Anthony Mackie loves dumpster diving, redid his house with reclaimed garbage

Captain America The Winter Soldier UK Premiere
For all the hoopla over Chris Evans and his reluctant rise to superherodom, there’s Anthony Mackie, playing second fiddle when he should be the star. Mackie stars as Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I hope this is just one role of many for him in lucrative franchises. Mackie was on Ellen yesterday, where he turned on the charm and told some highly entertaining stories. I was so impressed by his enthusiasm and how genuine he seemed, but of course I’ve loved him for years.

On Ellen, Mackie talked about how he found his home in New Orleans, an 1865 Victorian bed and breakfast which he broke into to see, and promptly fell through the floor. Mackie does his own refurbishing, and he also loves to use reclaimed garbage in his home. I would dumpster dive with him any day.

On how he found his home
I was hanging out with some friends and we drove past this house and it had been vacant for two years. One of my best friends from from middle school is a real estate agent now so we get in, doing our due diligence, and we go upstairs to the third floor and I’m like ‘this is amazing,’ and I fall from the third floor all the way to the basement. And I look up and I’m covered in termites, and I look at my friend on the third floor and I said ‘this is my house.’ And I’ve gutted it and made it into my house.

Ellen jokes that he sued them
Technically we broke in so I couldn’t sue, but they gave me a really good price.

On dumpster diving
If you haven’t dumpster dived, you haven’t lived… you drive by, you see a dumpster. Circle back, make sure nobody’s looking. Go home, chill out, nighttime comes, you go back to that dumpster just look around, see what you find. One man’s trash, another man’s renovation.

You can always make something out of trash. All of my floors, I got out of a dumpster. My entire bar, I built with wood that I got out of a dumpster from a broadway show. My bathtub in my little guest situation, I got it out of a dumpster. It’s a really nice tub. [shows pictures]

On how he got his tub out of the dumpster
I went to home depot, got some guys [uses air quotes], got my truck and was like ‘who want to make $50?’ Took em to the dumpster, there’s a latch on the dumpster where you can swing it open… put it on the trailer, you’ve got to move fast.

[From The Ellen show, aired April 2, 2014]

Later, Mackie joked that he was in the best shape of his life for the movie and that he tried to get producers to let him wear spandex, but that they shot him down.

I was working out for five months to do this movie, and I looked in the mirror and I looked like I did when I was 18. I impressed myself. So I get on the phone with the Marvel exec and I was like ‘yo, I got it – spandex. In the comic book he wears spandex…’ No spandex, they said no, they shot it down.” After that Ellen gifted Mackie with a spandex onesie that said “watch Ellen” along with a pith helmet with a light on it for dumpster diving.

How awesome is Mackie? I’ve never been into dumpster diving and I’m not particularly crafty, but he’s inspiring me to thrift shop for some furniture at least. I’ll agree that he should wear spandex in the next movie and I’ll definitely get behind that cause. I’d like to advocate for him to have much more screen time. I just may see Captain America 2 after all.

Update 2: Thanks to Ellen’s staff for sending us these great pics of Mackie on the show!

What a charming guy! I don’t dumpster dive, but I love thrift stores and always find bargains.

    • Ripley says:

Charming is the perfect word for him! I can’t imagine dumpster diving, but only because I can’t even handle TJ Maxx. Gives me hives having to rummage.

  2. Allie says:

    Well hellllllooooooo Anthony Mackie

    • mimif says:

      I know, right? So fine.
Stupid Marvel, we want the Spandex!

    • jaye says:

He is as beautiful as the highest quality, most beautiful hunk of smooth, creamy, delicious chocolate. Better than the best chocolate out of Belgium. Melt in your mouth delicious. Damm…now I want chocolate.

    • Rachel says:

Word. I never really knew much about him before. But now I’m a convert.

I also feel the need to go checking out dumpsters now.

  3. QQ says:

Im a thrift store person and also dumpster dived A LOT when we first came to the U.S so like.. I have to love him

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Love him for it, too, and we don’t have dumpsters (burbs) but people sit stuff out for the trash and I have been known to adopt it. Bookcases. Little bathroom shelf. A broken lamp. Gonna fix it up as soon as I become an electrician. Ok so some of it was actual trash. It was FREE dammit!

      • jaye says:

I “adopted” two orphan tv stands. One of them was really gorgeous and sturdy. It just needed a good cleaning. I’ve had it for 14 years now. It’s really well made. I can’t believe any one would throw it away. The second one just saved me from having to go out and buy a cheap one. It didn’t fair as well. It was in my then 5 year old son’s room. Jr is hard on furniture. He’s off to college soon and my living room furniture will probably throw a rager knowing that they’ll get a 4 year break from his hopping and flopping ass.

In New England where I grew up, there is a long tradition of setting out your good-enough trash on the strip of grass next to the street, close to but not right where the trash is picked up.

When I was a student I furnished most of my apartments with other people’s trash – oriental carpet, bureaus, little tables, an easy chair. Nowadays with the bedbug issue it is more complex, but trash-picking is fantastic. A friend of mine once found a working Olympus 35mm camera in the trash! It is amazing what some people throw away.

  4. aims says:

My family and I are huge goodwill addicts. We look for something with bones and redo it. As long as it’s sturdy and interesting looking, you can so something pretty cool.

  5. Kim1 says:

I haven’t actually dumpster dived but I was visiting a condominium complex and I saw a lamp and TV next to a dumpster.I loaded them in my car .Both of them worked.Since then I have retrieved about twenty things from next to that dumpster like rugs, dishes, small appliances, etc.

  6. AlmondJoy says:

I love him! I helped my close friend get a whole dining room set that was sitting in front of the dumpster at an apartment complex. It looked brand new. People throw away some awesome pieces!

  7. GeeMoney says:

He’s pretty awesome. Can’t wait to see him on screen this weekend.

  8. Anne de Vries says:

He’s fun. Is there a video of his Ellen interview? (something I can watch from Europe?)

  9. Lindsey Gregory says:

I LOVE dumpster diving. I get it from my momma. Rare to find ppl who will admit to it, let alone profess their love for it <3

    • jaye says:

I don’t do it often, but if I see that someone has set some small pieces of furniture out, I’ll check out it’s condition. I love goodwill, hard & estate sales. You can find a lot of diamonds in the rough.

  10. Ag says:

Love it. And he’s hot. (I love thrift stores and consignment shops, but my mom is huge on dumpster diving for awesome pieces.)

  11. We Are All Made of Stars says:

He sounds like a cool guy! The awesomest and most original people know how to take interesting vintage pieces and make them their own.

  12. lucy2 says:

His house sounds awesome, I love stuff like that, but he’s really lucky he didn’t get hurt!
Trash picking is practically a sport around here. And in my neighborhood if you want to get rid of anything, put it at the curb and it’s usually gone by the end of the day unless it’s gross. I don’t go in dumpsters, but I’ve gotten a few things off the curb and I love going through thrift and antique shops. I got a 1920s Victrola and cabinet at the Habitat for Humanity shop a while back, super cheap, plus it’s for a good cause.

  13. Annaloo. says:

I was crew on a film that he was cast in, he really is very down to earth, polite and he’s also type of person who says hi to everyone. Love him.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Yay! Love to hear things like that, especially about men that are super hot!

    • sarah says:

Nice! I was loving him after reading the post and I’d hoped I wouldn’t scroll down to find out he’s terrible.

  14. Tiffany :) says:

    What timing for this story!
This morning, as our dumpster sat curbside for pick up by the garbage truck, I saw a man standing knee deep, going through all of our trash. If he was just going to recycle, fine. I worry about people getting information to use for identity theft though. I don’t know if I should tell my apartment manager. It seemed like the guy knew when it would be out, because he was there seconds after it was placed curbside.

  15. Dimebox says:

My favorite episode of Top Chef from New Orleans was when he was the guest. He seems like a genuinely great guy. My neighbor threw away an antique wicker table last year that needed lots of love. I doubt she would recognize it now, and it is one of my treasures.

    • Anna-fo-Fanna says:

He was great on Top Chef! What a warm and personable guy; that ep definitely solidified my love for him. 🙂

  16. Mingy says:

    mmm damn what a hottie!

  17. Sea Dragon says:

He could be Will Smith’s little brother.

  18. Gwen says:

He sounds like a really nice and smart person. I hope he has a long and succesful carrer 🙂

  19. Miss Jupitero says:

Dude, I’m thinking about building a house out of refurbished dumpsters. Okay, shipping containers. I like how this guy thinks. He’s my new Marvel hottie!

  20. Kali says:

He is SO GOOD in Winter Soldier. SO good. Nice to hear that he knows how to be thrifty as well (tick one point off future husband list 😄)

  21. Tiffany :) says:

I just watched the interview. Damn is he charming! I am totally hot for this guy.

  22. daniel says:

If he is dumpster diving in Beverly Hills or in an “up-scale” area, you would be amazed at what people throw away. I’ve heard rumors of people pickingup electronics, unopened or barely used, etc. Like Laptops and whatnot!
