Will Tom Hardy end up playing the young Elton John in the ‘Rocketman’ bio-pic?

Here are some new photos of Tom Hardy yesterday in London, leaving the Soho Hotel. He looks scruffy and hot, doesn’t he? I don’t even mind the gigantic cross necklace. He looks like the kind of dude I would see on the street and think, “UNF.”

Tom continues to sign on for a wide variety of work – he’s one of the most in-demand actors working today. Which is pretty awesome, especially when you consider that Justin Timberlake also works really consistently (ugh). Wouldn’t you rather see Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender in every film, as opposed to Justin Timberlake? Because those are literally your only choices!! Anyway, I’d heard the rumor about Tom maybe being interested in playing “the young Elton John” in a possible Elton bio-pic, and it’s looking like it’s really close to happening:

FilmDistrict is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. rights to Rocketman, the Michael Gracey-directed biographical musical film about Sir Elton John. The script is by Billy Elliot‘s Lee Hall, and Tom Hardy is circling to play the lead role. This film was the talk of Cannes, where it was shopped by UTA, which structured the financing.

The film follows John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records than just about any musical artist of his era. John’s musical catalog is part of the mix, so this is going to be a major film. Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish are producing the project along with Lawrence Bender for AI Film. Sir Elton John and Access Industries’ Len Blavatnik are executive producing the film, along with Icon/AI Film CEO Aviv Giladi and FilmDistrict CEO Schlessel.

“Everyone knows and loves Elton John’s music, but the true story of his life is so incredible that it can only be described as a fantasy,” Gracey said, when I wrote about this project after I reported that he became the director. “His journey from impossible dreamer to stardom and uncontrollable excess is something only a musical film can capture, and I’m so excited to be the one to tell his story.”

They are searching to cast the child Elton John, and that search is being conducted by Jessica Ronane, whose credits include Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Billy Elliott The Musical and Matilda. The hope is that Hardy will take over that role in adulthood, with CAA repping him.

If Elton John is executive producing it and handing over his catalog, you know Elton is going to try to find the hottest, most talented person to play his younger self. Oddly enough, you would think that Justin Timberlake would be up for this, RIGHT? I’m not even joking. Remember the music video for “This Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore”? Ha. But I guess when it comes down to the line, Elton wanted a proper actor who can play pathos and emotion and addiction, someone like Tom Hardy. Plus, Tom is WAY CUTE. I bet Elton is really looking forward to this.

Also, Tom is reportedly attached to take the lead in a film adaptation of the video game Splinter Cell. Tom will be playing “Sam Fisher, a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops sub-division, ‘Echelon’. Sam Fisher and the agents of Echelon utilize combat skills, weapons and cutting-edge gadgets to neutralize international terrorist threats and rogue forces in modern, realistic stories ripped from the headlines.” Sounds very Jason Bourne-ish. And I bet Tom will be really good at that.

I read a similar story on Lainey yesterday and she mentioned that he seemed like the type of actor who is better, personally speaking, when he’s busy. Was that a reference to a blind item? I don’t know much about Tom Hardy, but he seems like a decent actor and a likable guy.

    • Mia 4S says:

He had a serious, serious drug addiction at one point. I imagine it is a reference to that (it’s not a secret). He seems to be staying clean which is fantastic, but I think he’s probably still a very troubled guy.

  2. Bopit says:

SO hot. Even as the Rocketman he could undoubtedly turn straight men gay.

  3. Thora says:

The challenge for Tom is going to be the singing. If he can pull that off then it’ll be one of his most memorable performances.

“Wouldn’t you rather see Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender in every film, as opposed to Justin Timberlake?”

    YES!

I could see him playing a young Elton and KILLING it (because he is THAT good) but he’d have to lose a lot of his bulk right?
I don’t think EJ was jacked in his younger years…that being said, Hardy can play anyone and deliver a solid performance.

    AND he’s sexy as hell.

  5. Leah says:

so is tom with noomi rapace these days?

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

apparently it was only a rumor because they spent so many times together .Hardy was again with Charlotte Riley when he met his sick fan 3 weeks ago

  6. Jenna says:

*sigh* This former Mrs. Hardy isn’t feeling those pics. What happened?! 🙁

    • Marty says:

It’s not quite there, but its still MUCH better then a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it’s all the work? When does the poor guy find the time to sleep?!

  7. Fiesty Redhead says:

I am not sure how i feel about my fantasy lover playing a gay man.but he’s good in anything. If you tom Hardy fans haven’t watched his movie “Bronson” yet, you need to. He is amazing in it.

    • balehead2012 says:

He has already played a gay in RocknRolla. He was Handsome Bob 😀

      • Fatty Magoo says:

That’s right he did. I love Rocknrolla! The scene he comes to Gerard butler is hilarious! Lol

  8. balehead2012 says:

Tom is a cutie! He’s my second favourite actor 🙂

  9. MARIA says:

Oh Tom give it to me!

  10. Jen says:

    wish he’d play me

  11. magpie says:

He’s agood actor but he has the douchiest style. Hate those sneakers and the yucky sun glasses worn on the hat.

  12. Stephanie says:

    My forever dong <3

  13. I Choose Me says:

He could play anything and I would watch. I’m not as gone on him as I am Fassbender or Hiddles but damn if he isn’t one of the most talented actors working today.

    • Leah says:

He is way more talented and charismatic than hiddleston. I mean so far if we are talking about versatility and resume. Hiddleston really has a slim CV and hasnt showed that much versatility yet.

      • I Choose Me says:

You won’t get any argument from me there re: the charisma and talent. And I do think he’s hot. I’m just not as physically attracted to him as I am the aforementioned two. Sometimes my biscuit just doesn’t know what’s good for her. 🙂

    • Isabelle says:

Definitely one of the better actors right now. He’s actually one of the better actors thats came along in years. This new crop of Brits and Aussies are x10 better than most of Hollywood.

  14. Tammy says:

I remember rumors a few years ago, that James McAvoy would be playing Elton. James did voicework on Gnomeo and Juliet, which Furnish produced, and Elton did the music for, so there is a history there. And James can sing.

  15. ella says:

    Please let this be true.

  16. Ginger says:

Oh my! He is SO MUCH hotter than “way cute”…UNF indeed! I’m on board with anything Tom does.

  17. Madrid says:

I find him very very hot… and I don´t even like the tatoos and the cross but he really has something (apart from talent)
