Emma Watson complains about ‘Noah’ director Darren Aronofsky & water bottles

emma1

Emma Watson covers & guest-edits the February/March issue of Wonderland. While I’m not crazy about the editorial overall, I do like the cover and I do like that Emma is changing it up with her editorials. Her long hair looks great too. She looks very “English rose” in the cover shot. Anyway, I keep forgetting that Emma had a role in that epic Noah film, which hasn’t come out yet. Noah was directed by Darren Aronofsky, and stars Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. The film’s production was reportedly something of a disaster – a bloated budget, lots of delays and weather issues and no one is convinced that the film will end up being worth all of the problems. In her Wonderland interview, Emma complains about Aronofsky and the situation with water on set:

Harry Potter star Emma Watson fell ill on the set of Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic Noah after the director refused to allow bottled water on set, it has been revealed.

Watson, who plays Noah’s adopted daughter Ila in the big budget fantasy, said the Black Swan director banned plastic bottles in an effort to echo the film’s environmental concerns. But with some shoots taking place from 4am, the actor often found herself “tired and delirious” on set and in need of rehydration. On one occasion Watson was so thirsty that she accidentally drank a mug of stagnant water.

“Because of the storm, Douglas [Booth] and I ended up shooting most of our scenes between 4am and 7am – and at that time I never function well,” Watson told Wonderland magazine. “Because the film has a pro-environment message, Darren didn’t want anyone drinking from plastic water bottles on set either. So that made things slightly harder.

“Everything we used had to be recycled or recyclable. Having no water bottles on set at five in the morning, when you’re exhausted and delirious, wasn’t ideal. I was so tired one morning I picked up a mug from my trailer and drank some stagnant water that had been there for the duration – so three months. I was so ill.”

The actor was then shocked when the Black Swan film-maker told her to “use” her illness in a scene. “I came in the next day and was like: ‘Darren, I don’t think I can do this, I’m really sick,'” she said. “He was like: ‘Use it for the scene.’ And I turned round to the bus and was like: ‘Is he joking? He is joking right?’ and there was deadly silence.”

Watson pointed out that even veteran British hard-man actor Ray Winstone, who plays Noah’s nemesis Tubal-Cain, struggled with the filming conditions. “We started filming in the summer in New York. It was so hot that Ray Winstone at one point, who wore a beard and heavy make-up, nearly fell down a flight of stairs,” she said. “His make-up was literally melting off his face.”

Watson’s revelations are just the latest controversies to hit Noah. The $130m film has been plagued by reports that executives at studio Paramount cut up to six alternative versions following negative reactions from test screenings for US religious audiences. Aronofsky said last week that he had won a torrid battle to ensure his own cut is one filmgoers will see in cinemas.

[From The Guardian]

I use a plastic water bottle nearly every day. But here’s the thing – I just use one and refill constantly with filtered water, for weeks at a time. I have questions as to why – if Aronofsky really did ban plastic water bottles on-set – why wasn’t there a water filter in every trailer? And why was one glass of water just sitting in Emma’s trailer for three months with no one throwing it out or cleaning the glass or something? Now, all of that being said, I’ve heard that Aronofsky can be a major task-master and some actors really don’t like his directing style at all. I also believe that this film is going to be a hot mess. Here’s the trailer:

Kaiser – using the same plastic bottle all the time isn’t ideal either, they say it can hold germs. I do the same but usually after a week I get rid of it 🙂

    • Migdalia says:

+1000 I used to do that as well until I learned it’s a very unhealthy thing to do. My question is if you’re going to ban plastic bottles on set why not provide aluminum bottles and water dispensers.

    • lucy2 says:

Yes – get a proper reusable and washable one, reusing the plastic is not good.

      • Tiffany :) says:

That’s the thing. There are tons of reusable bottles out there. I find it hard to believe that they didn’t have water for the actors on set.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Yeah, this. Get a friggin Nalgene, people. Get an aluminum bottle, whatever. Fill it with filtered water.

Think of it this way: there is ONE guy at each bottled water company to make sure the water is actually clean. There are no guys who make sure the bottles are sterilized, so by the time they get to you they can be filthy, even unopened. There are currently no laws against this. Not to mention that there is a ton of estrogen and BPA’s in that bottled water.

At every local public water facility there is at least one person to make sure the water’s clean, and usually a team of them who make sure the water’s clean. If your local water doesn’t taste good, it is still worth it to invest in a better filter (than Brita).

      • FLORC says:

        Nerd Alert
A summer high school job for me was making the bottles for Poland Springs.
They take a small cap of plastic with the screw cap grooves already set and hold it to an air nozzle with clamps that shape the bottle from the outside. It was an incredibly sterile environment. HasMat style body and glove suit with a full cap so no exposed hair. Machines were cleaned ever 8 hours and dried properly.

The big joke was it’s just tap water, and it was, but it was still clean and tested every 5,000 bottles for quality. And that’s a lot more than most companies did.

I just have a nalgene now and randoms you get at races for protein mixes. Can’t bring myself to toss those bottles.

      • Nerd Alert says:

That’s encouraging, FLORC. At least I know which bottled water to use if I have to. The information I read did not include Poland Springs. The paper and documentary discussed Dasani, Aquafina, Evian, and Arrowhead. Totally my error in speaking for the industry, but there is no law against the current less sanitary methods of larger bottlers. They were all self-regulated.

Did they purify the water and clean or change the hoses that brought it to the bottler? The data suggested that bacteria was actually in the water before adding to the bottle in the case of Evian, whose bottles were more sterile than the others, though not as sterile as what you describe (contaminants came from workers not properly wearing PPE or washing before putting it on).

    • MrsB says:

Plus all the chemicals that leach into the water from the plastic.
I agree @migdalia it seems silly there were no aluminum bottles provided. I also don’t understand if it was such a problem for Emma, why she didn’t just go get her own somehow?

    • i says:

Firstly: Emma Watson is not a child actor anymore. If she’s incapable of setting boundaries for herself, getting water for herself, etc. then she’s in real trouble in the film industry. The Production Assistants should be held responsible for the 3 month old water in her trailer not the Director.

Secondly: The story of Noah has an environmental message?….

Thirdly: As unappealing as this movie looks to me I can see that the religious community is going to eat this up. It’s probably going to do as well as Mel Gibson’s Passion of the….
I’m not saying that I want it to do as well or that Gibson’s film wasn’t disgusting. I just see the potential for it to do well with the religious set.
P.S. I’ve got a long standing crush on both Connelly and Crowe so I wouldn’t mind seeing it even if I find the subject matter ridiculous and it looks overproduced (to say the least).

      • Zadie says:

Why was the Passion disgusting? I watched it a long time ago so I don’t really remember.

      • FLORC says:

        i
I also was no fan of the passion. Also, bad first date movie!

I am a huge Watson fan and I don’t think setting boundaries is as black and white as you claim.

      • i says:

Just to clarify: The anti-Semitic backlash from Passion of the Gibson is what I found disgusting. Gibson made his personal feelings regarding Jews abundantly clear via his mania, (just look the issue up).

    • MCraw says:

Idk what she’s talking about. I worked on the stunt unit for this set in Long Island. We had water. At the (awesome) crafty table and catering tent there were water coolers where we filled sports bottles production gave us or recycleable cups if we lost track of our bottles. It was a waste-conscious set, which was refreshing because movie sets are SO SO wasteful in every way, from leaving engines on for over 12 hrs to food and plastic waste. She’s a brat. A pretty brat.

      • marcy says:

Wow, she’s really dumb and overrated! The dumb, ugly girl could have gotten rid of her own stale water instead of complaining about it, she expects everything to be handed to her. She can’t even act. People have complained from the Harry Potter set (I know people who worked on it) that she was very inconsiderate on the set and rude. She can’t even act and owes all her success to Harry Potter, which she ruined. She’s a complete fake but most people don’t even know about it. She’s always contradicting herself and trying to make herself seem holier-than-though. Dumb, unattractive girl, the director is trying to be eco-friendly and the dumb girl can’t get herself water or buy an aluminum bottle? Check this out..http://meettherealemmawatson.blogspot.com

      • 'p'enny says:

        @Marcy

        okaaay… bit mean

whatever her problems are with the water-bottle situation, she isn’t dumb [x4 mentions] and i wouldn’t say no to her looks.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Marcy, she may be spoiled and rude but she is hardly unattractive and Brown University does not except dumb people.

      • Lou says:

Wow, Marcy, you’ve got some anger issues to sort. Is that your website? Because it’s creepy.

Maybe if you hate her, just avoid her? It’ll probably be better for your health.

    • JPX says:

That’s jus ridiculous. A glass of water would evaporate in 3 months. Emma sounds like a Diva. I’m sure tap water was readily available.

    • annieanne says:

So if access to fresh water was such an issue, why couldn’t Emma have bought herself a Cleanbottle (or even TWO; I bet she could afford them), filled it at her hotel and brought it with her to the set?
Emma has never struck me as such a prima donna that this would be an issue for her. I suspect there’s something that didn’t make it into the article.

      • Sue says:

She was guest editing! I doubt they left anything out. This isn’t the first time Emma has whined about something.

  2. 'p'enny says:

why didn’t she invest in a metal water container? the ones that attach to belts and bags which can keep water cool? Available in all good walking/camping shops.

    • minime says:

🙂 I’m always carrying mine, even to the office. Funny it was also my first thought. It’s such a basic thing…

    • Åsa says:

That’s what I was thinking! Well, that and why on earth didn’t she or anyone else get rid of that old water? Why would you just let that stand there for months?

Also, I didn’t really have an opinion of her either way, but this is making me think she’s a whiner and a spoiled little girl.
Her acting, from what I’ve seen, is mediocre at best and she’s not a box office draw. She should appreciate every chance she gets, soon the Harry Pottershine will wear off. Now she’s whining about a movie at just the start of it’s press tour? That gives a professional image…

      • Kimbob says:

Yeah, my thoughts also. I read this as “waa-waa-wah.” Not impressed. I give kudos to Aronofsky for taking this stance on the water bottles on set. It’s kind of hard to believe that no concessions were made (not having drinking water readily available…just not in the plastic water bottles)…and the story about the months old water she drank…it doesn’t sound right or ring true.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Yeah, this along with the reports from the This Is The End set really make me dislike her.

Why didn’t she bring a metal bottle? A Brita pitcher? I can’t see how this is on anyone but Emma–his rep for taking himself too seriously is known, and he owns up to it. Plus…WHY can’t she throw out her old water? Christ on sale that makes her seem so fcking useless!

      • lunchcoma says:

I had a fairly positive impression of her before, but I agree this makes her sound petty and spoiled. There were all kinds of ways she could have solved this problem. I’m getting the feeling she has a brand of bottled water she likes and is pouting about not being able to have it.

The story about drinking something sitting out for three months is also clearly untrue. It would have evaporated by then!

  3. Size Does Matter says:

She is lovely, but the inability to supply herself with water is a more than a little silly. I hate plastic water bottles, too. My kids will want a drink of water at home, and, instead of getting a glass from the cabinet and filling it from the dispenser in the fridge, they’ll go get a plastic bottle from the garage. Drives me nuts.

    • Erinn says:

I’m guilty for reusing my plastic water bottles. For no reason other than I forgot to buy a new aluminum one, and I never think of getting one when I’m out shopping.

    • Wiffie says:

If you didn’t have plastic bottles of water in the garage, they’d probably go for the filtered in a glass. if you hate them, stop buying them. This seems as simple as Emma bringing her own to set. ??

  4. AmandaPanda says:

Sorry, but “Noah” was hit by “weather issues”?

    Who would have predicted that?

    *snigger*

    • TrustMOnThis says:

LOLOL! This looks like blatant pandering to the Christians. Pass.
I think I’m through with Aronofsky.

  5. Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

Has she never heard of a reusable water bottle? I’m sure she can afford to buy one.

  6. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

This movie looks like a piece of sh-t. Literally.

I was about to tell Emma to shut it up, because girlfriend should be on her knees, praying to the goddess that is JK Rowling for writing HP, because girlfriend wouldn’t have a career or get half the attention she does now, if it was for Rowling…..she can’t act.

But in this, she was right. I think, anyway. We don’t need another Kubrick on our hands (at least he made good movies while terrorizing his actors–The Shining, anyone?)

    • Latisse says:

So happy you said that. I like her as a person but she is a really, really, comically bad actress. Like there are some scenes in the HP movies where I was actually laughing, her acting was so bad.

Also I wish that Brown education would kick in right about now as I thought she was smarter than to publicly complain about a big name director.

      • Louminary says:

Oh thank goodness for all the agreement on her “talent”. Girl cannot act her way out of a paper bag.

Can no one in the industry see that?! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here!!

      • jules says:

Oh, but there are people who genuinely think she deserves an Oscar. But they’re her fans, so no surprise there. I do think people in the industry know that she’s a bad actress. Her roles after Potter are small and quite forgettable, to be honest. If she were deemed talented, she would get better offers, for sure.

  7. Jackson says:

Her comments don’t really strike me as ‘complaining.’ I saw the longer trailer in the theater and I thought hmmm, I may like this movie. When I saw a much shorter trailer on TV it looked like a jumbly, dis-jointed, hot mess.

  8. K says:

Toxins leach from plastic into your beverages. The discarded plastic, if not recycled, can make its way into the food chain in the form of tiny plastic beads. Recycling itself is not a “clean process,’ which is why re-usable, safe materials like stainless steel are promoted.

The director and producers should have made sure there were safe conditions, including ample drinking water, on set. You do not need to use plastic to do this. He could have rented clean kegs and filled them with filtered water, for instance. And Emma has enough money… she could have ordered something like that for her own needs.

    • Lisa says:

Exactly. I am anti-plastic bottles, too, for the reasons you listed, but I have a stainless steel bottle that I fill with filtered water and take everywhere I go. These kinds of things are not rocket science to figure out and implement!

    • Nerd Alert says:

Plus, they aren’t forced to ensure their plastic bottles are sanitized. Even Ziplock baggies have to be sterile to pass inspections but water bottles don’t.

  9. Ice Maiden says:

“Because of the storm, Douglas [Booth] and I ended up shooting most of our scenes between 4am and 7am – and at that time I never function well,” Watson told Wonderland magazine.”

    Stop it Emma, please.

    You’re breaking my heart.

    • AG-UK says:

I know. Well honey I would gladly trade her 4-7 as that’s when I was up today for my 9-5 with far less perks/pay any old day. She didn’t think that thought through all that education and I wonder how they manage to cross the roads/ get from point a to b??

      • MisJes says:

Haha I am with you, AG-UK! I’ll take her 3 hours of filming and give her my 12 hour, 9pm to 9am shift in my overcrowded, under-staffed Emergency Department (nurse here). I’m the same age as Emma, so I don’t think this is an age issue. This whiny, ungrateful snot has no idea what hard work actually is.

    • Val says:

Most people work way longer hours, in worse conditions, for tiny pay, and celebrities whine about how hard it is filming and doing press/interviews and award shows… seriously, boo-hoo. Suck it up, 90% of humanity should be so lucky.

  10. Nikkie says:

Since when are plastic bottles not considered recyclable? If all plastic is banned you can get multiple reusable big water bottles kept in a fridge in your trailer. Your assistant can go refill them at a supermarket with fresh cold water any time. I mean they were filming in a major city in 2013 not actual biblical times. I like Emma Watson but this complaint sounds bratty and unprofessional. Something else must have gone down with the cast and director that they are pissed at him for.

  11. Abbicci says:

I thought Emma was supposed to be a clever girl. If she isn’t smart enough to figure out how to buy metal water bottles and fill them up everyday she is going to find the world a really hard place. Seriously, she doesn’t have an assistant who is smart enough to figure out how to use a tap?

I don’t think she’s complaining about the director but revealing what an idiot she is.

    • Ice Maiden says:

I reckon she’s the British Natalie Portman – no charisma, no talent, no sex appeal, and not half as intelligent as she’d like to think she is.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I think she’s hyped up because she played Hermione, and did play that up in her interviews. I think she’s fairly intelligent, but not as smart as she thinks she is. And God, she has no talent. If I were her, I’d be on my back, in bed, eating chocolate truffles, drinking coke, and reading romance novels all day. Heck, my mom would probably be on the other side of the bed with me!

      • MisJes says:

+1, Ice Maiden, that is a completely spot-on comparison!

      • Lisa says:

        Agreed, Ice Maiden, 100%

      • Ice Maiden says:

I think both actresses were lucky in that they landed plum roles very early in life, which set them up nicely for a future career, even though both are mediocre actresses – at best. They both also cultivate a slightly aloof, slightly superior attitude which – they hope – gives them an aura of intelligence and sophistication. This does seem to fool some people, but you only need to read an interview with either Portman or Watson to realise that they are two very privileged young women surrounded by people who have convinced them to believe their own hype.

      • Lou says:

Well said, Ice Maiden. I like Emma, but she’s only an average actress, and she needs to get over herself a bit.

      • jules says:

Really? I think she is the UK version of Jen Aniston. Nat Portman can at least act, even though I agree she’s a bit over-rated.

    • Evyn says:

Ditto. Did she drop out of Brown, or did she flunk out?

      • M.A.F. says:

I believe she said she was going to put the rest of her education on hold for awhile to make movies, sort of strike-while-the-iron is hot kind of thing. She might only have 2 years left.

      • Lou says:

Smart move, to be honest. College will always be there later.

  12. minime says:

The trailer doesn’t convince me but Jennifer Connelly does. I try to watch all of her movies. They might not be all good but she’s such a great actress that it’s worth it.

Emma looks really nice in the photo shoot, but a bit over photoshoped (but well, what to expect from these magazines? no sense of how ridiculous it is)

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I love, love, love Jennifer Connolly….she is probably one of the most beautiful and talented actresses I have ever seen. What I love the most about her is that if you just looked at her, you would think that she is a classic beauty, but wouldn’t really stand out–but she does.

      • minime says:

I totally agree Virgilia!! She is a timeless beauty and extremely talented. I wish we could see more high quality roles being given to her.

    • glaugh says:

I love Jennifer Connelly. She is the best part of every movie she does.

Requiem for a Dream, A Beautiful Mind, Labyrinth, Little Children, Blood Diamond are my fave movies of hers. She was also great in Dark Water.

  13. Patricia says:

I don’t understand this story at all. I use a refillable hard plastic water bottle at home and when I’m out. After the first day that she realized the situation I don’t see why she couldn’t show up with her own Eco friendly bottles of water. I don’t have a problems with the director saying no to disposable plastic water bottles. The way people use and dispose of those things is careless and stupid.
I also don’t get why she would have had stagnant water in her trailer for months.
Emma, I love you, but I think you’re talking crap here. Handle your own water and handle your crap. I mean, what was the paycheck at the end?! I wouldn’t be complaining.

  14. daisy says:

Has she learned nothing from Megan Fox? Don’t smack talk your director. Aranofsky seems really difficult. Black Swan was a hot mess. Noah will either be totally fabulous or an epic failure.

  15. stellalovejoydiver says:

is she aware that are glass water bottles as well? I usually like her but she sounds like an entitled idiot here

  16. Eleonor says:

I don’t know what they did on the cover, but it doesn’t look like Emma Watson.
And the blue dress seems too big for her.

  17. lucy2 says:

She had a trailer…but no access to clean water? While they filmed a $100+ movie in NY state? Please. This makes her sound incredibly whiny and childish.
I’ve heard of a number of sets banning plastic water bottles, I don’t think it’s some rare hardship, and it’s probably a good idea, environmentally. If after 1 day of discovering other water wasn’t provided, I would make sure I came prepared. Is she utterly helpless?

  18. Marty says:

Aren’t there filtered water bottles too? Couldn’t she have used that if she couldn’t use plastic bottles of water? I’m not saying filming wasn’t difficult, but her story isn’t really making a lot of sense to me.

  19. BendyWindy says:

Why on earth didn’t this extremely wealthy young lady just use a stainless steel water bottle? She could have had several. Problem solved.

  20. lewissrl says:

I know several people who worked on this film. Emma was lucky. Several extras ended up in the hospital (one with pneumonia) and a SAG rep had to halt filming a few times. This production was a mess.

  21. Pandy says:

Waaaah! Delirious due to lack of bottled water and forced to shoot scenes for 3 hours in the morning! Call the cops – Aronofsky should be arrested for ABUSE!! What a fool this girl is. And please – no one cleaned poor baby’s trailer for 3 months so she was forced to not turn on a tap, but pick up stagnant water?? Waaaaahhh!!!!

  22. Miss Jupitero says:

What is so difficult about buying a proper reusable bottle from EMS, and filling it from the tap? I’ve worked in a number of settings where bottled water is not available, but this always means the commercially bottled water where you throw away the bottle.

Sorry, she sounds do unprofessional in this interview.

  23. Kelly says:

“I just use one and refill constantly with filtered water, for weeks at a time.”
This. I’ve been doing it for years and have never gotten sick. Miss Watson sounds like a pain in the ass. Even if the story is true – you’re being paid millions of dollars, I’m sure you can make some minor sacrifices as going without water for a few hours, poor baby.
I’d go thirsty all day if it meant I’d get a six figure paycheck for a couple of weeks work.

  24. glaugh says:

Ummm here’s an idea Emma – just get one of those metal or reusable plastic water bottles (not the regular kind – the type you find at Costco) Get a few and fill them up before going in to set every day?

Good god, she sounds “difficult” and not very down to earth at all. Didnt she also freak out onset of “This is the End” or am I imagining that?

  25. ds says:

Anyone knows designer ID of the dress in the last photo?

  26. ... says:

What she said was taken out of context. I read the whole interview and I don’t think she was complaining. She was just answering the question. Other than that she had nothing but praise for Darren, the film and the production. She also did an interview with Darren for Wonderland, and she really seems to admire him. Plus Douglas Booth revealed that Emma and Darren are friends.

  27. Algernon says:

    Sport…bottle? Re-usable sport bottle? No?

  28. Whitney says:

Will probably see this movie, but only because of Jennifer Connelly. She’s such an awesome actress and almost criminally underrated.

  29. fd says:

Is she 2? Does she have no income? Get a reusable bottle and stop whining.

  30. eliza says:

Oh boo hoo! I am a little skeptical at her stagnant water story. How did she know it sat there for three months?

Also, cry me a river over working with a talented director, getting paid and having to work at hortible hours. Hello! It’s called being an acting professional. If she is so delicate perhaps a different career is more for her.

I am also curious, is she too good to use a thermos? A resuable water bottle? WTF?

  31. lisa2 says:

This interview is yet another example of how uninteresting some celebrities are. When the meat of your interview is about water bottles; you need to show something else about yourself to get the public interested.

  32. SnarkGirl says:

Anyone else wondering why a movie set in the middle east has a fair “English rose” in it? Or a blatantly Caucasian guy as Noah?

Funding for this movie must have come from Fox News.

  33. Penny says:

So you buy a big re-usable drink bottle on the first day of shooting and fill it up at home. Sorted.

Why did she leave a mug of water in her trailer for three months?

  34. MSat says:

The way most movie sets work, actors aren’t really allowed to get things for themselves – they can’t move set pieces, they can’t do their own hair or makeup or have their own food brought in. Union workers are supposed to do that. It’s typically built into all big studio production contracts. Actors couldn’t even bring their own water if they wanted to.

    • skeptical says:

that’s what i was wondering. are actors even allowed to bring their own stuff? if an actor’s item goes missing on set, the production could be held liable, right? So to avoid that they just have blanket rules that you don’t bring anything of your own.
So yes it would be on production to get water to their actors.
And someone higher up did comment that Emma was lucky. Lewissrl above said someone got pneumonia on set and a SAG rep halted filming several times. There’s more to this story than a whiny girl.

    • Suki2 says:

Actors can’t move set pieces but Emma would certainly have PAs and personal assistants at her disposal to get her pretty much anything she wanted. And believe me no one would prevent Emma Waston from bringing her own water or food to set. Guessing it would simply never occur to her to provide for herself. Movie stars are infantilized and at a certain point they just become permanent fussy babies.

I tried getting through Pi yesterday, I just couldn’t. I had to stop it not even half way through. I didn’t realize that in my Netflix queue I had an Aronofsky block. Which was a shame because I liked Requiem. Won’t be seeing this movie any time soon.

She is so annoying and she always lies. She can’t act. Who would want to watch her movies? She won’t be in Hollywood much longer. Talentless ugly man. And she really needs some lip injections
