Elisha Cuthbert married Canadian hockey star Dion Phaneuf on Saturday

Elisha Cuthbert

I’m not sure how many people here will care about this news, but Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert (a.k.a., Maxim’s current reigning most beautiful woman on television) has married her Canadian hockey player boyfreind of a few years, Dion Phaneuf. This is apparently huge news in Canada because Dion is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Leaves?), and he’s apparently quite the catch since he’s in the midst of a six-year, $39 million contract. Physically, Dion reminds me a lot of a more muscular version of Robert Ackroyd of Florence + the Machine. Do you see the likeness as well?

Elisha and Dion’s nuptuals turned his little hometown upside down over the weekend. The National Post published a large feature about how the island town of Summerfield was all abuzz over the celebrity-laden event. According to Rev. Paul Egan, “It’s a big wedding, probably the biggest I’ve ever done in my 46 years, as far as the celebrity part of it goes.” If you’re interested in the full rundown, you should read the Post’s article as linked above. For the shorthand take, here’s the publicist friendly version (with a photo of Elisha’s dress) from People:

Elisha Cuthbert has found her real-life Happy Ending.

The Canadian actress, 32, wed her longtime love, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, 28, on Saturday at Prince Edward Island, according to the Journal Pioneer and Toronto Star.

More than 300 guests were expected to flock to the reception, reports the National Post, after the newlyweds exchanged vows at the St. James Catholic Church in Summerfield.

Star reporter Rosie DiManno live-Tweeted their big day from inside the church, which was decorated with maple leaves. Bridesmaids donned pale pink fishtail gowns, she wrote, and the bride herself was chauffeured in a black Chevrolet Camaro convertible.

Prince Edward Island was a meaningful choice for the couple, who often spend their summers on the picturesque eastern Canadian island, according to The Toronto Star. Canada’s Global News reported that the duo planned an outdoor wedding followed by a party with family and friends and culminating with fireworks over the water.

The nuptials are a fitting end to the couple’s long courtship, which began five years ago.

Phaneuf popped the question last September and announced their engagement to 35 friends and family during a lobster dinner at New Glasgow Lobster, a restaurant on the island, according to the Star.

Manager Karl Nickelson told the Star his servers couldn’t help but notice her eye-catching engagement ring during the celebratory meal.

“They said it was pretty huge,” he said.

The National Post has some really great photos of the church and the picturesque setting (Dion’s home) where the reception was held. As far as celebrity couples go, Elisha and Dion have maintained a relatively low-profile relationship. They’ve walked a few red carpets together, but we haven’t heard about any sort of drama. Good for them! Congratulations to Elisha and Dion.

    Captain Forehead though…

    congrats!

  3. lady_luck says:

She’s stunning. It’s a shame her foundation doesn’t quite match her tan on the first pic. Congrats to both.

  4. Holly says:

Hope Mandonna performed at her wedding!

  5. Kaboom says:

He doesn’t look like he’s the sharpest tool in the shed but good luck to them.

    • Meaghan says:

All hockey players have that look on their face most of the time, and I can say this from experience, it does not always indicate they are dumb. In fact, a guy who onw plays for LA that I grew up with, was the only reason I passed my math final in High School. He always leaned to the left and I could see all of his answers! And I passed solely because of this.

Several years ago while still playing for the Calgary Flames, he had his truck stolen because he left the engine running and the doors unlocked while he went into a shopping mall.

Well, not so low profile. BTW, I love Happy Endings and her in it. I’m sorry to see it cancelled.

She was involved with Justin Timberlake’s best friend, engaged or living together or something, and she dumped him for another guy, this guy she finally married. Justin wrote a song about her from his friend’s viewpoint of heartache on his FutureSex/Love Sounds album. What Goes Around Comes Around. Amazing song, and boy the lyrics were something. She must have had some trouble with ths hockey player at first. She was furious over the song. The interlude at the five-minute mark is the best thing of this song, great change in song and lyrics and probably the part that made her furious.

What Goes Around Comes Around – The lyrics are on the video:

    • Tiffany says:

Ah yes. The Sean Avery debicle. She left Jusrins BFF for him and then she left Avery for this guy. Avery lost his job in Dallas because he called her sloppy seconds in a interview pre or post game. From a normal gossip standpoint she is lowkey but in NHL gossip, this was huge.

      • Holly says:

Damn, she was with Sean Avery! My mind cannot wrap itself around that pairing or how I missed this when it was happening.

      • Rux says:

Supposedly, that song by Justin Timberlake, “What goes around comes around” was directed at Elisha not Britney for the fact that she dissed his Best Friend, took up Sean Avery and then Sean cheated on her like crazy.

      • Devon says:

Sean Avery is such a dick bag.

      • Meaghan says:

Sean is a total jerk. The sloppy seconds comment was about how he doesn’t know why all these hockey players want his sloppy seconds, and was also targeted at Rachel Hunter who went on to date another NHL player.

Sean is skeezy, a total jerk.

    • Bridget says:

I thought that was crappy of Justin, and I found it very interesting that the very next fiance of Mr. Ayala (Joanna Garcia) dumped him as well for an athlete (Nick Swisher). Dude’s a professional best friend, otherwise known as a hanger-on.

But I will never understand why anyone gets with Sean Avery. What an awful guy.

  7. Apsutter says:

Awwww…good for her!! I’m really gonna miss watching her in Happy Endings but I hope she gets some more good work now too.

  8. Jen says:

The town is actually called Summerside, not Summerfield.

    • Sinndy says:

Actually, is IS Summerfield. It’s a tiny town just down hwy 8 from New London in PEI, which is apparently where Phaneuf’s summer home is and where his family members live (in that area, at least). Summerside is a “big city”, not befitting the small-town setting of the wedding.

  9. Jenna says:

Aww, good for her! At least she got her happy ending…unlike the show, which I loved! *my cries*

  10. Dani says:

    Her wedding dress looks gorgeous.

  11. Nerd Alert says:

Aw good for them. I love her in Happy Endings. My friend and I are going to petition FX to pick the show up.

  12. Happy21 says:

God! She really is beautiful isn’t she?

Always happy when Canadians people actually like get hitched…lol!

  13. bagladey says:

BEAUTIFUL wedding dress. Congratulations and Good Luck to them.

  14. Lizzie says:

NO IT’S LEAFS! sometimes I say ‘leafs’ in a sentence when I’m actually supposed to say leaves too. It’s a Toronto thing, I’m pretty sure almost everyone here does it.
Also, only my fellow Torontonians will feel me on this, but I find it HILARIOUS that Rosie DiManno live-tweeted the wedding. I want to know how she actually clawed her way into the church.

  15. wonderwoman21 says:

I was told i look like a latina elisha cuthbert, i’ll take that compliment 😀
