Claire Danes covers Interview Mag, talks ‘Homeland’ & bipolar disorders (spoilers)

Claire Danes is the cover girl for the new issue of Interview Mag. She looks pretty glam, right? Like… Jerry Hall in the 1980s. I wouldn’t think that the Jerry Hall styling would work on Claire, but it really does. Claire’s interview was conducted by Dustin Hoffman – you can read the full Interview piece here. I’m not going to pretend like Claire is the best interview ever or anything. She’s an interesting, smart and talented woman, but on the page, she’s very boring. Some highlights:

Her experience on a TV show: “I’d actually only done one series before Homeland—and I was 14 when I did it, and we only made 19 episodes—so Homeland has really been my first time aging with a character and experiencing her develop and change. I know that this is not an uncommon story, but I got excited again about television from watching The Wire. That show blew me away; I just could not believe how enormous and layered this world was that they’d created, and how deeply I could delve into it. It was just so thrilling to watch a show like that as an audience member that I became interested in getting involved in something like that on the other side, as a performer. But working on Homeland has been very rewarding. I really enjoy the relationship that an actor has with a team of writers on a show like ours. It’s a very intimate process. You really have to work in tandem.”

Playing Carrie: “She seemed completely alien to me—completely other. She still does in some ways, but I’ve spent a lot of time with her now. Because she is so different from who I am, she is that much more enjoyable—and, in some ways, easier—to play. Carrie can be manic. Last season, she was pretty consistently medicated, so there were no episodes where she was really spiraling out, but those scenes are kind of fun to play. In the first season, when she really spun out initially, it was kind of a euphoric mania, and that was interesting because I found that I got a bit of a contact high from it—It was exhausting, but it was also exhilarating. But there are different types of mania. At the beginning of this season we’re in now, she’s a different kind of manic—an agitated manic—and all of those manic scenes just happened to be lumped together in the same couple of days at the very beginning of filming. At the time, I had a 6-month-old son, and I was in a completely antithetical state of being. I had just come out of my mommy cocoon and my cushy, mushy love planet. So entering that mania at that point was not as enjoyable.”

[From Interview Mag]

She talks a lot about her research into bipolar disorder, and she and Dustin say something interesting, which I’ve never heard before – that when you’re bipolar and you go off your meds, the high is similar to snorting cocaine. Is that really how it is?

Anyway, the real reason I wanted to cover this is because in this weekend’s episode of Homeland, EVERYTHING CHANGED.

SPOILERS SPOILERS for last night’s Homeland.

So, yeah… “Still Positive” was one of the crazier episodes of “Homeland” in a while. I’m developing a theory about Homeland, based on this season and last season – my theory is that it takes a good three episodes for the Homeland writers to warm up. The first three episodes of this season were too Dana-heavy when it should have been about Saul and Carrie… and even Brody in his sketchy Tower of David. We’ve only seen Brody in one episode so far, right? Anyway, the past two episodes have been really good because we’re back to high-level stagecraft, double-crosses and denouements. At first I was impressed with this new Iranian terrorist, but after last night’s episode… OMG. He’s PSYCHO. Who kills his ex-wife with a jagged bottle?! A psycho. I’m not even being facetious. This guy is a stone-cold psychopath who will screw them over. This is not some ideological purist like Abu Nazir.

Also, the huge spoiler… Carrie is pregnant? I didn’t see that one coming. It’s obviously Brody’s baby because all of those pregnancy tests (YIKES) and the timing. Is this season of Homeland going to feature an abortion?

    AMAZING COVER!!!!!!!

  2. mimi says:

She looks beautiful. I love all the pictures from this photoshoot. Love her on Homeland. I’ve been a fan of hers since My So Called Life.

    • Nono says:

This is the best photo shoot she’s ever done. Just beeeaaauuutiful.

I’ve never been much of a fan of her, and I don’t think Homeland is actually good, but I enjoy it enough to watch it every week, thanks to Lewis and Patinkin.

      (Damian’s gingerness makes me swoon.)

  3. carol says:

I like the pics, they’re flattering and classic

  4. Sullivan says:

Lovely photos. She is a talented, fearless actor.

  5. Jen says:

The “Carrie is pregnant!!!” story is SO DAMN STUPID. I am done with this show.

Not to mention the idea of Dana Brody just randomly moving out and living with a stranger and her mom just being all like, “Oh, here, take this gift card with $300 on it. See ya!”

    • QQ says:

LISTEN!! last week when far from being APOLOGETIC to her mom over stealing her car, running away, selling her car this asshole goes “mom, Im Ok” i was LIVID!! my mom woulda beat the shit out of me…

Also I bet on abortion too cause this crazy ingrate bipolar ass Carrie cant possibly be having a baby now…what WOULD piss me off at this point is if :

      A) they continue peddling this star crossed lovers story with Brody…if they are astute he never gets seen much again except as a gross junkie

      B) I see the eyes Quinn is giving her etc…that shit cant happen either

I want this stupid ass super secrety secret cool forward thinking chick to get herself together, learn manners when dealing with her staff and Not be entangled with a dude she has no business being with

  6. Monkey Towz says:

Bi-polar person here & yes the highs are better than sex/drugs/rocknroll. On the flip side, the lows equal the highs as far as intensity goes. Medication is very helpful but they kill the “buzz”.

    • Barb the Evil Genius says:

I’m bipolar as well. I agree that some highs are great, but then there is manic where you hate everyone and everything and you want to punch a wall, and mixed, where you are manic and agitated. Those are the worst.

  7. ShazBot says:

    Spoiler…re: the pregnancy

All I can think is how irresponsible she is to be banging strange, boozing it up, and subjecting herself to all the psych ward meds when she KNEW she was pregnant. That poor baby.

Also, they totally would have discovered it in the hospital during a blood test.

Also, who just let’s their teenager move out, no idea where she’s going and with whom, no questions asked???

    • QQ says:

Oh Shit so you think it could be from that rando she was porking the other episodes?!!? FWIW i still think is Brody’s

Who lets their teen run game on them??? Well Jessica, That’s who… I love that the Brody Boy mightcould as well be a mime they give him like 3 lines per ep LOL

      • Mira says:

Ain’t it already a little more than three months since the Langley bombing? Meaning it can’t be Brody’s, non?

      • Addison says:

It’s been six months since the bombing. So no, it is not Brody’s. So now we know why she went off her meds.

  8. eliza says:

I am sorry but I have found Homeland to be very flat this season. I have fallen asleep two weeks in a row I have been so bored. The pregnancy storyline is so dumb. I am also getting super annoyed with Carrie.

  9. stellalovejoydiver says:

I only watched a few episodes of Homeland, but she looks really pretty here.
Her and Hugh Dancy are my favourite TV couple, I love Hannibal.

  10. Bird says:

I’m not really a fan of hers, but these pics are gorgeous.

  11. bns says:

    Gorgeous.

  12. Ari says:

It always weirds me out that the guy who plays quinn how much he reminds me of darcy LOL its ike how do you even control yourself around that much hotness when they resemble your hot husband so much hahaha…anyway yeah i dont get the pregnant storyline either

  13. Lucy says:

Unpopular opinion: I don’t think these are her best shots. The styling is great, but she reminds me of Goop in here. And that’s NOT a good look. It’s not her fault at all, though.

  14. wtf says:

I like the photographs EXCEPT, what is up with her armpits? Is is necessary to photoshop armpits into barbie-smooth-oblivion? I get that nobody wants to see a bunch of hair, but DAMN, can we at least see the regular folds of skin that human beings have?!?!
    Ok. Rant Over.

    Love the show btw….

  15. locheed says:

Is it me, or does her neck in the first couple of photos look freakishly long?

  16. Ginger says:

Yes Kaiser the mania while unmedicated is remarkably similar to being on speed of some sort. Your emotions are up, you are euphoric, you feel and believe that you can do anything. All you want to do is spend unwisely, have sex and never sleep. It can be a very self destructive time. The interesting thing is that bipolar people are more likely to commit suicide while manic versus being depressed. The euphoric mania (and the weight gain) are the number one reasons a bipolar person will ditch their meds. Second only to the delusion that you are now. “Fine” and can go off them.

  17. mkyar says:

Um. Claire Danes’ face is her best feature. Why would they turn her into her and Kiki Dunst’s daughter?

  18. Ginger says:

I’m sorry I think these photos are photoshopped into oblivion. she no longer looks like herself or even human…more like a fembot

  19. Carry says:

The photos are nice but she looks the same in every picture, it reminds me of every Jessica Alba photo shot.

  20. RJ says:

I’ve loved Claire since My So Called life, she is an amazing & hard working actress. I like how she’s willing to take risks and have her character look & act “unattractive”. I even forgave her for the Billy Crudup f***up after seeing her in the HBO Temple Grandin movie, she totally nailed that character.
Dana must be taking lessons from her in how to tremble your lower lip/chin before crying. I think her mom realizes there is nothing she can do to help her & letting her go may save her life. They are all victims in that family.
Carrie & her doctors would have known about the pregnancy in the psych hospital, but they obviously chose not to show that plot twist. Remember, her hospital stay was an elaborate ruse to draw out “Giovanni”, or whatever the heck his name is. She wasn’t in for very long.
I think this season is great so far, I don’t know what the heck they are going to do with Brody, but I have a feeling next week’s episode will be a critical one.

  21. GIRLFACE says:

    Love it! She is awesome.

  22. Amory says:

I know everyone loves her now, but to me, I still think of her as the girl who got together with Billy Crudup when Mary Louise was was with him for 7 years, and was 7 months pregnant with their child. There is an ick factor there that I can’t get past.
