Cate Blanchett promotes her new Woody Allen film in NYC: perfection or a style miss?

God, I love Cate Blanchett. I’m obsessed with her. These are photos of Cate entering the Ed Sullivan Theater yesterday afternoon, about to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman. I love everything about her. I love the black dress. I love the shoes. I love her slim figure. I love her pale skin. I love her face. Obsessed!

Cate is in NYC to promote her new film Blue Jasmine, written and directed by Woody Allen. This is the first time Cate and Woody have worked together, and she’s been vocal about how much she enjoyed it and how much she always wanted to work with Woody. She plays the wife of a Bernie Madoff-type businessman (played by Alec Baldwin) who loses everything. Cate’s character goes from being a wealthy New York socialite to being some financially strapped women who can’t get a job and is forced to move in with relatives in San Francisco. People are already saying that her performance is something special. When does Cate give a bad performance though? Here’s the trailer:

Cate also appeared at the premiere of Blue Jasmine last night, but we don’t have those photos – go here to see. She wore a really weird, crazy Balenciaga dress. Perfection!

Here’s Cate on The Late Show last night:

  3. Snowpea says:

She makes me SUPER proud to be an Aussie girl.

  4. allons-y alonso says:

    i bow before my queen!

  5. Micki says:

I don’t know why this should be a mess.
It’s more of a blank canvas for the missing accents that she doesn’t wear.

  6. Jayna says:

    Love her. She looks fantastic.

  7. Anna says:

Why dont Woody Allen movies get more buzz? This is the first I am hearing of Blue Jasmine. Watched the trailer – LOVE IT! Cate is fantastic in it, per usual. Cannot wait to see – at least Russia seems to always import Allen’s latest, and in English at that, for all the expats.

    • Vesta says:

I agree that trailer was so good!

The dress is a safe choice, but she can do no wrong IMO.

      • TG says:

I agree to I am still obsessed with Midnight in Paris so much so that I had to put it away for awhile. Can not wait for this and to see both Cate and Alec this should be good.

    • LAK says:

      1. They are samey. It becomes exhausting and eyerolly to keep up.

      2. He makes one nearly every year.

      3. People still remember the scandal therefore more low key PR.

      4. He is primarily financed in Europe these days so his films don’t have the big studio roll out with fireworks and razzmatazz as only a studio can.

      5. If you look at industry media, this film has been buzzed about for some time.

      • QQ says:

I Dont fuck around with creepy Woody Allen or his quippy precious movies, BUT im about to break and see this one for Blanchett…AndSexyAssBobbyCannavaleOMG

      • Anna says:

LAK – this was a totally awesome analysis. I never thought about any of those factors. Thanks!

Personally I liked Match Point, Midnight in Paris and esp Vicky Christina Barcelona; the Italy-set one last year was kind of meh. He should do Moscow next.

      • LAK says:

QQ – i think for the mighty Cate, i will have to see this one.

Anna – if a Moscowvite is willing to finance him, sure.

    • lucy2 says:

I hadn’t heard of it either. I don’t care for many of his films, but I loved Midnight in Paris SOOOO much. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to listen to the soundtrack while working this afternoon.

  8. blue marie says:

perfect as always, but this looks a little bland for her. such a gorgeous woman.

  9. Tish says:

Don’t like her shoes. Can’t understand her earrings. She should make a movie with Swinton and Cumberbatch. They all look ethereal.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

I love the shoes! And yes, the trio in a movie would be perfect! But what? Cat People?

  10. Yasmina says:

I know this was discussed by the authors of celebitchy and the lovely commentators before, but I cannot get over how disappointed I am in her collaborating with first Roman Polansky and now Woody Allen? Yes, she has the right as an artist to pursue interesting projects for the sake of art and creativity, but she is a human being first and foremost with a responsibility to act with integrity and ensure that her work does not legitimize the products of rapists like Polansky. She really is something special and always looks amazing, but a big WTF looms over such projects in my opinion.

Oh and she scores bonus points for not sporting an orange slash fake tan.

  11. MeowuiRose says:

I love her. Cate……Tilda……Kate (Wins let)……Meryl….all of them just scream grace, beauty and perfection. Her skin is flawless and I love her style.

  12. nico says:

Cate is getting rave reviews for her performance in this film. People are already calling her a favorite for Best Actress for next year’s Oscar race.

  13. Dawn says:

I love it! I think she looks perfectly put together as she normally does. I love Woody Allen movies so I knew about this and that he gave Andrew Dice Clay a part in it as well. This looks like a great movie.

  14. dcypher1 says:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look bad at all. She looks amazing love the dress.

  15. Carol says:

Love her! Love the black dress; do not like the peach feathered/caped ensemble in the link.

  16. alexc says:

I usually don’t comment but…she is a goddess. Beauty, talent, brains, grace and class. She is perfection really and I’d pay to watch her do laundry!

  17. bns says:

    STUNNING.

  18. Mika says:

    Always perfection!

  19. smee says:

That Balenciaga dress wouldn’t work on just anyone, but it totally does on her.

She looks like an exotic flower!

She’s also absolute perfection in the black v-neck dress.

  20. ladybert62 says:

The shoes are ugly – the earrings are – bizzare.

I just don’t think she is as beautiful as the rest of you seem to think.

    She is an excellent actress.

  21. Chrissy says:

Blue Jasmine reminds me very much of A Streetcar named Desire. Cate’s performance in the trailer is very similar to her performance as Blanche. It should be good!

    • neelyo says:

Yes! This is totally Woody’s STREETCAR and for all of us who didn’t get to see her Blanche onstage, this will have to do.

  22. Jules says:

Those shoes? I love them, does anyone know who’s the designer?

  23. TheOriginalKitten says:

Perfection as always. She has the kind of ethereal beauty that makes her seem so otherworldly.

    *le sigh*

    AND she’s a phenomenal actress.

  24. Ginger says:

Don’t worry Kaiser you are not alone. I too am obsessed with Cate. I look to her and to Helen Mirren as beauty icons. I always look forward to her performances.

  25. lucy2 says:

She is perfection. Amazingly talented, beautiful, and a style icon – even the bizarre stuff, it works on her. Plus she’s low key and more interested in the art of acting and film than fame.

  26. mslewis says:

I really dislike Woody Allen so I pay little to no attention to his movies. However, I did see “Midnight in Paris” simply because it was filmed in my all-time favorite city in the world and it was pretty good. Since I adore Cate, this movie might be the second Allen movie to see.

Cate looks great in that dress. It’s beautiful, I think.

  27. Cleveland Girl says:

It looks like a round about remake of Streetcar named Desire

  28. Eve says:

she’s divine, statuesque and talented, can hardly do anything wrong, but she did seem kind of nervous with Dave, constantly checking up her nails, while he went on about everything but the movie and then raving how she is the movie, lol, not sure what to make of it!

  29. Diana says:

Ohhhh, that movie looks gooooooood. I love everything about the outfit and look except the shoes. I don’t know why exactly I dislike them but they bother me. Oh Whatever, is La Blanchet, she’s perfection.

  30. Georgia says:

    always and forever my goddess!

  31. Miss Melissa says:

She is luminous. Love the dress. Hate the shoes.

  32. Tatiana says:

I am also obsessed with her, as she is so beautiful, elegant, talented and has an ethereal presence.
She looks beautiful in both dresses, but I specially love the Balenciaga one as it looks like a piece of art.

  33. Mia says:

I love this minimalist look. This dress is all about the tailoring, the fabric, the contrasting details. It fits her beautifully. She looks hot! The shoes are gorgeous too.

  34. crtb says:

Being in a Woody Allen is always a miss!

  35. Denise says:

The woman is 44 and absolute perfection. Style miss? No way.

  36. Jay says:

She is perf. There was a mag cover of her last year with no makeup and no Photoshop – you could see every wrinkle. She’s so stunning.
