Robert Pattinson’s first Dior Homme print ad: too subdued or totally hot?

Ah, now I understand why everyone was like “Brand new information, Robert Pattinson is the new face of Dior Homme!” We actually heard that news as far back as Fall 2012, and we even heard that Sparkles got $12 million for the campaign, and the campaign is so sexy that Twihards are going to wet themselves or something. But people have been running this news like it’s completely brand-new this week. That’s because Dior was trying to get buzz ahead of the release of the first image (above) from Rob’s campaign. What are your thoughts on the sweater? I think the whole thing is rather sexy. His hair is a good length, he looks mature and contemplative (as opposed to youthful and smiley).

Technically, Sparkles is the new face of the Dior Homme cologne, not the clothes. Previously, Jude Law and Jamie Dornan have been the “face” of Dior cologne. This campaign was shot by Nan Goldin and the commercial was done by director Romain Gavras. WWD says that Dior is only going to air the commercials in Europe and Asia (excluding the UK, China and Japan). The print ads will first appear in the September issues of magazines, and the commercials will air around the same time too.

As for Rob and the way that he completely dumped Kristen Stewart and has barely spoken to her in weeks, Hollywood Life has an interesting update:

Rob, 27, and Kristen, 23, broke up in May, and HollywoodLife.com previously reported that Rob is “depressed” following the split, while Kristen feels like part of her has died. While Rob and Kristen are both deeply hurting, they refuse to do anything “stupid” because they are aware that they are being watched like hawks by the media.

“They are broken up. They don’t want to make things worse by turning it into a media storm by doing stupid things or making their grievances heard in the public,” a source close to the couple EXCLUSIVELY tells us. “Overall, they are speaking but not much — and they are not speaking to get back together.”

Since her split, Kristen has been hanging out with girlfriends a lot. A source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that she’s been leaning on her friends for support during this difficult time.

“Kristen has been just laying low, hanging out with her closest friends and trying to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible,” the source reveals. “She’s just eager to start working again and get busy.”

[From Hollywood Life]

I love the drama and one-upmanship of this: “Rob is ‘depressed’ following the split, while Kristen feels like part of her has died.” Oh, Kristen. So extra. Kristen can’t merely be “a little depressed” she has to feel like DEATH. That being said, I’m glad Kristen hasn’t issued any public statements or tried to make any grand gestures to win Rob back. Better to just let everything cool off naturally.

Oh dear. I’m getting tingles. Sparkles, welcome to Fantasy Five!

    • Autumn says:

      Right?!?

    • Seattlemomma says:

      Right?!? Yummmmmmm.

    • marie says:

I know right? after looking at these I’d hit it, and hit it hard..(he’d be my #5)

as for the Hollywood Life bit, that just seems like word vomit, something for the Twi-hards..

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Sexy in the sweater pic for sure but I still see Bob Pattinson.
Yes, I’m afraid that he’s a bit of a Bob.

    • T.Fanty says:

Really? How do you not always see Cederic Diggory and/or immediately want to hose him down and pass him an adequate razor?

    • Hubbahun says:

Yup. Yup. **starts fanning self** Damn, when did he get so hot? 😀

    • Dubois says:

      Hotness all around. He’s yummy.

    • Jan says:

Perfect picture..dark, mysterious, tough. I think if my hubby saw this picture in a department store advertising that fragrance, he would buy it in an instant. Dior got it right. If he doesn’t buy it, I will.

  2. gorda says:

    Boring!

    • Steph says:

Thank you! I’m over it! I don’t like the shaved head or beard. He used to be prettier but I think I’ve just graduated past Twilight. It was, what, 6 years ago? They made him so hot in those movies, especially the first one. Recently, Tom Hardy is my jam. And Aaron Taylor-Wood.

  3. PunkyMomma says:

Meh on the black and white Dior shot. He needs hair, lots of it.

    • boredsuburbanhousewife says:

Totally agree. He looks his best with hair — though NOT hair on his face.

    • LucyS says:

I actually like him better with longer hair and clean-shaven, too. He seems to like facial hair, which I think makes him look like a skid row resident when you combine it with the way he usually dresses.

    • Ramona says:

      Yesssss!!!
The guy needs hair. Instead of Sparkles his nickname should be Samson. Samson lost his power after his hair was chopped off and Sparkles loses his hotness.

      • KCO says:

        THIS!

      • Just Me says:

Yep. This exactly. Haven’t found him attractive in ages. I think it’s the unkept beard. Scruff is sexy. Neckbeard is gross.

I also think his scruffiness is intentional. I think he wants to be taken seriously and not seen as some heartthrob….though…I can’t see how posing for a cologne ad would help that.

  4. the donkey says:

    ohmygod, he’s sooooo sexy

  5. Insomniac says:

I thought “meh” too. He’s a goodlooking guy but that ad doesn’t do a thing for him. And that blank expression makes me think he hung around Kristen too long.

    • Another Ann says:

I don’t know why people keep calling it an ad. It’s not an ad. It’s a photograph.

      • Nina W says:

It’s an ad photograph. Just because we don’t see Dior Homme in the image does not make it less of an ad. This photo will appear in magazines and department stores shilling the product therefore it is an ad.

      • Nina W says:

You’re right Another Ann, I was totally confused, I thought this was a still from the ad campaign but it’s apparently just for the press release announcing him as the “face of”. That being said, it’s still an ad to me.

  6. Tanguerita says:

OMG, look at his hand, it’s bigger than his head, it completely grosses me out!

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

    • PunkyMomma says:

Yeah, but you know what they say about big hands.

    • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

I’m pretty sure the size is due to the angle at which the photo was taken, his hands aren’t THAT big.

    • Anname says:

Looks normal and masculine to me, unless you are a Lainey devotee. Doesn’t she usually complain about how feminine his hands are? Not so much here.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Totally disagree with Lainey about Rob’s hands.

      • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

@Anname so funny that you mention Lainey cuz she actually rants about his hands in a post regarding the Dior pic.

“but I don’t understand about the hand. This dude has a hand problem, I’m convinced. If they’re not delicately pouring tea for an alligator, they’re three quarters the size of his head. Look at it here, that hand. It’s like a club. A club hand. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why does it either have to be the hand of an anime character or the hand of Hulk? Can’t we find a happy medium?”

What does she have against Rob’s hands? She always finds something negative to say about them, they look like normal hands to me.

      • Diana says:

@Pastyousayyouneverknew, Lainey has always been team KStew, of course she has to find something wrong with him all the time. He’s utterly hot so she ends up sounding crazy, so whatever.

God, I just want that ad already, I can’t wait! They have been teasing with that commercial for far too long and there’s still a long time to wait…

      • Scavenger says:

Love his hands. He is very expressive with them. And, considering he is a musician who plays multiple instruments, he is probably very talented with his hands.

      • UsedToBeLulu says:

Ooh @Scavenger! I just got all wriggley.

      • Nina W says:

Remember “man-hands” from Seinfeld? So funny.

  7. Apples says:

I don’t know enough about Dior’s goals as far as branding, etc. But, I kind of like the photo. The subtly made me look at it longer. I’m guessing they want low-key, unpretentious luxury? Maybe the whole metrosexual thing is over?

  8. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Meh, I dunno, he looks good facially but something about this shoot just isn’t as AMAZING as I thought it would be considering that it’s been talked about for months. I personally think it would have been a lot better if they’d taken the photos during the Cosmopolis premiere promo time – for the first time in my life, I was able to wholeheartedly say that Rob looked smoking hawt!

    • Perplexed says:

This was my favourite period look wise as well.
Well, actually, there were two looks around that time. Cannes and European premieres (clean shaven, shorter hair but not too short); and the New York premiere (longer hair and light beard). My preference was for the first.

      • Scavenger says:

I think that is the look he has in the actual film ad, going by the bootleg screen shots.

  9. Esmom says:

    Hot.

  10. Anname says:

This isn’t the actual ad though? It’s a Dior press photo, but not part of the actual print ads that will be released in Sept.

  11. Mia 4S says:

Look up “dull” in the dictionary and this photo will be front and center. So bland!

  12. lower-case deb says:

for me, it feels like some cologne you put on after toilet breaks during a hike up The Appalachians. or as one waits to be discovered on a side trial towards Everest. something to spare the rescuers from that ripeness.

  13. Shelley says:

Sparkles cleans up so damn well. If he showered more and let his hair grow out a little, like in these photos I would do him.

  14. cabfan34 says:

    He is not attractive.

    • Anname says:

SO SO disagree, I think he is amazingly attractive. Can’t wait to see the rest of the ad campaign.

  15. Tessa says:

I think it’s an ok shot, but not what I was expecting for his big Dior campaign. I was expecting ultra sexy, not pensive and understated in a sweater. Eh, whatever.

    • FreeSpiritedGirl says:

HA! Yes. I thought I was the only one.
I was expecting Rob in a white linen shirt with few buttons un-buttoned with a drop of sweat running down is chest, pouting slightly with a mischievious sparkle in his eyes. (sic) I think I expected way to much from Christian Dior. 🙁

  16. Lb says:

This scandal has made him more interesting. Pre scandal I would look at the picture and say eh. Now I look and I see sadness, betrayal, wisdom that experience imparts. I’m clearly projecting lol.

    • FreeSpiritedGirl says:

I see sadness and sadness and sadness… Oh! I’m getting depressed looking at a depressed Rob.

    • Apples says:

That’s so funny about the, “Am I projecting?” thoughts. When I look at the picture I see, “No more Bullsh!t. All that foolishness is over.” Seems like people are all seeing different things in this photo.

  17. Lauren says:

I like that pic. Just a warm up for the real thing. It’s just a nice relaxed shot of him introducing him and he looks mature and hot. The actual pics for store ads, etc. are where the shots should be more amazing.

    • Tessa says:

Yeah, I think this was actually just a portrait shot for the Dior website. It’s not the actual print ad. We haven’t seen that yet.

  18. FreeSpiritedGirl says:

(sic) I love Robert Pattinson, I love everything he does, anything he promotes but this… I was so excited about this ad but after looking at the stills and screen shots on some website, all my excitement has vanished. Rob looks totally depressed in every scene. There is no emotion. Blank… I guess it might be because the time this ad was shot, it was the time when he walked out on Kristen after her cheating scandal was out. He looks twice of his real age in these CD’s posters. Just blank…no emotion… (sic)
    I was so excited… :'(

  19. Lee says:

He always looks childish to me.

  20. Micki says:

In the first photo he reminds me a bit of the young Lenin LOL.
He looks mature and photographs well in black and white.
I don’t know whether that will make me buy but I’ll appreciate the eye-candy

  21. Perplexed says:

This is so underwhelming and random (as well as the other shots leaked on fan sites).
To me this doesn’t create excitement about the campaign.
They should have had at least one sensational shot.
He looks like a serial killer in that third pic. I almost didn’t recognize him.

    • Lou says:

Come on, someone snapped a sneaky pic on their phone while the ad was screened at the press conference. I’m confused as to how you can make a judgement based on a poor quality, skewed image. But whatever. I do agree that Dior should clarify that no image from the actual campaign has been officially released. This is why people leaking stuff online is never a good thing. Opinion based on a sketchy image isn’t ideal by any means. I happen to think, from what we can see, Rob looks amazing in the ad.

      • Perplexed says:

Nothing I like better than drooling over good pics of Rob. Point taken that the campaign might look different.
Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised in September.

      • Nina W says:

Hopefully the ads will be more interesting then these bland images.

  22. Tig says:

I like the photo with him in the sweater. I’m sure the ads will be leaked ( I hope!!). I think he wears the h**l out of a suit, and appears the video will have that component.
Amazed this thread has stayed civilized for this long- happy weekend!

  23. Lou says:

There’s been some serious miscommunication regarding this image. This is a press shot, not the campaign image. The entire campaign is under embargo until September, I still think Rob looks gorgeous here though. I’m pretty sure this shot was taken when he visited NYC back in April – same air and beard length. I can’t wait to see the print ads and the commercial, the snippets we’ve seen via instagram pics and the journalists at the junket this week, look hot! Plus the soundtrack to the ad is Zeppelin’s ‘whole lotta love’. I think it’ll be cool, edgy and sexy. Great collaboration in my opinion 🙂

    • Lou says:

      *hair length*

    • Nina W says:

Thanks for the clarification, I was totally confused, the way they released this I thought it was one of the stills from the ad by Nan Goldin but I gather it’s just for the press release not the actually campaign.

  24. chria says:

verrry handsome rob! i like you cleaned up! i think kristen and her dirty look was rubbing off on you

  25. serena says:

    Uh.. sexy.

  26. Vee says:

    Yes please! Looking great!

  27. Deb says:

*meh* that’s the best I can come up with.

  28. Jj says:

He looks great and more mature. Excited to see what the ad will look like now

  29. mia girl says:

    He looks really good.

  30. I love him in the pic with the white sweater, but I don’t think he’s hot with short hair AT ALL. And he will never be as sexy as he was in in Harry Potter (to me)

If he always looked like Cedric Diggory he’d be my number one celebrity crush 🙂

  31. Edgar says:

I can’t help myself. He always looks like he smells

  32. Giselle says:

I love it Dior Rob is all win.

  33. Another Ann says:

Do look forward to hearing the interviews he gave as part of this press junket. There were a bunch of tweets yesterday from the foreign journalists who interviewed him, and all talked about how down to earth/smart/funny he was. He does give good interview.

I had to laugh though. Don’t know how old they were, but almost to a person they said how “adorable” he was. One wanted to adopt him. Didn’t hear hot/sexy, but cute/adorable. 🙂

I do think that’s something Rob has going for him that will help him continue his career beyond Twilight. He’s likeable and charming. Aside from Lainey, who has unspecified issues with him, virtually everyone else who interviews him speaks really highly of him. Even the male interviewers talk about him being a really cool guy.

    • pippa says:

Yes, I am most looking forward to the interviews. He is a charmer in that.

I like the portrait pic. Sexy, mature. I like the length of scruff on his face.

Hope the commercial that will be available in Europe finds its way to US through youtube at least….

      • Vee says:

He is well read, intelligent and witty. I cannot wait to read the interviews as well.
I’m sure we will see the commercial. 🙂

    • Tig says:

Totally agree-never underestimate charm. And the posters up above re hand size- he’s a good piano player, and it always helps to have large hands-octave reach is great! May have the phrasing wrong- long time since I was around a piano!!

      • another nina says:

I could do octave reach when I was 6 😉 Not a biggie. His hands though are honestly enormous. But he has a very large head and fairly large feet as well, so he looks relatively proportional.

      • Nina W says:

Nice name, another nina! He’s fairly tall at 6′ 1″ as well so he seems proportional to me but a lot of celebrities have big heads (physically), the camera loves big heads.

  34. Rabia says:

Love the sweater pic. It’s not the ad, though. Just a portrait to accompany the announcement.

That screencap makes him look like a psychotic, malnourished, prisoner of war or something. It makes me curious about what he looks like in the rest of the spot.

  35. Fred says:

    Looks just right

  36. Chordy says:

At first I was all “he looks gorgeous!” and then I scanned past the Chris Evans picture and I was all “okay, but not Chris Evans gorgeous.”

  37. Reece says:

He looks so damn good cleaned up!
Am I the only one getting elf ear from the first pic? Which I have to say I kinda love. lol

  38. Mouse says:

Kristen’s fading into obscurity and Rob’s star is rising. As it should be.

  39. Jade says:

Just don’t hire the folks who did Brad’s commercial.

  40. Emily C. says:

He always looks uncomfortable to me, and especially in these pictures. Like his underwear itches.

  41. moon says:

Ooh, first time I’m finding him sexy. Dior must have a good makeup/art direction/photography team.

  42. perforatedcover says:

Like the understated pic, and looking forward to the full campaign. Yay for Rob!

  43. taxi says:

Nothing there I’d want. Sorry, Dior.

  44. cubfan34 says:

Here is the male face of Dior.

    http://www.luxuo.com/beauty/alain-delon-perfume-dior-eau-sauvage.html#comments
They don’t even look like the same species.

    • DB says:

meh, that guy in your picture does nothing for me. Just goes to show, different strokes for different folks…

      • Nina W says:

Yum, Alain Delon was so gorgeous, he still looks good at 77!

      • cubfan34 says:

Alain Delon was the most beautiful man in the history of film. I stumbled upon Le Samouria last fall and I’ve been obsessed with him ever since. Underrated actor because of his looks.

  45. Janet says:

Love the last pic of him in the white sweater. The first three are just meh.

  46. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Ooooh, Virgilia like. THIS Sparkles is why you should’ve dumped Kristen a long time ago…he hasn’t looked this good since I don’t know when.

  47. Emma says:

He looks really sexy and mature. New age of Rob.

  48. DB says:

Very nice indeed. Sexy but not OTT, just the perfect balance. I can’t wait to see the actual ad!

  49. Blue says:

Eyes, soulful. Pianist hands, that also strum a guitar. 🙂 Lovely Rob.

  50. ordg says:

    He looks like Grumpy Cat

  51. Thais says:

Am I the only one bothered by Dior using young Hollywood star’s as its face? Nothing against him or Jennifer Lawrence, who I think is a brilliant actress, but they look nothing like the kind of person you would think represents the image of Dior!

    • Nina W says:

Celebrity creep has ruined so many things, this is just one more to add to the list.

  52. KierneM says:

Yummy, just yummy! The Rob I fell in love with in HP 4 is back! Now, whereintheheck did I put that drool bucket…
