Emma Roberts on James Franco’s Instagram scandal: ‘It’s irrelevant’

Emma Roberts

These are photos of Emma Roberts wearing a Chloe dress at a New Yorkers for Children event last week. I haven’t talked yet about her new blonde bob, which looks really good. What doesn’t look good? Emma disregarding James Franco’s Instagram antics.

I don’t expect this Emma story to gain as much traction as one about the defenders of Woody Allen. Emma seems to inspire boredom in comment threads. People were alarmed when she was arrested for domestic violence for biting and hitting Evan Peters. They got got dramatically engaged a few months later, and no one cared. Let’s do this anyway.

James was busted a month ago by the internet for trying to pick up a 17-year-old girl on Instagram. Franco “apologized” for his antics by admitting, “I used bad judgment.” His explanation was that it was super hard to meet people because he’s so famous. There was nothing in his apology about the creep factor of a 36-year-old man hitting on a teenager. Some people thought the whole thing was a publicity stunt for Palo Alto (he plays a coach that beds a high school student). I think he was trying to score and knew people would believe it was a stunt.

Emma Roberts is now promoting her role in Palo Alto as the teenager seduced by Franco. She says that Instagram stuff meant nothing at all and is completely “irrelevant” to her:

After James Franco’s Instagram conversation with a 17-year-old went viral, rumors swirled that the whole thing was a publicity stunt to promote Franco’s new film “Palo Alto,” which is screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.

When Franco’s co-star Emma Roberts and director Gia Coppola joined HuffPost Live’s Josh Zepps to discuss “Palo Alto,” neither woman was keen on talking about the Instagram incident.

“I honestly didn’t read any of it. When people sent it to me, I was like, ‘I don’t want to read about this.’ It’s irrelevant,” Roberts said.

Coppola added that she has not spoken to Franco about the matter and said only that he is “such a great, giving guy.”

Roberts was more open about her relationship with Franco on film. Roberts plays a virginal high school student who develops a flirtatious relationship with her soccer coach, portrayed by Franco. Despite some critics labeling the characters’ relationship as “too creepy to be hot,” Roberts said the age difference never felt gratuitous.

“And I think also because I wasn’t really 15 or 16, I think that kind of lightened the mood with shooting those scenes. I was 21, so it wasn’t like anything bad was actually happening,” Roberts added.

[From HuffPo]

Emma could have told HuffPo that she simply didn’t want to discuss the Franco Instagram controversy. She decided to throw a little attitude in there instead. What does Emma even mean by “irrelevant“? Other than “I’m not interested and want to stick my head in the sand,” I don’t know. Emma’s previously gone off on how nepotism doesn’t exist in Hollywood, so I think she falls into denial when she doesn’t like an interview question.

You’ve probably already heard about Franco’s semi-NSFW nude paintings of Seth Rogen. Franco also has a new art exhibit out at the Pace gallery. Reviews are astoundingly bad. Vulture is convinced that George W. Bush is a better artist than Franco. The Daily Beast wonders why the art world still bothers with Franco at all. The New York Times says Franco is “embarrassingly clueless when it comes to art.” I’m surprised Franco hasn’t called the NYT critic “a little bitch” yet.

Franco is still finding time (while starring on Broadway) to post more gross, shirtless selfies to his Instagram account.

Right, because it’s no biggie when a grown man picks up on a teenager. Eyeroll

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. And by “irrelevant” she means “is inconvenient for me to think about so I’ll just pompously blow it off.” Eyes rolling so hard might get stuck in back of head.

      • Stormsmama says:

Goodnames- that is my thought too. She’s a sheltered entitled person. She is annoyed to be asked about it bc it’s inconvenient for her to address anything other than herself…
        I can NOT with her

  2. Sarah says:

I can’t believe I used to fancy him and think him interesting. His selfies are in kardashian land. He is turning into a right wanker.

    • Loopy says:

Mee too! Used to think he was hot and mysterious.

    • ParisPucker says:

      he was always a wanker..

    • Liv says:

Is he on drugs? Why is he posting these disgusting and gross pictures right after his “scandal”? Ugh! There was actually a time when I found him hot too – but that was around the time he was in Spiderman and nobody knew about his character!! He’s an example of how to ruin your public image.

    • Artemis says:

I can believe, that boy was hot during the Spiderman era! Who knew he would be such a douche?

Tip: start stanning for his brother Dave. A total cutie and he’s dating Alison Brie (she’s so funny and pretty!). Pretty sure he will age better than his slimeball brother too.

  3. Loopy says:

What does George W. Bush have to do with his work?

    • Kori says:

Bush just had an art exhibit. He’s not positioning himself as a great artist but GWB was very enthusiastic about his hobby. You know Franco takes it very seriously though and doesn’t regard his work as amateur.

    • mrspatrickbateman says:

Bush made some art awhile back and it was received well so I guess they’re saying Bush’s work was still better than Franco’s.
Is Franco’s brother as much of a jerk?

  4. tifzlan says:

This is truly the end of my Franco love, i promise it!

Also, i’ve seen the George W Bush paintings and yes, they are much better than Franco’s, lol.

    • Bush’s paintings aren’t terrible, not amazing, but not terrible.

      • aims says:

And the world is a better place because Bush is tucked away painting. Let him paint whatever he wants so that he can leave humanity alone.

      • Yes, he’s much less dangerous behind an easel.

      • tifzlan says:

The man can paint better than I can, that’s for sure! And better than Franco.

Bush looks so much like my grandfather that it’s hard for me to hate him sometimes. Although i do agree with aims and the general consensus regarding his acts as president. But i won’t deny that whenever i’m down and i need a little pick me up, i type in “Bushims” into youtube and it never fails to make me feel better about myself. They are hilarious!

      • FLORC says:

Most of what went wrong in Bush’s terms was the work of Cheney. A large amount happened in a matter of hours when Bush went in for several procedures during his term.
He was put under and power was temporarily ggiven to Cheney. This was of course planned and much got put into motion.

I give Bush a lot of slack. He took so much hate that should be directed towards president Cheney.

      • Bridget says:

@FLORC: Bush is greatly aided by the fact that he comes across as a genial guy while Cheney seems like a Voldemort cousin, but to blame all the bad stuff on Cheney is an oversimplification.

    • Isadora says:

The world would be a MUCH better place if another .. erm.. politican would have stuck to painting. I’m all for painting.

    • Adrien says:

Bush’s dog paintings are really good. I’ve been to an Elizabeth Peyton exhibit and her works remind me of Dubya’s but at least Dubya didn’t use music magazine pictures as his subjects. His dog paintings have a sad feel in them.

      • tifzlan says:

I also think his portraits resembles his subjects. Maybe it’s because i’m a terrible artist and i couldn’t draw stick figures to save my life, but i honestly think he’s a good painter given the span of time he’s painted.

  5. ray says:

    does she mean “I’m irrelevant”?

  6. nicole says:

When he is on screen, I find myself thinking, he’s kind of attractive. But every time I have to expose my eyes to his shirtless selfies in bed, I get a true gag reaction. To be fair, I am pregnant, but nonetheless, it happens.

  7. Jaded says:

    She’s an idiot.

  8. get over it says:

From the girl arrested for domestic violence. Gross, just gross

    • lisa2 says:

I think that is really why she said it. She had a scandal so she is like OH nothing here.

so pissed he is going to be in a upcoming film I want to see.

  9. kri says:

@Dee I’m sure he is angry when he has to jerk off-he is used to having teenage cheerleaders do it for him. As for Emma Roberts, I will just say after the stupidity we have seen from her thus far, I’m not surprised by her statements here.

  10. Bella says:

She is an airhead with an attitude.

  11. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Evan Peters will be at Philly “wizard world” convention. I’m open to suggestions about what I should say to him about this twit
    *evil grin*

  12. Dinah says:

Dinah SoandSo on Emma Roberts’ thoughts on James Franco’s Instagram Scandal: “It’s irrelevant”.

  13. The Original Mia says:

Emma is completely irrelevant to all of us. So there’s that…

  14. Marty says:

No, you see Emma got confused. When she said “irrelevant”, she thought someone was asking about her career.

  15. Side-Eye says:

This is the same trash that was abusing her boyfriend.

  16. Kelly says:

I think he’s trying to be funny with his selfies. I laughed.

  17. lbeees says:

FWIW, I went to Palo Alto High (not with James, but overlapped with his brother, whom I did not know).

The varsity soccer coach at the time was young and fairly attractive, but sort of stand-offish and severe. What I heard was that he slept with not one, but four(!) of the varsity soccer players at their year end party. Apparently, he had a party for them and provided alcohol, one thing led to another…

Mind you, that was the rumor, and rumor’s get elaborated upon. Looking back now, I’d say he probably slept with at least one of them, but likely not four. He was summarily dismissed from his position and never seen again.

  18. Dani says:

I “literally can’t even right now” with Franco. He’s so pervy, seems like he could be great friends with Uncle Terry (if he isn’t already).

  19. melodycalder says:

If she isn’t close to him, it probably isn’t important to her. I look at it as if someone from my old company sending me really good gossip about an old Co worker that I no longer work with and don’t have a relationship with. It wouldn’t matter to me either.

Also, what can she say? I find him disgusting, and ruin possible future jobs when she had already earned a bad rep as difficult in hollywood. OR confirm it was all a stunt. Either way… She can’t win.

  20. Emily C. says:

Franco is utterly disgusting, and a non-white or non-male would not get away with his stupidity.

I think what Emma Roberts means by “irrelevant” is “not about me.” She gives off a very narcissistic vibe.

  21. Lili says:

I guess she meant that the story is irrelevant for her work with him. To do a great job together, she can’t think of what wrongs he might have done privately (or as in this case… publicly). I don’t think she necessarily means that she doesn’t care at all about grown men picking up teenagers, or that people shouldn’t give it any attention. She’s just saying that for her work relation with him, it has no meaning. But yeah, the quote does come out in a way that’s very open for interpretation.
