Is Wes Bentley the perfect choice for Bruce Wayne in the ‘Man of Steel’ sequel?

Ever since Man of Steel producers announced that the sequel would include Bruce Wayne/Batman, everybody has had an opinion about which young actor should be cast to go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill. Last week the rumor was Tyler Hoechlin, who… can we agree that he’s a non-starter? But there are new rumors that Wes Bentley might be getting consideration. Nothing firm, there’s not even a report about Wes auditioning or anything. It’s just a whisper, a rumor, a theory. I’m all for it – Bruce Wayne is such a tortured guy, and Wes could make him emo AND badass, I think.

I think the whispery rumors come from the fact that Wes has just signed on to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, and Nolan is a producer on the Man of Steel franchise and such. So maybe Nolan will put in a good word? They could do much worse than Bentley. MUCH worse. Anyway, Bentley has joined the Interstellar cast which also includes Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Caine, John Lithgow and Casey Affleck. Ugh, sausage party. Oh, Ellen Burstyn is in it too. Oh, good. Two whole speaking parts for actresses. Wes also has this new interview in The Hollywood Reporter where he talks about his sobriety (he’s been clean for more than 3 years now) and his second-chance career:

In 2009, 10 years after breaking out in American Beauty, Wes Bentley was holed up in a dingy apartment in Los Angeles’ Little Armenia, withdrawing from copious amounts of drugs, including cocaine and heroin.

His best friend, Heath Ledger, had died a year earlier from a prescription drug overdose, the same year Bentley was arrested and pled guilty to heroin possession. There were no auditions on the horizon. In serious debt with the IRS, he had hit rock bottom.

Shortly before, Bentley had been shooting Roland Joffe’s There Be Dragons in Argentina, his only film work, when a colleague opened up about his own recovery. Something about the man’s enthusiasm for life touched Bentley. He wanted to feel that way again. After detoxing in L.A., he hopped a plane back to Buenos Aires the next day and began attending daily meetings with his sober friend.

Now, four years sober, Bentley is in great demand again. He recently landed the lead role in Ryan Murphy’s HBO pilot Open. And the 34-year-old actor just booked a meaty supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar — an ironic career twist given that Nolan was one of the directors Bentley passed on when he was in the throes of drug abuse.

“I put up such a wall that I didn’t even go and meet with these great directors whom I respected and admired so much,” says Bentley, who also turned down opportunities to work with Tim Burton, Ang Lee and Tony Scott.

His addiction caused him to take lengthy breaks from working. After shooting The Four Feathers with Ledger in 2000, he didn’t shoot a film again until The Game of Their Lives in 2003, then nothing until Ghost Rider in 2005.

“I wasn’t bringing my A game to any of them,” he recalls. “I don’t know if I was bringing my B game. I just kind of didn’t care and [was] coasting.”

In retrospect, says Bentley, success came too easy. After a year at Juilliard, the Arkansas native was auditioning for a road production for the musical Rent when casting director Meredith Jacobson noticed him. She asked Bentley to come read for the low-budget indie Three Below Zero. He read with Kate Walsh, and both landed lead roles.

After work in Jonathan Demme’s Beloved and Arne Glimcher’s The White River Kid, Bentley was offered American Beauty, the success of which both launched his career and contributed to his near demise. In the surreal aftermath of the film’s release, Bentley, then 21, found himself presenting at the Oscars. Casting agents liked his intensity, good looks and talent that suggested a young Christian Bale.

He says he began using drugs to escape expectations, taking trips to Arizona and Northern California to disappear. His heroin addiction, he says, “happened in a matter of days.” Drugs ended his first marriage, to actress Jennifer Quanz. They divorced in 2009. He never entered rehab (“due to a lack of money”) but still attends meetings a few times a week, wherever he is. His 2010 marriage to producer Jacqui Swedberg and their 2½-year-old son are powerful incentives to stay straight.

He also recently worked with Terrence Malick — and Bale — in Knights of Cups, a film that Green produced.

“I’ve been given this second chance, and I’m going to do everything I can with it,” he says. “And with Chris Nolan giving me an opportunity, I’m working with people that I can really learn from.”

Still, there’s one side of Bentley that hasn’t emerged professionally — his sense of humor, hidden for years behind the brooding and drug use.

“I would definitely love to do a straight-up comedy, like a Judd Apatow movie [or] the whole Seth Rogen group,” he says. “I love the Coen brothers’ sense of humor. … For so many years, I took everything so seriously. Life could have been a lot more fun.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I’m not sure we’ll see him in a comedy any time soon. Which is fine. There are worse things in the world than being typecast as an intense, handsome dramatic actor. God, do you even know how much I loved him in 1999? I feel that same rush of squealy fan-girldom again. I want him to be Batman!!!

  1. Stef Leppard says:

No way. Cannot see him as Batman at all!

  2. Elodie says:

Well on hand he does intense roles very well, plus his friggn’ blue eyes do help a lot!

On the other hand… I dunno, I still have that bag scene of American Beauty in me head and I’m like…. dude no not Batman!

  3. mkyarwood says:

I think he has the talent, and a similar jawline/smile to Bale. Could work out.

    • Monty says:

Thats exactly the problem with this guy, Mkyarwood. He would be trapped in Bales shadow. Seen as the actor who got cast because of a resemblance to the “real batman”. Its too damn soon for a new Bruce Wayne. The studio is gonna cock this up big time.

On an unrelated note. I am amused by these type of pieces. Hes basically telling Hollywood that he messed up, hes getting help, he has been humbled, now please hire me. Which is why its in a Trade Magazine like Hollywood Reporter and not People Magazine. Its not a comeback YET. That will depend on whether Hollywood accepts the mea culpa.

  4. Yellowshaba says:

Yeah i dont really see him as Bman either, but way to go on his recovery

  5. Tessa says:

No, not for me. I still vote for Garrett Hedlund.

  6. Darkladi says:

Hypnotic. I wanted to run away with him in American Beauty

  7. Lark says:

Yes. I love him, he can act, and he oodles of charisma. I also am rooting for Garrett Hedlund or Idris Elba. I think it would be awesome if they cast Idris; he makes everything better and a black Batman would be great. It’s pretty cool how Wes managed to revive his career. If only Lindsay had used him as an example…c’est la vie.

    • Elodie says:

Idris Elba is something like the equivalent of a Black Eva Green, everyone wants them in their fan dream castings or something… He can’t play everything lol! He’d be too old for a reboot, considering they are looking for a younger version.

      • Lark says:

LOL. Don’t crush my dreams. I’d be happy if Idris could play every role 🙂 Too bad he will likely be too old for Bond by the time Daniel Craig gets done, now that would have been perfect. Michael B. Jordan? That would be kind of interesting. I do like Wes a lot though, and he has the chops and the charisma to balance out bland Henry.

    • Monty says:

Its too soon to be renooting Batman. Especially since Bale was so beloved in the role and kept it for so long. This is going to be a mega mess!

Unless………unless they cast an actor that is just as talented as Bale, has established credibility but is so completely different from Bale that it limits direct comparisons. Enter Idris Elba!

I dont see age being an issue. The guy hasnt aged a day since The Wire. And I am not just saying that coz I am a fan. Seriously check it out.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

They won’t cast Idris. The DC universe is quite rooted in Bruce Wayne’s origins. Example: Catwoman with Halle Berry. But he’s a brilliant actor and I would love to see him as Black Panther in the Marvel universe!

Batman won’t get an origin story the way Superman did, at least he shouldn’t unless it’s just a movie with one of his random villains. Or something that’ll bring together tons of Leaguers for a showdown with someone like Darkseid. I’m interested in this guy as being Wayne. I don’t recall him in movies or seeing him act that I can think of at present moment. But he’s got a Bruce Wayne look about him.

      • Side-Eye says:

@Dommy Dearest. Hmm. Personally I can’t see Idris as Black Panther. Maybe Djimon Honsou? Idk, maybe it’s because those are the only roles I’ve seen him in but I always Elba some kind of suit type. I’d have to think on it. And I’d love it if they recast Storm, because Halle doesn’t cut it with me. Either way though, I’d love a Black Panther movie–I find the Wakandan culture/society fascinating!

      • Dommy Dearest says:

I forgot one more bad casting: Jessica Alba as Susan Storm. Ouuu, I think you’re on to something with Djiamon. I can see him as Black Panther in a heartbeat 😀

  8. Tulip says:

    YES please!

I will always root for Bentley. And the way he’s having his comeback and being so honest and humble about his past problems makes me like him even more.
He’s talented, he deserves to be successful.

  9. hmmmmm.... says:

This is the best idea for batman I’ve heard yet. Although I think he would out-act Cavill in every scene they have together…

    • LadyLupton says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. I’ll always root for Wes, bless him. And I think he’ll make a great batman.

    • Momoftwo says:

I agree he is hot and broody and emo…perfect Bruce Wayne

  10. Esmom says:

I don’t know about him as Bruce Wayne but his comeback story is amazing. Wishing him continued strength and success. And I hope he gets to let loose and do the comedy he wants!

  11. AKA says:

Interstellar has Jessica Chastain too. And the part for Anne Hathaway was a much sought after one. So I wouldn’t dismiss the movie as a ‘sausage-fest’ prematurely.

I could totally see Wes Bentley as Batman. But the question is would he over power Cavill as Superman in the same movie? I’d think the producers might go with an acting equal. Not someone who would prove their star is an amateur.

    • ALG says:

Have you read the script? I have. It’s typical Nolan. Neither female role (the lead and major supporting) are that great. And Anne’s role wasn’t “much sought after”… Nolan didn’t even do real casting for it, just gave it to her. That role never went out.

  12. Tig says:

Doubt if I would see the Sman/Nman movie, but I think he could pull off Batman- hey, I still love Michael Keaton’s Batman, and he had his doubters too!

Kudos to him for winning the fight against his addiction.

  13. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

He would definitely out-act Henry but I don’t see him as batman.

  14. grabbyhands says:

I could mos def see him as Batman. He’s a talented actor and he would carry the right amount of dramatic weight for the role. It’s going to be great to see him taking on more roles-I’m glad that he was able to come through everything.

  15. stace says:

He looks like Nightwing to me

  16. A says:

I’m not feeling it. Or him.

  17. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

With his intensity he outshines a good many of his over exposed peers. I hope he doesn’t go the Johnny Depp commercial route – and stays away from the apatow/rogan material – he’s better than that.

  18. Emma says:

He’s too strong of an actor to be paired with the charisma vacuum that is Henry Cavil.

    • Tessa says:

Henry Cavill is a sad case. All the looks in the world, but about as charismatic as a block of wood.

  19. Apsutter says:

I LOVE Wes Bentley! He’s so unusual and has had such a crazy life story. I’m glad he’s coming back and grtting work. I loved the he popped up in Hunger Games.

  20. Cam S says:

    Those eyes….

  21. INeedANap says:

DAMMIT NO. The last movie set Joe Gordon Levitt as Batman. I will say it a thousand times — stop trying to cast these whiny or bland actors. Ugh.

    • Emma says:

JGL was the very definition of whiny and bland in the last Batman movie.

      • Side-Eye says:

@Emma Agreed. I don’t get why so many people want JGL to play Batman in the first place, *nothing* about him screams Dark Knight at all.(Not to mention the fact that people somehow keep forgetting that Zack Snyder’s DC Universe is completely different from Nolan’s and so that “passing the cowl” continuity wouldn’t work here at all.) If they were going to cast dude for anything, the best bet would be for Nightwing.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

The three Nolan movies are stand alone films. Nothing that happened in those movies will be mentioned in the JLA or Superman movie. So JGL is not set up to be Batman for the series of movies they are creating now (And his character eventually becomes Nightwing btw). The Batman that is cast for the sequel of Superman will be the Batman we’ll see in the next coming DC movies unless they recast for what ever reason.

      That is all.

  22. ALG says:

I thought Jessica Chastain, or whatever her bland, beige self is named, was in Interstellar, too? Maybe that was just a rumor and not confirmed.

  23. Reah Greene says:

I have no problem with Wes Bentley and I am glad he got clean. But why oh why will they not even consider Michael B. Jordan for Batman???? I would love it if he got that role.Does Batman have to be a white guy with dark hair and blue eyes?I mean America is ready for a black President, why not a superhero. It would be exciting to see a black Batman.I think it is just the change that the franchise needs after Christian Bale left.

    • Samtha says:

I doubt they will ever have balls enough to do it. Fanboys would freak out over it. If they could barely take a black Perry White, having a black Batman would give them a collective aneurism.

Not big on the idea of Michael B. Jordan, but Chiwetel Ejiofor or Michael Ealy? Yes, please! And of course Idris Elba.

    • Side-Eye says:

To be honest I find stunt casting and tokenism to be ridiculous. I’d love more black heroes like Black Panther and the Falcon and Luke Cage to make it to the big screen, but making a historically white character black just for the sake of pandering to the PC crowd, and contributing to tokenism is absurd.

      • Reah Greene says:

First of all Side Eye, it wouldn’t be “stunt casting’ it would be color blind casting. And as far as ‘tokenism” how is casting a great actor, who just happens to be black, a token? And btw,Bruce Wayne was never a real person. It is not like asking for Micheal B. Jordan to play John Kennedy or Abraham Lincoln. It is a just a comic book character,he could be any color and it wouldn’t affect the plot at all.

And you don’t have to be the “pc crowd” to appreciate a diverse comic book movie where the good looking skinny white man isn’t always the one saving everybody.
Every single one of your comments was stupid and idiotic and so are you.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

Actually, they aren’t idiotic. You’re ignorant to the universe that is comics. Catwoman staring Berry did terrible as well as caused a lot of outrage in fans who have grown up with the comics and/or television series. While I can get your offense at the comments above there is still a little bit of truth. Even if they aren’t real people, it’s still a very active community that support the fictional character.

The comic world does have characters of race and they should be used much more than they are. Personally I’m aching to see Black Panther and Idris would be absolutely awesome as the character. Or using Jon Stewart as the active Green Lantern instead of Hal for the upcoming Justice League movie

      • Side-Eye says:

@Dommy Dearest Yeah, let’s just act like that Catwoman movie doesn’t exist, shall we? I just want to know how Halle Berry is an Oscar-nominated actress, and how not one person in that studio read a Catwoman comic before deciding to put money towards making a movie out of it?

And yes, a lot of the people I see who bring on these stunt casting mess(and who like to tokenize gender identity and race/culture) never seem to be big fans of the comics themselves and like to see this type of pseudo-diversity for the sake of seeing it, without bothering to recognize the less paid attention to minority characters that already exist.

It’s funny about the Jon Stewart thing actually–I grew up watching Justice League Unlimited and loved the black version of the Green Lantern(still do :)) because it was the only one I knew but my friend always watched the original first and so disagrees with his character for some of the same reasons I disagree with making Batman black above)but if they were going to do it, at least Jon Stewart is canon and would work quite well. Actually–I’d rather see Elba as Jon instead of Black Panther and Djimon Honsou as Panther.(Though admittedly after taking a peek at that Mandela trailer…I think he might fit both.)

  24. ALG says:

Nolan has said that he won’t be directly involved with the new Batman/Superman/Justice League crap, but I can see Wes making a case for himself with Nolan anyway and trying to get in good with the right people at WB and DC Comics. However, his drugging past is a huge strike against him, considering what losing Heath Ledger to a drug addiction cost WB with the Dark Knight trilogy.

I don’t think that Wes is special or talented enough to overcome that.

My pick for Batman? I hope they go older, actually. Not that Bale’s 39 years is *young*, mind you. Jim Caviezel would totally rock the Bruce Wayne and Batman roles. He’s already basically playing those roles on Person of Interest.

  25. Emily C. says:

Everything about this movie just sounds terrible.

  26. lower-case deb says:

i keep thinking, bring back Clooney and the nipplesuit.

  27. toto says:

yes please i always loved him since four feathers.

  28. CatyH says:

Came here to post simply YES!! And I was a nonbeliever in another following bale, but he would be perfect.

  29. lylaooo says:

i don´t know wwhy i keep forgetting this man..he is a good actor and is handosme..but i always forget him!

  30. Samtha says:

I have the biggest soft spot for Wes, but I’m not sold on him as Batman. He has the intensity, but I’m not sure he has the physicality for it.

I’m really into the idea of Chiwetel Ejiofor or Michael Ealy for the role, though I doubt Warner Brothers has the balls to cast a non-white actor.

  31. I Choose Me says:

Dunno if I see him as batman but I’m glad to see him in movies again.

  32. E-v-E says:

just by the pictures and a memory of those American Beauty moments, I could see him as a Batman, but again, the case of two handsome model-like men in a weak script (because Goyer is writing again, and MOS was a disaster, imo, so were most of his films where he didn’t co-write turnes out), it’s just can’t look right, even if Wes does outact Henry (agree, no charisma, but I’ve seen far worse actors). JGL could pull it if they continue the story, but apparently they won’t, so who else.. hmm.. Fassy? Cumby? 😀 oh, I know, R Patz. To this day I haven’t seen any of his films, just clips, but he’s cute, pulls tortured and occassionally bland, would not takeover the film, has a fanbase, needs to bulk up, I see a great opportunity for the studio and his career 😉

  33. Side-Eye says:

None of these Bruce Wayne casting possibilities seem right to me.

    • Raquel says:

My feelings are: if they can’t get Bale to do it, it’s a mistake.

      • Side-Eye says:

Basically. I try to keep an open-mind, because it’s going to happen no matter how much I complain, but Christ, all these choices are just awful. People on tumblr were trying to push Jensen Ackles and that dude from freaking Teen Wolf or whatever for the role, and I felt like ripping my hair out.

      • stace says:

I agree so much. Christian Bale is Batman PERIOD. Know someone who is very interested in all this JL talk, so excitement

  34. Becky says:

    nooooooooooo

  35. ChocoChipDstryr says:

He needs to star in a movie called ‘Psycho Eyes’, costarring him and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

  36. Anna says:

Guys…you do know that Cavill was universally praised for his perdormance, right? It’s not like he deserves an oscar…but his take on the character received rave reviews and the fans loved him.Apparently, the actor who will play Batmab has to bring his A game.I have not seen MOS yet BUT i did see the Tudors and Cavill was great in it.He has talent (imo) …whether he is using it or not is another thing.

  37. Renee says:

I’d rather have Wes Bentley replace Henry Cavill as Superman and go back to the drawing board for a Batman. There is no rush for a reboot, take your time people and try not to eff this up!
