Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer film ‘U.N.C.L.E.’ in Rome: who would you rather?

That Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit trailer just gave me Cold War nostalgia, which is probably why I’m finally covering some of these photos from the film shoot for The Man from U.N.C.L.E., starring Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill. The Vespa photos are from last night, the shadowy pics of Henry standing alone are from a few weeks ago (I just never got around to publishing them). So far the film shoot (it’s been directed by Guy Ritchie) has just been taking place in Rome.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of The Man from UNCLE television show, so I don’t really know what’s supposed to be happening in these pics. From what I gather, Henry is playing the American spy (Napoleon Solo) and Armie Hammer is playing the Soviet spy (Illya Kuryakin). I’m curious to hear Armie’s attempt at a Russian accent. Will it be better or worse than Kenneth Branagh’s? The film also features Hugh Grant, Alicia Vikander (who is everywhere these days) and Jared Harris. The plot involves Illya and Napoleon working together to defeat a “criminal organization”. In the 1960s.

But just enjoy them on the Vespa. I would have thought that Armie would be the driver’s seat and that Henry would cling to him. But maybe not. I wonder if Armie and Henry get along whatsoever? Armie seems like a total extrovert and Henry seems… I don’t know, quiet and sort of nerdy. Maybe Armie will pull him out of his shell. Or maybe they already hate each other, the brash, loud American and the quiet, contained Englishman.

Who would you rather though? I can’t decide. They’re both sexy in different ways. Eh, I’d probably do Henry.

Unless Henry is a secret, super freak a la E. Edward Grey (from Secretary), I just like to look at him. He’s so stiff all the time, but to be fair, that’s how I think I would be if I were a celebrity. You’d all be on here talking about how boring I am, and the only pap pictures you’d see of me is going to the gas station to buy donuts 😉

    • Andrea says:

Sometimes I think our celebrity infused culture confuses class with boring.

Not every celeb–man or woman—has the desire to reveal all pieces of themselves in press. Some people are just naturally more private. It doesn’t mean they aren’t good in bed.

I’ll take a man like Henry in my bed any day of the week over a guy in love with his own voice.

      • LadyMTL says:

This +100. I find it refreshing to see someone who’s not all up their own ass or getting ridiculous on Twitter (coughHiddlestoncough).

Henry Cavill can for sure come off as uptight or stiff but what’s the big deal? Also, if he really is as big a nerd-boy as he’s said he is, maybe he’s still a bit uncomfortable with all of this? Besides, he looks awesome in that grey suit! 😀

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Well I’m not saying that being private is boring–there’s a way to do it, without coming off as so utterly joyless, almost. Like I watched him on Graham Norton for a few minutes–he told this story about his how nephew went to school telling everyone his uncle was Superman–that could’ve been a really funny story, if he’d smiled or laughed while telling it–the closest he got was a sort of half smirk/smile while telling it.

He just always looks uncomfortable to me in interviews and he’s what? 30?

      • geraldine says:

it seems that he is more shy than we realize lol (if you prefer… since 2:32min) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp94z-o1-6g

      • Anname says:

It’s not a “classy” thing or privacy thing, it’s a lack of charisma thing. He appears to be a great guy, and obviously gorgeous, but he seems to be missing that intanglible extra thing – the part that keeps people’s attention past the initial interest.

  2. Elodie says:

HENRY HENRY HENRY aaaaaaand HENRY! ! ! !

That young man is unspeakably beautiful. IDGAF whether he’s bland or else I’d gladly tap that!.. unnnnffffff gimme gimme gimme noooowwwww!

We shall meet one day sir Cavill, we shall meet…

*pours water on self to calm tits down*

(P.S: I also find Mr Raspy Voice aka Jared Harris incredibly attractive.)

    • Vesta says:

You have convinced me 101% that Henry belongs to you 😉

      • Elodie says:

Ohhh yesss he is alright \o/

And a film colleague sent me that Empire list thing today he’s number 3… I wasn’t even laughing at the ranking, I was actually more laughing at the crappy nickname the friggin’ Cavill tumblr fans gave, calling themselves Cavillers? okay, bye leave MAH boy alone!

      • Vesta says:

Cavillers? Eh, it sounds like a town in France. Why wasn’t it even something like Cavillovers…

  3. Jen says:

Why are they making a movie of another old tv show that only senior citizens ever cared about? Did The Lone Ranger teach them (and Armie) nothing?

    • Tiffany says:

With Guy Ritchie taking the reigns, I think it going to be some shade of awesome. This one I will give a chance.

  4. Mirella says:

    Henry.

  5. Leah says:

Henry looks like a ken doll and has a duller than dull personality so it would have to be armie.

  6. Tish says:

Cavill is boringly beautiful… I’ll do him! Haha.

  7. Tig says:

Why pick? LOL! Can’t imagine Armie folding in half to sit on a Vespa! Glad to see Jared Harris is in this- he’s a great actor.

  8. Lou says:

Neither. That Vespa pic, legit made me spit out my coffee…

    • Vesta says:

I know. I guess I shouldn’t laugh, but two giant men forced on a little vanilla coloured Vespa…

  9. Sabrina says:

Neither of them. I really don’t get the appeal of Armie, but that’s probably because I don’t usually find guys with light hair attractive. I prefer guys with dark hair.

Henry always seems to look like an uncomfortable Ken doll to me and therefore I can’t find him attractive. I preferred him when he was younger as he didn’t seem so uncomfortable and stiff then.

    • fingerbinger says:

Don’t get the Armie appeal either. He’s all teeth.

    • loveisthecoal says:

Hah, I was just coming here to say that Armie Hammer looks like a Ken doll. I would hit it with Henry, but not looking like this– only if he grows his hair out a bit and has some beard scruff.

    • gefeylich says:

Actually, I think they look too much alike and also like generic TV ad models for Macy’s, so neither.

Slightly disappointed in this casting, because both of these guys seem personality-free. I mean, both are eons better than that lummox Channing Tatum who was rumored to play Solo, but oh well. RDJ would have been a better Solo; Alexander Skarsgard would have been a brilliant Kuryakin.

      Meh.

  10. QQ says:

Neither, They both look like cardboard cutouts of men… Or like Ken Dolls with plastic blank crotches

    • Anna says:

Hugh Grant was on set too, and the age is making him look interesting. Good interesting. I’d do him. And then Armie.

      • Suzeque says:

Yeah, I’d hit Hugh Grant before either of the boring doublemint twins. They are both very attractive men but have zero charisma. Henry looks so large and wide in that suit – such a big man. I think if he were slimmer, he could wear a suit better, otherwise, he looks very bulky. No shade on his past overweight issue, because he’s not overweight now, eh I guess he just doesn’t appeal to me.

  11. Andrea says:

Henry. All the time. He’s never boring to me. I like shy, upstanding guys. Henry is the fairylale Prince. He’s a total dork and he needs better PR and he’s made some missteps but I still adore him.

Henry suits period pieces quite well. He fits that vintage look well. I can envision him as a guy from the 70’s or the 17th century.

    • OhDear says:

He’s never boring to me. I like shy, upstanding guys.

Same here. Could use some better PR people, though, who’ll just let him be him.

      • Delorb says:

If Henry’s PR people allowed him to be himself, he’d lose a lot of fans. Well his homophobe fans that is.

  12. Mia4S says:

Well, it could have been worse. Tom Cruise was originally going to star. I’ve actually seen this show even though it was well before my time. The early episodes were fun and very good. I can’t say I’m all that excited by the movie though. Pretty…but I fear a possible charisma vacuum :-/

  13. lili says:

Armie. He is a bit green but has big potential.

  14. MeowuiRose says:

Henry looks like a sob… very handsome but he seems high maintenance and that whole Kayley Cucoo situation was very odd.

  15. Allison says:

Well, since Cavill was the dong in my dreams last night, he gets the W.

  16. Summer says:

    I’ll go with Armie.

  17. Vesta says:

“Henry is playing the American spy and Armie is playing the Soviet spy”

Hmmm… Why am I not buying that scenario?

I’m very picky about men today, but I say Henry – he’s a bit like a lost puppy, and I would cuddle him.

  18. Samantha says:

    Armie, definitely. He’s dreeeeamy.

  19. toto says:

How could such beautiful men combined in one place be so meh?
Is it charisma or somthing else I’ am missing?

  20. Dorothy#1 says:

I chose option C – HUGH GRANT!!!! I will always chose Hugh. <3❤

  21. Feebee says:

That grey suit is cut to perfection. I suppose it helps that the body beneath it is too.

I’d be willing to take my time with Henry,,,, if he turned out to be a bit boring at least he’d be nice to look at.

  22. mslewis says:

I really don’t understand why they want to make a movie of “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” It was a terrible TV series that hardly anyone remembers. I remember it and I can’t imagine it being a movie. This thing is going to turn out just like “Lone Ranger,” a total bomb. Poor Armie.

But Henry Cavill is adorable and unlike Armie, he can act so his career will still be strong after this bomb. He just needs to start making better decisions about what movie he stars in.

    • Original A says:

Guy Ritchie though, and the fact they have a good supporting cast. I think this may be surprisingly good.

    • Anna says:

It is by Guy Ritchie,it has a great cast(i worship Henry,Elizabeth Debicki and Jared Harris) AND the writers are pretty awesome too.I will definetly check this out.

    • swack says:

So everytime I see Ducky on NCIS my heart goes pit-a-pat. He was the original Illya Kuryakin with Robert Vaughn as Napolean Solo. They both have aged well!!! In fact in one of the NCIS episodes one of the agents wonders aloud what Ducky would have looked like in his younger years and Gibbs says “Like Illya Kuryakin” and I chuckle every time because I know many that are not from my generation just don’t get the reference. They have remade other tv series that have been successful – one is Mission Impossible.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I think this will be more like Mission Impossible than The Lone Ranger…I hope so, anyway!

  23. Christina says:

Both. Preferably at the same time.

  24. Deej says:

I’d bang Henry like a screen door in a hurricane. That is all.

  25. LAK says:

    I choose Hugh Grant!!

  26. Vee says:

Both are adorable to look at but if I’m forced to choose, Henry! 😉

This movie looks like it could be great fun, I’ll see it!

  27. d says:

Henry. I sense restraint from him, not stiffness or woodeness or whatever. And I find that…attractive. But anyway, so what if he’s a bit stiff in public? If he treats people right, if he’s better one on one, THAT IS FINE! I prefer to believe that he’s really an all right dude and just suffers a bit from bad PR. But he’s in a Guy Ritchie movie…I think he’ll be okay!

  28. Anna says:

The dream scenario would be : First a night with Henry, then a sandwitch with both of them and the Armie would be my Henry rebound. But because the sex was soooo good Henry would come for a rematch…many times.

But if i had to choose one…it would be Henry.FIrst of all,i think i haven’t seen a face more gorgeous than Henry’s and he also has the body that he has (AND CHAIST HAIR) and i really like his personality.I like that he is so uncomfrotable and goofy(in his paps pictures, which are just adorable) yet so serious and smart(the guy can speak 5 languages for the love of god).

Anyway,i think Henry and Armie do get along. There were pictures outside the UNCLE set with the two of them hanging out (some of them with Elizabeth Debicki) and i have also seen a lot “on set” pictures that they have fun. While in London,i think people would spot Henry,Armie and Jared Harris at local pubs all the time.

    • Anna says:

And i write all these things while my boyfriend of 2+year is in the next romm playing Modern Warfar…DAMN YOU HENRY you are going to end my relatiosnhip!

  29. magpie says:

Both, I’m small enough I could fit in-between them on that Vespa.

  30. margaret says:

Henry and Armie? they get along very well, had party together during filming in London. Even with Henry’s brother, the boy with striped shirt.

  31. Jen says:

I LOVED the original Man From U.N.C.L.E. – watched as syndicated reruns. I guess i’m probably older than most posters here but when I was growing up, television production was so different. Kids watched Lawrence Welk with their parents. Love Boat was THE big show. Soul Train was huge. But you can’t watch a lot of it now without cringing. But yes, of course it can’t compare to what you get nowadays (Homeland, Mad Men, Breaking Bad), but it was good for that era. Try comparing a Star Trek episode to the latest version.

    That being said? Armie 100%

  32. MaryBeth says:

Good God… CAVILL! YUM!!!!!! He is absolutely GORGEOUS.

  33. The Original Mia says:

Henry. Armie is overrated looks-wise. Never understood the appeal. Henry…grr…give me.

  34. geraldine says:

    HENRY!

btw… I see these pics and I think Henry = James Bond

    http://goo.gl/BLe4I7 http://goo.gl/LhQE4o

  35. grabbyhands says:

The Cav any day. Armie Hammer is so dreadfully dull and bland. I don’t get the attraction.

  36. UmamiMommy says:

Sandwich me up…Spy vs. Spy just got a whole lot sexier.

  37. Miss M says:

    Henry Vanilla Cavill!

  38. anais says:

I just wish Henry was straight.

  39. Delorb says:

Neither. Both are vanilla bland, although Armie’s wife getting arrested for pot, spikes him up a bit. This movie will be the charisma challenged leading the charisma challenged.

  40. lisa2 says:

I just don’t think either of them have that thing.

OK.. I will say if they had made this about 10 years ago. George and Brad would have been so freaking awesome in it. My mind can’t let that pairing go. I know I won’t pay to see this in Theater. I’ll check it out on dvd.
