge clusterwhoops when it came to filing for divorce and getting a judge to figure out custodial issues, financial issues and the like. I always remembered that article because there was one judge in Texas who decided that he would unilaterally hear divorce cases for same-sex couples, and he strove to treat the couples fairly, and he became a kind of model for other divorce judges in other states when the states didn’t recognize same-sex unions but wanted to help figure out divorce cases.

Anyway, this story is sad. I really thought Jane Lynch had it all figured out and that she was happy with her hot doctor wife. I guess that gay fairy tale is over.

According to the article, they had not been together for several years but met in 2009. Nevertheless, it is still sad and I wish them well.

I like JL, so this is sad. Hopefully it is a simple breakup and it doesn’t get sordid.

I never get all the hand wringing that comes with high profile gay divorces. And the inevitable rush to blame it on external pressures as if gay people dont sometimes make poor choices or change once in the marriage or just plain fall out of love. And both conservatives and liberals are guilty of this. All I see here is 2 middle aged people that should have known what they were getting into and been preapared to fight for it (unless there was abuse of any kind)

Yup. It’s still a huge bummer to see someone you like get divorced (esp when there are kids involved) Yet how is this different that every other high profile marriage that fails in Hollywood? I chalk it up to Jane being a actor, not some outside source.

Marriages in hollywood never seem to last. Straight/Gay/whatever- I don’t get the hand wringing either.

It`s so sad, but no matter if it`s a gay or straight relationship we`re human and can make more or impulsive decisions. Jane is so funny and so many really funny people are super depressed in their personal lives. I hope this isn’t the case.

That’s sad. Hope they are able to keep it amicable and move on.

  5. Amy says:

Peace to both of them and to their daughter/stepdaughter.

  6. Katie says:

It appears that no one, gay or straight, is able to respect the sanctity of marriage these days. At least they didn’t have a few children before deciding to divorce.

    • Emily C. says:

Hollywood celebrities have never exactly been good about respecting marriage. Actually, rich people in general, throughout history, have always been pretty rotten at it. It used to be that rich men were considered literally physically unhealthy if they didn’t have numerous affairs. And that’s not even starting on what rich Southern men did to slave women and their families.

For those of us living outside the celebrity/ridiculously wealthy bubble, marriage is doing just fine, as far as I can see.

    Aw….disappointing

Two of my friends went through the situation that Kaiser described. Together for ten years, got married in Canada, and divorced like 18 months later. It was a very messy situation and involved some property. I was actually really impressed that the one woman, who had a good deal of money, ignored her lawyer’s attempts to say that their marriage was invalid in California, which probably would have worked, and dealt fairly with her ex-wife.

    • LAK says:

there is a theory that if you marry too early or too late, divorce is inevitable within 18months of the marriage. Too early being the first 6months and too late being 7yrs + of dating. The theory goes on to say that the people who wait too late are trying to make a last ditch effort to save the relationship whereas the too early people are on an emotional high.

whether or not the theory is correct, it’s sad however it happens.

Free to marry. Free to divorce. Nothing to see here.

  10. Chordy says:

This is why marriage equality is such an important issue. It’s about divorce equality as well. Everyone deserves the same legal protections no matter who they are!

  11. Nerd Alert says:

I wish them the best, and I hope they don’t run into extra legal issues during a tough time. I really like Jane Lynch, but being gay doesn’t make her an exception to the Hollywood marriage curse. Most actors/musicians have to choose fame or love, that’s just how it appears to go.

  12. Lucinda says:

    That’s too bad.

  13. Dawn says:

“Doctor” is a little misleading. She’s a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. That means she has a Ph.D., but she’s not a medical doctor.

    • Bijlee says:

LOL yours is my favorite response.

      • Lucinda says:

She’s still addressed as doctor because she has a doctorate degree.

      • bijlee says:

        @Lucinda
…well aware of that. It’s exactly the type of doctor I want to become as well. Everyone is talking about their divorce and Dawn says something entirely different. That’s why I enjoyed her comment the most.

    gay fairy tale.

    Lol.
