Lupita Nyong’o in Lanvin at the Gotham Awards: Audrey Hepburn-esque?

wenn20900169

Here are some beautiful photos of our (collective!) crush of the year, Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita brought her fashion & lipstick game to last night’s Gotham Awards, one of about a million award shows that Lupita will be attending in the next three months. Lupita wore a (winter) white Lanvin dress and Lanvin satin shoes (in red!) to the event. I love when she wears white. It makes her skin look glowing and gorgeous. You know what I like about this dress? It reminds me of Audrey Hepburn. I love that Lupita is that bold to make a sartorial reference to Audrey, and the comparison is apt too – both are beautiful, petite women with amazing faces and great style, and Lupita might win an Oscar for her first film, just like Audrey. I’m also including a photo of Lupita in her coat, which is also pretty stunning. This young woman knows how to dress, doesn’t she? She’s the Eddie Redmayne of the 2013-14 Oscar season!

As for Lupita’s chances for that big prize… I think she’s got a pretty good chance. Who is her biggest competition thus far? Julia Roberts? Oprah? Julia’s already got an Oscar and I’m not convinced that the Academy wants to give her another one. Oprah’s never won an acting Oscar, but she’s richer than God and she’s already got a million awards, so I’m not convinced the Academy would give Oprah another Oscar either. So… maybe it is Lupita. After her amazing performance in 12 Years a Slave, she might be this year’s Jennifer Lawrence (a young actress who is just riding on a wave of admiration and affection).

Also: Lupita was just nominated for an Independent Spirit Award last week – you can see the full list of nominees here. Fassbender got nominated too, as did Chiwetel Ejiofor.

I’m including additional photos from last night’s Gotham Awards – Jared Leto (who might totally win an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club), Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy, Oscar Isaac, Shailene Woodley, and Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones.

Her face is so flawless looking here, it makes me want to cry.

    • loveisthecoal says:

I actually gasped when I opened the article and saw the whole picture. She’s just awesome.

    • mytbean says:

I know! Every time I see her I’m stunned. Her skin is glowing and flawless. And her expression always seem to radiate this inner humble beauty too.

  2. Grant says:

She is frickin’ flawless. So beautiful, and the outfit looks even better with the coat. She doesn’t even have to try, her beauty is so effortless.

    • Josephine says:

I agree about the coat – my goodness she is gorgeous and classic. Wish more of Hollywood would follow her lead.

    • Florc says:

Such a classic simple look. I want that coat. Could never pull off that dress. When an actor is wearing too much make up I think it distracts. Her skin looks clear and flawless. Jealous!!!

    • Erm says:

      Absolute perfection.

  3. Buckwild says:

    OSCAR ISSAC! That is all.

  4. blue marie says:

I would say that she looks beautiful here but I’m not feeling the haircut, everything else is fantastic though.

    The rest are just meh.

    • Aussie girl says:

I love her hair! I just love that it’s short and natural. But I have to say her skin has a glow that is just beautiful

      • kaligula says:

I love the hair too. So sweet and girlish. Plus a very unique look compared with other starlets. Brilliant choice.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I don’t really like the hair either, I feel like it should be a little bit shorter for the look to work? Maybe she’s growing it out for the Awards season though.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I keep saying this every time I see her, but I am just stunned by her beauty.

    • mia girl says:

      This!

And after having watched her on the Hollywood Reporters’ Actress Roundtable I have to say in addition to beauty she has such poise, a lovely voice and offered thoughtful answers/conversation.
      She is truly lovely.

    • Danskins says:

+1. I love her gorgeous skin – simply stunning.

  6. Spooks says:

She is beautiful, but her fashion never wowed me. And she’s much more than Audrey ( I tend to agree with Emma Thompson about Audrey). And she seems much smarter than JLaw. I hope she doesn’t turn into JLaw who is overexposed and thus annoying.

  7. Celia says:

So far I’ve loved pretty much everyone she has worn but I’m not feeling that dress. She looks like a wedding cake.

    • kaligula says:

I agree. The dress is not wowing me at all. Might just be the way it’s photographed there, though. The coat turns it into a definite win for sure, however. With that on she’s channeling rare old school Hollywood glam, like she usually does. She absolutely radiates charm and loveliness, can’t wait to see more of her.

  8. Sisi says:

Not digging the shoes, but everything else about her look is flawless.

  9. Ashley says:

Her biggest competion is Lawrence so hopeful she can beat her, especially since Oprah would push for her!

  10. CaribbeanLaura says:

Stunning. Once again I wished I lived in a place that had ‘coat weather’

  11. Celine says:

Lawrence supposedly steals Hustle, so hopefully she wins even though Lupita seems nice. But her performance in 12YAS had only two pivotal scenes…not much to do at all. It would def be a political win imo.

    • LAK says:

no of scenes, length of scenes, time spent on screen isn’t a decider if their performance stands out.

Judi Dench won her oscar with only 10minutes of screen time in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. She was and is still memorable in it.

      • Celine says:

yeah but Lupita wasn’t. She is beautiful and lovely, but I don’t think she was memorable or particularly interesting in her portrayal. She was accurate and heartbreaking, but not something unique.

      • lenje says:

I disagree with your comment about Judi Dench, but I get what you mean 😀

      • Bubbles says:

Lawrence will be nominated? Please no.

    • Dandhara Esperanza says:

How can anyone say that Lupita wasn’t memorable? GMAB I got out of the movie and all I could think of was Patsy. To this day, that character haunts me. Honestly, Patsy’s story stole the show. If Lupita didn’t do a good job, no one would remember her.

  12. smee says:

LN is perfection in that dress (and coat). Very ladylike. The color looks fantastic on her.

Amy Poehler looks great and Rashida Jones looks…..interesting? IDC – I love them both!

  13. Dubois says:

    Jared Leto looks so creepy.

  14. Devon says:

    She really is stunning.

  15. ctkat1 says:

I think Jennifer Lawrence is starting to and will continue to surge in Supporting Actress for “American Hustle.” The reviews are still embargoed, but pretty much everyone agrees that she steals every scene she’s in and she and Bradley Cooper are the best bets for acting nods (especially given how tight the Best Actor/Actress categories are).

But will the Academy given Lawrence back-to-back Oscars? Probably not. I think Lupita might be the winner. I expect she will be the only acting award for “12 Years.” I don’t think Chiwetel will win Best Actor, and I think Jared Leto will probably win Supporting Actor.

    • LAK says:

I feel bad for MANDELA because in Cannes and most of the summer months, it was a sure fire bet for best film and best actor {Idris Alba] and now, not a peep. Overtaken by so many other performances.

    • Grant says:

Really? I thought that Lupita & Oprah were still very much the frontrunners for Supporting Actress.

    • ctkat1 says:

Oscar prognosticating changes all of the time, especially since December is always loaded with Oscar hopefuls- American Hustle, Inside Llewellyn Davis, Wolf of Wall Street, Inside the Furnace, Her, Saving Mr. Banks… these all have the potential to shake up the categories.

Lupita and Oprah are probably locks for Oscars, but will the Academy voters want to put Oprah as #1 on their ballots?? I’m not convinced, simply because the Actors branch is the largest branch, and she’s not an actor.

  16. TheOriginalKitten says:

    RAYON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀

Leto was great in Dallas Buyers Club.

Lupita is a vision. That woman is just STUNNING, period, end of story.

Oscar is so hot..I wish we saw more of him.

  17. Suze says:

I don’t even have words for Lupita. Well, I do. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Stylish. Stunning.

    J. Law is on a roll these days, but there may be pushback about giving her back to back Oscars. We’ll see. I haven’t seen 12 Years a Slave, but I hear good things about Lupita’s performance. There’s a chance there.

  18. Stef Leppard says:

Wtf is Rashida wearing?! Is that like a loose, dumpy coat with her bra exposed? Major fail.

Love Lupita. She is absolutely stunning and elegant. I hope she wins an Oscar and gets many more roles in the future so we can keep talking about her.

  19. lenje says:

This lady will never look bad *sigh*

I like the comparison with Hepburn, although I don’t think Hepburn is petite (according to Google, she’s 5’7″, which is considered tall for women at her time).

I like Julie Delpy’s gown! Before Midnight is one of the best movies I’ve seen in 2013, and although Delpy probably won’t stand a chance in the leading actress category (pretty crowded this year), I am hoping she and Ethan get the screenwriting nom — and eventually win it.

  20. Han says:

Lawrence is lining up to be a contender for american hustle. Most early reviews seem to indicate that she is the best thing in american hustle. But i doubt she will win an oscar for the 2nd year in a row. But it looks like she might get nominated again. I think Lupita has a good chance but i really hope this is Chiwetels year. That man has such a great body of work he deserves it.

  21. Roxanna says:

Audrey Hepburn and Lupita Nyongo petite? Last time I checked petite means a dainty, small/short girl, Audrey Hepburn was 5’7 and Lupita Nyongo is 5’5. Not short in my opinion.

  22. lucy2 says:

Gorgeous! I’ve yet to see her film, but I saw her on Craig Ferguson’s show and she was so lovely, I’m rooting for her.
I want to see American Hustle too, everyone looks good in that.
I love Rashida (and Amy!) but rarely like her fashion choices.

  23. judyjudy says:

    Skin envy.

    Her skin is absolutely flawless.

  24. Jess says:

She is beautiful and I love the dress, shoes, and coat!

  25. toto says:

Too many comments about JL performance here in same style despite no one saw the movie. Ahm
I hope JL fans accept that there are much better actress than her.

Imo she did not deserve the first one either.

@celine among all charecuters in the movie, most people left theater asking what happened to petsy ..we wanted to know more about her.
She captured our souls with her acting.

    • Barbara says:

i have seen the movie… there have been screenings. Quite a few critics ( NYC CRITICS, as her WIN today shows), reviewers, SAG members, have seen the movie fore sure.

      • toto says:

Listen I am not arguing winning orlosing, I am arguing that people say so much and lupita perfomance was excellent and memorable. I don, t like just because we are living the lawrance hype we shall consider others work zero.

If you believe she deserved oscar for sln , you are entitled 4 it.

Her acting was good but not an oscar worthy imo.
I wish her will as lupita.we shall see AH annd judge by ourselves

    • Han says:

@Toto people are basing this on what critics say. Critics are already buzzing about Lawrence performance. And she won the best supporting actress at the new york critics circle today so its not just hype to think that she might be one of the frontrunners. I really like Lupita and want her and in fact all the major players from 12 years to be nominated. Its not a Lupita vs Lawrence situation. I can appreciate both of them. I don’t really know who should win as I haven’t seen all the performances.

      • Dandhara Esperanza says:

Both movies are different. But I beg to differ when people say that Lupita didn’t get enough screen time. In fact, I am still trying to find out how we can learn more about that plantation to know what became of Patsy. That character and Lupita’s sad face gets stained in your memory.

BTW I love JL, but I didn’t think she deserved the 1st Oscar. Bradley was way better than her. And yes JL is a good actress. Winter’s Bone, now that is a different story.

  26. themummy says:

Don’t like the shoes. They blend into the carpet too much. But good freaking LORD, this woman is breathtakingly stunning. And talented, too.

  27. Janeite says:

Lupita looks amazing. Love the dress, the coat, and the shoes. Her skin is flawless and I like her hair too.

    Jared Leto looks like Jesus.

  28. Lisa says:

    Better than milquetoast Audrey.

  29. moon says:

Oh gosh I LOVE her outfit. I thought the dress was amazing on its own (simple, but with the cute detail that didn’t seem twee) and the orange shoes were a fun touch, but the dress just nailed the entire ensemble. Who’s her stylist?

  30. Bianca says:

Everyone else pales in comparison, really. She’s on another level of beauty.

  31. Lucy says:

I love eye-catching-colored shoes, but those bother me for some reason. Everything else is perfect, though!

  32. IceQueen says:

    Lupita is really stunning!

  33. TheOriginalWaffle says:

Good God, she is too beautiful to be believed. I loved her in 12YAS but would (as others said) see her with more screen time to get a real feel for her as an actress.

  34. Moi says:

Ummm wow she is so freaking lovely. Have never heard of her before, going to look her up tomorrow. Just….lovely, is the word for her.

  35. Maria says:

    She’s simply and purely LOVELY.
    And that’s a refreshing sight.
