Tilda Swinton wears a cozy knit ensemble at the Chanel show: fabulous or fug?

Here are some photos from yesterday’s Chanel Haute-Couture show at Paris Fashion Week. This was the best turnout for any of the Paris shows I’ve seen so far, but as I said yesterday, that isn’t saying much. Paris Fashion Week has been kind of a dud, gossip-wise and celebrity-wise. But Tilda Swinton is here to make it all better!

Tilda’s date for the Chanel show was her good friend and favorite designer (yes, her favorite!) Haider Ackermann. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Haider… at first, I thought he was Sandro Kopp, Tilda’s long-time boyfriend. Tilda seems to like the same kind of look in men, doesn’t she? So, should we take about Tilda’s outfit? I’m assuming it’s Chanel. It looks… er… I mean, she’s pulling it off, I guess. It looks like a knit Christmas tree skirt. The whole outfit is rather Christmasy to me, actually. It seems cozy and like something my mom would buy for me.

I’m including some photos of the other big-name ladies at the Chanel show, including Lily Allen, Olga Kurylenko, Livia Firth and Michelle Rodriguez. I hate Lily’s coat – that looks so cheap and retro, like something you would find at the bottom of the bin at the thrift store. Livia looks elegant as always, and Olga looks okay. I guess Michelle looks the best, which is weird because she’s rarely the best dressed.

If Tilda’s outfit were on ANY OTHER person in the world (barring Cate Blanchett), they would look completely insane. Tilda merely looks like a quirkily eccentric old-money aristocratic type. I love her so much… 😍

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have to agree. Somehow she looks really pretty in what is an extremely hideous ensemble.

      • Kali says:

I know, right? It’s like Countess Tilda Von Fabulosington Swintonstein was just swanning around her house doing something and then decided to put on that jersey and tie that scarf at a jaunty angle for a walk down to the shops. I’ve clearly put far too much thought into this.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

And all the villagers love her because she is so kind, yet mysterious. There’s a hint of sadness behind her brave front…

      • Kali says:

Because she lost her son in a tragic war somewhere and to remember him, she donates a full-ride university scholarship to a worthy boy in the village and everyone knows it’s the slightly batty yet totally amazing lady who lives in the manor on the hill but nobody says anything (because of the tragic loss of son). Goddammit, we’ve got indie drama gold here. Is there a writer here? Get on this. Please. I will pay you the contents of my handbag (currently two sticks of gum, $10 and a MAC lipstick).

      • Shaniqua Nunyadambidness says:

Lulz. You girls. Awesomeness right here.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I had the same thought. Only Tilda and Care could pull off this look. Tilda looks great from the waist up but I don’t like the bottom half if the outfit. And how us michelle Rodriguez the best dressed? She looks like a ridiculous cliche.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Yup you said it. It’s fug, but she’s FAB!

    • Miffy says:

Right on! I don’t know what kind of wizardry is going on here but Tilda actually makes this work. It’s official, the woman could throw some heels on over a cow onesie (plush udder and all) and she’d look incredible.

    • Eleonor says:

I was going to write the same thing.

    • snark says:

Swinton can pretty much pull anything off!

  2. Kristen says:

Tilda’s outfit is my spirit animal. Seriously, the colors and textures and combo is like my inner self, turned into an outfit. I’m not explaining this very well, but I love it.

  3. MrsBPitt says:

They all look bad to me!

  4. notpretentious says:

I like the top part of her outfit anyway, the skirt is FUG!

  5. blue marie says:

I like Tilda’s sweater, but the skirt looks itchy.

  6. JudyK says:

Like Tilda and know she’s eccentric, but, uh…no.

Love the blue/red duster coat outfit…at first, I thought, “What?” But there’s something about it I just find adorable.

  7. bns says:

She looks incredible. So chic and cool.

  8. MinnFinn says:

Oh my, Lily Allen looks just like Jo Anne Worley from Laugh-In.

  9. Kiddo says:

Tilda’s skirt reminds me of classic Peruvian (?) clothing. I’ll be the odd one out, but I kind of like the mixing of old with the modern. One thing I really don’t like though, is the way the tight pants gap at the ankle on the actresses. It’s as if the pants were made for models with much longer legs and no one bothered to tailor them. Maybe that was the aesthetic he was going for, but I don’t care for it. I like it about as much as the stupid spiraling flaps that Kardashian’s designer is so fond of. It seems to be a vanity detail (for the designer) that adds nothing to the art.

  10. smee says:

When a grey skirt and white blouse make you the best dressed at an event, you know you’ve got trouble. Pert near all of them look terrible – even Tilda (just her clothes, she looks beautiful as always).

The skirt together with the sweater is just too much. It truly does look like something a mom would love to see her daughter in. Far too prissy for me (and Ms. Swinton, imo)

  11. Frida_K says:

Tilda look marvelous…it’s an odd ensemble, but Kali’s description up thread (“Countess Tilda Von Fabulosington Swintonstein was just swanning around “) is perfect.

Did Michelle Gonzalez get drunk and start lurching about and swearing?

  12. Hannah says:

I love that Tilda brought her favorite designer to somebody else’s fashion show. Hehe.

  13. Kiddo says:

Sorry, I tried to save this to my last comment. I don’t want to hog the thread, but it didn’t work.

Having just seen The Breakfast Club on Reelz, Olga’s entire outfit would work on the character who stole things and was the female outcast. I can’t remember her name, but I think she actually wore this outfit, only in dark hues. lol

  14. L says:

I love Tilda’s sweater and skirt. I just don’t think I love them together.

  15. Kelly says:

I went to see Only Lovers Left Alive for TH and came out in love with this woman.
She’s amazing and so unique, I want her to adopt me or something!

  16. Ice Maiden says:

Never mind Tilda’s clothes. Look at her SKIN! Luminous.

Why does this woman not have a huge cosmetics contract? I don’t normally pay much attention to such things, but I would buy whatever Tilda was selling.

  17. Ann says:

I LOVE Tilda and think she can wear anything. Except this. That is one truly fug outfit, head to toe. EYES: UNSEE!

    • Myrto says:

I agree. The top is alright but the skirt is awful. It looks like the carpet in my mother’s bathroom. Seriously.
The absolute worst had to be Michelle Rodriguez. What a mess.
I like Olga’s outfit the best. Simple and elegant.

  18. I Choose Me says:

“I know, right? It’s like Countess Tilda Von Fabulosington Swintonstein was just swanning around her house doing something and then decided to put on that jersey and tie that scarf at a jaunty angle for a walk down to the shops.”

^THIS! This is why I love Celebitchy. 😀

Huh. I actually kind of really like Lily’s coat. Well the colour anyway. But no beuno to the velvet (?) leather pants combo. It took me a good two minutes to figure out that they weren’t leg warmers.

  19. lower-case deb says:

    Those shoes doe!!

  20. Size Does Matter says:

    Who is this Olga person?

  21. ItSetsYou says:

Tilda is an Artist and she looks like one, no matter what she wears. She’s very unique and can pull off any outfit.

  22. Nerd Alert says:

I think everyone looks bad except Michelle, who I would totally flip sides for right now…rwar.

As for Tilda? Still not enamored…still barely get the appeal. I file her along with Dita Von Teese in “Celebitchy obsessions I don’t agree with”

  23. Ellie66 says:

I think sometimes the designers are just
messing with rich and famous peoples minds by putting them in these hideous clothes. Good lord I seen better fashion at a nursing home. 🙁

  24. kitty-bye says:

Love her & I would wear it, yet it reminds me of a blankie! from a couch or poncho. The top looks soft & the bottom looks a bit itchy.
