Amy Adams in Valentino at ‘Man of Steel’ UK premiere: adorable or too cutesy?

Here are some assorted photos from last night’s European/London premiere of Man of Steel. I didn’t talk about this when I covered the LA premiere photos, but it feels like it’s been a really long time since a major “blockbuster” movie had its first premiere in LA. It used to be that the first premiere of most Hollywood movies were held in LA. Nowadays, they go to London, then they do a European tour for a week, THEN they do the promotional rounds in America. Which just goes to show you how important the foreign markets have become for Hollywood. It also shows you how much Superman is considered to be the most “American” of superheroes, so I guess they’re hoping for a big box office in America first and foremost.

Anyway, these photos are nice but I’m not blown away by anyone. Henry Cavill’s hair is still bugging me, but this suit is so much better than his ensemble in LA. He’s been wearing Tom Ford for the premieres, and Tom Ford gave him a much better suit for the London premiere. Amy Adams is wearing Valentino. It’s okay. Not my favorite, but it doesn’t suck. My least favorite thing is the headband – too cutesy.

As for the other men of Man of Steel – my Michael Shannon crush is becoming a big problem. Why isn’t he mine?! As for Russell Crowe… my God. I would STILL hit it like a house on fire. It’s something particular about Rusty… he just still does it for me.

PS… Still no Gina Carano. Huh.

What kind of surprises me is that HC doesnt look that big? CHarms would dwarf Any by comparison – she’s a petite girl. I’m also really not feeling HC’s sartorial choices on this promo tour so far. Too stuffy, too old. But Amy looks cute, if a tad boring. She can pull off so much more.

Henry looks stiff here but there are some really cute pictures floating around of he and Amy cracking up together. I think he relaxed as the night went on.

      • lucy2 says:

I’d imagine he’s nervous or feeling the pressure. This is his first major role, right? And it’s a huge budget, iconic franchise rested on him now.

I think they all look good. I feel like I shouldn’t like Amy’s dress, but I somehow do.

    • Anna says:

I really am talking more about the styling. Surely that have people who could have put him in a better suit – this one looks like the jacket is a tad too tight/too high-cut, the pants a tad wide…he looks constricted, more than anything. Otherwise I think he’s been carrying himself well.

  2. lower-case deb says:

is Michael Shannon in any way related to Willem Dafoe?

  3. Andrea says:

You are being too hard on them. They look great.

Amy looks beautiful here. She has the ability to capture vintage pretty in a way other women don’t. She maintains youth and FUN. Seriously. So many other celebs are so concerned with vamping it up. Amy isn’t afraid to just have fun and good around. I love the outfit.

Henry looks stiff here but there are other pictures floating around of he and Amy laughing under an umbrella that are pretty adorable. Honestly, I think Amy helps him loosen up. She gets him to relax.

Also – must disagree on Super being the most American superhero. First of all, That’s Captain America. Super is an alien to begin with. And thanks to Christopher Reeve’s portrayal, Superman became VERY international. HUGE foreign following. Reeve was a true international star, before these franchises started caring about international markets.

Before the recent Marvel movie mania that started with Spidey in 2002 (2003?), Super was probably the most internationally recognized superhero, alongside Batman.

    • Andrea says:

Superman is an international icon but he’s a distinctly American fairytale. He’s the closest we have to our own King Arthur or Robin Hood just as Lois and Clark are one of the famous love stories that belongs to us.

Superman was created by two Jewish men at the height of the Great Depression. He is the ultimate immigrant and mirrors the idea of being “othered” and adopting a new world as your home.

Lois has distinctly mirrored the feminist journey of the working career woman. Her struggles and pursuits have reflected the fight of American women in the workplace for 75 years. How do you get ahead as a woman in a man’s world? Can you fall in love? Can you have both love and career? Even motherhood?

The story resonates with everyone but the roots are distinctly American.

      • Anna says:

I agree with you on the origins. My original comment was spurred by Kaiser’s remark on the film’s marketing and international appeal. And in that context, Supey was already much better known globally than almost all other s-heroes.

Your country isn’t the only one with jews and women! Being from latinamerica; I’ve growed up eith all of your cultural icons without ever really thinking about their nationalities (we do joke about how every alien invasion on movies is on just one country) so no, as with batman, superman is a guy from the city, who speaks our language (kid’s stuff is doubed. Captain America on the other hand.. well, let’s just say that they couldn’t even begin to explain the name with the suit (America is a continent) not to mention what it implies (only the lives of people of one country matter to this “super” guy).

      • Andrea says:

@Carla, Whoa whoa. I never said that the story didn’t resonate with other cultures. In fact, I think I said outright that it did. That’s why the story is beloved worldwide.

I totally agree with you that these are themes that resonate with many different cultures.

My comment was only about the history of the character. He was created in Cleveland by the children of Jewish immigrants. Lois was directly influenced by the US feminist struggle.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t apply to other cultures and I never said it didn’t. Please don’t put words in my mouth.

I don’t know..I think the problem with Henry and his look is either he is trying to be Superman on the RC in a suit…or all the weight/muscle he gained for the role is still strange for him. I think he would be so much sexier if he was leaner. More trim. He just doesn’t seem comfortable in this body. It will be interesting to see what he looks like after the promotion for this is over and he does another project.

Superman is not at 60% at RT. I was surprised. but it will be a huge hit despite what the critics say.

regarding his GF… I think they don’t want a woman other then Lois next to him. They want women to be all about him so having him with a GF on the RC is not going to help.

  6. Samtha says:

I’m getting concerned about the lack of Gina. As much as I like Henry, she’s the hottest thing about him.

    • Andrea says:

To each their own. I really found them insufferable. I don’t care for her. So I’m not sad to not see her here.

  7. Bianca says:

    I think Amy looks gorgeous!

  8. Anname says:

He is very good looking, but I think the charisma is somewhat missing? He seems a bit blank to me.

  9. Deb says:

Oh My Russell still has it *swoon*. I’ve been crushing on him since Gladiator

  10. Sandra says:

I think the headband was a good idea, given the weather. The guys’ jackets are all covered in drizzle…we can’t see anything on her because her shoulders are bare, but I’m guessing she looked outside, saw that the weather was crap and decided to tie the whole thing back so it didn’t go insane in the, uh, rain.

Smart, although I’m not a fan of headbands. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look – I just get headaches within about five minutes of slipping one on. My. whole. life.

  11. Feebee says:

Maybe I’m spoilt by the way some other guys like Hiddleston carry off a three piece suit but guys built like Cavill have to been more careful. Obviously he’s a bulkier muscle guy so when not super lean too he needs perfect tailoring. Which I would have thought he’d have in a Tom Ford suit.

After those black and white photos from last week (Interview mag?) his hit and miss dressing is fine by me. Those pics made his face look like a piece of art.

Amy looks pretty. Yeah, hairband a little cutesy (edit: but Sandra makes a good point re rain)

    • OhDear says:

Yeah, I think that Cavill’s suits aren’t tailored well. The suits make him look stumpy. However, he’s not naturally that bulky – he was much leaner in the Tudors and that Immortals movie. Damn he looked good in armor.

Also, I think Adams looks fine and that the headband isn’t cutesy at all. Wonder if she was cold though – all the men in suits and she’s in a strapless dress!

    • j.eyre says:

I think you are on to something re: the suit. Personally, I prefer a solid vest with a distinctively patterned suit. In this case, although I understand the look, I think a thinner tie and knot would have done more justice to the look. Overall it feels too bulky to me.

      • Anna says:

Agreed with all. This is exactly what I tried to explain in the very first post but clumsy execution took my message in a totally wrong direction >.<

  12. jasmine says:

yes, you are being hard on them. amy looks fantastic and what may not be fashionable in the US does not necessarily mean it’s not in fashion in europe and the rest of the world. infact, i’d go as far as saying that US is always behind in fashion. so keep up!!!!!

  13. Mandy says:

Don’t get me wrong, I love The Cavill, but why is he posing so weird in these pictures?? He looks kind of robotic, right?? Anyone else think so?

  14. Leah says:

Cavill is like a wax figure. Flawless but no charisma. He looks like a cardboard cut out next to Amy Adams.

    • Andrea says:

Seriously though there are some great pics floating around of Amy and Henry at both the after party the other night and from the London premiere that are very cute.

I think Amy is good for him bc she does seem to help him relax as a co-star. I hope they allow these two to lighten up a little bit and have fun in the sequel.

      • Leah says:

Unfortunately the first reviews are out and they are saying Cavill is stiff an humorless in the role. They said it looks like Adams is trying to kiss a piece of granite. Lol!

  15. lisa says:

im never crazy about strapless. in this specific case her boobs would look better with some hiking up. it looked like she will need to pull it up all night long.

  16. D says:

Kaiser- They haven’t had the LA Premiere yet- the first premiere was in NYC the other day. So maybe they’re going to come back to America after Europe? That does sound weird though to do promotional work in the US, then in Europe, then back to America.

  17. Hannah says:

I think everyone noting that Cavill looks stiff and that he lacks charisma or sex appeal are probably bang on the money.
I have read a few reviews and while the film is said to be a decent blockbuster effort. It does say that it lacks sex appeal, the chemistry between adams and cavill is lacking, Cavill himself has been described as a bit stiff.

    • Andrea says:

      I saw the movie.

Henry and Amy actually have great chemistry. Cavill is not the problem. The problem is that the script is heavily focused on action and doesn’t spend as much time on quiet character moments as it should.

People went in expecting alot of time devoted to the Clark/Lois love story and what they got was something different. The actors were great but it was just a different kind of movie.

There is alot of potential though and I hope they move forward with a lighter and more romantic sequel.

      • MissTiss says:

Oh man, this is disappointing to hear. Still, I flove Amy Adams and will go see it just for her.

  18. Miss M says:

This is a great cast (even though I am not a fan of Michael Shannon). Amy always looks great in the carpet.

    “Still no Gina Carano”

    Thank goodness!

  19. taxi says:

Crowe is looking sloppy – mismatched jacket & trousers, short overcoat, scruffy, a bit puffy-faced. I’d really like to see him back in form as the gifted actor I think he is & cleaned up a bit.

  20. TheOriginalWaffle says:

Valentino hasn’t been doing any actresses any favors lately.
