Chris Hemsworth is living on ‘500 to 600 calories’ a day: ‘You go to bed hungry’

Here are some photos of Chris Hemsworth at Good Morning America yesterday. He must have flown into NYC just after the LA premiere of Thor 2 on Monday night. Is it okay if I’m not feeling him in these photos? He looks exhausted and his hair… it’s not good. I’m including the GMA interview below, but it’s nothing special.

On the other hand, Chris stopped by Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night and he ended up talking about his injured hand (he dislocated a finger!) and his new extreme diet. Apparently, Chris is already at work on Heart of the Sea, the true story of the events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. Chris says: “A bunch of sailors in a whaling ship get struck by a whale, the ship sinks and they jump onto the small rafts and drift for 90 days. And basically they begin to die and eat each other … a romantic comedy. And we have to get rather skinny. So we’re on 500 or 600 calories a day.”

Yes, 600 calories. I could NOT. I don’t see how a big guy like Chris could do that either. He’s going to need to be hospitalized! Chris further explained the rules of his diet: “It ends up being a couple of small salads, a couple of small pieces of protein and that’s kind of it and you go to bed hungry. And then you have like a fasting period of 15 hours, like you stop eating completely, and then you have little meals through the day.” Jesus. Maybe at long last, we’ve discovered the reason why Chris has barely promote Thor 2: The Dark World. It’s because he simply doesn’t have enough energy. It’s because he’s starving himself for what sounds like a really boring, depressing story that no one is going to want to see.

I never care too much about the Hemsworth brothers but they are handsome and fit. However, they could have just hired a skinnier actor to play the role.

    • Jag says:

Exactly! Just look at other actors who lost so much weight for a role, then the movie flopped, and the actor never regained his former hotness.

Let someone else play the role. It sounds like a horrible movie.

    • lucy2 says:

LOL, that was my first thought. Just hire some already skinny guys!

  2. IrishEyes says:

I’m assuming he’s trying to be a method actor? *sigh*

    • Anna says:

I dont think it’s that at all – it’s just he can’t go from being all 250 lbs of muscly Thor Mountain when he has to appear to have been basically starving for 90 days at sea. He says that it’s a cast of 15 dudes and they’re all on this diet right now.

  3. Dani2 says:

500 to 600 calories a day? I’m hungry just thinking about what that’s like.

    • mia girl says:

I think I already ate 500 calories and its only 10:15am…

    • Bread and Circuses says:

**looks at the nutritional info on the back of that baggie of chips she’s eating**

      **starts laughing hysterically**

  4. Anna says:

Aww, my poor cuteness! Let me kiss and make it ALL better.

  5. blue marie says:

He’s still hot, and looking forward to seeing Thor 2 with my mom (she has the biggest crush on him and her reaction when he’s on screen is adorable)

Only 500-600 calories a day? I would be so b-tchy.

  6. V4Real says:

Oh Chrissy boy I have something you can eat before you go to bed and it’s definitely less than 500 calories. 🙂

  7. Angel May says:

    Starving for that Oscar nom.

I’ve done low cal diets, but 600 cal a day for a young very large man is not good. He must get so bitchy.

  8. jinni says:

Can’t the make up people make them look sufficiently malnourished without jeopardizing their health? Or is the chance of getting an Oscar worth the price of possibly having long term health problems?

  9. Mia4S says:

Well the mystery of the missing wifey at the premiere may have a simple explanation. Apparently he walked the red carpet and then immediately left to fly out again. No movie or after party. Even for a famewhore that might have been too much.

It’s not so much the weight loss as the fact that he needs to be in Thor-shape again almost immediately after this film to start Avengers 2. Dangerous stuff.

  10. dremy says:

    Great career move!

  11. starrywonder says:

The real life story is so freaking good though! I think this could be a sleeper hit if marketed the right way. I loved the book when it came out a few years ago.

    • RobN says:

I loved it, too. It’s a fascinating story and could be great on screen. I haven’t seen any of his Thor stuff, but I’d see this.

  12. MonicaQ says:

It’s so weird to see him and Chris Evans and realize their Thor/Captain America forms are not their natural forms–that they put on so much weight and work out so much to do it and they’re naturally tall, slightly lanky, sort of built guys. Not the “GOOD LAWD HAVE MERCY” they are in the movie.

Granted, I am far appreciative of their work. Far. Far. Appreciative.

  13. yeahright says:

    What. I can’t see properly if I don’t eat every 3 hours.

  14. Kit2 says:

If he’s like most people then this extended crash/starvation diet will permanently alter his metabolism. Afterwards he’ll gain weight (fat, not muscle) much more easily than before, and keeping the pudge at bay will take a lot more effort than he’s used to (people who were always naturally thin can suddenly find that they’re naturally plump). Hope they’re all very careful… it can be quite dangerous to drop that much weight quickly… or slowly.

  15. Alexandria says:

After a while you get used to the small amount of calories. So used to it that a regular amount of calories seems like too much to handle. And metabolism can’t be permanently affected; it’s always changing and adapting according to your habits. You will bloat up at first when you go back to eating normal. You will gain weight. But after consistently eating the same amount of “normal” calories you’re body will self-regulate, stabilize, and then normalize.

  16. Miss M says:

For the love of God CHems! I had that intake of calories just during breakfast! 🙂

    • Marty says:

This is why I don’t think Charlie Hunnam(who was a serious contender for Thor) could’ve handled that role. He said he hated getting in shape for Pacific Rim cause they made him stop eating cookies, lol.

  17. T.Fanty says:

Maybe that’s where Elsa went. He ate her. She looks like she might be more protein than fat.

  18. Feebee says:

Between Thor and this weight losing role it will be interesting to see what his natural weight is… That is if he has time to live in it before the inevitable bulk up for another beefy role.

  19. Kate says:

Is he maybe doing some version of 5/2, where you eat normally most days but fast and only eat about 500 calories 2-3 days a week?

He’s not naturally a huge guy, before Thor he was leaner than he is right now.

  20. Cirque28 says:

If you haven’t read “In the Heart of the Sea” by Nathanial Philbrick, please go read it. I know… it sounds uber dull and depressing, but it’s actually a completely riveting story. And beautifully told. Everyone in my family read it and we all LOVED it.

    Also, that’s not much food.

  21. lc says:

Chris is developing one of these bodybuilder faces, and they are never a pretty sight. Basically shriveled skin on bones.

  22. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

He’s so hot. And I love the tone of his voice (Aussie accents don’t really do it for me, but his voice is great).

  23. Jacqueline says:

I have days when I do long runs and I may burn 2,300 calories at a shot. Most of it is a wash, versus what I eat (which is a lot), and I probably end up with that many calories left to burn.

  24. ThunderGoddess says:

500 calories a day? I am a midget woman and I usually have to eat 1200 calories a day! I can’t even go under 600 when I fast.. That is ridiculous!
Am I wrong or he said in an interview that during the shooting of Rush he had to diet and his wife hated him? Maybe we solved the riddle about the missing-at-the-premiere wife….
