For most of us, the idea of being filmed and photographed for public viewing in our underwear would land somewhere between public speaking and dying as grisly death as the things we’d least like to do. But for a Victoria’s Secret model, it’s all in a days work, and so is the dieting that goes with it.
Although she looked simply stunning at last year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, supermodel Karolina Kurkova has come under harsh criticism for her fuller-than-usual figure over recent months. The 24-year-old was unfairly blasted by the Brazilian media for her “cellulite and love handles” after walking in Sao Paulo Fashion Week in June, and was then harshly dubbed “too fat” by fashion critics following the lavish lingerie show in November.
Kurkova has told Tarts in the past that her diet is comprised mainly of fresh vegetables, salad and protein. But for several weeks leading up to last year’s Miami show, an inside source said that the supermodel cut carbs altogether, and worked out for hours in an effort to keep up with other super-slim Angels Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and Marisa Miller.
“She was exhausted and didn’t get down to where she wanted to be,” said the pal.
Apparently her weight woes may have more to do with a medical condition than with just a lack of willpower. According to an insider, Kurkova joins the ranks of 27 million Americans who suffer from the thyroid disorder hypothyroidism, which interferes with the body’s metabolism.
Fox adds that Karolina was kept off of press materials leading up to the show, in case she didn’t shift the weight.
I can see that, from Victoria’s Secret point of view, Karolina needs to be looking slim and cellulite free in order to have inspirational appeal and sell the underwear. They want people to be talking about how great their knickers look, not how fat the models are. ‘Fat’ being a subjective term. A fat model is actually a skinny adolescent in the real world. However, Karolina looked anything but fat at last years show.
If it is indeed true that Karolina keeps to a strict diet and models while battling a thyroid condition, she should be given a medal. Or at least be made head angel.

Yeah- she looks way better than that hideous thing they made her wear. She’s by no means fat at all- it’s just that she actually has flesh! What’s wrong with having flesh on your bones? And it’s nice, smooth, healthy-looking flesh. Lay off the poor woman (emphasis on the *woman*).

I’d be inclined to blame the lingerie. I think her body in the above pictures is gorgeous, but the fugly girdle thing would make anyone look like a mess.

That is not a fat woman, by any stretch of the imagination. Why do these fashion police people seem to think that if you aren’t anorexic you are overweight? Skinny is unattractive. A healthy, curvaceous woman is far, far more attractive than a bag of antlers!
I only WISH I could be “fat” like her!

Hmm: some Greco-Roman inspired elements in the robe and armbands, gone ADD with some Indiana Jones accessorization, and fucked up with some lingerie that got all stretched out when it was chucked in with the darks in the regular cycle.
Too bad there didn’t appear to be time for the horse vet to file down her teeth before the show either.

ha! exactly. there’s a biological reason why men like women with some curves.
I sometimes wonder if women are subconsciously trying to look more like men, whom they perceive as having the power, but of course need to be sexy too because to be desired by men is having power too…. whoa, ramble on…

Zoe- I think you may have something there (the subconcious desire to look like a man.) I don’t know why else boyish figures would be considered so attractive.
Karolina’s body looks great, but definitely more “real woman” than lingerie model. Maybe she shouldn’t be in that line of work if it’s so exhausting trying to fit the unrealistic standard?

thanks for claiming that made sense Heather, LOL - it’s the only thing that can explain this craze to be stick thin but have big fake breasts stuck on the chest…which rarely, if ever occurs in nature.

No Susan, hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland is underactive and fails to produce enough thyroid hormone. That hormone regulates numerous other functions, like metabolism. Some people may experience appetite loss, but that’s not the main symptom of the condition.

That’s a body I wouldn’t mind having. She’s soft, and soft is wayyy more appealing than these bony models with disproportionately large breasts. Not to mention, the models keep getting weirder and weirder looking anyway.

I can’t believe it’s on all the papers when she is clearly NOT fat. Karolina Kurkova’s looking great, probably one of the only healthy models in the fashion industry! Why enhance an unattractive beauty, the ‘beauty’ of size 0? She’s still slim. If that means she’s “too fat”, I wonder how real fat people would be considered. Absolutely disgraceful.

She used to have a 23 waist line now her waist is 25.. That is still pretty skinny dont u think??? And i remember tyra saying at an interview “victoria’s secret is the only one that never told me to lose weight”

Why do people like you seem to think that if you aren’t fat that you are anorexic?
You have to remember that just like some people can’t lose weight, some people can’t gain weight.

That is one of the rudest things I have heard. Beauty is subjective. Just because you think it’s unattractive doesn’t mean that others don’t. To each their own. I would refrain from making such absolute statements and in salvaging one group’s self esteem, you’re destroying another’s.
As for KK, for a runway, she was a little overweight and untoned when she wore that bikini. What I don’t understand is why VS is so hard on her, but Tyra’s fat a** was glorified.

She doesn’t look toned, the same problem as the pics from last year. If she’s modelling lingerie, then yes, the focus should be on the product not the model, and if her shape is distracting, criticism is inevitable.
And that has to be some of the ugliest, nastiest lingerie I have ever seen.
