George Clooney talks Sandy Bullock, Matty D, Leo & more during his Reddit AMA

George Clooney did a Reddit Ask Me Anything. Everyone is doing those AMAs these days. I give credit to Benedict Cumberbatch! No, I know Cumby wasn’t the first, but he was one of the best AMAs over the past year. But Clooney is here to take everybody down. Clooney will charm your pants off. You can read Clooney’s AMA here, I’ll just do some highlights (he gave long answers to a lot of questions, he must have been sitting on there for a really long time).

Shading Daniel Day Lewis: “I’m a cobbler, I like to make shoes. Let me just tell you this. When Daniel Day-Lewis was spending all his time playing Lincoln, I was just fixing shoes. He’s spending all the time focused on the hat, and the pipe, and getting into character, and I remained focused – with the overalls and the hammer.”

Working on From Dusk Til Dawn: “Quentin directed an episode of ER and Rob and he were working on this project at the time and Quentin came over and said ‘You wanna come in and meet on this project?’ Yeah, are you kidding? I’d get to work with Juliette Lewis and Harvey Keitel and Rob and Salma and Quentin. I was playing a pediatrician on a hospital show and all of a sudden I get to murder people? I thought that was pretty great. I got to spend 8 weeks or so in the Titty Twister, what was the downside?”

Why do you have such lonely eyes? “I actually have only one lonely eye. The other eye’s got nothin’ but friends.”

The best prank played on George: “It was Brad, we were shooting Oceans 12 in my hometown in Lake Cuomo and he had a flyer sent around saying George only wants to be called by his character’s name Danny Ocean, don’t look him in the eyes, and it got into the local paper. As you know, jokes don’t translate at all, and they called me il divo, and said that I was treating the crew like shit. When it got into the paper I came downstairs and Brad had the paper in his hand, and I said “You’re mine from here on out.” Brad just said, “Please don’t harm my children.” Yeah, he’s done some pretty rotten things.”

Reading list: “I’ve been spending the last year trying to get through the Cat in the Hat series. But, I’m still not there – I’m a slow reader. You know I do read but I don’t read as much as I’d like to. And why read when there’s such good television? I have been going back to some classics lately. You know, for a period of time in your career you tend to read books just to see if you want to adapt them or make them into a film then all of a sudden you realize you’re just reading that. I’m reading some classics I haven’t read in 30 years, I’ve got an original copy of To Kill A Mockingbird, a signed original copy, and I pulled that out 2 months ago. You tend to forget how great the great writers are.”

Beating Leonardo at basketball: “It’s true. That was a fun day. It’s always fun when you play people younger than you and win. We’re playing a bunch of six year olds tomorrow.”

Amy Poehler & Tina Fey need to watch out: “You know I got really good by Tina and Amy the other day and I’m working on getting them back in a big way. But for the most part most of the time when it’s bad it’s actually funny. You actually feel bad for the comedians up on stage cause you know if you’ve ever gone to a comedy club and you see somebody bomb it makes you cringe. Shows like that are designed to have fun with you without being devastatingly unkind. I’ve been the target of a couple of stupid jokes that didn’t work, but in general I’ve only seen a couple that were really vicious toward people, and they didn’t work. When they don’t work you feel badly for the person doing it.”

His favorite actor to work with: “Let me think about this in the best possible way that doesn’t get me murdered by all other actors I’ve worked with. I don’t know…I’ve done 6 films with Damon now, so I guess I do enjoy working with him, though you wouldn’t know it. I’ve been really lucky to work with people who enjoy what they do. I’ve worked with a couple of turkeys, but I’ve mostly been really lucky.”

Sandra Bullock is a drunk: “It’s tricky cause Sandy drinks so much that oftentimes it’s just hard to keep her upright. No, you know, Sandy and I have known each other for over 20 years and we both were struggling actors when we first met. She was dating a friend of mine at the time who’s still a good friend of ours. Every time we’re together it’s funny. She’s somebody I adore, really, she’s just fun to be in a room with. I’m sure people will assume people aren’t quite who they appear to be on screen—they’re shorter or taller or meaner or dumber—but Sandy is exactly what she appears on screen, an incredibly charming woman who’s really just fun to hang out with. Very smart and centered, even though she does drink a lot.”

Career embarrassments: “Well I wasn’t thrilled with the nipples on the batsuit. You know that’s not something you really think about when you’re putting it on. You figure all batsuits have nipples and then you realize yours was really the first. Batman was just constantly cold I guess. But I have plenty of other things that I’m really obviously embarrassed about too. Oftentimes it’ll be stumbling out of a bar drunk or something dumb like that but as you get older a major goal in life is try to do less and less embarrassing things. You know, try not to face plant publicly as often as possible.”

Advice for young filmmakers: “First of all, have a point of view and have a story to tell, and go shoot it. In the last 10 years things have changed. You can shoot your own film at a cost you can afford, get it up and get it seen. Don’t wait for the establishment to tell you you can do it, just go to work. It used to be that you couldn’t get a job until you were in the Screen Actors Guild, which you couldn’t do if you weren’t in the union, and its not like that anymore. That’s how we have artists like Justin Bieber. The world is better for it now.”

What else is there to say? The man’s a charmer, a wit, a bon vivant, a scoundrel and prankster. You will never really get one over on Clooney, will you? And seriously, if the worst thing we can say about him is that he only dates 30-year-old budget models, waitresses and Vegas party girls, that’s probably not the worst thing. Also: everyone loves Matty D! EVERYONE.

Um… I thought he said only moron’s go on social media? Mind you Brad did not have kids while in Ocean’s 12 so I guess he isn’t as smart as he tries to make out

    • Helvetica says:

Brad was already with Angelina when they did the last Ocean’s together, so yes, children.

And as for social media–he did say that. Though I’m not sure where it was mentioned in this article? Maybe I didn’t see it.

George is always a good interview. Loved is funny comments about his lonely eyeball and basketball w/ 6 yr olds. Hollywood doesn’t make them like him often. He’s a class act.

      • Madi says:

He wasn’t with Angie during Ocean’s 12 which was when he filmed in Lake Como. He got with her a year later while shooting Mr and Mrs Smith. He was with Jennifer Aniston during Ocean’s 12. Social media isn’t mentioned above, but reddit is social media

      • Durango says:

Could someone explain the “lonely eyeball” joke to me, please? I saw the AMA on Reddit and this joke got quite possibly the biggest response, but I couldn’t understand why. I don’t know if I’m overthinking it or if I’m missing a reference…

    • Diana says:

lol I wondered about that as well. “Ocean’s 12” came out in 2004, what children?

      • Eva says:

He was maybe talking future children, joking around?

      • Esmom says:

@Eva, that’s how I took it. I don’t have the timelines down pat but Brad’s comment seemed general and jokey, as in everything’s fair game except for children.

      • Diana says:

Actually, I think he got his stories confused. When Ellen was moved across the street from Clooney’s office, she was doing all sorts of things to get him to go to the show and once, she asked Brad what would get his attention and Brad said to send him Chippendales. So when he finally went to Ellen, he told her that when he confronted Brad about it he told him ‘just don’t harm the children’

    • RR says:

Reddit is not social media. If you had ever visited the site, you would know this. It has MUCH more in common with Celebitchy than say, Facebook. Would you consider this site ‘social media’?

      • Dubois says:

It’s a media venue where people interract, so yes I would consider it social media. It’s not personalized in the way that Facebook and Intsagram are – people don’t go to Reddit to interract with their besties – and George used it for Q&A in seemingly professional manner and also to soclicit funds for a worthy cause. But it is indeed a type of social media.

    • Gabby says:

I heard about another prank George pulled on a friend that went for about 3 years, so Pitt was pretty sure the payback wouldn’t be instant. I don’t think he was referring to the Jolie-Pitt clan, but just his future children, whoever the mother would be,

  2. eliza says:

He seriously bores me and so do about 90% of his movies. There, I said it.

  3. Diana says:

    Funny old man.I like you, you’re fine….

  4. HadleyB says:

Is anyone else sick of his “charm and humour?” It’s so old, forced, and same told tired schtick.

Like Sofia’s Vergara’s fake over the top accent. Sick of it.

  5. jinni says:

I know I’m supposed to find him charming, but he’s just so obnoxious to me. Plus can he get through an interview without name dropping everyone. We get George you’re super popular and only hang out with the cream of the crop. Geez.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Still love him. Wish he’d date someone his own age, but still love him.

  7. Neffie says:

LMAO was that shade to Justin Bieber?

  8. Hannah says:

I really like him but he does tell the same stories over and over again.

  9. lucy2 says:

I think he’s naturally a witty, charming guy. And I like how he and Sandra have been friends for so long. 6 movies with Matt?! Wow. I guess they do like each other!

As for the social media thing, I don’t consider 1 AMA session the same as someone who is on twitter, constantly posting stuff about their life and commenting on everything, and I think that’s what he was talking about.

    • ncmagnolia says:

I agree. I think the people here who’ve made scathing comments such as ‘boring’ and ‘old man’ might be in the under 25 set. I can understand that. As someone who hasn’t seen her twenties in quite a while, I still find him charming, self-deprecating and sexy. Do wish he’d date chicks Sandy’s age, though. Great AMA, George 😉

  10. JojoAnn says:

I’m sorry but Cumbys IAMA was ok, not something to be gushing about months later and certainly not something I have ever seen redditors reference as legend in anyway. It was forgettable iz what I’m saying.

  11. serena says:

God, I love reading his interviews, they’re so interesting! I laughed a lot on Brad’s joke.. I wanna know all of the ‘rotten things he’s done’. I bet they have lots of fun together, lol.

  12. Greata says:

I don’t hate George Clooney, BUT he is not the greatest actor , and I have yet to see a movie in which he is not playing George Clooney, playing George Clooney. Overrated…

    • Arlene says:

He was terrific in O Brother where art thou, and in The Decendants and Intolerable Cruelty. The teeth obsession alone, and the office scenes with Herb were just laugh out loud brilliant. I don’t think he has ever described himself as the greatest actor, but he seems to know what he can and can’t do.

      • HadleyB says:

True ! He is like the Jen Anniston in male form — they usually can only act as themselves. Maybe a role here and there are they different but mostly — they are themselves.

But I find this a lot lately in actors. I think Leo, Meryl, Cate and Kate are the only ones ( probably missing a few) that can ACT as a character.

But that is a problem within Hollywood — too much nepotism and couch casting has lead to this plethora of unskilled actors we have to see in movie after movie.

      • Jaded says:

Adored The Descendants. Having been through pulling a family member off life support for similar reasons, he did it with a tremendous amount of feeling, confusion, hurt, hate and compassion. For that he gets my 2 thumbs up.

  13. Dizzle says:

Pshhh, his best work was on Roseanne.

  14. Emma - the JP Lover says:

(Blinks) Six films with Matt Damon? Well, there is:

    “Ocean’s Eleven”
    “Ocean’s Twelve”
    “Syriana”
    “Ocean’s Thirteen”
    “The Monuments Men” (02/07/2014)

Can someone please give me the title of the sixth Clooney/Damon film? Thanks! 🙂

  15. Lipsy says:

I’m dying laughing at work, trying not to spill my tea over my keyboard. Sandy drinks too much, I was the first Batman with nipples, etc. He’s such a delight to read!!!

  16. holly hobby says:

I question his girlfriend choices and how he can’t manage to have a long term relationship with anyone but I can’t hate George C after reading his comments. The man sounds like someone you would enjoy hanging out at a bar with -really! I laughed out loud a couple of times while I was reading the condensed version.

  17. Lucy says:

Really liked this interview. And honestly, who doesn’t love Matt?!
