Jared Leto: ‘I never thought… I’d be mentioned with either buzz or Oscar’

Jared Leto

Jared Leto covers the January issue of Nylon Guys to promote his role as an HIV-positive transsexual in Dallas Buyers Club. I’ve never revealed this here, but Jared is a longtime crush of mine. Not only did he play the enigmatic Jordan Catalano in My So-Called Life, but he also embodied legendary runner Steve Prefontaine! A lot of people think Billy Crudup did a better job as Pre, but I disagree. It’s all about the Leto for me. Not even Jared’s current limp, slightly greasy ombre hair can distract me from his amazingness.

Jared has been all the buzz lately as the leading contender for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and not just because he looks great in drag. Even Variety, which describes the category as “a hot mess,” admits that Jared is a “sure bet” for a nomination. Variety says not only is the nomination a deserved one, but it’s “one way to keep the Oscars young, even if many Academy voters have never heard of Jordan Catalano.” Touché.

Jared lost a ton of weight to play his character, Rayon, and he previously told Vulture, “My biggest concern was to portray a living, breathing human being and not to put a cliché or stereotype or caricature up onscreen.” Did I mention how Jared shamelessly hit on the Vulture journo during that interview? Well he did, and I am so jealous. Let’s do some excerpts from Nylon Guys.

He’s kinda shy: “I’m actually a very private person. If you read between the lines, you’re only going to find more lines. I’m not a reality star. I went to art school. I thought I would be an artist. That’s all I really wanted to share with people. I still feel the same way.”

Testing out his drag costume: “There was a time when I walked through the Whole Foods, and I remember getting three distinct looks: The first was ”Who is that?” The second was ‘What is that?’ And the third was ‘I don’t know what the f–k that is and I don’t like that. That’s disgusting.’ And it was great to get all of those things. Especially the third one-to feel the condemnation and the judgment. That was important.”

On awards buzz: “I never thought in a million years I would be mentioned with either ‘buzz’ or ‘Oscar.’ It’s completely mind-blowing. You don’t do it for that, but buzz is an indication that something worked. Like, maybe this one won’t be a heartbreak.”

[From Nylon Guys]

For some reason, Jared’s “method” way of walking into the grocery store dressed in his Rayon drag doesn’t rub me the wrong way. Method acting gets a really bad rap these days thanks to the likes of Shia LaBeouf, who manages to annoy even Brad Pitt. Jared was fully in disguise, and I doubt anyone even recognized him.

Just for kicks, here’s Jared’s appearance on The Ellen Show in October. Even then he was perplexed over awards talk, and he claims a lot of his body hair never grew back after shaving it for this role. Rowrr.

I love him. He’s really lovely and always comes across as kind. Why does he get this reputation of only banging young women? I never got that…Is it because he dated Scarlett when she was really young and “maybe” banged Lilo?

    • V4Real says:

Didn’t he also bang Cameron Diaz for years?

      • Lark says:

They wer engaged at one point, but he and Cammie D are pretty close in age. I feel like he banged one or two young women, and then he kind of got painted with the “he’s a Clooney/DiCaprio type of brush.”

      • V4Real says:

I don’t know a great deal about Leto but I find him incredibly sexy in a weird way. I haven’t seen DBC but I will be going to the cinema to see it before it’s run is over.

I never knew he was labeled as a Clooney/DiCaprio but I still like him.

    • Lori says:

HE seems lovely and soft spoken in interviews……but still I read that he’s a douche bag. I don’t get it either.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

He’s best friends with Uncle Terrry, like really close. I like him but that makes me side-eye him definitely.

    • JALorden says:

He’s one person I actually follow. He got that reputation because.. Well, he’s photographed with twenty-something girls all the time. He sucked face with Paris Hilton too, remember those pictures? There was a TMZ video recently of him exiting a car with three or four young women behind him, all going into a restaurant.

      He’s earned that rep.

    • Pippa says:

Ugh he banged Lilo and Paris Hilton. Nothing lovely about that, he is also best friends with Uncle Terry i feel like he is just a typical Hollywood douchebag. He is pretensious though, like James Franco he IS art, but even James wouldnt bang Lilo and Paris.

I’ve always thought Jared Leto was a good actor. I loved him in Requiem for a Dream. (In fact, everyone was good in that movie). But I’m quite sure, by flashing that “666” sign and thus being “down” with all it represents, he knew these things would come about. Gotta push that agenda!

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

      What up with that?!!!!!!!!!!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

He was FANTASTIC as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club.

I like Leto a lot, douche status notwithstanding. I think he’s had a really interesting acting career so far-he’s been amazingly picky about the movies he chooses but always gives 100% to every role.

      Also, he’s hot as hell.

    • Asiyah says:

Requiem for a Dream was simply amazing!

    • floridaseaturtle says:

Thank you. I was wondering if someone was going to bring that up.

  3. Aims says:

God I’d hit that hard. I love the vibe he gives out and would go there without any shame.

  4. eliza says:

Sorry, but he is a tool. Tries waaaay too hard.

  5. flavia_deluce says:

Limp and greasy hair? I think it looks amazing. When he was on JStew last week I had to replay the interview because I was lost in his beautiful locks. He’s sooooooooo pretty.

  6. Scout says:

A friend of mine grew up with him and says he’s a complete douche. She kind of ruined my love for Jordan Catelano. I think the whole rocker thing is pretty douchey, but he is super talented. Get rid of the hair and that awful clothes and he’s hot too.

  7. K says:

I just can’t with him looking like a Russell Brand version of my Grammy’s Jesus portrait.

  8. Dani says:

He never ages. Jesus. I always found him so sexy. He has a really good singing voice too.

  9. Cel says:

Just saw Dallas Buyers Club two nights ago and he was amazing. Just phenomenal. Loved him. I was repeatedly shocked at how Matthew Mcooggno-howeveryouspellit looked absolutely haggard by the different angles you’d see throughout the movie. To a certain extent I was with JL also but his performance stood out to me more than even that.

  10. Nicolette says:

He just seems so nice, and sure is easy on the eyes. 🙂

  11. Mandy says:

HOT. And I think I like him better with long hair.

  12. MonicaQ says:

Love him when he acts, love him when he performs. Seen 30 Seconds to Mars at least 5 times in concert and he’s never put on a bad show which I can’t say for some other acts I’ve seen (Gwar being drunk, Shinedown’s equipment going out, and so on). He stops outside his tour bus and signs autographs, is really nice to the fans there, and when he stopped at USF, he just went into the regular cafeteria on campus and chowed down with Shannon. They barely got bugged because they’re so young looking and he joked that he still gets carded when he buys beer sometimes.

Though that last album was yeeesh. Yeesh. No.

  13. MonicaQ says:

    Whoops, double post.

  14. Dommy Dearest says:

I REALLY like Leto. He’s attractive in my type of way. Love the scruffy and tattooed guys. Just like CM Punk (fucking yummmm!)

I hope he wins. Dallas Buyers Club looks to be a really good film. Love his song ‘Beautiful Lie’

  15. JH says:

His rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay” gave me some buzz. Hot damn.

  16. Han says:

His terry richardson bestie, paris hilton dating ways, don’t appeal to me neither does his mediocre music.
But i hear his performance is great, so good for him.

  17. Anne says:

God, I remember how hard I crushed on him during that god awful movie Alexander. I’m glad he’s back to acting now. I always thought he was a better actor than singer.

  18. pirategirl says:

My panties just go poof by just looking at him. I was sad that his concert sold out in my city a few days after going on sale. Really wanted to watch him toss that beautiful hair around.

  19. Abby says:

Requiem for a Dream was a powerful movie movie and he was fantastic in it. I’ve been a fan since. He’s beautiful.

  20. RMJ says:

I’m sure he’s great in the movie, but I really REALLY wish they would hire transgender women to play transgender women, as with Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black. It’s really insulting to trans women to be played by a man in drag, or, as with Felicity Huffman, by a cisgender woman with makeup to look more “masculine”. That kind of approach suggests that trans women are not real women, which they are, or that they all look a certain way that can be approximated with makeup, when they don’t. There are plenty of talented transgender actresses who could more accurately and realistically portray the discrimination they receive, and I’m sure they could use the work. Hire trans women to play trans women!

    • Anna-fo-Fanna says:

Was just coming here to write the same thing!! Plus, I don’t at all like his whole statement saying, “And it was great to get all of those things. Especially the third one-to feel the condemnation and the judgment. That was important.” Important?!? Great?!? How about you think about the fact that some people have to deal with it in their everyday lives; it’s not a costume they can just take off when the want to go back to their real lives. I understand what he was trying to say, but he needed to acknowledge that this is a predjudice (sp?) that people have to deal with for real, and that it ruins lives. Shitty people, I mean, not being trans or gay or bi. Anyway, I thought that because of that he sounded a little off.

  21. Chloe says:

I saw Dallas Buyers Club a couple of week’s ago and I thought Jared and Michael were both excellent in this movies, award winning acting and the movie was very inspiring. Years ago when I was just a weee teenager I did my final senior paper on the AIDs crisis and a lot of the issues in the movie reminded me of my research I did for the paper.

  22. Moi says:

When asked if Kimmel ever had to hide his disdain for a guest, he chose the actor/rocker. “He was so insufferably satisfied with himself that I wanted to strangle him,” said Kimmel.

Jimmy Kimmel was talking about Jared Leto. However people can grow and become better people over time. Hopefully that’s the case with JL.
