Elizabeth Olsen is done with nude scenes: ‘I don’t want to be known for that’

Elizabeth Olsen

Elizabeth Olsen covers the June issue of Marie Claire UK. She also covered one of the US Marie Claire issues in May. Why so much coverage? Elizabeth is starring in this summer’s Godzilla and ramping up for her role as Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. She and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are confusing in both of these movies together. They play husband and wife in Godzilla. They play twin siblings for Marvel. This is totally a Shailene Woodley-Ansel Elgort situation. Somehow I doubt it makes much difference for two blockbusters like Godzilla and Avengers 2. Audiences have short attention spans.

Elizabeth looks lovely in this Marie Claire shoot. The stylist was fun and not fussy. Lizzie had a great time with the ’60s clothes, big hair, and pouty makeup. The best part of this shoot is that there are no open-mouthed, slack-jawed poses. Lizzie is too much of an actress to pose like that. I still can’t believe she was plucked from indie obscurity to star in two major movies. We’ll see if her star rises. Let’s do excerpts:

Her engagement to Boyd Holbrook: “I’m relaxed about it, but I am excited and planning ideas because it’s fun – It’s just like throwing a party to celebrate life. I love being in a relationship a lot.”

Will she have a double wedding with Mary-Kate? “No, I just told her she gets to pick a date first!”

Growing up Olsen: “Because my sisters were so grounded, it helped me be grounded. They never got caught up in things. I did live a charmed life. We got to go on vacations and lived in nice homes and I got to play club volleyball and ballet, which you don’t realise as a kid are expensive. My mom would say things like, ‘Lizzie, we are not the Rockefellers!’ That put things into perspective.”

She’s done taking her clothes off: “I don’t want to be known for that. I’m keeping my clothes on for a couple of years. I’ve noticed that if you’re a young actress and you’re about to make your first movie where you show your boob or butt, it’s an epic moment in your life, like, ‘I finally did nudity!’ If you don’t have that stigma, then it’s not a big deal.”

[From Marie Claire UK]

This isn’t the most interesting interview, I know. It IS nice to read a peaceful interview with a lead actress of an upcoming action movie. Elizabeth isn’t shoving her boobs into the pages of Maxim. Some may argue that the Olsen twins opened acting doors for Elizabeth. There’s obvious name recognition, but Ashley and MK don’t have clout in the acting world. In fashion? Sure. Acting is a completely different game, and Elizabeth nailed her indie roles well enough that major studios came calling. Now I only worry that her talent will be lost in a sea of mindless action movies.

I tried so hard not to like her but I can’t help it, I feel like when she picks the right roles, she really does an amazing job.

    • Liv says:

She seems much more normal than her sisters. Then again she probably grew up in their shadow and had time to do so in private.

  2. Erinn says:

I like her hair that color – I think I’m going to go close to that shade next.
She just looks so much more healthy than her sisters.

  3. teatimescoming says:

I NEED that beaded green skirt. That is all

  4. Allie says:

It’s funny because I was so jealous of her as a kid. I mean, who wouldn’t want the Olsen twins as your older sisters? She was always in the background of their direct to TV movies.

Elizabeth is a good actress, but it’s kind of amazing she’s managed to develop such a career because she has had so many flops (at least 7 or 8 with the last one being Oldboy, as a film a journalist was talking about this recently on twitter….) despite only acting for a few years since Mary Marcy May Marlene. Godzilla and Avengers though will secure her a career for a while, imo. I do wonder if her sisters ever feel a tad envious in that Elizabeth doesn’t have that forever child face and her career in the film industry is thriving.

Yeah, this is a good point. I am totally Team Lizzie and I thought she was a complete revelation in MMMM, but I wish she had taken more time picking her next roles. It’s a shame because she really is a top tier talent. She has had 5-6 films between MMMM and Godzilla, and they are all god awful (yes, I sat through them all… #teamLizzie). She’s such a good actress that she elevates even the most mundane scene but she really needs to focus on building a strong and consistent resume. I think Godzilla and especially Avengers will help take her to the next level but I sure hope she does a few indie/smaller films in between that are actually ya know, good. No more Therese and Oldboy, please!

It probably goes both ways. Is Elizabeth jealous because no matter what she does, she can never attain the level of wealth her sisters have?

    • Bridget says:

There’s also a distinction to be made – movies that just didn’t quite work out, and outright flops. An outright flop is something like Cutthroat Island, or the Lone Ranger. They had no real artistic intent and were dismal failures. But then there are movies that had an interesting premise to start, maybe had a good cast, a great director or a writer. Old boy may have been ridiculous, but it was still an opportunity to work with Spike Lee. A great example of an actor with m isfires was Matt Damon. Between Bourne and Good Will Hunting he had a lot of m isfires, but once he ‘hit’ again it was work that was interpreted as interesting and resume building.

  6. Barrett says:

She is very pretty. She doesn’t look scary like the twins.

  7. paola says:

It is surprising how these sisters are down to earth and lovely. Considering the success the Olsen twins had since they were very young and now leading a very succesfull fashion business i can’t help but praise their parents for being real parents.

  8. Sarah says:

i can understand not wanting to do nude scenes. nowadays its all over the internet, without the context of the movie and all the headlines and articles only talk about the nudity and not the story and characters. there is basically no getting nude for art anymore, its only for curious eyes and marketing.

  9. lenje says:

I do like the Olsen sisters (yes, including the twins!). Still don’t get what is scary about the twins. If anything, they often dress like homeless, although the actual price of each piece they’re wearing is probably of hundreds of dollars. I believe that they’re pretty grounded.

  10. blue marie says:

I like her but have the hardest time remembering her name, I just refer to her as The Third Olsen. The family lived off the twins money right?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Does this help – the Olsen twins named their casual clothing line Elizabeth & James after their brother and sister. If you’ve never heard of that clothing line, it will obviously not help at all…trails off…

  11. mom2two says:

I like her a lot. I think she’s pretty and refreshing. I hope her career turns out well. If I do go see Godzilla, it would mainly be for Bryan Cranston, but the previews don’t look all that great to me. I seriously need to catch up with the Marvel movies, since I have not see Avengers, Thor 2 or Captain America 2. At least I have a year to do that before the second Avengers comes out.

I think the Olsens in general have managed stardom pretty well.

  12. Patricia says:

She’s very talented, these action movie roles are kind of bla. I hope after she does these movies she finds a movie that can really show her acting chops again.

  13. Hiddles forever says:

I actually like her, although I have never seen her in any movie. Planning to see Godzilla though 🙂

  14. Tig says:

I’ve only seen her in Liberal Arts, but thought she did fine. I have a hard time keeping her and Britt Marling separate in my head- they look so much alike! They are both pretty talented, so hope they go on to bigger and better movies!

  15. Hissyfit says:

She looks very Jessiba Alba-ish and that chick from the blacklist show in the cover.
I haven’t seen any of her movie so I don’t know how good of an actress she is, but her interview sounds very down to earth and she seems well grounded. I still envy her because she probably gets clothes from “The Row” for free!

  16. Algernon says:

I choose to believe Joss Whedon picked her because she’s not your average starlet; she actually has some brains and some class. I’m hoping Scarlet Witch isn’t a throwaway role. I really loved her as a kid. She can do anything! Also she bones like, half the Avengers.

  17. Lux says:

I LOVE her so, so much!

  18. GreenTurtle says:

She’s adorable. And I love that she’s smiling and making funny faces during her photo shoot instead of trying to look SEXEH!!!
