2014 Oscar nominations: who made the shortlist & who got snubbed?

wenn20983644

The 2014 Oscar nominations just came out, and there are many major surprises and WTFs, just like there are every year. I’m disappointed that Idris Elba didn’t make the shortlist for Best Actor for Mandela, but I was sort of expecting it too. My biggest surprise? NO LOVE FOR EMMA THOMPSON. I realize that Saving Mr. Banks wasn’t the best film of the year or anything, but to not recognize Emma’s outstanding work is absurd. ABSURD. I’m also still surprised to see the Academy still ride-or-dying for Alexander Payne and his latest film, Nebraska, as that film garnered many nominations. I’m most pleased with all of the nominations for 12 Years a Slave: I worried that someone major would be snubbed (like Chiwetel) and I would be so disappointed, but everyone’s there. So, here are the nominations in the major categories:

Best Supporting Actress:
Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave”
Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine”
Jennifer Lawrence for “American Hustle”
June Squibb for “Nebraska”
Julia Roberts for “August: Osage County”

Best Supporting Actor:
Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”
Bradley Cooper, “American Hustle”
Michael Fassbender, “12 Years a Slave”
Jonah Hill, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Jared Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club”

Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “American Hustle”
Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”
Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”

Lead Actress:
Amy Adams, “American Hustle”
Cate Blanchett, “Blue Jasmine”
Sandra Bullock, “Gravity”
Meryl Streep, “August: Osage County”
Judi Dench, “Philomenia”

Best Director:
David O. Russell, “American Hustle”
Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity”
Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”
Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”
Martin Scorsese, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Best Picture:
“American Hustle,” ”Captain Phillips,” ”Dallas Buyers Club,” ”Gravity,” ”Her,” ”Nebraska,” ”Philomena,” ”12 Years a Slave,” ”The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Yes, the Academy loves David O. Russell. The Academy loves Christian Bale no matter what (although to be fair, Bale’s Hustle performance was perhaps the most I’ve ever liked him in a role). The Academy loves Amy Adams, which is nice. The Academy loves Judi Dench, like, A LOT. And apparently the Academy is tired of Tom Hanks. Which is kind of funny because Tom is like Meryl – he gets nominated for just showing up, but not this year. Also: no Robert Redford, which… I understand. His film got buzz, but I don’t think Redford really gives a crap. Oh, and NO JOAQUIN PHOENIX. Which is probably fine with him since he thinks awards are crap anyway. AND NO OPRAH. Oh, Oprah is going to be depressed about that. That’s kind of rough for her because she wanted it.

Also: the Academy loves Jonah Hill, which still cracks me up. Jonah Hill is our next great actor, amirite. And while I didn’t include Best Foreign Film nominees, a lot of people are talking about the exclusion of Blue Is the Warmest Color. Damn, why does the Academy hate French lesbians?!

    Jared’s Gal….IM SO SHOCKED!

  2. Maria says:

I like Jennifer but after seeing AH, no Oscar for that role, especially when you have Lupita’s performance to compare with.

    • Dani2 says:

I completely agree. I’m really stoked about Lupita’s though! 🙂 Although I have a feeling that Jen will win this one, my belief isn’t based on anything concrete but I just can’t shake this feeling.

      • Latisse says:

I really hope Lupita wins. I thought Jennifer was very good in AH and think she is def deserving of the nom but I really hope Lupita takes it.

As a generically attractive white girl, with a lot of talent and a hoarde of adoring fans, Jennifer will have many shots at the Oscar. Hell, she’s up to 3 Oscar noms, 1 Oscar win at the age of 23.

Whereas as, and maybe this is just me being cynical, I don’t know that Lupita, a black actress, will likely ever again get the chance to play a complex character that demands Oscar recognition. So I hope she takes this one. Her depiction of Patsy was stellar.

      • Apples says:

I haven’t seen American Hustle yet so, I was just assuming that the J. Law nominations were over-rated hype, etc.
Then I found out that her performance was also nominated for a SAG… Her actor peers all loved it, too.
        Now I’m confused.

      • Latisse says:

@Apples, I don’t think it is possible for anyone to live up to the amount of hype JLAW is currently getting but she was really good, honestly. For me, she was the best part of the movie.

      • cr says:

@Apples: Oscar acting nominations are also peer:

“Members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominated film editors, etc. However within the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees.”

        http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/about/voting.html

So while there is the inevitable backlash in the public, right now her peers like her acting. Doesn’t mean she’ll win.

      • sapphoandgrits says:

        I think Lupita will win.

      • alina says:

Agree, jen will win this too and sadly just like her first oscar it’s not based on her skill but popularity. i have a feeling there will be some backlash toward her

      • jaye says:

I don’t think JLaw will win, but I do think it’s a good possibility that Julia Roberts will.

    • m says:

Jen was the best part of AH. Even Bale and Adams fell flat so if they managed a nod, Jen earned hers.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

I agree. In a movie where ALL the actors did a great job she was still the best one IMO. I still hope Lupita wins but Jennifer absolutely deserved her nomination.

      • michelle says:

oh please, you don’t like her performance, you like her. she never actually disappears into a role, like, ever! she didn’t deserve to win last year, she didn’t even deserve the nomination, it was so laughable. it was like watching natalie portman win for black swan- “should i laugh or cry!?”. if she does somehow win over lupita nyong’o or sally hawkins this year, her career is OVER. the backlash will be insane. i almost wish she’ll win this year so people will realize what a joke her career is, compared to those with actual talent. you know, people who take their careers seriously and don’t call what they do “STUPID”.

      • Jay says:

michelle, who p-ssed in your coffee this morning? Jlaw’s career is a joke? Seems like she’s doing pretty well to me. Who are you to tell people they didn’t like her performance in AH? I thought she was great… not because I like her, but because I simply thought she gave a great performance. Stop trying to impose your opinions on other people. It’s sad, really.

      • flan says:

        Wow, Michelle, what a rant.

You’d think you talked about world hunger or homeless dying in the street or any other important issue with the amount of passion you display.

      • paranormalgirl says:

I thought her performance was quite good, too, and that her nomination was well deserved. I loved her in AH. I hope Lupita wins, though, because I found her performance to be a nuanced one in a hard to watch film.

      • phlyfiremama says:

JLaw RULED American Hustle. She was so funny, so spot on…”you’re welcome”. My Husband, who could care less about awards or give a darn about who the actors are said as the credits are rolling that she should win a best supporting actress Oscar. She was the best thing about that movie, which was chock FULL of amazing performances~

    • ctkat1 says:

I’ve seen both performances, and they were both very strong. They’re also both really, really different. Lupita’s is a quiet, emotionally devastating performance, whereas Jennifer’s is a crazy, comic performance. It’s hard to compare them, honestly. They both completely deserve the nominations, because they were both very strong elements of their very strong films.

I’d like for Lupita to win, because I think it’s an amazing victory when a non-white actress is rewarded at the Oscars. However, it’s her very first role. The nomination IS the prize.

I think if Jennifer wins, the backlash will be severe and probably detrimental. It’s the rare case of an actress benefiting from NOT winning an Oscar.

      • Dani2 says:

Lupita and Jen are my two favourite actresses of the moment and I definitely agree that they were very different so that makes it hard to really compare them, and yes, I’m torn between being happy for Jen if she wins and being afraid for her because tumblr freaked at her GG win. I want the general public to continue to like her lol. Likeability is so important in what she does – she’s one of those rare people that has her peers + critics + the general public on her side. I can’t think of many other young actresses that have that going for them.

      • NicolaGossips says:

@ctkati I hear you, but with actresses of colour, Hollywood has no clue what to do with them. They disappear after a nomination or a win. Hollywood execs only now think white women can carry a film (and only if that woman is Jennifer Lawrence). God help black, latino, asian . . .

Also, Lupita isn’t African-American, she’s Kenyan, she’ll get a few supporting roles as lawyers or doctors, but then what? Think of Angela Bassett after her nom for What’s Love Got to do With It.

With some actors, regardless or race, you know they’re never getting another shot at a Oscar worthy role.

      • Zwella Ingrid says:

I hope there is no backlash, because I absolutely love Jlaw! I think she is amazing.

    • Lopusta says:

      +1000000 Maria

      • Tig says:

I’m afraid I have to disagree re Jennifer’s performance in AH- all she did was screech, and her hairdo was 80% of the character. That being said, like her in other roles, but hope she doesn’t get an Oscar for this.

  3. MsT_Shady says:

Jonah Hill??!! I mean….what??! When did he cross over from fart and d*ck jokes?!
This is so random. I can’t.

    • Latisse says:

He’s good though! And I hate saying that because I heard he is a giant douche but he was really, really good in WOWS.

    • Anna says:

That was basically my reaction. Especially at the expense of Daniel Bruhl of Rush. Speaking of Rush, I cannot believe the 100% shut-out, even across technical categories (editing, sound, visuals, cinematography) – I mean, effing Lone Ranger got TWO!!!

      • Ray says:

Ugh Daniel Bruhl over Jonah Hill any day. Kinda sad about Joaquin, I loved him in Her (that sounds kinda weird haha)

      • Kaiser says:

Yes, I forgot to mention Daniel Bruhl’s snub, that sucks.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

right, you`ve got to be kidding me!!!
        f*ck the Academy.

      • MsT_Shady says:

Right?! I mean, sure, Leo put in an adequate -good performance in a comedy about…well, t*ts, drugs, money, greed and fast cars. Leo is generally a good actor, as much as I think he’s been stuck in a rut for about 9 years.

What did Jonah Hill DO though?! Was he nominated because he wore a fat suit and some fake teeth??! I simply don’t get it- he was forgettable in every way.

      • littlestar says:

The Lone Ranger got TWO nominations?!

        W. T. F.

More proof the Oscars are nothing but a joke.

      • Mairead says:

I’ll need a while to calm down over that omission!

    • Myrto says:

I KNOW. Jonah Hill??? Like WTF? Ugh. I hope The Wolf of Wall Street wins nothing. It was terrible and I’m pissed off I wasted 3 hours of my life on this movie.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

He was amazing in WOWS. Not as good as Leo but almost (and Leo is my favorite actor!)

    • INeedANap says:

I am not sold on Jonah Hill as an actor — I think he only works well when surrounded by good actors, which necessarily isn’t a bad thing, but I am not sure he’s a great actor on his own merits.

HOWEVER. No personal feelings toward him because it’s not his fault, but I am kind of angry at how successful he’s been as an actor. He does not have a female equivalent; that is, a stereotypically unattractive actor (I personally think his eyes are gorgeous) getting a ton of excellent acting opportunities. Not that he doesn’t deserve to be an actor, but a female Jonah Hill would never get that much and that kind of play.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Rebel Wilson was my immediate thought when you said “Female Jonal Hill” 😀

      • Lori says:

        Melissa McCarthy?

      • Kimmy says:

Interesting theory. Rebel Wilson definitely comes to mind. Too bad she’s being wasted on a silly tv show. She’s at least likeable. Jonah Hill is seems like such a d-bag. It kills me that he now has TWO oscar noms. Ugh. He was very good in WOWS though. SMH.

    • Lilacflowers says:

MsT_Shady, he didn’t cross over from that vulgar stuff; his role in Wolf is nothing but fart jokes, drug jokes, and sex jokes, complete with a fake penis.

  4. Maya says:

Well done 12 years a slave. They definitely deserves the nominations and hopefully Academy will wake up and give them the awards as well. If there is any justice they will win Best Movie, Director, Actor, Sup Actor & Sup actress.

I love Leo but this year should belong to Chiwetel and hopefully Fassbender will beat Leto and Lupita will beat Jennifer Law. Steve M should win the director but I think they will give it to Gravity director just because he created a new way of filming.

As for Best Actress hopefully Cate Blachett will win.

PS: Really surprised that Sean Bobbit didnt get nominated for 12 years a slave. Critics and audience were raving about the way this movie was shoot.

    • I will be p-ssed (at the Academy) if JLaw wins over anyone, let alone Lupita. She was good in her role, I think, but Oscar worthy? Golden Globe worthy? Especially compared to the other performances—NO.

      • TC says:

Virgilia – I don’t think JLaw will win the Oscar. Her Golden Globe win was expected, but the Oscars are different. I think Lupita is the front runner in this case.

  5. Ellen says:

Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, and Oprah Winfrey: wouldn’t it be great if they did a Funny or Die video about their alternate plans for the night now?

I would have subbed out Emma for Meryl. I am not a big fan of scenery-chewing. But whatever. It looks like a decent year for the Oscar pool.

    • Anna says:

Drinks at O’Donnell’s, on Oprah, of course. Snarky Oscars telecast commentary supplied by Emma (to complement Oprah’s side-eye). And Hanks hugging everyone, trying to lift the spirits and be a good sport.

    • Andrew1 says:

Im so happy oprah didn’t get a nom. She was good in the butler, but overrated (that while movie was overrated in my opinion). Anyway, I’m disappointed in Hamks not getting a nom in captain Philips, but I don’t know who I would switch out…they are all great best actor noms!

    • Lilacflowers says:

I definitely would have subbed Emma for Meryl and Hanks (after Redford, Michael B. Jordan, and Idris Elba) for DiCaprio. But Oprah? No. She was a giant hole in the middle of that film and Forrest Whittaker was stuck lugging her around. The whole time I was watching it, I was imaging what Viola Davis or Octavia Spencer could have done with that part. It would have been a very different, much better film

  6. kay says:

I hope Leo wins for best actor

  7. GiGi says:

I’m such a Steve McQueen fangirl, I just want his work to win everything forever. But, *I guess* there were some other good movies out this year…

    • Anna says:

Sadly I dont think he stands a chance against Cuaron, but maybe Best Pic win will be a consolation?

      • paranormalgirl says:

The thing is that Cuaron went places few directors go and he was amazing. That’s not to take anything against Steve McQueen, because he took a screenplay that I thought could have been better, and turned it into this almost masterpiece of a film. But the Academy likes to reward directors who step out on the ledge, and that’s what Cuaron did.

  8. PunkyMomma says:

No nomination for Emma? That’s just wrong. I really thought Redford might get a sentimental nomination. I saw Gravity, the technology was astounding, but I can think of a number of actresses who could have played that part. Besides, Sigourney Weaver did it better.

    • Dani2 says:

I’m very shocked about Emma’s as well, did not see that coming.

    • Myrto says:

I’m flabbergasted Emma didn’t get a nomination. I really thought she had it in the bag. this is baffling. Did she upset Academy member or something? I don’t get it.
It’s a shame Fruitvale Station didn’t get any nomination, I just saw it yesterday and it was really good. *sigh* The Oscars rarely get it right.

    • Grant says:

I thought Sandra was pretty spectacular. Definitely the best performance of her career and it was incredibly physically demanding. I was impressed and I think she definitely deserves the nom.

    • Mairead says:

Crikey, I had just assumed she was there. But I was a little disappointed for Colin too. He was heart-breaking. Maybe because it’s only people who have actually seen the film *ahem* realise he’s in it?

  9. Christo says:

Cate Blanchett is my favorite for her performance in Blue Jasmine. That movie has stayed in my mind ever since I saw it. While it is certainly not an uplifting movie, she taps right into the emotional core and craziness of losing everything, including one’s sanity.

I’m also very happy with Sally Hawkins nomination for best supporting actress in the same movie. She is excellent, and I dare anyone to discern that she is from the UK. She had the accent and role down completely. I was completely floored when I learned that she wasn’t from the U.S.

    • Anna says:

Jaw <– dropped. Never would have guessed SH is not a US East-coaster.

      • Ally8 says:

OMG, order up “Happy-Go-Lucky”. Just a magic, wonderful, realistic yet hopeful movie about in which she plays a believable, interesting woman in London.

    • sputnik says:

i know people are really wanting lupita to win – and i understand why, she’s great – but sally hawkins’ performance in blue jasmine was probably my favourite of the year.

    • Mingy says:

Everything you said, Christo. That movie stayed with me long after watching..both those ladies were amazing, but Cate’s performance blew me away.

  10. LadyMTL says:

The only nom that really surprises me is Jonah Hill because really? Jonah Hill? I guess being buddies with Leo pays off.

As for the rest, I sort of expected it. If the Globes are anything to go by we might see Dallas Buyers Club win a lot more than expected, which would be cool. I mean, I don’t think it’ll win best Picture though – I’d give it to Gravity just for being so damned original AND good, or 12 Years a Slave for being all around fantastic.

    • Andrew1 says:

I would normally agree bit he really was terrific in WOlf. I mean I was shocked and I have to remind myself how good of an actor he is, despite his doucheness

  11. Simmie says:

Ugh, even the nominees are boring this year. I just hope 12 Years a Slave and Gravity get everything and American Hustle gets shut out.

As for Blue is the Warmest Color I thought it was ineligible?

    • JK says:

Yep, it’s ineligible. They didn’t release it with the right timing to qualify.

The foreign film category is bizarre this year–Wadjda, The Past, and The Grandmaster all got passed over.

      • Simmie says:

I’m especially surprised about The Grandmaster because it got nominated in other categories.

      • sputnik says:

i was HUGELY disappointed by the grandmaster, despite my deep and abiding love for tony leung {and WKW} i’m not really surprised it was overlooked.

the hunt and the great beauty were both brilliant though. haven’t seen the others.

      • Jelly says:

Films have to be released by the end of September and Blue is the Warmest color was released Oct 8. It was the filmmaker’s choice, so… maybe they think they have a better shot next year? The Hunt did the same thing, and is in competition this year even though it won Cannes in 2012. Rules for consideration in the category are weird.
        http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2013/20131007a.html

I am surprised that Grandmaster didn’t make the final list though. It was shortlisted (The Past, Wadja were not.) I am convinced it failed to make the final list because Megan Ellison bungled the campaign. I do not like that chick. I wonder if she will care that she couldn’t get a Wong Kar Wai film nominated [he has never had a nom in the Best Foreign picture category]? This is a shame and a missed opportunity, but since American Hustle got all those gifts, I doubt she will be thinking about The Grandmaster.

Still, I think Vinterberg is a lock. The Hunt is accessible, has drama and intrigue with an internationally acclaimed actor (Mads!)

      • lenje says:

I’m surprised that the Grandmaster is snubbed l! I was hoping Wajda make the cut, but a Cambodian movie made it instead, so yeah… I can live with that. (I’m from a Southeast Asian country, so if any ASEAN member is recognized here, I tend to support it, LOL)

      • LAK says:

Foreign film category has to be sanctioned by country of origin. The rules are wishy washy, but that’s how it’s played out in reality. THE GRANDMASTER has American money which disqualifies it from being submitted as the official Chinese entry.

Being an American film, it would have qualified for other categories or rather, it could have been pushed and campaigned in other categories, but Harvey took his scissors to it such that the version that was released in the cinemas wasn’t as good as the version premiered in Berlin.

And Harvey AND Megan had bigger fish to fry with AUGUST and AMERICAN HUSTLE respectively.

    • sputnik says:

it was definitely ineligible. i’m sure they announced after cannes that it wouldn’t be eligible due to the late release in france.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

there was hope that blue could pull an Amour and get the leads nominated seperately, which they definitly would have deserved, but the Lead Actress category was pretty crowded this year.

  12. truthful says:

Dallas Buyer’s Club made me fall in love w/Matthew all over again, that movie was fabulous and I was a big sobby mess. LOVED Leto’s character and even Jen Garner’s role, it just all worked for me.

Jonah Hill repulses me for some reason, I just pretend he does not exist.

    • AG-UK says:

I agree, I saw DBC in NY over Thanksgiving as it’s not even out in the UK yet. I too loved that film, I thought about it and some scenes I can still see vividly in my head. I thought both were incredible. It’s a crap shoot for the Oscars I think, partly popularity in my opinion and partly actual people really thinking about the films they vote for. I I hope Lupita wins as she was very good but I too can’t shake that feeling. I would like Chiwetel to win but love Matthew as well like comparing oranges to apples. I def want Leto to win as chances are his film days are numbered as he says and Fassbender will def be making more. I will read about on the 3rd March weirdly half the films that win or the people I can’t remember 2 years later.

      • truthful says:

Just thinking about the movie gives me a watery eye and knowing all that they put into their characters appearance wise, to bring it…the movie just moved me.

I too saw the movie in NYC on a weekend getaway, it was not playing in Chgo.
I will never forget this flick, to know what folks had to fight against in order to manage their own illiness.

      • AG-UK says:

Also for me I knew people in the beginning . I remember it well the gay cancer, and you would see people and not see them for a while and when you did your jaw would drop or you ask about someone oh they died. I won’t forget it either and when it starts here next month I will drag my husband to see it, it had funny parts but just very well done. I know many don’t like Leto and perhaps Matthew isn’t part of the cool kids in Hollywood but they were amazing in it.

    • Leah says:

Couldn’t disagree more. I thought it was nothing special. Matthew does a good job but he he didn’t blow me away.

    • Tig says:

Couldn’t agree with you more about DBC- as it worked out, saw it and Philomena about 2 days apart- I was an emotional wreck!! They were both so moving- for different reasons.

  13. Lucy says:

I thought this was supposed to tbe the year that there was a tleast three men of colour up for best actor? Sigh. It would have been amazing.

  14. pretty says:

I really wish Jen Law DOESN’T get the oscar because people are gonna hate her if she gets it. I mean it’s not her freaking fault that she got golden globes. I don’t understand why people are hating on her for that. jesus. imagine the freaking outrage if she get the oscar too.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

hate is too strong of a word, but both years there are/were superior perfomances to hers, so she didn´t deserve both wins IMO, but whatever.

      • MaiGirl says:

I agree. I don’t hate her. In fact, I loved her in Hunger Games and Winter’s Bone and think she seems like a really cool person. But she is overrated, and at a point in her fame where everyone thinks she can do no wrong. She was too young for the AH role, as she was for SLP, and she played her character in a very shallow way. She was out-acted in every way by everyone else in the film. It isn’t that people hate her, it’s just that some of us are sick of having hamburger that is supposed to be steak.

      • MsT_Shady says:

        @Maigirl

You nailed it! JL is hamburger and I prefer steak! She’s ok, she doesn’t offend me as an actor but the minute one dares to question her acting chops, it’s like BLASPHEMY!!!!

Winter’s Bone was the shit though. She was very good in that one. I can’t remember who she lost out on the Oscar to….

      • MaiGirl says:

I love you so hard right now, MsT_Shady. We have a mind meld, you and I. Let’s have a hot platonic internet affair! 😀

And yes, Winter’s Bone was AMAZING! Besides being her best role to date, everyone in that movie was so talented that it made me believe that I was watching a documentary, not a fictional film.

    • littlestar says:

I think the thing that irks people is that there were far better performances than JL’s, when she won her Oscar last year. I saw Silver Lining’s after she had won, and while I am generally okay with her, I don’t really understand how she won an Oscar for that roll. It wasn’t memorable in the least and nothing ground breaking about it. I also thought her and Bradley Cooper had 0 chemistry, making both performances subpar for me.

  15. LucyS says:

I’m kind of bummed Redford didn’t nominated (I didn’t see the film yet, but I’ve seen almost every other Redford film ever made, even the crap ones). He’s 77 years old and everyone’s been saying All Is Lost was his best performance in years. I read an article yesterday in The Hollywood Reporter where he basically said the film made him rediscover how much he loved to act and he wants to act MORE not less now.

Also – Jonah Hill can SIT DOWN. He’s a humorless douche and his now being a two time nominee is just going to make him even more insufferable.

    • Mamy says:

Agree. This was the only snub that really stung for me. All the others (Emma, Idris, Daniel Bruhl, Hanks, etc.) will be okay. They’ll have more chances, but Redford may not.

Of course, Redford’s probably unperturbed by it all because he’s cool like that, which is why I love him. He’s a quiet rebel, something the world need more of, IMO.

I hope he does act more now. I’d like to see him stretch himself and go out on a creative high.

      • curlsunited says:

It’s outrageous. He deserved better. It sadly reminds me of Peter O’Toole. Eight times nominated, and all he got was an honorary Oscar.

    • Jennifer Romans says:

Yes, plus a thousand ! its awful to live in a world where the likes of Jonah Hill has 2 Oscar noms and Gary Oldman has only 1 !

      • Lou says:

THIS> Oh my god. Gary Oldman has more talent in his pinky than Jonah Hill has in his entire smug butterball body.

        ARGH.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Redford’s performance was amazing. It is practically wordless and he conveys everything with his facial expressions.

  16. Kiddo says:

I like the Golden Globes better. The Academy Awards are so buttoned up and starched, it’s a masochistic exercise for me to watch. I haven’t seen all of the films, who do you think will win, as opposed to who you think should win?

  17. Juliette says:

    Chiwetel Ejiofor for the win.

As likable as Jennifer Lawrence is, shes 23, she just won last year. I’m really not rooting for her, especially when she’s in a category with Lupita Nyong’o. Although, I haven’t seen American Hustle yet, so maybe I’ll change my mind.

  18. blue marie says:

Ha, I had the same reaction when saw Jonah’s name. I thought “crap, we get to see more interviews of that d-bag”

  19. Here or there says:

Darn. No love for Rush. I thought that was an great film.

  20. Dedre says:

Sorry, but no Idris Elba? That just does not make sense to me, he was AMAZING as Mandela!! Not saying he should have won over Chiwetel, but give the man a nomination!! And then no Blackfish for Documentary? I don’t think I’ll be tuning in this year, too depressing!

ps – Will Jennifer Lawerence be the female Christopher Waltz if she wins? Not always nominated, but when she is, she wins…

  21. toto says:

I feel very bad for Emma , i knew it Meyrl speech of Walt Disney will harm saving Mr.. banks movie chances well played well played.
if this is not well cooked between Harvey and whom ever manages AH then I am crazy.
The way American granting All these nominations is really weird. This move is barely good but anyway its popularity contest not merit.

sorry people for the rant but i am angry now grrrrrrrrr

    • frisbeejada says:

American Hustle produced by Annapurna Pictures and Atlas Entertainment run by Megan Ellison and Dawn Steel respectively; August Osage Country produced by Smokehouse Pictures and distributed by the Weinstein Company run by George Clooney and Harvey and Bob Weinstein respectively – two completely different companies in competition with each other yet you still suggest they are worked together to block Saving Mr Banks – still seems highly unlikely to me…particularly when so many other films/performances were overlooked like Mandela, Rush, Fruitvale Station, All is Lost and in a year when there was every possibility of three actors of colour up for the best actor award as well as Robert Redford – who do you think connived to ‘block’ that lot….

  22. Bianca says:

I’m happy Sorrentino’s “La grande bellezza” made it so far. It is a fantastic movie.

    • sputnik says:

      it’s an incredible movie.

    • Tatiana says:

That movie is a masterpiece that deserves every award on earth. One of the best of the year if just only for the first scene with Rafaella Carra’s Far l’amore as musical companion. It remind me of Antonioni and Malick movies.

  23. QQ says:

Im jumpy clappy for Barkhad Abdi all the same even though is a long shot can ya’ll imagine? A guy with zero experience and then goes on to steal the show from Tom Hanks, ad libbing and all? Is kind of awesome

  24. Jegede says:

    No Bruhl? No Redford?
American Hustle WTF? Its no more than a Scorcesce parody
Who wants to live in a world were Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper are double Oscar nominees!

  25. insomniac says:

I laughed my head off when Jonah Hill got nominated again. I actually like him, but the last time he was nominated people went all “Scanners Exploding-Head Guy” about it. I can only imagine the reaction now that he’s a TWO TIME Oscar nominee. Bwahaha!

And yay, Leo finally gets another nomination. I hope Ejiofor gets Best Actor, though.

  26. MsT_Shady says:

Also, Amy Adams was the best thing in AH. She probably should win: not because AH is an amazing film ( I found it to be fairly middling and quite dull) but as a reward for her cumulative body of work, her consistently good performances.

Cate or Judy will get it though, if not her.

Gravity was some fun scienceish sci-fi. It really wasn’t that deep. I can’t see why it was nominated for anything other than its beautiful visual and technical achievements.

    • Kiddo says:

Julie and Julia was horrible, IMHO. I think Cate will win because she is the “it” girl of thespians of late.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

or Judy as a sort of life achievement award like Christopher Plummer in 2012

      • Kiddo says:

@stellalovejoydiver, She is a great actress, you don’t notice she’s doing it, since it’s so real and not overplayed.

    • Dingo says:

I so agree on Gravity – I just don’t get it! Sorry Sandra but you got Emma’s nomination in my book.

Loved Amy but also Cate. And so happy for Sally Hawkins she was amazing.

      • Tatiana says:

Actually Amy Adams got Emma’s spot as Sandra Bullock has all the precursors, a movie that is top three in the best picture race and one of the most acclaimed in recent time, also great individual reviews so she has been a lock since October.

    • Andrew1 says:

But technicality and beauty wouldn’t have been as impactful if it wasn’t for the movie being as good as it was as a whole..it takes more than technical stuff to make a movie that beautiful (which is why people should not be mad about it getting best director…it came from HIS mind and it would have fallen apart and would have become a generic action thriller without him). It’s actually my favorite of the year. I understand why people wouldn’t like it, but you can’t deny how much talent was out into it by everyone.

      • MsT_Shady says:

Yep, there was talent in and behind Gravity but that doesn’t make it a really memorable film.
I didn’t feel it had any compelling storyline that I could watch more than once, nor was it a meditation on the human condition.
I enjoyed it, I just wasn’t overwhelmed by it.

      • Aly says:

        +1

Best film of the year IMO

I have no doubt Alfonso has the best director oscar locked down

    • Syko says:

With you on Gravity. Yes, visually stunning, especially in 3D. But I went to see it with a friend, and we sat behind four elderly people. When the movie ended, we all just sat there, dumbfounded, because there never was much of a story to it, and we all agreed the acting was wooden, certainly not Oscar-worthy. I was also a little repelled that every five minutes Bullock was whipping out of her space suit to show us her miniscule shorts and braless tank top. If I were stranded in space, I’d keep my damn space suit on.

  27. L says:

No Blue is the Warmest Color OR Blackfish? Seriously?! That makes no sense.

Frankly, the best actress competition is the tightest its been in years with lots of several great performances, so I’m not surprised that Emma didn’t make the cut. (Frankly I didn’t find her role or that movie to be that impressive) Amy Adams has been nominated how many time now? But I think it’s going to go to Cate the great.

  28. gaggles says:

Ugh. These award shows are so dull. If at the SAG JLaw wins best supporting. I’m gonna throw a bet she wins at the oscars. I hope Meryl loses. After that ridiculous speech she gave. It just honestly feels like she did it on purpose. Yeah I’m cynical even about Meryl Streep. Some critics were saying she completely overacted her role. I still want to see her performance. I hope Cate Blanchett wins.

I’m sad that the best lead actor did not have as many black actors as expected. Most of these men are dull and weren’t involved in anything particularly challenging. I really dislike that Jared leto is nominated too. He’s just soooooo gross.

I wish they did the oscars every 4 years or every 2 years. It would make it so much more fun. The throwdowns that would occur!

    • toto says:

Thank You, i thought i am the only cynic of Meryl speech, American hustle is really weird movie this year most audience agree about it that it was nothing special but to grant all these nominations make me think its for Oscar rating and to bring more big names than the merit of their film.

      • frisbeejada says:

I read that Emma asked her to present the award and you are suggesting that Meryl Streep would take advantage of that on Harvey Weinstein’s say so. I just can’t see Meryl Streep doing what Harvey tells her to, I can see her telling Harvey to go and take a hike.

      • Mairead says:

It’s a fun film, but there’s better out there.

    • lisa says:

Oscar nominations were due by January 8th; Meryl’s introduction of Emma Thomson was January 7th. I doubt her speech had any impact at all on the Saving Mr. Banks shut-out.
I am surprised Robert Redford did not get nominated; many critics were predicting his win over Chiwetal for sentimental reasons alone. There was also a lot of early talk of Oprah winning over Lupita. So seeing both of these exclusion are surprises.
I enjoyed all the nominated movies

      • gaggles says:

Sorry still a cynic. She’s acting so bizarre lately. Usually you don’t hear much from her at all regarding these things. And her speech sounded full of it and pompous.

i think I have to side-eye her because she works so closely with Harvey Weinstein and so many other people like him in her industry. Yet not a peep about their behavior. I’m wondering how she excuses either one. It reeks of publicity stunt and pat me on the back for how enlightened I sound. And honestly, I’m pretty sure most people didn’t even get their nominations in till January 8th so it could have had an effect.

I don’t care either way, I still hope she loses to Cate Blanchett.

  29. Frenzy says:

Happy about Fassbender’s nomination. And this might be Leo’s year after being snubbed for so long 🙂

  30. bettyrose says:

    Dame Judi!

    • Mairead says:

I’m biased but should win an award for “British Actress That Can Actually Do An Irish Accent” 😆

It’s a shame that Philomena Us getting lost in a year of biopics and true-life stories as it is such an important story to tell, with a potentially devastating impact on thousands of middle-aged adopted US citizens

  31. lily says:

Damm AMPAS really loves David O. Russel, doesn’t it? American Hustle get nominated in all acting categories, just like Silver Lightning Playbook.
On the other hand, am I the only one who thinks his films are nothing special???

    • toto says:

      I totally agree with you.

    • Latisse says:

DOR is a dick. Seriously, Youtube him and Lily Tomlin, you will be shocked. That being said, I really love his movies, despite my self. He is one of the few in Hollywood that write really meaty, good roles for women, which is so weird because the Lily Tomlin clip would have led me to believe he was a giant misogynist. Maybe both are true: Giant misogynist who writes really meaty roles for women. Go figure.

      • frisbeejada says:

oops sorry posted under wrong comment I meant to agree with toto – effing hell I’m actually agreeing with toto – hi toto

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

        Just ask James Cameron !

      • Tapioca says:

OR Google DOR and “groping 19-year old niece”!

It’s bizarre, isn’t it? Someone like Chris Nolan who seems to be able to behave himself, gives women “strong” roles, casts actresses on ability not looks, and yet can’t write a great female character for s***.

    • frisbeejada says:

I agree with you as well, I couldn’t sit through Silver Linings Playbook aka ‘really serious mental health issues – lite’

  32. Neffie says:

12 Years a Slave was great, but its such a shame that black actors will only get recognised when they are playing slaves, housemaid, single abusive mothers, crooked cops, obese and illiterate and the list goes on. Its getting old and its time for a change.

    • Kiddo says:

      Excellent point.

    • AG-UK says:

      +100
I hear you. Also Lupita as good as she is, hopefully her career will flourish not fall by the way side.

    • Latisse says:

100% agree with you. I’m a black woman and I though TYAS was complete and utter torture porn. As was Precious. As was that for colored girls mess. As is almost any movie with black people that gets mainstream recognition.

It’s like, I’m black and I’m happy. You would think such a thing was impossible given the mainstream representation of black people. It is so freaking tiring. But at the same time I am happy that black actors/actresses are at least getting work.

      • Nick says:

I disagree about 12YAS being torture porn. It’s movie about slavey. Regardless how you feel about the subject, it needs to show the brutal abuse (physical, mental, and emotional) to be accurate. It’s like having a war movie (e.g. Saving Private Ryan) then criticizing it for its blood and gore. 12YAS was simply just depicting the reality of life for slaves during that time period.

Now I do agree about For Colored Girls. That’s just a movie filled with poor writing on negative stereotypes of black people.

      • jj says:

I agree with your comment on it being torture porn. Didn’t like the movie and was surprised Steve MCQueen was even interested in doing a movie like that. How about choosing a black actor as the lead for his next movie that has nothing to do with slavery. How come movies like Her or Gravity can’t have black people as the lead?

    • Dani2 says:

I definitely agree with this sentiment.

    • ViktoryGin says:

      My sentiments exactly.

While I don’t want to appear dismissive of the actors’ performances nor of the substance of the characters, it’s tragic that there isn’t more varied material that’s being developed. It’s a multi-faceted issue entailing money and public perception, I know. But it’s a damn shame that our Creative Expression powers that be have deemed that there’s a repertoire of only 5 basic roles that Black actors can play.

    • littlestar says:

      That’s a really great point!

    • taxi says:

@ Neffie – Kerry Washington, Naomie Harris, Angela Bassett, Denzel W, Jamie Foxx – don’t fit your stereotyping.

    • Aly says:

You can say the same for any non white person/actor. Hispanic, Asian, Black, Native American, etc..

It’s about time we had some movies that depicted us as heroes or doctors or what have you. Instead 95% of the time we are at the very BEST the side kick.

I mean hell, for all that it’s hard to get a decent role for a black person in a film, that’s nothing compared to a Native American. I can’t even remember the last time I saw them in a film, forget even getting NOMINATED for anything. And there’s no way Hollywood would let them make a movie about their struggles. Hollywood still has a far, far way to go in regards to doing right by POC in this business.

  33. LeLe25 says:

The Wolf of a Wall Street was nominated for best picture?? THE WOLF OF WALL STREET???? That was the biggest bucket of crap movie I’ve seen in a long time!! I left the theater half way through. Not only was it gratuitous, disgusting, and all around awful, it was BORING. I couldn’t believe how absolutely mind numbing it was. This just confirms my belief that somehow the academy is filled with awkward shmoes that have never had any life experiences, and are mentally a bunch of teenage boys. If this film wins I am going to RAGE!

    • toto says:

Its all about Oscar ratings and Leo needs to go with someone so the Oscar offered him 3 in one Marti Leo and Joahna

    • Grant says:

I loved Wolf of Wall Street! And that’s coming from someone who hates Jonah Hill. I think the fact that the movie is so divisive is exactly the reason it’s getting nominated.

    • MsT_Shady says:

      @Lele25

Lol! ITA on WOWS, quite boring.

Wall Street by Oliver Stone did it much, much better. Also, twenty years ago!

    • Tatiana says:

The Wolf of Walt street maybe a lot of things, but boring is not one of them. The movie could have been done better but it was very entertaining and has the best performance of Leo’s career.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Leo’s performances in The Departed, Blood Diamond, and Django were far superior to Wolf. Wolf of Wall Street, like pornography, became boring after the first few minutes. In fact, the editors could have cut everything but the scenes with McCaughney, the scenes with Kyle Chandler, the qualude overdose scene, and the horrible rape scene and its aftermath, and would have had a much better movie.

    • lol says:

LOL, nope! TWOWS is one of the best movies of all time. Some people simply didn’t get the message. And Leo is terrific (I hope he wins this time, long overdue) and so is the entire cast. Scorsese is a genius.

American Hustle on the other hand is … BORING AS HELL. Totally overrated. What a waste of time and money.

      • LeLe25 says:

Well I walked out half way through, so maybe I didn’t get the message. However the main reason I walked out is I was bored to tears! Seriously, it was super predictable and awfully repetitive. It did nothing for me. I will say Leo’s performance was convincing, but the movie itself was a mess. It screamed, “Please, pay attention to me, I’m an edgy, hip movie with drugs and boobies!” Bleh. I think Scorcese got frustrated at being shut out and lost his mind on this one.

    • Myrto says:

@LeLe25: WOWS was probably the most poorly edited movie of Scorcese. He could have cut half of the scenes and you would have still been able to follow the “plot”.
You didn’t miss anything at all by walking out. I wish I had done that instead of sitting through another scene where Leo is taking drugs/f***ing a girl. I was truly shocked when a woman appeared on the screen and…kept her clothes on!

  34. Kristen says:

So angry about no Blackfish nom. Also, why is everyone acting like The Butler didn’t exist?!?

    • JustaGirl says:

The Butler was another great movie! It deserved a nod too.

    • Tatiana says:

The Butler was an awful movie with cringe worthy performances that does not deserve to be rewarded by any awards body. I love that it didn’t get a single nomination.

    • Diana says:

Thank you, damn it! The Butler was excelent and it did not get even one nomination? whatever…

  35. JulieM says:

Thrilled that Amy Adams got nominated. Doesn’t stand a chance of winning, though.

    • GeeMoney says:

I know… I love her as an actress! She deserves an Oscar so much. Here’s hoping she pulls an upset.

  36. paola says:

I watched ’12 years a slave’ last night. I WANT Lupita and Fassbender for the win. they were beyond amazing. Lupita in particular. It would be nice to see Amy Adams to win for lead actress, plus for Di caprio, i haven’t seen his movie but i think at this point in his career he deserves the recognition.
Plus I love Cate Blnachett but I’m not sure i want her to win an oscar with a Woody Allen movie. He just isn’t good enough even if she was amazing in it.
Please Academy don’t make Julia Roberts a winner. Pleeeeeeasssseeeeeeeee *sobs loudly*

    • jj says:

Woody Allen is so freaking overrated, I would love somebody calling him out on why he never works with black actors?

  37. Megan says:

I saw the wolf of wall street and it was good, as were Leo and Jonah but they don’t deserve nominations. They just don’t they weren’t that good.

Idris was hosed like no other as was Michael B Jordan.

And I swear if J Law or Julia Roberts (the two most overrated actresses ever) win I will freak. They don’t deserve nominations much less wins. It better go to Lupita.

  38. Mia4S says:

“The Academy loves Christian Bale no matter what” What in the world are you talking about @Kaiser? The Fighter was his first and only nomination (and a deserved win) No American Psycho, Machinist, Rescue Dawn…nothing.

This catagory is (and should be) Matthew or Chiwetel.

    • lucy2 says:

Agreed – he was long overdue for some recognition, and well deserved his Fighter win.

    • Gail says:

Agreed. Bale has been snubbed by the Academy for years. It’s only the last few years that the Academy has begun to notice just how good he always has been.

    • lenje says:

Totally, totally agree. I would even say he was snubbed for his very first role in Empire of the Sun. The 12 year old Bale carried the whole 3-hr movie!

    • lol says:

Girl, Bale is a great actor. Period. But he was TERRIBLE in American Hustle. His spot belonged to Joaquin Phoenix.

      • Gail says:

That’s just like, your opinion, man.

In my opinion Bale’s work in Hustle is very understated for the character. It could so easily have been a caricature in a lesser actor’s hands. Instead he manages to be sad, funny and riveting in the role of what is a sleazy, two-timing asshole.

  39. Stef Leppard says:

Only nine best picture noms? Is one left off?

  40. Jackson says:

Yuck. Jonah Hillolol. No getting his head out of his ass now.

  41. bsh says:

So far I’ve seen Her, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Blue Jasmine, Gravity.

I started watching August:Osage County yesterday and after 15 minutes I was so incredibly bored that I had to stop it. I could see how Meryl got her umpteenth nomination, but the plot seemed to me like a melting pot of one and a million other choral movies about a dysfunctional family dealing with an alcoholic matriarch, a rebellious teenager, unresolved relationships and a lot of screaming and depressing reminiscing.

The other movies I mentioned were quite disappointing in different ways: American Hustle is so overrated, I can’t believe all the praise it’s been getting from critics and audience. It was as well a story which smelled of “already seen, already been told”, the soundtrack was also a bit random and I found the music to be sometimes too loud and distracting. However, I believe most of the actors in it were phenomenal: Bradley Cooper was the best, followed at a short distance by Christian Bale. I love Jennifer Lawrence but again, just like last year in SLP, I didn’t see an extraordinary performance. Very good, yes, but not more. She’s incredibly talented and had plenty of time ahead to win an Oscar. There was no need to rush it.

The Wolf of Wall Street: the best thing in/of it, if I had to analyse the whole “package”, were the scarce 10 minutes at the beginning which feature Matthew McConaughaey. Absolutely amazing! He was so convincing and into the character. I wished he had more screen time, but his character simply disappears. Leonardo DiCaprio: a great actor, but I can’t rate this one as his best performance. I liked him better in Shutter Island, The Departed or J. Edgar (and for the record, I hated that movie!). if he wins this year, it’s just because they need to compensate for all the amazing work he has done in the past 10 years. It would still be a righteous accomplishment.

Gravity: Oh, no! I mean, I admire the originality of the story and the baffling special effects, also, the first twenty minutes or so (just after the incident) were emotionally compelling. But to nominate Sandra Bullock for her performance?? She wears a spacesuit the entire time, floating into space (and God knows how much of it was a stunt-lady or CG effects), whereas her vocal interpretation was not that striking, at least not to me.

Finally, Her. Probably the most convincing of all the mentioned movies. A little gem in terms of story-line, photography and acting. Joaquin Phoenix was adorable, funny, and Scarlett Johansson did an remarkable job, she gave a spirit and soul to this anonymous OS, it was hard to believe that warm, passionate voice was generated by a software and did not belong to a beautiful lady hiding behind the corner. One of the flaws of the movie coincides, in my opinion, with the fact that we might predict very soon how it’s going to end (**SPOILER AHEAD** not good, at least not for what regards the main relationship). Call me old-fashioned, but to me it is still impossible to relate to a virtual love story, something which lacks the use of most of the five senses, and particularly the physical presence of your beloved one. Therefore, it’s not like you expect the two of them to get married and have Sir-babies and live happily ever after.

In conclusion, I am looking forward to seeing 12 years a slave, Philomena and The Dallas Buyers Club, because so far none of these movies managed to blow me away.

    • Kiddo says:

Thanks for the reviews, I went, ” Na-na-na, I don’t hear you” on the spoiler, I haven’t seen ‘Her’ yet.

    • AG-UK says:

I too am wary of that August: Osage County I just feel it has that oh I am ACTING vibe which might annoy me the Southern ranting it’s not out here yet but might save it for a long haul flight.. when I can pause and take a nap and start again. Philomena was really good I wasn’t sure what I expected but she actually both of them were very good.

      • LadySlippers says:

I read the play and I was hooked after a few lines. The play was that riveting but it’ll be interesting to see how well that translates to the big screen.

      • Peppa says:

I saw the play and enjoyed it, but I ended up hating the movie. I’m a big Meryl fangirl, but her scenery chewing got on my last nerve. I preferred Julia’s performance to Meryl’s, which is something I thought I would never say!

      • Lilacflowers says:

August: Osage County was a lot of scenery chewing from Streep and Roberts. There are some good performances in the movie but they come from Julianne Nicholson, Chris Cooper, and Margo Martindale, none of whom were nominated for anything.

    • Irishae says:

I agree with you on Sandra Bullock’s “vocal interpretation.” I chuckled several times during moments that weren’t supposed to be funny. She was just not believable. I also enjoyed the first 20 minutes or so, which were filled with lots of impending dread. From there it became an almost comical jack-in-the-box of “what now?” technical issues.

    • Chloe says:

Great reviews I have to say I agree with you on American Hustle, unfortunately I haven’t seen any of the other movies yet, I have seen 12 Years,Capt. Philips and Dallas Buyers Club and I enjoyed both of those movies along with the actors performances.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’ve seen all the nominated films. I agree with you that August: Osage was boring with a lot of overacting. American Hustle needed serious editing. Tightening up would have made it a much better film. The film is set in Camden, NJ but much of it was filmed in Boston and, as a Bostonian, I found that a bit distracting but others won’t. I found the story very entertaining. Wolf of Wall Street – Matthew’s performance is the only reason to see the film and he is only in the first few minutes of a three hour movie. I see lots and lots of movies and I rank this as one of the worst I saw this year. Three hours of DiCaprio snorting cocaine off the butts, breasts, and stomachs of naked women. I have a long list of films I thought far more deserving of a nomination than this one. I can’t even understand how this misogynistic mess got an adapted screenplay nomination over Joss Whedon’s fabulous Much Ado About Nothing. I loved Gravity, it was such a total experience, like an amusement park ride. Anyone who watches that on a television screen will miss the trip completely. Bullock did do most of her own stuntwork – she was suspended upside down for weeks. Philomena is a nice, enjoyable movie about a sad era in Irish history. I saw Her and Wolf on the same day and much preferred Her. It is sweet, sad, and wistful, and speaks to our need to connect but our inability to do so. Twelve Years a Slave is brutal and gut-wrenching with tremendous performances all around. Dallas Buyers Club is heartbreaking. The wrecked beauty of Leto’s Rayon just tore me apart.

    • Aly says:

Most people I’ve heard from say that Gravity was the best picture of the year, and after watching all the nominated films I agree. However i don’t think it will win best picture. 12 Years a Slave will win, but I’m quite certain Mr.Cuaron will win best director, as he should. Gravity was simply breathtaking. It’s raised the bar for future film making.

  42. Lopusta says:

Totally rooting for 12 years a slave to sweep the oscars. I hope it doesn’t get the golden globe treatment… Am I the only one? But I kind of think Meryl speech harmed Emma’s chances of getting nominated. Just a thought though

  43. Dea says:

I totally agree with everything you said.
Especially Meryl doing that speech on purpose! I don’t care how right she is,it wasn’t the fit moment.
Also I’m sad about the lack of black actors,Fruitvale got totally snubbed : Michael and Octavia should have got a nom.

    • Leah says:

Fruitvale station deserved a nom. They could have recognised a young talent like Michael B Jordan. But you know they will probably give the award to one of the hollywood boys club either Leo or Matthew MC. It was a really strong year for black actors but i doubt any of them will win anything. Happy for Fassbender though that he is finally given a nom. Its about time.

    • bsh says:

Which speech are you guys talking about? I must have missed something..

    • Lilacflowers says:

While I would prefer to see Emma Thompson nominated this year for SMB instead of Meryl Streep for AOC, Meryl’s speech was made too late to have any impact on the nominations. And the women are friends.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Michael B. Jordan definitely should have been nominated over Leo and Octavia over Julia Roberts. Octavia’s performance in Fruitvale Station was so strong and heartbreaking.

  44. Leah says:

Its always the same actors who get nominated. Leo, Christian Bale etc. Its like a club of actors that just needs to be in a movie and they get nominated.
I hope Chiwetel ejifor wins, that would be a breath of fresh air.

    • Gail says:

Bale always gets nominated – in what world? He has only other nomination and win. Deservedly so for “The fighter” – miles better than any actor that year. He has has been snubbed over and over by the Academy – American Psycho, Rescue Dawn, 3:10 to Yuma and yes, his first film – Empire of the Sun.

      • Leah says:

None of those a great movies. Once he started appearing in overall good movies he got noms. Bradley Copper and Bale should not have been nominated this year. Bale was outstanding in the Fighter he thoroughly deserved that win. Feel bad for Robert Redford who got overlooked in a much less showy but more difficult part then Leo and bale.

      • sapphoandgrits says:

“Empire of the Sun” not a great movie? It should have won Best Picture, Best Picture, and Bale should have won. It holds up, too. A fantastic movie based on a fantastic roman a clef.

      • Leah says:

I googled it. He was like 12 or 13 at the time. Are you being serious? What actor that age wins best actor? Confused at your post.

      • Gail says:

Exactly. His age was the only reason he didn’t get a nomination. Watch it if you can – he’s phenomenal. Incidentally the movies of his that you said were not good – have you actually seen any of them?

      • taxi says:

@Leah – Tatum O’Neal & Anna Paquin won Oscars at ages 9 or 10. Quvenzhane Wallis was nommed for Beasts of the Southern Wild, which she made when she was 6. Abigail Breslin was nominated young too.

      • sapphoandgrits says:

Also, Keisha Castle-Hughes was given a Best Actress nom for “Whalerider” at 12 (she was about 11 when she filmed it).

And, yes, Bale deserved Best Actor for “Empire of the Sun.” The performance was that good.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Bale was great in Empire of the Sun, as were a number of the supporting players like Miranda Richardson and John Malkovich.

    • Hm says:

      Leo’s always nominated? LMFAO.

I hope Leo wins, he deserves.

      • Hannah says:

Leo has been nominated 5 times. At not yet 40 I think that’s ok. Joaquin Phoenix arguably a more talented actor and the same has only been nominated a few times. Leo fans have such a victim complex on his behalf it’s ridiculous. There are great actors like Robert Redford that’s never even won the best actor award. Smh.

  45. Sonia says:

No Emma Thompson? Really? She was amazing in Saving Mr Banks. And I am little bit sad that there is no Tom Hanks since he was really good in Captain Phillips but than again voters were probably split between Mr Banks and Captain, still happy to see Barkhad Abdi there and something tells me that it is also because of Tom Hanks influence on the Academy. I haven’t seen Dallas Buyers Club but still I hope that Fassbender wins Best supporting actor. And also Lupita, please please let Lupita win because in this unfair world that we are living in I am not so sure that she will have this kind of chance again and she was simply incredible in 12 Years a slave. I love Jennifer L. but American Hustle was so boring that I don’t even understand all that love from Academy’s voters. 3 hours of sex, drugs and alcohol – obviously perfect movie to receive all this recognition. But still Di Caprio was good and as much as I hate to say this, J. Hill was also good in it.
    (Sorry for my english)

  46. emmie_a says:

I want to cross off Matthew’s name because Joaquin deserves a nomination more than him… even if he doesn’t want one.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Matthew’s is not the name I want crossed off that list. He belongs there and so does Joaquin Phoenix or Robert Redford, but not Leo. I wish they would expand the acting categories like they did for Best Film, but even still Leo in Wolf would not be on my list of nominations even if they went up to nine or ten films. He basically was playing Leo.

  47. original kay says:

    go judi!

sad it’s the same 5 movies over and over.

    • bsh says:

I totally agree!! Why does it have to be the same movies? They are not the best movies, they’re just the most-hyped ones!

  48. lenje says:

While as a Balehead I’m thrilled that he got nominated, in my objective opinion Joaquin Phoenix should get in instead of him. I haven’t seen the Wolf of Wall Street, so I don’t know how strong Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill are. I’m also disappointed that Idris Elba is snubbed, but I’ve seen The Long Walk to Freedom. Idris is stellar, but the movie itself lacks coherent story-telling. I understand it was based on Mandela’s biography with the same title, but there are holes here and there, which is a shame because both Idris AND Naomi are exquisite.

  49. sapphoandgrits says:

I am REALLY surprised neither Emma Thompson nor Tom Hanks got nominations. Emma not getting one is a legit snub.

I’m surprised Sandra Bullock was nominated for Best Actress, although I love her, and she was great in “Gravity.” I hope Amy Adams wins that category.

JONAH HILL?! I know he was good, but still keep thinking about “Get Him to the Greek” and being raped by the dancer/hooker.

As an American lesbian, I am soooo happy “Blue Is the Warmest Color” was excluded.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Jonah Hill good? Jonah Hill was basically playing Jonah Hill with false teeth and false genitals (it was a prosthetic) in Wolf. Matthew McConnaughey had the far superior supporting performance in that film and was far more deserving of a supporting nomination than Hill. Daniel Bruhl in Rush was also far more deserving than Hill. Or Steve Coogan in Philomena. Will Forte in Nebraska. Jake Gyllenhall in Prisoners. Or Chris Cooper, who was about the only thing worth watching in August: Osage County. (Cooper, Martindale, and Julianne Nicholson could have been in their own film without all the others and that would have been far more watchable.)

  50. sapphoandgrits says:

Major kudos to Sally Hawkins’ nomination. She’s a fantastic and underrated actress, and would be a superstar if she had more stereotypical “Hollywood” looks. She’s a gem in anything she does, all the way back to “Fingersmith” and “Vera Drake.”

  51. Pam says:

Glad to see Christian Bale get the nod.

  52. Sam says:

Someone please give me hope that jennifer lawrence won’t win and Leo won’t win either, I couldn’t tolerate it . And I know everyone here wants 12 years a slave to win but I hope someone else takes it. I personally loved gravity and american hustle.

    • Diana says:

I don’t want 12 years to win either. Although I’m sure it will. Haven’t seen Husle, hopefully this weekend.

  53. Happyhat says:

I’m sooooo out of the loop – I’ve not seen any of the films nominated, apart from the Hobbit.

But then I stopped watching the Oscars when ‘As Good as it Gets’ won everything, and Helen Hunt won best actress. I can’t stand her.

I always have to remember that the Oscars aren’t really about achievement in an artistic field as they are an industry award hustle. I mean, the fact that you have to pitch your film ‘for your consideration’ is kinda…weird in my mind. Whoever winds the ‘best’ anything isn’t necessarily going to be the actual best that year.

  54. Squeakie says:

Oh wow I didn’t realize there were only 5 good movies that came out this year. Noms are almost the same in every category. Hope Amy Adams wins for American hustle, Gravity bored me to tears.

  55. Nikki says:

my pick & win for best original song would have been
“I See Fire” by ed sheeran for the hobbit: the desolation of smaug.

  56. Tatiana says:

I’m sad that Stories we tell didn’t get a nomination in best documentary but almost every other category is great. I’m rooting for Leo who for me gave the best performance of the year alongside Robert Reford (although I don’t think he has a chance but you never know and the best actor race seems open), Cate (who at this point is the only sure thing and has the most acclaimed role since Mirren in The Queen), The Great Beauty in best forgein film, Her in best original screenplay and original song (so happy for Karen O). Also The act of killing for best doc and Alfonfo Cuaron for best director.

  57. aquarius64 says:

    Congratulations to Lupita Nyong’o!!!

  58. Nene says:

I know it seems a little far-fetched atm but I’ve got a feeling Martin Scorcese and Leo Dicaprio are in for the win this year,in what I call a ‘pity’ oscar.
If this happens as I think it’s likely to,then it will confirm my suspicion of some years now- that the Academy gives awards according to roles that portrays them as an intelligent and classy group of people. Secondly, the Academy gives what I call the ‘sympathy or pity’ oscar, like ” sorry for all those years we snubbed you but this is it…”
Unfortunately this is always at the expense of other great or usually better performances. And the performances are often not the best of the said actor or actress or director’s carreer like in Leo’s and Scorcese’s WOWS.

However I really hope Lupita,Chiwetel or Leo,Fassy,Cate and Steve win.

  59. MSat says:

Can we talk about what an overrated piece of crap August: Osage County was? Please? I love the play, but the movie was garbage. Not even Her Fierceness Madame Meryl could save it. How’d it get so much love from award-land??

    • Kimberly says:

It’s only getting so much recognition mainly because of Meryl and probably Julia. Oh and if I’m not mistaken, that PIG (Harvey Weinstein) is one of the producers of the film.

    • Peppa says:

Couldn’t agree more! I loved the play and hated the movie. The nominations are totally because of Weinstein IMHO.

  60. ViktoryGin says:

Geez. Again? Can we PLEASE declare a moritorium on the Meryl Streep nominations? I love her as much as the next person, but I wish the Academy would stop worshiping at the shrine of Meryl. We get it. The woman’s got a thespian halo about her head. But really…it’s just exhausting, predictable, and biased at this point. There are other actresses who are capable of delivering worthy performances.

    • MavenTheFirst says:

Agreed. And does she really need that much validation? Or is she going for a new Oscar record? Couldn’t she just bow out from nominations, or at the very least out of those she thought weren’t her best work? Seriously, is Meryl a glutton or something? What’s the deal here?

  61. Irishae says:

I’m disappointed that Tom Hanks didn’t get nominated for “Captain Phillips,” one of my favorite movies this year. I know it’s Tom, he has his statues already, but I was incredibly moved by his performance. I had a small bit of hope that Paul Greengrass would somehow end up in the director’s category as well.

  62. Miss M says:

Can we just take a minute and celebrate Leo’s nomination? The academy is finally getting it right.

    • Kimberly says:

Leo’s been nominated many times before, so I don’t think it’s worth celebrating. Now……………. if the academy pulls their heads out of their asses and give Leo an Oscar in the near future, then that’s something to celebrate.

      • Miss M says:

But last year he deserved a nomination for the Tarantino movie and he didnt get it.

As for winning, If it happens my jaw will drop…

  63. Kimberly says:

Although, I think the Oscars are BS (most of the time because of all the politics involved)………..I still felt compelled to open this article, just to see who was nominated and snubbed because I had really high hopes for (12 Years a Slave) to be nominated in the major categories. I’m so relieved that my boy Chiwetel, Lupita (my kenyan goddess), sexy Fassbender, and Steve McQueen were nominted. 😀 This movie really deserves A LOT of recognition.

  64. MavenTheFirst says:

Meh. It’s all so predictable, so Hollywood.

  65. Mathis says:

Big Meh, I know for sure that Joaquin won’t get nominated and he won’t even bother trying , so, I’m just glad they nominated The Great Beauty, probably the best Italian movie of the past decade, and I can go on and on about what an absolutely brilliant, delicate, heart breaking performance Toni Sevillo has showed. Servillo is arguably the greatest Italian actor alive, but almost criminally underseen by non Europeans cause he only did Italian/French/German language films. Really hope Sorrentino get it, though technically it will be an award for the country not the director.
The Grandmaster got nominated for costumes and cinematography but not the best foreign language film? That’s odd. But the cinematography was the only thing I loved about that clumsy movie, so yeah, whatever.
And I kinda hope Karen O get the best song award, but it would take a miracle to beat Let It Go…

  66. Kimberly says:

@ Miss M…………….I highly doubt he will win this year. Matthew McConaughey or Christian Bale might pull an upset this year. Anyway I 100% agree that Leo should’ve been nominated for Django Unchained. As much as I LOVE Christoph Waltz, I was disappointed that he was nominated and won the Oscar instead.

  67. Meggin says:

I haven’t seen any of these films… and that’s always the case for me with the Oscars! LOL.

  68. Kate says:

I think Amy Adams really could have been a double nom this year. She was amazing in “Her”. Also the most human thing in Hustle.

    • pwal says:

I loved Amy Adams in Her too. In fact, I wished Spike Jonze was nominated for directing instead of David O. Russell. AH was an unholy mess, save one sequence and yet, Her, was handled brilliantly throughout, considering the subject matter. It was 5-10 minutes too long, but at least it delivered, in terms of humor, intelligence, and heart.

And for the first time in a long time, I liked Scarlett Johannson(sp). Usually, I find her acting guarding, but her Samantha was warm, funny-just lovely.

      • jensies says:

I thought Scarlett was amazing as Samantha, and I normally don’t like her. Totally agree with you.

I find myself actually upset that Joaquin Phoenix didn’t get a nod. That was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

  69. AlexL says:

    Kaiser,

Blue is the Warmest Colour wasn’t eligible for Foreign Language Film since it was released in France after the cutoff date to be considered in the foreign category. Maybe next year, though.

  70. bsh says:

Slightly off-topic. A question to all the British ladies: I will be in the UK for the next three months, what are the rules about online streaming over there? I don’t want to mess with the law 🙂

  71. July says:

Very predictable this year. I’m disappointed Emma Thompson didn’t get nominated. Hope Amy and Leo will win, though. They both are good actors

  72. Mairead says:

Am I just missing something but I am flummoxed as to how Bradley Cooper keeps getting these nominations, especially for ‘American Hustle’. To me he was just the gobshite from The Hangover in curlers, especially compared to Bale/Adams/Law. Jeremy Renner’s and his glorious hair deserved it way more – he was so loveable as Carmine!

This is especially as Daniel Brühl as absolutely nailed it and carried off every scene as Niki Lauda.

The Academy always does this – overlooks great performances and then nominates or awards for weak performances. Take Clooney and Kidman. I don’t hugely rate Clooney as he needs a good director to stop him from just being himself, like in ‘Up In The Air’. But where he actually did some acting – The Men Who Stare At Goats- not a sausage. Kidman won for The Hours, (in which Julianne Moore was far superior), but not in Dogville which is arguably her best work. I know I say all this every year, but they don’t seem to want to prove me wrong!

    • pwal says:

Yeah… I preferred Renner over Cooper too.

    • lenje says:

Oh my God, finally another one who recognizes the little gem that is The Men Who Stare At Goats! Clooney is very good in it and IMO more deserving a nom than The Descendants — and the movie itself is brilliantly hilarious.

    • Gail says:

I am a Balehead and so is very happy that Bale is nominated. But I’m so glad to see at least one person saying how good Renner was in AH. He deserved the nomination in place of Cooper who just like JLaw overplayed his character. Renner was so good and am bummed that almost no one seemed to have noticed it.

      • Mairead says:

Don’t worry Gail, I’m in your corner. I thought Bale was good too. I was so busy marvelling at his magnificent comb-around and Renner’s do – it’s worth it for them alone – that it took me a while to realise how great Renner’s Carmine was. The real romance was his and Bale’s character; the scene with the microwave was just too bloody cute. RIP “science oven”

I will say that it deserves every award it gets for hair, makeup and costume. I heard that they began working on the hair before almost anything else and it shows!

  73. Lucinda says:

So out of all the movies that came out in the past year, only 11 merit any nominations in the major awards. 34 slots. 11 movies. Interesting. Yup, Oscars are totally irrelevant.

  74. Evi says:

I’m hoping Wolf of Wall Street doesn’t get any. This film is nothing different, just a hyped up/on steroids take on Wall Street, along the lines of previous films.
I’m also disappointed that Scorsese chose to direct such a story/film.

  75. jes_sayin says:

I am absolutely dumbfounded by all the American Hustle praise. The movie was AWFUL. So boring. And the acting.. Oscars? And BEST PICTURE??? Seriously? (btw, Jennifer Lawrence was good, but she was in the movie for a total of 12 minutes!)

  76. Aly says:

Looking forward to seeing Alfonso Cuaron win his oscar. Gravity was my favorite movie of the year. And if Lupita, Chewy and Jared Leto don’t win their oscars I will riot!

  77. Danskins says:

Academy awards nominations (and ceremony) suck as usual. Won’t be watching this year in addition to past years. It’s a hugely biased high school-like popularity contest and nothing else, IMO.

  78. renalda says:

I know Tom Hanks has had more than his fair share of Oscar goodness over the years, but I must say I was deeply disappointed not to see him nominated. It’s weird, but I feel like I’ve grown up with this guy. The first few minutes I see of him in a movie always brings a smile to my face. I am sad that he did not receive his due this year. Some day Tom will be gone, and movies will be a far lesser experience without him. 🙁

    • Mairead says:

He was very good as Uncle Walt all right. I thought that was such a good film; I actually enjoyed it more than American Hustle.

Paul Giamatti and Colin Farrell were so lovely in it too.
