Zooey Deschanel in ice-blue J.Mendel at the Emmys: beautiful or budget?

Zooey Deschanel was one of the first people on the red carpet and I kind of thought she was one of the best dressed ladies of the night. When I first saw her ice-blue J. Mendel, I thought, “Oh, this is going to be a good red carpet!” But instead of setting the tone for a good fashion evening, most gowns were a let-down after Zooey. The silhouette was perfect for her, the color brought out her Bambi eyes and the fit was perfect. I kind of wish it was a different, less shiny fabric, but nobody’s perfect. PS… Check out Zooey’s crazy bling & manicure.

Zooey and her sister Emily Deschanel presented early in the evening. Emily wore this “custom vegan gown” by Houghton. It might be ethical, but it’s not cute.

Ireland Baldwin was her dad’s Emmy date, which surprised me. Alec’s trophy wife loves cameras, so I thought Hilaria would be there by hook or by crook. But Alec brought Ireland instead. Ireland wore Amanda Wakely Atelier. Boring. Blah.

And I’m sorry, but Carrie Underwood was horrible. Her voice sounded bad and she has no business singing “Yesterday”. And her Romona Keveza gown was so boringly princess-y. She never changes up her look whatsoever. She always looks like a bitchy pageant girl.

    I like Emily Deschanel dress.

    The others not so much

Zooey’s gown isn’t bad and the color accents her beautiful eyes, but there’s just too much going on there — the neckline slit, the deep slit at the hem, the sash. Subtract one of those and it would look alot better.

I agree but what ruined Zooey’s gown for me was her matching shoes. I hate matching shoes with a gown. Makes it look cheap.

    • Zoid says:

I disliked her gown because it makes her boobs look really low down/saggy. I doubt they are so it must be the odd looking slit doing it. Optical illusion!

  3. Lizzie says:

Let’s be honest. The fashion this year is just budget.
It’s all second tier designers like Monique Lhuiller, J Medel etc.
Just budget sparkly bridesmaid rubbish. It’s not fashion. It’s stuff my grandmother thinks is pretty.

I liked Zooey’s too, a bit more simplified and elegant than she usually goes for.
I sort of liked Ireland’s dress, but I find her kind of annoying.
Carrie always looking like a Barbie doll. The color is pretty though.

  5. Spooks says:

Zoey looked amazing. The best I’ve ever seen her. Emily looked nice, too.

  6. Anna says:

‘Bitchy Pageant Girl’ is about right for Underwood.

But Zooey looks like a saucy Mother of the Bride.

  7. Lindsey says:

“Custom vegan gown” is the most pretentious thing I’ve heard all day. Thanks.

    • themummy says:

Considering many of the gowns were vegan by default anyway (most clothes are, if they aren’t silk, wool, or fur)…yeah. I’m sure that wasn’t her description of the gown, though, rather it was likely the media’s description.

    • Shelly says:

Lol, I was thinking the same thing! WTH is a custom vegan gown anyway? I mean I get it, but c’mon. Pretentious is right.

    • Vesta says:

“Custom vegan gown” – That’s a great term. Isn’t CVG the new LBD?

Zooey looks stoned, or like she did her makeup in the car and poked herself in the eye.

she should have colored in her lower water line, because it makes it look like she stuck fake lashes on the bottom of her eye and didn’t get them close enough to look realistic…

is it me or does she always look old and bored…whenever I see her, her face seems to say “i’ve done this for years, I know you want to see me here, but really, I’d rather be at home smoking pot. I’m too old for this shit, but behold my bangs!”

  9. It'sJustBlanche says:

Please tell me that Zooey wears extensions because inher hair is naturally that thick I will cry.

    • A says:

      It’s a half wig/wiglet

    • Bronwyn says:

I really doubt she wears wigs. I have the same type of hair, super thick and long. with the right hair spray and blow out, the sky is the limit!

    • loveisthecoal says:

Oh, I always have major hair envy of Zooey. I have super-fine hair and trees just no way it will ever look like this without help. Hmm…maybe I should invest in one of these wiglets you ladies speak of. 😉

Zooey looked lovely! And I love her mani. She always likes to have fun with it, very cute.

  11. smee says:

I love Zooey D’s dress! It looks like a vintage 1960s gown with a modern twist. If there is any shininess, it’s from being silk (I’m guessing) instead of some gross synthetic material. The fit is perfect and she looks fantastic.

  12. Kiddo says:

I’m all twee-ed out. It’s okay, the color is nice on her, but it resembles how I imagine the standard 1960’s bridesmaid’s gown. I would have liked it better without the big wrap or bow, whatever that is.

  13. Diana says:

Zooey’s whole look was a definitive win. Emily’s dress might be fug, but my god that face is gorgeous, and bitchy and all I still love Carrie.

  14. J.Mo says:

I love Ireland’s dress but she is a bore to look at. As boring as Carrie Underwood’s dress was it was gorgeous, perhaps it needed someone with black hair in a loose up-do and a dramatic black beaded bib necklace. Not many necklaces with all of these simple dresses.

  15. apsutter says:

Beautiful! I just started watching New Girl this summer and it is so freaking funny. Seriously, it makes me laugh the hardest of any tv show(except for Parks and Rec)

  16. Squeeg says:

You are too hard on these women. They all look beautiful.

  17. flutters says:

I don’t love the shape of Zooey Deschanel’s dress at the bottom, I think it hangs strangely. But I do love her hair and the color of the dress on her and I bet the dress looked better in motion.

I actually like that dress on Carrie Underwood. Great color, very nice hair, too. She sounded lovely singing “Yesterday,” too. I’m sure her singing a twangy version of the song offended some people but she gave a very sensitive treatment of the song in my opinion.

  18. Thiajoka says:

Zooey’s thumbnail looks like it has a handlebar mustache. Other than that, one of the better looks of the night. Why do so many of these women either dress like they are attending prom, are a bridesmaid or are on RuPaul’s drag show as a contestant (not looking SPECIFICALLY at you for that one, Heidi Klum, but keep it in mind anyway)?
